Adequate choice and use of antitussive therapy in pediatrics presupposes knowing at least the two key aspects: causes of cough and the specific mechanism of the cough reflex in children, as well as the mechanisms of action of antitussive drugs used. The need for the treatment of cough as such, that is, prescription of the so-called antitussive drugs, arises mainly in children with nonproductive, dry, persistent cough. Central antitussives suppress the function of the cough center in the medulla oblongata or other associated nerve centers of the brain. The antitussive drug butamirate, often use

Abstract:
The article presents data on the etiology, modern methods for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory system diseases and examines in detail cough as the main symptom. Particular attention is paid to hypertussivity, which is defined as a cough that occurs in the absence of obvious reasons. In addition, the emphasize was put on the role of anatomical and physiological features in the development and characteristics of cough, especially in young children. The authors draw attention to the complex mechanism of the cough, which development involves many body systems such as nervous, immune, endocri

Natural products play an important role in drug discovery. This work employed a natural product 1-methylhydantoin as the lead compound to develop novel dual-active drugs. 1-Methylhydantoin was isolated from Oviductus Ranae, which is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for tussive and inflammation treatment for a long time. An in silico study screened the more active 1-methylhydantoin derivatives. Antitussive assessment indicated that the newly synthesized agent had similar bioactivity with the natural product. Psychosis is known as a broad term of symptoms that cause serious disorganization of behavior, thinking, and perception of reality. One of the medicines that recently gained much attention in terms of its psychotic potential is dextromethorphan (DXM). DXM, a widely used antitussive drug, is a commonly abused drug because of its euphoric, hallucinogenic, and dissociative properties. To date, DXM is a legally marketed cough suppressant that is neither a controlled substance nor a regulated chemical under the Controlled Substances Act. Various medicinal plants find their use in cough treatment, based on traditions and long-term experience. Pharmacological principles of their action, however, are much less known. Herbal drugs usually contain a mixture of potentially active compounds, which can manifest diverse effects. Expectorant or antitussive effects, which can be accompanied by others, such as anti-inflammatory or antibacterial, are probably the most important in the treatment of coughs.
