Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to characterize the immigrant entrepreneurs of the Region of Antofagasta and identify their contribution to local development. Design/methodology/approach This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. Face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire were carried out with a sample of 314 immigrant entrepreneurs in the city of Antofagasta. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and mean difference. Findings The results show a new type of entrepreneur that cannot be fully described by the theories developed for South–North immigrant entrepreneurs. The concept of the South–South entrepreneur is therefore proposed, in order to categorise these entrepreneurs and explain their behaviour, with the conclusion that this group makes a significant contribution to the local economy, both in terms of job and wealth creation and by broadening the availability of goods and services. Practical implications Given that immigrant entrepreneurs are a valuable socio-economic asset to the city in terms of job and wealth creation and service diversification, public administrations should endeavour to support these individuals and attract them to the city. Social implications Knowledge of the contribution of this group will lead to a greater acceptance of immigrants who have recently been rejected by certain sectors of the population. Originality/value This study reveals the existence of a group of immigrant entrepreneurs whose characteristics and contribution to local development were previously not known.

El presente artículo busca sistematizar esta experiencia en el relato de una historia y sus testimonios, conocer el funcionamiento de esta instancia, los logros que ha obtenido y por sobretodo la experiencia que ha significado este órgano de representación y praxis infantil para los niños y niñas consejeros de infancia de la comuna de Antofagasta. Para esto se trabajó una metodología cualitativa en base a la técnica de entrevista semiestructurada, el análisis de documentos institucionales y del registro de las actividades más importantes realizadas en el transcurso de la historia del consejo.

Abstract:
We present taxonomic and geographic novelties in the genus Plantago from Chile. More specifically, we describe P. nebularis, a new species endemic to Cerro Moreno, Antofagasta region, and propose P. zoellneriana, a new name for P. sericea subsp. araucana. We also lectotypify the name P. sericea, expand the recorded distribution of P. lanceolata and P. pachyneura to the Tarapacá region, and argue that the narrowly endemic species P. johnstonii, known only from the type which was collected in Taltal, Antofagasta region, is likely extinct.

Abstract:
Chile is the leading producer of copper worldwide and its richest mineral deposits are found in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile. Mining activities have significantly increased income and employment in the region; however, there has been little assessment of the resulting environmental impacts to residents. The port of Antofagasta, located 1,430 km north of Santiago, the capital of Chile, functioned as mineral stockpile until 1998 and has served as a copper concentrate stockpile since 2014. Samples were collected in 2014 and 2016 that show elevated concentrations of As, Cu, Pb, and Zn in street dust and in residents’ blood (Pb) and urine (As) samples. To interpret and analyze the spatial variability and likely sources of contamination, existent data of basement rocks and soil geochemistry in the city as well as public-domain airborne dust were studied. Additionally, a bioaccessibility assay of airborne dust was conducted and the chemical daily intake and hazard index were calculated to provide a preliminary health risk assessment in the vicinity of the port. The main conclusions indicate that the concentrations of Ba, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, and V recorded from Antofagasta dust likely originate from intrusive, volcanic, metamorphic rocks, dikes, or soil within the city. However, the elevated concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn do not originate from these geologic outcrops, and are thus considered anthropogenic contaminants. The average concentrations of As, Cu, and Zn are possibly the highest in recorded street dust worldwide at 239, 10,821, and 11,869 mg kg−1, respectively. Furthermore, the contaminants As, Pb, and Cu exhibit the highest bioaccessibilities and preliminary health risk indices show that As and Cu contribute to elevated health risks in exposed children and adults chronically exposed to dust in Antofagasta, whereas Pb is considered harmful at any concentration. Therefore, an increased environmental awareness and greater protective measures are necessary in Antofagasta and possibly other similar mining port cities in developing countries.

Exponemos las formas de habitar el territorio por parte de las poblaciones puneñas durante la conformación y consolidación del Estado Nación abordando ciertas prácticas de consumo en dos dimensiones espaciales: 1- la doméstica, representada en una estancia vinculada al poblado de Antofagasta de la Sierra, y 2- las comprendidas por las áreas internodales, o los espacios “vacíos” en los que se daba la circulación, la transhumancia y otras actividades.

We describe two new scorpion species of genus Brachistosternus from protected areas of Antofagasta Region in northern Chile. Brachistosternus chimba n. sp. has only been collected in La Chimba National Reserve, in the Chilean Coast Range. Brachistosternus llullaillaco n. sp. is a high altitude Andean species of the Lullaillaco National Park. Both species were collected as part of the first survey of the terrestrial arthropods of the protected areas of Antofagasta Region, in the frame of the First National Biodiversity Inventory of Chile of the Integrated System for Monitoring and Evaluation of Native Forest Ecosystems (SIMEF) and Project FIC-R Recovery Plan for La Chimba National Reserve.

Water is essential for the survival of all living beings and plays a significant role in the growth of any country′s economy. At present, water depletion and pollution are a serious challenge due to anthropogenic, geogenic and climate change activities worldwide, including in Chile. The Antofagasta region is located in northern Chile and is the heart of its mining industry, playing a significant role in the country′s economy. The Antofagasta region′s main challenge is water shortage and contamination. Due to it, the region′s local population is facing major difficulties in obtaining the necessary water for domestic, industrial, irrigation, and other uses. Therefore, a water resources management plan is essential for the region to maintain a sustainable environment. Considering the above points, significant parameters, such as slope, aspect, elevation, hillshade, drainage, drainage density and river basin—maps of the Antofagasta region prepared using the digital elevation model (DEM) data in geographic information system (GIS) environment. Besides, a pollution risk level assessment of the study area′s cities/villages done using GIS application. The important created maps and the identification of pollution risk of cities/villages of the present study could provide significant information to policymakers and help them make a suitable water management plan for the area.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue conocer la situación de inmigración de mujeres sudamericanas en la región de Antofagasta (Chile) y construir un modelo teórico para su análisis. Las participantes de este estudio fueron 19 mujeres de entre 18 y 50 años, residentes en la ciudad de Antofagasta y provenientes de Perú, Bolivia y Colombia. Los principales hallazgos sugirieron un modelo dinámico, en el que se tensiona la identidad social y de género de las mujeres inmigrantes ante la búsqueda de coherencia dentro de sus espacios vitales. Advertimos en la interacción con la sociedad receptora, la imposición de nuevas categorías sociales a cambio de integración basada en la asimilación. No obstante, también se observan formas de resistencia frente a dicho proceso.

El Puerto de Antofagasta es una infraestructura urbana ha sido foco de diversos problemas socio-espaciales históricos en la ciudad, generando una constante fricción entre sus funciones productivas (asociadas al acopio de material tóxico para la salud humana) y la creciente vida urbana en la llamada capital mundial del cobre. A partir de un conjunto de antecedentes y experiencias que antes han intentado transformar la relación del puerto con la ciudad, el presente artículo explora cómo dichas ideas pueden ser reaplicadas al contexto actual. La investigación posee una virtud procedimental al introducir el método de la utopía concreta (Lefebvre, 1970) para para organizar y sistematizar propuestas de diseño urbano, junto a abrir el debate sobre el rol del puerto de Antofagasta y como resolver sus conflictos desde las disciplinas urbanísticas, necesitando para ello, de transformaciones institucionales que empoderen el accionar de nivel local.

Abstract The current study presents the effect of process chemistry as well as climate conditions on the water balance of a heap leach operation for black-schist ore. The research is based on the actual water balance at the Terrafame (former Talvivaara) mine site in Finland during the years 2017 and 2018 (base case). In addition, scenarios with a deviation in climatic conditions (Antofagasta case), chemistry (non-heat generation case) and effects of climate change (RCP4.5 (representative concentration pathway) case and RCP8.5 case) were investigated. In the first case, the annual precipitation and evaporation were simulated for a highly arid climate such as in the Antofagasta Mountains, whereas in the second case, an assumption was made of no excess heat generation (exothermic reactions) in the heap reactions. The base case predicted a requirement of 9,000,000 m3 annual discharge of water from the site with the heaviest annual rainfall. The discharge requirement and therefore the water footprint of the plant was shown to be highly dependent on the climatic conditions, as the Antofagasta case predicted a discharge of water from the site as low as zero. Heat generation, typical of the reactions dominating in a boreal black-schist heap leach operation, was shown to be vital for water management operations and therefore discharge management in Nordic climatic conditions (the non-heat generation case), where the discharge requirement was shown to be nearly threefold compared to the base case (2018). If the black-schist ore body resided in Antofagasta, the freshwater consumption would be over eight times the current consumption in the base case in Finland. Climate change scenarios show that the changing climate would increase the range of variation but only increase the need for water discharge from the site by 5% in the wettest years, while raw water utilization would increase by 46 to 83% during the driest years. In general, the results highlight the issues related to the mass and energy balance of a heap leach nickel process, and therefore feasibility—showing that although the heat generation is ore- and process-specific, the water consumption as well as discharge to the surrounding environment is highly dependent on the climatic conditions (precipitation, temperature) in the geographical location.

Abstract Antofagasta Bay is characterized by a high primary productivity due to the presence of the cold Humboldt Stream that is associated with a high diversity in flora and fauna in the benthic and pelagial environments of the Chilean west coast. Nevertheless, due to the global climate changes, the existing biodiversity patterns change as well. The aim of the present study was to analyse Antofagasta Bay for determining the existence of patterns between optical properties of the water, and the phytoplankton and zooplankton. The results show that one site had high chlorophyll concentrations, high reflectance, a high abundance of the dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis, and a high abundance of copepodites, whereas five sites had low chlorophyll concentrations, a low reflectance value, low copepodite abundances, and high abundances of dinoflagellates of the genera Ceratium, Gymnodinium and Prorocentrum. These results are similar to earlier observations for the coastal waters along northern Chile.

El artículo presenta una sistematización de los principales conceptos, acciones y re­sultados del proyecto denominado “Concurso regional de buenas prácticas de innovación pública de la región de Antofagasta”. Dicha iniciativa, ejecutada durante el 2017, tenía como propósito fundamental fortalecer la cultura innovadora en el sector público regional, mediante la realización de talleres y la presentación de propuestas innovadoras elaboradas por los funcionarios públicos de la ciudad de Antofagasta en Chile. Una de las principales conclusiones obtenidas en la ejecución de esta iniciativa se relaciona con la necesidad de desarrollar mayores esfuerzos para generar espacios y plataformas para la difusión de las buenas prácticas e ideas innovadoras de los fun­cionarios públicos a nivel regional, así como más instancias de capacitación sobre el concepto y las metodologías relacionadas con la innovación pública, que permitieran consolidar la incipiente cultura innovadora en las instituciones y servicios públicos regionales observada durante esta experiencia.

Este artículo discute las evidencias de violencia perimortem y las relaciones espaciales de partes esqueletales recuperadas en la Estructura Funeraria 4 del sector I del sitio de Punta de la Peña 9 (Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca, Argentina). Esta estructura, que contiene varios individuos correspondientes a la segunda mitad del primer milenio dC, presenta evidencias de haber sido reabierta en al menos dos eventos de inhumación, lo que produjo alteraciones de los patrones mortuorios y desarticulación de partes anatómicas. Estas reaperturas se relacionan con una dinámica particular de las prácticas de entierro en Antofagasta de la Sierra. Se trata del primer entierro secundario múltiple identificado para el área, el cual incluye a su vez los primeros casos de trauma intencional y muerte en condiciones violentas. Se inhumaron al menos siete individuos de ambos sexos y de distintos rangos de edad, cuatro de los cuales presentan lesiones perimortem en los cráneos, evidencia directa de situaciones de violencia interpersonal para los grupos agropastoriles de este período.

In this study, we sought to understand, from a gender perspective, the experiences of mining couples in Antofagasta, Chile, especially the balance between their intimate lives and the absences of their partners due to the shift work modality. We analyzed testimonies from men and women living in Antofagasta, which is considered to be one of the world’s three largest mining regions. Among the main findings, power relations based on the hegemonic gender model supported by the sexual division of labor were identified, which persist in this mining area, despite progress in gender equality issues in Chile. Although there are differences between the discourses of men and women and their subjective positioning, we propose that both actively collaborate with the reproduction of social gender relations marked by male domination. We propose that the way in which couples live is associated with the organization of mining work and especially the shift system, which is central to the reproduction of the gender order with a heteropatriarchal tone.

El presente texto es una revisión de antecedentes ecotoxicológicos, respecto de la contaminación del norte chileno y, particularmente, acerca de la contaminación por metales pesados y sustancias inorgánicas en Antofagasta; para reflexionar en torno al concepto de Necropolítica (Mbembe, 2011) y Necrocapitalismo (Banerjee, 2008).Considerando la evidencia empírica de la contaminación generada por la Gran Minería, en la Región de Antofagasta, esta debe ser entendida como acción Necropolítica; ya que la generación de riqueza minera, debido al proceso productivo, genera contaminación, lo que deteriora la salud y –dada su característica dosis/dependiente– es un proceso de producción de muerte. Se plantea que el costo vital de la producción económica capitalista minera, es a expensas de vidas humanas, que se sacrifican como contrapartida de este Necrocapitalismo.Por último, se releva la importancia fundamental del accionar individual/colectivo de la comunidad afectada, planteándose la aparición de un sujeto movimental; que fundamenta su acción colectiva en su propia condición biológica, como sujeto enfermo/contaminado (Petryna, 2002) por metales pesados y compuestos inorgánicos. Introducción: La Retinopatía Diabética (RD) es una complicación microangiopática de la diabetes y una de las principales causas de ceguera a nivel mundial. La principal complicación de la RD es el edema macular diabético (EMD). El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar la prevalencia de RD y sus subtipos, así como de EMD en una población de pacientes diabéticos de la atención primaria (APS) de Antofagasta. Materiales y métodos: Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal realizado en una población de 380 pacientes diabéticos diagnosticados y tratados en siete centros de APS de Antofagasta sometidos a control anual de tamizaje de RD mediante retinografía. Se analizó sexo, edad, presencia de RD y subtipos y EMD. Resultados: Se encontró prevalencia de RD de 19.21%. Dentro de este grupo la mayoría (60.27%) fueron hombres y el rango de edad predominante fue 40-64 años con 60.27%. El subtipo más frecuente fue la RD no proliferativa moderada con 45.21% y la prevalencia de EMD fue de 1.84%. Conclusiones: La RD es una complicación prevalente y prevenible, por lo que es necesario mejorar los programas de control metabólico y métodos de screening. Este estudio aporta nuevos datos a la escasa literatura nacional sobre el tema.

Among non-cancer effects of arsenic, cardiovascular diseases have been well documented; however, few are known about the arsenic fate in cardiovascular tissues. We studied the analytic bioinorganic arsenic behaviour in cardiovascular tissues from an arsenic exposure coronary heart disease patient group from Antofagasta-Chile against a small unexposed arsenic coronary heart patient group. Total arsenic concentrations were measured in pieces of cardiovascular tissues of the arsenic-exposed and unexposed coronary heart patient groups by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS); speciation analysis was made by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). Pieces of auricle (AU), mammary artery (MAM), saphenous vein (SAP) and fat residuals (FAT) were considered in this study. The arsenic concentrations in AU and MAM tissues were significantly different between both groups of patients. Also, it was demonstrated that the AU is an ‘As3+ target tissue.’ Otherwise, linking of the total concentrations of arsenic with conditional variables and variables related to medical geology factors allowed us to infer that the latter are more important for the cardiovascular risk of arsenic exposure in the Antofagasta region. Knowledge of total arsenic and the prevalence of the trivalent ion (As3+) in the AU of patients could contribute to understanding the effect of arsenic on cardiovascular diseases.

The orbicular granodiorite of the Cordón de Lila is emplaced within the Ordovician pluton El León, in the southeastern part of Cordón de Lila. This forms a small pipe emplaced in an aplitic band, near the contact with a roof-pendant of amphibole bearing gabbro. The presence of allanite, considered a tracer mineral in magmatic crystallization processes, in the three facies that constitute the pipe (core, margin and matrix) suggests that the orbicules of this granodiorite are the result of magmatic crystallization that affected the magma that originated the orbicular granodiorite.

Concluye que éstos últimos actúan como políticas de enunciación restrictivas de las prácticas transnacionales y la incorporación social y cultural a ambos lados de la frontera.

Con base en entrevistas a profundidad con universidades, proveedores Pymes y compañías mineras, sobre sus prácticas cotidianas de producción, se determinan los sentidos de las interacciones existentes para situarlas en el marco de la innovación de productos y servicios. De esta manera, se propone una interpretación de los sistemas de innovación basada en la Teoría de los Sistemas Sociales, de Niklas Luhmann, para fundamentar los procesos que delimitan y crean a un sistema de innovación en la realidad. Los resultados demuestran que la producción de sentido, en relación con el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías, es una herramienta valiosa para la investigación e intervención pública en los sistemas de innovación.

Observations and pictures of two snakes, Tachymenis peruviana Wiegmann, 1836, and Tachymenis chilensis (Schlegel, 1837), were taken in the Atacama coastal desert, province of Antofagasta, Chile. Furthermore, in the collection of the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Santiago, we found two individuals of T. c. chilensis from Cachapoal and Talca provinces. These records represent a northward extension of the known range of T. c. chilensis along the Andean foothills of more than 180 km.
