"Evaluation of the rapid, multi-country, parallel process, multi-tasking approach to startup of short-term technical assistance to improve service delivery in newborn and child health in the context of USAID’s Zika response in four Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries." Abstract:
Background: In 2018, the USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems (ASSIST) Project started a new partnership with four Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries impacted by the Zika virus: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The goal of the project was to provide short-term technical assistance (STTA) to strengthen the health systems’ capacity to detect newborns and young children potentially affected by Zika and to address their health needs. To meet these objectives, ASSIST developed an innovative approach based on its existing model for service delivery improvement. This novel approach is known as Rapid, Multi-country, Parallel Process, Multi-tasking Approach for a Project Startup (RMPP-MAPS). An evaluation was conducted to document the STTA startup activities, to identify enabling and constraining factors, and to capture lessons learned. Methods: An external consultant conducted remote in-depth interviews with individuals involved in the startup using semi-structured interview guides and retrieved data from the review of project documents. Results: Using RMPP-MAPS, the ASSIST Project successfully implemented the startup for complex STTA in four countries within less than four months, spanning mid-May to early September 2018. Project milestones included achieving buy-in from stakeholders, co-developing the technical scope and materials, and rapidly executing critical operational functions. Dedicated project teams, country leaderships, and local champions were essential to overcoming the main challenges, which included a condensed timeframe, lack of in-country offices, and country-level factors such as a shortage of health care workers and a weak health infrastructure. Conclusions: The RMPP-MAPS is a feasible and resource-efficient mechanism of interest to implementers, donors, and low and middle-income countries facing temporal and financial limitations to rapidly addressing public health priorities.

Weston, Caron Olivene. "An examination of the place of school mathematics in preparing pupils for the workplace in Antigua and Barbuda." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/27824/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines the preparation made to enable mathematics teachers to appropriately prepare school leavers entering directly into the workforce upon graduation to handle the different branches of mathematics. The methodology was that of the interpretive qualitative paradigm. The method was that of the multi method case study and the tools included: constructed conversation; interviews; telephone calls; email; focus group; photography; video recording; participatory observation; observation and documentation. The theoretical framework was informed by components of the Engeström (2001) second generation model. The study found that while there was hardly any preparation made in the system to accommodate mathematics teachers in the appropriate preparation of students to cope with rapid changes in technology and mathematical skills in the workplace, because of on-the-job training, the newly employed were able to handle the mathematics at their workplaces. Additionally, the technological tools in use at workplaces allowed employees to handle the mathematics in work: complicated algorithms associated with mathematical operations were hidden in these technological tools. Employees were then only required to perform an operation of a push or a pull of a button (switch) to turn on or to turn off the device. Equally, mathematical knowledge at the workplace was an activity; thus there was no need for the pedagogical format required for school mathematics classes. This research is significant since this is the first of its kind in the Caribbean using components of the Engeström (2001) second generation model as its theoretical framework and for examination of the mathematics informing workplaces in Antigua and Barbuda. It has also served to bridge a gap between school teachers and employers on communication of the different branches of mathematics required in the workplaces of Antigua and Barbuda. Simultaneously it represents a new block in the wall of literature from scholars in the field of workplace mathematics since the Caribbean’s space was empty.

Athill, Cleon Pauline. "Caribbean Students' Experience of Readiness for the Secondary Education Certificate Exam." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6967.

Full text
Abstract:
While there is general agreement about its importance, the construct of educational readiness is nebulous with much debate about what constitutes readiness. Readiness has been found to be a multidimensional psychological construct from a psychometric perspective. However, there is a growing awareness that this psychometric focus is lopsided, and that readiness does not only reside in the child. Further, there is an accompanying appreciation that readiness research may need to focus more on the subjective experience of individuals within the context of their environment. This phenomenological study, using Bronfenbrenner's social-ecological model, explored how Antigua and Barbudan students experienced readiness as they prepared to take the 2017 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Exam (CSEC). In an interview, each of the 12 participants recounted their experience as they readied themselves for the CSEC. The data were analyzed through content and framework analysis. The results support findings in the literature that showed that readiness is a complex and iterative process. It is the result of the dynamic interplay of various inputs of a host of individuals functioning at different levels of the readiness system. These results can then provide a point of entry for both national dialogue and policy formulation culminating in the provision of comprehensive services to support students' readiness experiences. The ultimate hope is that readiness for the CSEC Exam will lead to actual success on the exams, which in turn will translate into improved life chances of Antigua and Barbudan students.

Charles-Williams, Janelle Dion. "Perceptions of First-Time Antiguan and Barbudan Mothers Towards Breastfeeding and Weaning." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5172.

Full text
Abstract:
Antigua and Barbuda, in the eastern Caribbean, is one of several countries with exclusive low breastfeeding rates and premature weaning. Researchers have demonstrated that babies exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life are better protected from childhood diseases and experience a better quality of life into adulthood, while early weaning is associated with morbidity and mortality. However, at 6 weeks postpartum, only 30% of Antiguan and Barbudan mothers are exclusively breastfeeding. Researchers have explained why mothers in general cease exclusive breastfeeding prematurely: insufficiency of breast milk, returning to paid employment, lack of social support; but an explanation specific to Antigua and Barbuda has not been identified. This qualitative phenomenological study, therefore, initiates research concerning breastfeeding attitudes and practices specific to this country. It explores the experiences and perceptions of 13 Antiguan and Barbudan 1st-time mothers on exclusive breastfeeding and weaning. The theory of planned behavior provided the theoretical framework. Data collected from semistructured interviews were coded using key word as themes. Manual analysis of the research data was also conducted. The findings indicated inadequate lactation education and counselling for mothers, poor levels of lactation education among nurses, and minimal statutory maternity leave as the reasons for premature weaning among the research participants. The findings of this research can contribute to social change in Antigua and Barbuda by providing evidence-based information to strengthen breastfeeding policies and interventions and become part of regional scholarship on this issue.
