Full textIf anti-semites traditionally explain the phenomenon of anti-semitism by characteristics inherent to jews themselves, researchers who have worked - particularly since the last war - on elaborating a theory on this phenomenon, have tried to explain it either through history (in particular through the history of the conflict between judaism and christianity), or through the action (or lack of action) of societies, or through the structure of the personality of the anti-semites themselves, or even through a combination of several of these factors. After having analysed, in the first part, these different theories in order to draw up a statement on this question, we intended, in the second part, to reconsider the problem by re-examining successively the process of creation and the process of working of such a phenomenon, by explaining it from the point of view of the social function which it fulfils. With that aim in mind, we have first used according to the systemic approach the elements of construction for a theoretic model of the scapegoat as a strategy of individual and social crises regulation. We intendes to show secondly that such a model could first be applied to the birth of anti-semitism in hellenistic egypt, that it accounted for the subsequent change from antijudaism into anti-semitism in medieval christendom, and that it provided at last a satisfactory key for deciphering modern ans contemporary historical events in france, germany and russia
Meyfeld, Dirk. "Volksgeist und Judenemanzipation." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät I, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17077.
Full textIn this thesis early anti-semitism is discussed in the context of G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy. Early anti-semitism spanning from 1780-1850 is particularly concerned with declining Jews any equal civic status. Against the backdrop of civil societies arising in the early 19th century, a group of German authors, including F.L. Jahn, E.M. Arndt, K. Follen, C.F. Rühs, and J.F. Fries, in spite of their liberalism opposed Jewish emancipation in this specific sense. In contrast, Hegel in his Philosophy of Right clearly argues in favour of Jewish emancipation, following modern normative ideals as established by Human Rights Declarations in the U.S. and in France. Overcoming some of his earlier anti-Jewish views Hegel arrives at this result by way of consistent thinking. He not only stresses the obvious relationship between Human Rights and Jewish emancipation, but also further develops this idea: His concept calls for equal integration that involves economic and cultural participation as well. Hegel opposed liberal anti-semites under specific historical conditions that have to be taken into account alongside his philosophical arguments put forward in the Philosophy of Right. If he finally didn‘t achieve to develop an overall consistent concept it‘s not to be attributed to a lack of efforts on his part but rather to the reality his theory reflects. International relations between modern states don‘t involve universal institutions with actual power. Hegel, reflecting on and giving in to that reality, finally dismisses his earlier attempts to advance universal ethics. His concept of a nation‘s particular volksgeist and especially the Germanic spirit have to be assessed with this context in mind. Hegel‘s idea of emancipation which rests on universal claims is at odds with his preference for the particular that‘s being expressed in his concept of a volksgeist. The source for this problem however has to be sought in the international relations themselves.

Full textWhat a heterogeneous population that the Righteous among the nations of Rhône-Alpes and, by this way, little comprehensible! If they don’t embody all the situations of the rescue, the Righteous enlighten, only because they do exist, a piece of the civilian Resistance under the Occupation. These people belong to an unusual region, as fated for the welcome. Its various landscapes led to the experiment of all the types of tourism. This practicing country is also the ground of new religious experiences and the cradle of the Christian democracy. The appeal of this crossroads strengthens under the Occupation with the arrival of exiles, Jews in particular, who try to take back their former life. The raids of the summer 1942 make suddenly the help to the pursued people a question of survival. Moved by common values, encouraged by the clerics who surround them, people mobilize. Thus real networks of support arise, transforming villages into sanctuaries, common people into heroes

Full textThrough the study of judicial records that involved Jews, among themselves or against Christians, we aim to analyze the nexus that all established with the available legal resources. Our fundamental concern is centered on the relations of power and thus when interpreting the data we shall place a very special emphasis on the political polycentrism and the consequent superposition of juridical regulations and agents with the capacity to administer justice. Based on these premises, we shall try to offer a different vision of the relations that Jews, Christians and Converts had in the jurisdiction of the Chancellery of Valladolid between approximately 1475 and 1525. Ln the first place, we shall consider the political and judicial framework in which the lawsuits under consideration took place; this environment is marked by the strong presence of Christian anti-Judaism, the result of the inherence between religion and nonnative production, an essential characteristic of the period under consideration. The analysis continues in focusing on the practice of the administration of justice, studying how, when, in what manner the norms were applied and what the margin of elasticity was, if it did indeed exist, and to the extent that it is possible, we shall offer an explanation of the reasons why this dynamic occurred. Likewise we shall examine the judicial Iawsuits that were underway when the expulsion of the Jewish community was announced and what happened to the litigants that converted, thus changing their judicial status in these new circumstances. The lawsuits that took place subsequently, that is, when many Jews that had been exiled, returned baptized, will also be analyzed
Full textThis thesis sheds light on the evolution of antijudaism amongst Christians Parisian intellectuals – such as Odo of Chateauroux – between the first year of the trial of the Talmud (1240) and the year of the final sentence (1248) of Talmudic texts. With the creation of universities in the twelfth century, intellectual curiosity and the thirst of knowledge started to spread. Simultaneously, the church’s presence and its doctrinal orthodoxy strengthens, with an even stronger desire to control its worshipers. When Nicolas Donin reports the Talmud to the Pope in 1239, Gregory IX requested Christian scholars to study and analyze it. Once properly examined, the texts were condemned and Jews were accused of turning away from the Old Testament in order to follow the Talmud, a book full of errors. Thus, what will be brought to light in this work is that the virulent antijudaism of Odo of Chateauroux, exhibited during the trial of the Talmud, stems from a misunderstanding of the Talmudic books.
