Abstract:
This article focuses on the role of nonprofit, nongovernmental, international development organizations (NGOs) in touristic securitization, the practice of securing tourists to sustain tourism. Especially in the Global South, NGOs are incorporating tourism into their operations/funding strategies and, thus, becoming touristic securitization stakeholders and actors. Through focusing on Western NGOs in and around Guatemala’s main tourism destination, La Antigua Guatemala, this article investigates how NGOs rely on, contribute to, and/or engage in touristic securitization. While the article demonstrates that NGOs help make Western tourists feel safe enough to travel to Guatemala, as well as help to keep them from harm while visiting, it also shows how touristic securitization is informed by and informing of intersecting inequalities and (re)producing human insecurities, especially for poor, often indigenous, Guatemalans, the very people NGOs aim to help. The article argues that touristic securitization is securing different worlds of (in)security.

<p>In 1678, the painter Antonio Ramírez elaborated a picture explaining the condition of the works of the cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala (now la Antigua Guatemala), a picture that allows us to establish the evolution undergone by the cathedral from the second half of the XVII century to its current state. Throughout this evolution, we want to highlight those construction elements that have been able to withstand not only the course of time, but above all, the force of the numerous earthquakes that have affected Guatemala since 1678 until today. In addition, Ramirez's work offers a series of brief but very illustrative brushstrokes on the organization of a construction in the second half of the XVII century, data that enriches the history of Guatemalan colonial architecture.</p>

En el Museo del Libro Antiguo, localizado en la ciudad de La Antigua Guatemala, se resguarda desde hace más de 60 años una colección particular que, anterior a esta investigación carecía de datos específicos en cuanto su adquisición. Mediante un proceso de investigación documental de los propios registros antiguos del MLA, noticias de su inauguración, cotejo de sus primeros inventarios y otras referencias en torno a la historia de la imprenta y de la Real Universidad de San Carlos, fue posible realizar una identidad historiográfica de esta particular colección, lo que además permite aportar a la reconstrucción del antiguo archivo de la Real Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala.

Abstract:
Se estudiaron murciélagos insectívoros en tres cafetales de La Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala. Utilizando el detector AnabatTM II se identificaron dos especies (Eptesicus brasiliensis, de probable distribución en el país, y Lasiurus intermedius) y un género (Myotis spp.) de la familia Vespertilionidae, y dos especies (Cynomopsmexicanus, no registrada en el país, y Molossus rufus), un género (Eumops spp.) y un sonotipo de la familia Molossidae. Estas especies son por primera ocasión reportadas en el área por medios acústicos. La complementariedad a nivel de familias, géneros y especies es de 100% al comparar la detección ultrasónica con los resultados obtenidos previamente en el área por medio de redes de niebla. La riqueza de especies de murciélagos en los cafetales se incrementa en 87.5%. Los espectrogramas revelan actividad de alimentación de Molossus, inferida por la alta tasa de repetición de pulsos en los denominados zumbidos de alimentación. Las dos potenciales especies de Eumops están clasificadas en la Lista de Especies Amenazadas (LEA) de Guatemala. Técnicamente es necesario recolectar especímenes de E. brasiliensis y C. mexicanus, y depositarlos en colecciones científicas, para ser incluidas en el registro de especies del país.

Abstract:
Se aborda la manera como se configuraron los derechos de propiedad en Antigua Guatemala, con base en la hipótesis de que esa municipalidad fue un gobierno que enarboló valores liberales en un marco orgánico de Antiguo Régimen. De igual modo, se estudia cómo el cabildo institucionalizó las prácticas informales que la población tenía sobre la tierra, lo que le daba una ventaja sobre el conjunto de actores racionales que se desenvolvían en esa localidad. El trabajo está fundamentado en el acervo que resguarda el Archivo Histórico de la Ciudad de Antigua Guatemala y cruza el conjunto de patrones encontrados en esa documentación con el planteamiento teórico propuesto por Elinor Ostrom sobre el gobierno de los bienes comunes. A lo largo del texto se observa que el gobierno local, en aras de mantener el control sobre las tierras, promovió de manera indirecta la generación de prácticas asociadas con el liberalismo económico del que, en acciones y discursos, trataban de huir, lo cual derivó en un proceso de perfeccionamiento de la propiedad terso y sin conflictos aparentes.

Abstract:
PROBLEMA: abandono y deterioro de las ermitas, por lo que se busca promocionar la valorización del patrimonio cultural de Guatemala, destacando la importancia de la implementación de medidas de conservación preventiva, valorización, mantenimiento, y concientización a la comunidad de su entorno. Como patrimonio de la humanidad se identificaron los diferentes estados de deterioro en cada elemento arquitectónico, que van desde los cambios climáticos, estaciones climáticas, desastres naturales, entorno urbano, cambios de nivel topográfico por lo que se ven afectadas las diferentes edificaciones. OBJETIVO: conservar el conjunto arquitectónico, devolviendo su valor del entorno urbano y su contexto. MÉTODO: se utilizo un enfoque cualitativo, identificando sus características al describir todo lo realizado durante el proceso de investigación, análisis de los objetos arquitectónicos, la observación por medio del levantamiento de las estaciones y su registro. Se tomaron como muestra doce estaciones del Barrio de San Francisco, Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez. RESULTADOS: su deterioro se debe, a la falta de planificación, registro, conservación y mantenimiento detallado de cada estación o ermita, siendo necesario tomar medidas de preservación, conservación, restauración, rehabilitación, ya que representan un testimonio tangible del legado cultural de Guatemala. CONCLUSIÓN: se busca promover políticas, destacando la relevancia, participación y concientización activa de la comunidad en este tipo de proyectos y la necesidad de invertir en el patrimonio cultural y religioso de Guatemala.

La localidad del Tejar (en el departamento de Chimaltenango, Guatemala) se encuentra a una docena de kilómetros de la Antigua Guatemala, ciudad que es Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la riqueza de sus edificios y ruinas coloniales. En el Tejar se han venido fabricando tejas y ladrillos desde la época colonial, tanto para la arquitectura doméstica como para la arquitectura de prestigio. La pervivencia de esta industria en la actualidad, cuando el block de cemento y la lámina de plástico o metal se han convertido en los materiales constructivos dominantes, se debe básicamente a las restauraciones o a las construcciones neocoloniales que se realizan en la Antigua Guatemala. Este cambio de mercado, de una arquitectura más popular a una más elitista no ha modificado, sin embargo, las fórmulas tradicionales de fabricación de tejas y ladrillos. En este artículo examinamos el trabajo realizado por varias familias de tejeros, revisando tanto las técnicas empleadas (desde el modelaje de los elementos hasta su cocción y venta), así como la transmisión de dichas técnicas en el ámbito doméstico, y el tipo de relaciones familiares-profesionales que se establecen con ello.

Abstract:
This thesis provides an ethnographic case study of everyday forms of global tourism competition in one place: La Antigua Guatemala (Antigua). Located in Central America, Guatemala is better known for poverty, violence, and insecurity than for tourism. Nonetheless, like many other countries in the global South, as part of neoliberalisation the government of Guatemala has turned to tourism as a tool of development and recently embarked on a plan to transform Guatemala into one of the world’s most visited destinations. Rather than focus on government policy, this thesis turns to the everyday discourses, imaginings, practices, and performances of global tourism competition in Antigua. Antigua-locals live and work in the ‘destino Guatemala’ project and are key stakeholders and competitive actors. Through exploring everyday forms of global tourism competition, this thesis highlights how this practice is informed by and powerfully informing of diverse, and often highly unequal, social and spatial relations, as well as local identities and subjectivities. In particular, it divulges how one’s access to different forms of (dis)embodied capitals affects, but does not determine, how one engages in global tourism competition, how successful one is likely to be at attracting/satisfying global tourists, and how participating in global tourism competition can help to produce new forms of (dis)embodied capital. Within this, the ways in which global tourism competition are imagined, experienced, utilised, challenged, and resisted are brought to the fore. In providing a rich ethnographic account of everyday global tourism competition in Antigua, this thesis highlights how global tourism competition to attract/satisfy global tourists is making far more than ‘destino Guatemala’.

L'idée d'une culture de Cotzumalguapa avait parfois été évoquée -essentiellement sur la base de sculptures au style particulier, découvertes dans le sud du Guatemala et dans l'ouest du Salvador- mais n'avait jamais fait l'objet d'une recherche approfondie. Après une présentation des antécédents de la recherche sur la postulée culture de Cotzumalguapa, des travaux conduits dans le cadre de la thèse et de la géographie de l'aire d'étude, nous procédons à une description et à une analyse des différents types de vestiges des 82 sites du corpus. Nous nous apercevons que même si le style lapidaire constitue le principal fossile directeur, des caractéristiques intéressantes sont observables dans la peinture rupestre, le lithique, la céramique, l'organisation spatiale des sites et l'architecture. On conclut à l'existence d'une culture de Cotzumalguapa, au caractère mésoaméricain et dont l'apogée se situe entre 600 et 1000 après J. -C.

Abstract:
Building Opportunity centers on disaster response and recovery after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake destroyed the city of Antigua Guatemala, the capital of colonial Guatemala, on July 29, 1773. It also concentrates on the colonial government’s decision to relocate Antigua Guatemala and establish a new capital, New Guatemala. This dissertation examines how the cultural, economic, political, and social views of inhabitants -- bureaucrats, clerics, Indians, architects, and the poor -- shaped their reactions to the tremor. Furthermore, it contends that the migration from Antigua Guatemala to New Guatemala created socioeconomic opportunities through which individuals made strong efforts to rebuild their lives. Debates on natural catastrophe in colonial Latin America have emphasized the ability of calamity to ignite power struggles over competing ideas about emergency management. However, in addition to an analysis of such disputes, this dissertation advances new understandings of the ways in which the earthquake gave victims chances to reshape their world. How did individuals' beliefs influence their attitudes toward the cataclysm? How did the effort to create a new city forge openings for survivors to refashion their identities? This study shows that individual groups' notions of fear, hazard mitigation, history, and socioeconomics defined arguments about whether or not to move. It also demonstrates that the tragedy produced spaces in which officials, ecclesiastics, indigenous peoples, and the impoverished worked to improve their lives. In various ways, administrators and victims turned adversity into an opportunity to become disaster managers and survivors, respectively.

Abstract:
The initial purpose of this study was to explore how tourism in Guatemala is affecting indigenous weavers, weaving practices, and the transmission of weaving knowledge and experience from the current generation of Guatemalans to the next. Through extended on-site study and interviews with weavers in three towns in Guatemala—San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Antigua, and Santiago Zamora—it was learned that weaving practices in Guatemala are much more culturally and socially complex than what is disclosed on the surface. This study revealed that the transmission of weaving practices between generations is influenced significantly by the growing effects of globalization. Not only is globalization shaping the emerging generation’s participation in weaving in Guatemala, but it was seen in this study that prevalent global ideas and practices are also molding education, clothing styles, entertainment, economics, technology, and social media within the current younger generation of Guatemalans. These growing influences on Guatemalan society contribute to a diminished interest in weaving and perceived need for weavers in this country, and are thus constricting the transmission of local Maya culture from past generations to the next. This research was a combination of the weavers’ stories and my own journey through the cultural complexities found in three Guatemalan towns in order to reveal a rich and purposed view of current cultural practices of weaving in Guatemala.

En el pensamiento maya el calendario refleja la existencia de un ordenamiento del mundo dado por las entidades sagradas que gobiernan cada día.

Abstract:
El artículo propone el análisis del traslado de la ciudad de Guatemala de 1773 a 1776, debido a los terremotos acaecidos en el Valle de Panchoy, hoy La Antigua Guatemala. Al identificar este hecho histórico, muy singular en su género, se interpreta cómo el sistema de gobierno, dentro del contexto ideológico monárquico de su época, conformaba la nueva ciudad en un esquema político-social, que le permitía propiciar una reorganización de las clases políticas y sociales sobre un nuevo tejido urbano, con el fin de reposicionar el régimen oficial y proyectar la imagen necesaria de ciudad, así como la oportunidad de debilitar el poder económico eclesiástico, a través del traslado de la Ciudad, para la realización de una reestructuración social. The paper proposes the analysis of the transfer of Guatemala City from 1773 to 1776, due to the earthquakes in the Panchoy Valley, La Antigua Guatemala today. By identifying this historical fact, very unique in its kind, it is interpreted how the system of government, within the ideological context of his time monarchist, formed the new city in a socio-political scheme that allowed them to promote a reorganization of politic and social classes, in a new urban fabric, in order to the reposition of the political system, and to project the image of the city needed, and also to take the opportunity to weaken the ecclesiastical economic power, through the transfer of the city, for the realization of social restructuring.

Abstract:
The Casa K’ojom in La Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala, houses a unique collection of physical objects and audiovisual materials devoted to Mayan cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. What began as a private collection has evolved into a museum where thousands of visitors have learned about Mayan culture and music. This paper highlights the development and care of the collections from the perspective of the Casa K’ojom’s founder and current director, Samuel Franco Arce. It reviews the steps he is taking to preserve the collection’s analogue and digital material for the future, all the while not neglecting important non-digital artefacts. It also proposes future solutions to issues within an archive that has to address constantly changing technologies, user needs, audiovisual formats and intellectual property rights laws.

Abstract:
This paper will argue that the connections that exist between architecture and political powers are located in representational functions of architecture. Representation is defined here as a culture-specific process of establishing the relationships between reality and the signs created to symbolize that reality. Architecture of Guatemala provides a unique material to study how representational constitution of symbolic places reflects an ideological struggle of two different cultures. To substantiate this point, I will expand on Tzvetan Todorov’s observations made in “The Conquest of America” and show how they could enhance our understanding of the symbolic function of architecture. The discussion of representational attributes and workings of architecture will be informed by a comparative reading of three cities in Guatemala: Mayan ruins in Tlkal, colonial city of Antigua, and indigenous Chichicastenango. My objective is to test the workings of this critical inquiry against the geography of power that these three cities represent.
