Abstract:
Antihelmintics are the drugs used to eradicate or reside the number of helmintic parasites from intestinal tract or tissue of humans and other animals. The antihelmintic activity of Rauwolfia serpentina root extracts were evaluated separately on adult Indian earthworm (Pheretima posthuma). It was found that methanolic extract and aqueous extract of Rauwolfia serpentina showed antihelmintic activity at various concentration (50,100 and 200 mg/ml). The standard drug used was Albendazole (50, 100 and 200 mg/ml). The methanolic extract of Rauwolfia serpentina showed better result when compared to

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Ventricular shunts used to relieve hydrocephalus among patients with neurocysticercosis have been plagued by high shunt malfunction rates. We examined the characteristics of shunt malfunctions among patients with neurocysticercosis. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of data for 122 patients who were admitted with a diagnosis of cysticercosis during a 5.5-year period. Cases of hydrocephalus requiring shunt placement were reviewed with respect to the segment of shunt obstruction, disease activity at the time of shunt placement, and the effects of antihelminthic tr

We measured immune components after the administration of an antihelminthic drug to remove parasites. Cellular immune components included the complete white blood cell (WBC) count and the in vivo skin-swelling response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Humoral aspects assessed were the ability of plasma to agglutinate foreign particles and the bactericidal capacity of plasma. Antihelminthic treatment resulted in lower to

Intestinal helminths are highly prevalent worldwide, infecting approximately a third of the world’s population, causing significant host morbidity. With no current vaccines, a limited number of effective chemotherapeutic drugs available and the emergence of drug-resistant helminths, it is essential to further our understanding of the mechanisms of antihelminth immunity. Our current understanding of antihelminth immunity places the type 2 immune response at the forefront of protection, with type 2 cytokines orchestrating and activating a plethora of immune and non-immune cells to mediate parasi
