Each year for the past decade, the French vocal and instrumental ensemble Les Arts Florissants has visited the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Abstracttitle SUMMARY /title After the publication of the scientific instructions of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Philippe Pinel, here we present other unpublished documents (by Louis-Claude-Marie Richard, Lezerme and Antoine-Franois Fourcroy). These documents relate to the expedition, in search of La Perouse, made by D'Entrecasteaux (1791), the scientific organization of which was under the direction of the Societe d'histoire naturelle of Paris.

Abstract:
We aim to explore in this work the evolutionary component that pervades biological naturalism, a theory proposed by the contemporary philosopher John Rogers Searle as a solution to the mind-body problem. Initially, we give a historical overview of the evolutionary conceptions of Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet (Knight of Lamarck) and Charles Robert Darwin. Next, we employ the distinction set forth by Ernst Mayr between Evolutionary Biology and Functional Biology to argue that Searle is committed to both biases when he asserts that mental phenomena are biological phenomena. Finally, we de

If Antoine-Marie Garin is remembered today, it’s likely to be in Nelson, where he was Roman Catholic parish priest for very nearly forty years (1850-89). Born in eastern France, near Lyon, in 1810 to a comfortable middle-class family, Garin trained as a priest for his local diocese but after ordination and three years of parish work he joined the new missionary order, the Society of Mary. Marist priests and brothers had already accompanied Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pompallier to Aotearoa in 1838; Garin was one of a number who arrived early in 1841. In late 1843 Garin went to Mangakāhia, to run the

Introduction The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw a burst of interest by European powers in the scientific exploration of the Pacific. Well-equipped expeditions were sent to the far side of the world, although the technology of the time limited navigators’ ability to record their routes accurately. The journals and other publications produced by European expeditions to the Pacific are storehouses of observations of places and people, and the self-consciously scientific expeditions of this period provide particularly rich descriptions of the physical world they had set out to
