This study tested the hypothesis that preconditioning, by reducing catabolite accumulation during ischemia, reduces osmotic swelling and myocardial necrosis during subsequent reperfusion. Farm pigs were randomly allocated to one of three groups of treatment: a control group undergoing a 48-min coronary occlusion (CO) of the middle left anterior descending artery, a preconditioned group (2 cycles of 5-min CO and 5-min reperfusion before the 48-min CO), or an intracoronary perfusion group receiving a substrate-free anoxic buffer perfusion into the area at risk between minutes 5 and 10 of the pro

Background: Cerebral ischemia is a common cause of disability and death. Ischemic brain injury results from complex pathological processes, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Thioredoxin( Trx) is an important multifunctional protein, which regulates cellular redox status. Increasing studies have demonstrated that Trx provides a neuroprotective role against cerebral ischemia-induced injury. Methods: A systematic search of PMC and the PubMed Database was conducted to summarize the protective effects of Trx against cerebral ischemia. Results: This article reviews the underst

In addition, genetic factors such as post-ischemic changes in genetic programming in the expression of amyloid protein precursor, β-secretase, presenilin-1 and -2, and tau protein play an important role in the

Vascular applications in regenerative medicine include blood vessel substitutes and vasculogenesis in ischemic or engineered tissues. For these repair processes to be successful, there is a need for a stable supply of endothelial and smooth muscle cells. For blood vessel substitutes, the immediate goal is to enable blood flow, but vasoactivity is necessary for long term success. In engineered vessels, it is thought that endothelial cells will serve as an anti-thrombogenic lumenal layer, while smooth muscle cells contribute to vessel contractility.
