Abstract:
Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant systemic disorder of connective tissue. Marfan syndrome affects most organs and tissues, especially the skeleton, lungs, eyes, hearts, and the large blood vessels. It is described by Antoine Marfan in 1896. Aortic root aneurysm and ectopia lentis are the cardinal features. In the absence of family history, the presence of these two manifestations is sufficient for confirmatory diagnosis of Marfan syndrome. Patient with ocular manifestations should be screened for cardiac involvement to support diagnosis. Retinal detachment is a potentially dangerous manifestation for its sight threatening nature. There is no cure for Marfan syndrome, so treatment focuses on managing the symptoms and reducing the risk of complications. Recent advances in diagnosis, improved surgical technique and application of prophylaxis has contributed in preservation of sight in such patients.

Abstract:
Marfan syndrome is named after the French pediatrician Antoine Bernard-Jean Marfan who described in 1896 a girl with arachnodactyly and long limbs1. The patient also had congenital contractures of the elbows and would not fulfill the current criteria for Marfan syndrome. She probably was suffering from a condition that we now call contractural arachnodactyly, caused by mutations in the FBN2 gene.The clinical features of Marfan syndrome affect many systems of the body. The most obvious are the skeletal features, long limbs, tall stature, long thin fingers (arachnodactyly or spider fingers). The skeletal features can be scored objectively as: arm span more than 1.05 x body length; wrist sign (thumb and index finger can encircle the wrist of the other hand with at least one digit overlap) and thumb sign (when making a fist around the thumb, one digit of the thumb sticks out). The main neurological symptom is dural ectasias. The most severe symptoms are cardiovascular: mitralis valve prolapse, aortic dilatation and thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections, which may lead to sudden death5. However, I noticed in discussions with patients that they often consider the ocular symptoms, severe myopia and lens luxation, the worst for themselves, because the latter may lead to blindness.

Abstract:
The article deals with the roots of the crowd scenes in “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov, focusing on such motifs of the novel as death's head hawkmoth and theatrical motifs. The origins of the crowd scenes in Mikhail Bulgakov’s literary work are all connected with the mentioned three motifs. The researcher uses information from the little-known literary, historical, and cultural sources. These include, firstly, the occult works of the Fin de siècle writers, such as novels “The Gloomy House Mystery” and “The New Power” written by the “Criminal Novel Master” Aleksandr Tsehanovich (1862-1896); the play “The Fair God” by David Aizman (who has been justly called “Chekhov of the Jews”) (1860-1922); the story “The Succubus” written by the Belgian writer Antoine Louis Camille Lemonnier. “A House in a Delirium” by a German prose writer W.Hollander. Second, these include literary work by a Soviet writer: story “The Condemned” by Mikhail Kozakov. Third, an important role belongs to sketches from the “The Red Panorama” journal: “The Footsteps Leading Westward” by Jānis Larri, “Travelling from Resort to Resort: Yalta” by D. Gorodinskiy. The plots and details of the named works had a great influence on Mikhail Bulgakov and inspired him while writing such chapters of the novel as “Never Talk with Strangers”, “The Seventh Proof”, “The Chase”, “Praise Be to the Rooster”, “News from Yalta”, “Black Magic and Its Exposure”, “Nikanor Ivanovich’s Dream”, “The Great Ball at Satan's” and some fragments of the auxiliary plot connected with the figure of Pontius Pilate.

Species of the genus Helopelius Reitter, 1922 (type species: Stenomax aeneipennis Allard, 1876) were known from Rhodes and North Africa. We found that two species described from Rhodes belong to the genus Stenohelops Reitter, 1922, and Helopelius can be interpreted as a subgenus within latter, guided by the article 23.2 of ICZN. The following synonyms are proposed: Helopelius, stat. n. (from genus to subgenus) = Stenomaleis Español, 1957, syn. n.; Stenohelops Reitter, 1922 = Gunarellus Reitter, 1922, syn. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) aeneipennis (Allard, 1876) = Helopelius disgregus Reitter, 1922, syn. n., = Gunarus gayirbegi Nabozhenko & Keskin, 2009, syn. n. As a result, the following species are transferred from the former genus Helopelius to the genus Stenohelops: Stenohelops (Helopelius) nodifer (Kraatz, 1880), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) otini (Antoine, 1949), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) subsinuatus (Antoine, 1951), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) verrucosus (Vauloger de Beaupré, 1900), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) zaianus (Antoine, 1949), comb. n. Thus, the subgenus Helopelius contains 11 species from three isolated geographical exclaves: Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean and China. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Marfan syndrome (OMIM #154700) was described for the first time in 1896 by Antoine Bernard-Jean Marfan. It is characterized by its autosomal dominant inheritance pattern, affects 1:5000 of those born alive, and involves the gene that codifies the structural protein fribrillin-1. Fibrillin-1 is critical for the formation of the elastic system backbone and for the negative regulation of the cytokine transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). In the syndrome this fibrillar component causes the degeneration of the fibers of the elastic system, which no longer sequesters matrix TGF-β, causing disorganization of the collagen fibers and vascular smooth muscles. The disease affects mainly the cardiovascular system, cardiovascular problems being the main cause of death. This is because arteries have large amounts of elastic fibers that rupture in an adverse process, causing mainly dissections and aneurisms, which have been better clariied in experimental studies with mice. Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct an etiopathogenic and molecular review to describe the advances in the understanding of blood vessel dysmorphism in the syndrome, especially of the aorta. Materials and Methods: For this purpose the literature of the last 35 years was extensively reviewed. Conclusion: The origin of the aortic dysmorphism in the syndrome stems from a number of events that begin with the mutation of the gene fibrillin-1, causing fragmentation of the aortic elastic fibers. Excess cytokine TGF-β increases the amount of metalloproteinases and of vascular smooth muscle cell apoptosis, leading to matrix remodeling and increasing the susceptibility of the vessel to an aneurysm or dissecting process.

This short notice presents the editio princeps (first edition) of ʿAntara’s Muʿallaqa, due to Vincent Elie Menil (1790-1825), a pupil of Joannes Willmet (1750-1835), and published in Leiden in 1816. It also presents the review written by Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838) in the Journal des savans in March 1817. As a matter of fact, the edition and the review are bound together in the copy owned by the author of this notice. antonio favaro was born in padua on 21 may 1847 to a cultivated family of lower nobility. after having accomplished his studies in mathematics at the university of padua in 1866, he went to turin, where he specialized as an engineer at the scuola d’applicazione (polytechnical high school) in 1869. as early as 1872, he was appointed as extra-ordinary professor at the university of padua. for fifty years he taught graphical statics there. during different periods he also gave courses in infinitesimal calculus and projective geometry. since 1878 favaro, as one of the first in an italian university, also taught history of mathematics. he died in padua on 30 september 1922, shortly after his retirement.

Pérez Bonalde (1846-1892) was a poet and translator from Venezúela who spent a important part of his life in the United States. This article focusses on one of his most outstanding literary merits: his early translation of the famous poem by E. A. Poe The Raven, El cuervo. It´s irnportance and influence in the development of the Hispanic Modernism is remembered, but commentaries and examples of the talent and resources of Pérez Bonalde, as a successful translator, fill the lines of most of the following paragraphs. Especially those related to the vocabulary and metrics. El cuervo supposes a real effort to faithfully adapt the original poem and denotes a profound knowledge of the American and Hispanic literary traditions.

The Yi-jing易經(Canon of Changes), or Zhou yi周易(All-Encompassing Cyclical Changes of the Zhou [era]), is “the book of books” of Chinese culture, which is also claimed to be the primary source of binary numeration, first described in the West by Leibniz. He was always interested in China, familiar with the binary code of tri and hexagrams (gua) of the Yi-jing and acknowledged its mythical creator, the ancestor emperor Fuxi, as the discoverer of binary arithmetic, and himself – as the one who found it again after four thousand years. At present, historical data do not allow us making an accurate conclusion about the dependence or independence of this outstanding discovery in Europe from the Chinese prototype. The time of the penetration of the initial information about the Yi-jing into Europe is still hidden by a veil of secrecy. The lack of a message about it in the book of Marco Polo is one of its mysteries. At the same time in the Mediterranean area traces of acquaintance with the Yi-jing studies are visible in such cultural phenomena as astrology and alchemy, Kabbalah and the teachings of Ramon Llull, sextine and hexachord. The beginning of the European study of the Yi-jing was laid by Jesuit missionaries who arrived in China at theend of the 16th century. Among them, by the end of the 17 th century, a whole trend of “Yi-jingists” or “figuralists” was formed. They saw Yi-jing as the Chinese Bible, embodying the original Divine Revelation in the form of the kabbalistic “figures” of the gua and being an expression of the common, sacred and antediluvian “hieroglyphic science” of the ancient world, that is, “Metaphysics of numbers, or general scientific method”, “containing all other knowledge”. Apparentlythe first information in Russia about the Yi-jing was published by the first Russiansinologist, German historian and philologist-polyglot G. (Th.) S. Bayer in the two-volume Museum Sinicum (Petersburg, 1730) in Latin. In Russian the primary in -formation about Yi-jing became available to the reader half a century later owing to the coryphaeus of Russian sinology of the 18th century Aleksei L. Leontiev. In 1782 he published an illustrated and commented translation of a fragment from Yi-jing (named Convenient Base) as an appendix to his translation of the Manchu text of the Statutes of the Great Qing (大清會典Dai-Qing hui-dian). Leontiev mentioned the French abbot who visited St. Petersburg in 1769 as the initiator of his appeal to the Yi-jing, but did not indicate his name. Petr E. Skachkov (1892–1964) agreed with Vsevolod S. Kolokolov (1896–1979) that this abbot was the famous French Jesuit missionary and versatile scientist Antoine Gaubil (1689–1759). However, he died ten years earlier. Most likely the interlocutor of Leontiev was a well-known theologian and economist-physiocrat, French abbot Nicolas Baudeau (1730–1792), who held confidential negotiations with Catherine IIin 1769 in St. Petersburg in connection with the situation in Poland. The secrecy of this mission on the eve of the first partition of Poland fully explains the concealment of his name in 1782 when he was still alive and preparing the second partition of Poland. Apparently, a look at the Yi-jing of the French enlighteners184 and physiocrats, expressed by F. Quesnay (1694–1774) and reported by Baudeauto Leontiev prompted him to link the ancient canon with Statutes of the Great Qing. Vasilii P. Vasiliev (1818–1900) expressed a number of original thoughts about the Yi-jing, which may have influenced the creation of his graphic system of Chinese characters and Mendeleev periodic table. Yulian K. Shchutsky (1897–1938), the first Russian researcher who specially studied the Yi-jing and wrote an extensive monograph about it, strangely ignored the statements of his domestic predecessors, but his innovative approach anticipated the neo-mystic Jungian tendency in Western interpretations of the Canon in the 20 th century. Due to the psychologization and aestheticization of the Yi-jing sanctified by world authorities in this field, after the Second World War this neo-mysticism penetrated the mass Western culture which repeated the initial success prepared by figuralists three centuries earlier on a new level and larger scale.

Summary The 1905 book Essai d’analyse psychologique du méchanisme du langage dans la compréhension by Henri Odier (1873–1938) is noteworthy for containing the first published report of details of the sign theory of Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913). This article discusses those details and Odier’s interpretations of them, which stray considerably from what Saussure intended, to judge from his later lectures. Because it is known that Saussure owned a copy of Odier’s book and he appears to have read it carefully, an examination is made of significant references Odier makes to other work. Finally, the negative review of Odier’s book by Antoine Meillet (1866–1936) is considered.

Bright 1966), cet article main-tient qu'une telle approche du langage existait depuis longtemps, peut-etre plus de cent ans. En d'autres mots, nous avangons qu'il y avait une sociolin-guistique bien avant la lettre. En effet, on retrouve dans la linguistique generate de Wiliam Dwight Whitney (1827-1894) et de Heymann Steinthal (1823-1899) et dans quel-ques articles de Michel Breal (1832-1915) des annees 60 et 70 du siecle dernier des observations qui mettent en relief la nature sociale du langage. Les dialectologues de la meme periode, surtout en France et dans les pays de langue allemande, etaient tout a fait conscients du fait que l'etude des patois, des parlers et des langues orales en general devait etre guidee par des considerations sociologiques (v. Malkiel 1976). Dans la linguistique compa-ree et historique c'est Antoine Meillet (1866-1936), eleve de Saussure et de Breal et collaborates de la revue d'Emile Durkheim, Vannee sociologique, au debut de notre siecle, qui a insiste sur l'importance de l'aspect social (et sociologique) dans l'etude du changement linguistique (par ex., Meillet 1905). Avec ses eleves de Paris, surtout Joseph Vendryes (1875-1960), Alf Sommerfelt (1892-1965) et Marcel Cohen (1884-1974), Meillet etablit l'ecole sociologique du langage (par ex., Vendryes 1921; Sommerfelt 1932; Cohen 1956). Enfin, il existe — a cote de la dialectologie et de l'histoire des langues — encore une troisieme source de la sociolinguistique: l'etude du bilinguisme (par ex., Max Weinreich 1931; Haugen 1953). Ces trois traditions de la recherche linguistique se trouvent toutes reunis dans l'etude de Uriel Weinreich (1926-1967), Languages in Contact (1953), et puisque l'ouvrage de William Labov de 1966, The Social Stratification of English in New York City, qui est souvent cite (bien a tort) comme point de depart de la sociolo-gie moderne, representait sa these de doctorate ecrite sous la direction de Weinreich, il n'est pas etonnant de voir ces traditions, surtout celles de la linguistique geographique et de la linguistique historique, maintenues dans l'oeuvre de Labov (par ex., 1976, 1982). SUMMARY Although the term 'sociolinguistics' was not introduced into linguistic nomenclature before 1952 (see Currie 1952) and the field became a recognized field of research in the late 1960s only (e.g., Bright 1966), it is clear that the subject did not begin two decades ago. Indeed, an investigation into the sources of 'sociolinguistics' reveals that its beginnings go back at least 100 years, to the work of William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894), Heymann Steinthal (1823-1899), Michel Breal (1832-1915), and others. However, these were the first programmatic statements and a number of developments in the study of language were necessary to converge upon the kind of sociolinguistics which most students of language associate with the name of William Labov (e.g., Labov 1966), at least in North America. Interestingly enough, it is also in the work of Labov (e.g., 1972) that the origins of 'sociolinguistics' (to some extent in contradistinction to the 'sociology of language' approach associated with Basil Bernstein, Joshua A. Fishman, and others) could be traced, although neither Labov nor the prolific Dell Hymes has written anything on the history of sociolinguistics. (Indeed, the only paper that comes close to it was written by an outsider to the field, the great Romance scholar Yakov Malkiel, in 1976.) In my paper, I shall demonstrate that there are essentially three major traditions of investigation that led to 'sociolinguistics', namely, (1) Dialectology, especially the work done in German-speaking lands and in France from the 1870s onwards (e.g., Georg Wenker [1852-1911], Jules Gillieron [1854-1926], and others) — part of which had been undertaken in an effort to verify and possibility to support the neogrammarian 'regularity hypothesis' of sound changes; (2) Historical Linguistics, in particular the kind advocated by Antoine Meillet (1866-1936) and his school (e.g., Meillet 1905; Vendryes 1921), which developed into a 'science sociologique' of linguistics in general (Sommerfelt 1932) and a 'sociologie du langage' (e.g., Cohen 1956) among the younger Meillet disciples, and (3) Bilingualism Studies (e.g., Max Weinreich 1931; Haugen 1953), traditions all of which can be found united in the 1953 study of Uriel Weinreich (1926-1967), who happens to have been Labov's teacher and mentor.

Neste artigo, comentamos a nossa tradução de “A Few Crusted Characters” (1894), de Thomas Hardy, a partir da questão da multiplicidade de vozes textuais e de gêneros narrativos presentes no texto original. Tais aspectos, considerados como fundamentais da prosa poética por Mikhail Bakhtin (2002), são o ponto de partida para discutir as soluções tradutórias para a retextualização das vozes dos vários narradores das histórias, algumas apresentando marcas de dialeto e a inserção e subversão de diversos gêneros utilizados por Hardy. Com isso, procuramos pensar o papel da tradução comentada no âmbito da reflexão geral sobre o traduzir, visto que, para Antoine Berman (2013), esses aspectos são um dos maiores desafios da tradução de prosa.

O presente artigo é o resultado de uma pesquisa de Historiografia da Tradução que visa apresentar alguns apontamentos historiográficos sobre a publicação e a recepção da tradução em francês de Paraíso Perdido, de Milton, feita por François-René de Chateaubriand, em 1836. Ele propunha realizar uma tradução literal, “palavra por palavra, como um dicionário”, o que demarcaria, na visão de Chateaubriand, uma “revolução na maneira de traduzir”. O estudioso da tradução George Mounin considera essa obra um dos marcos da transformação na maneira francesa de traduzir. Já Antoine Berman a evoca na sua defesa de uma tradução literal na contemporaneidade. A partir do modelo histórico descritivo de Historiografia da Tradução de Brigitte Lépinette, buscamos compreender as noções de autor e tradutor implícitos nos discursos de Chateaubriand e de seus críticos ao se reportarem à obra por ele traduzida.

Cet article fait état de la place qu’occupe l’institutionnalisation dans les stratégies de contrôle de la délinquance juvénile au Québec entre les années 1869 et 1950. La décision de confier la gestion du réseau d’écoles de réforme et d’écoles d’industrie à des communautés religieuses dont le personnel est nombreux et peu coûteux s’avère profitable dans le contexte de la naissance de la Confédération et permet à la province de se placer à l’avant-garde canadienne en cette matière. La situation s’inverse au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, les législateurs québécois ne suivant que très lentement la tendance nord-américaine d’établir des tribunaux pour mineurs permettant l’implantation de mesures en milieu ouvert (probation, familles d’accueil, etc.). L’exemple de l’Institut Saint-Antoine pour garçons délinquants illustre cette évolution. Abstract:
This article investigates the Russian Orthodox presence and activities in Christianity’s sacred historical center of the Holy Land from the 1840s, when Russia expanded its consular activities in Palestine and began its first spiritual missions to this region, through the end of the nineteenth century. The article particularly centers on the active leadership of Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), who served as the leader of the Russian Ecclesiastical mission in Jerusalem from 1865 to 1894. A prodigious scholar of the Orthodox East, Antonin resourcefully developed a respected Russian presence in Palestine, raised substantial funds for the assistance of Russian pilgrims and for the accumulation of properties throughout the Holy Land, and continued his intensive studies and publications on the region’s history, archeology, and human geography. Frary illustrates how the archimandrite in these pursuits exhibited an impressive ability for flexible and sensitive adaptation to a non-Russian, non-Orthodox environment that was revealed in his own scholarly work and in his successes in constructing new regional centers of Orthodoxy in Palestine.

Dans l’œuvre huysmansienne, en particulier celle de la transition entre sa phase décadente, marquée par Là-bas (1891), et la période du naturalisme mystique, dont le fruit le plus mûr reste La Cathédrale (1898), il est possible de retracer la transformation complète et profonde du traitement de la vanitas. Le présent article propose une analyse de trois étapes de cette évolution. Il part de la vanitas macabre de Là-bas, proche de l’esthétique de Félicien Rops, auquel Huysmans s’intéresse dans les années 1880, et du motif de la tentation de saint Antoine dans les arts de la fin du Moyen-Âge et du début de Renaissance. Ensuite, il examine l’approche huysmansienne à la Crucifixion de Cassel et au retable d’Issenheim de Matthias Grünewald, qui constitue un passage entre l’esthétique de la danse macabre et celle du naturalisme mystique. Finalement, il étudie le legs des ekphraseis de Grünewald : l’apologie de la vie et un regard nouveau sur la vanitas dans La Cathédrale.

Résumé Si en 1826, Jean-Jacques Porchat avait ouvert la voie à la fable en Suisse romande, quelques années plus tard, le genevois Antoine Carteret en suivra dignement l'exemple. Au XIXe siècle, on assiste à la naissance d'une littérature nationale et populaire, une "littérature romande" où ce qui fait l'identité helvétique la plus profonde et la plus originale ce sont les Alpes. Et c'est par le biais de ces Alpes et de leur célébration que notre fabuliste atteint donc cette dimension helvétique. Mais Carteret est aussi, et avant tout, fabuliste; il a compris parfaitement la valeur que peut avoir la fable au XIXe siècle et ses apologues sont souvent de véritables petits chefs-d'oeuvre dans lesquels il fait agir et parler les animaux avec une très grande habileté. En bon genevois, notre poète s'exprime librement, dans ses petites pièces, avec une sincérité totale et une indépendance hors du commun. Il a réussi à doter ce genre littéraire d'une richesse supplémentaire de saine morale et d'un doux entrain.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTA carved coping stone found on the site of a spring near the amphitheatre, Silchester, and first reported in 1873, was rediscovered in 2014. It does not compare in its carved detail with coping stones from the amphitheatres at Chester and London, nor with that recovered from the West Gate, Silchester, in 1890; nor does its basal width correspond with that of the arena wall of the Silchester amphitheatre. It is likely to have formed part of a monumental basin, similar to that found at Coventina's Well, Northumberland, and to have commemorated the location of a spring and its associated (unknown) deity. Similarity with the type and decoration of architectural stone used in the construction of the forum-basilica suggests a Hadrianic–Antonine date.
