Cette thèse vise à rendre compte conjointement des jugements de valeurs de vérité non-bivalents, c'est-à-dire des jugements ne correspondant ni à « Vrai » ni à « Faux », déclenchés par des phrases présuppositionnelles (telles que 1 en contexte où Oscar n'est pas français), vagues (telles que 2 en contexte où Oscar est de taille moyenne) ou encore hybrides (telles que 3 en contexte où l'interlocuteur est de taille moyenne).1. Oscar a réalisé que tu es français.2. Oscar est vieux.3. Oscar a réalisé que tu es vieux.Sur la base de systèmes logiques définissant trois valeurs de vérité (vrai, faux et autre) proposés dans la littérature sur le vague tout comme dans la littérature sur la présupposition, j'élabore dans un premier temps un système à cinq valeurs de vérité ordonnées, qui définit ainsi trois paliers intermédiaires entre le vrai et le faux.Suite à l'obtention de résultats expérimentaux incompatibles avec les prédictions de ce système, je propose dans un deuxième temps un système à quatre valeurs de vérité non ordonnées, compatible avec les résultats et qui place cette fois le vague et la présupposition sur des dimensions distinctes. Une expérience menée avec Paul Égré établit par ailleurs que les locuteurs rejettent systématiquement des descriptions contradictoires comme « vieux et jeune », mais qu'ils peuvent accepter des descriptions contradictoires comme "ni vieux ni jeune", "ni veux ni pas vieux" et "vieux et pas vieux". Ces résultats confortent l'idée qu'une phrase vague comme 1 peut être jugée "Ni vraie ni fausse" mais aussi "Vraie et fausse", et nous permettent de discriminer entre deux approches concurrentes de l'antonymie adjectivaleThe aim of my thesis is to give a uniform account of non-bivalent truth-value judgments induced by presuppositional expressions and by vague expression (namely judgments other than "True" or "False"). For example, a presuppositional sentence like 1 below is typically judged neither true nor false in a context where Oscar is not French, and a vague sentence like 2 is also reported as neither true or nor false in a context where Oscar is of an average height. The same holds of a hybrid sentence like 3, combining a vague adjective and a presuppositional expression, in a context where the interlocutor is of an average height:1. Oscar has realized that you are French.2. Oscar is old.3. Oscar has realized that you are old. Abstract:Drawing on systems defining three logical values (true, false and other) and discussed both in the literature on vagueness and in the literature on presupposition, I propose a system with five totally ordered values, thereby defining three intermediate levels between true and false.After collecting experimental data conflicting with the predictions of this system, I propose a system with four values which is compatible with the experimental results and where the four values are partially ordered along a dimension specific to vagueness and along a dimension specific to presupposition.To get further insights about truth-value judgments specific to vagueness, I conducted another set of experiments (in collaboration with Paul Égré), showing that speakers systematically reject contradictory descriptions of the form "old and young" but that they can accept contradictory descriptions of the form "neither old nor young", "neither old nor not old" and "old and not old". These results echo the idea that vague sentences like 1 can be judged "Neither true nor false" but also "True and false", and allow us to discriminate between two competing theories of adjectival antonyms

This project begins with the observation that mapping culture in Early Modern England underwent explosive changes that profoundly effected the spatial perspectives of individuals. In order to understand the extent of such effects, this thesis examines the resonance between maps and theater in Early Modern England using Shakespeare's Antony of Antony and Cleopatra as a model for how individuals may have responded to maps in Early Modern England. The subject of conflicting spatial desires, Antony and his very body become a site of tension and resistance both within the play and upon the stage. As such, this project argues that Antony's body in Antony and Cleopatra demonstrates not only an Early Modern English anxiety regarding mapped space, but also a method of resistance to mapped space for Early Modern audiences.

Les risques des décharges électrostatiques (DES) sur des dispositifs et systèmes électroniques dépend de l'état de charge de l'opérateur et des objets situés à proximité. Cette thèse a eu comme objectif de contribuer à la mise au point d'une méthodologie de mesure pour caractériser l'état de charge des opérateurs et des matériaux textiles, afin d'établir leur capacité de produire DES nuisibles. Des méthodes de mesure directes et indirectes ont été proposées pour l'évaluation de la charge des opérateurs dans trois situations d'intérêt pratique. D'autres techniques, telles que la mesure de potentiel de surface et de l'intensité du champ électrique ont été utilisées pour le monitoring de l'état de charge des matériaux textiles. Des modèles comportementaux ont été établis pour la charge et la décharge de ces matériaux, en faisant appel à la méthodologie des plans d'expériences. Les essais réalisés sur des échantillons de polypropylène et de polyester ont permis de valider aussi deux méthodes permettant d'accélérer la diminution de la charge des médias isolants non-tissés en utilisant des générateurs d'ions ou des décharges couronne produites par des électrodes alimentées à des hautes tensions sinusoïdales ou triangulaires, de fréquences allant jusqu’à 400 Hz. Un exemple d'accumulation d'électricité statique sur une plaquette de silicium est aussi discuté, en rapport avec une application à la fabrication des microsystèmes électromécaniques. L'amélioration de la méthodologie de mesure est un pré-requis pour l'adoption des meilleures stratégies destinées à maîtriser les risques électrostatiques dans un environnement industrielThe risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) on electronic devices and systems depends on the charge state of the operator and nearby objects. This thesis aimed at contributing to the development of a measurement methodology to characterize the state of charge of the operators and textile materials, in order to determine their ability to produce harmful effects. Direct and indirect measuring methods have been proposed for assessing the charge of operators in three situations of practical interest. Other techniques, such as surface potential and electric field intensity measurements were used for monitoring the state of charge of textile materials. Behavioural models have been established for the charging and discharging of these materials, using the methodology of experimental design. Tests on samples of polypropylene and polyester have also validated two methods for accelerating the reduction of the charge of insulating nonwoven media using ion generators or corona discharge produced by electrodes energized from sinusoidal or triangular high voltage supplies, at frequencies up to 400 Hz. An example of static electricity on a silicon wafer is also discussed in relation with an application to the fabrication of mechanical and electronic micro-systems. Refinement of the measurement methodology is a prerequisite for the adoption of best strategies to control electrostatic risks in an industrial environment

Lexical relations have been thoroughly investigated cross-linguistically (Lyons, 1977; Cruse, 1986; Murphy, 2003). Antonymy is particularly interesting because antonymous pairs share both syntagmatic as well as paradigmatic relations. Studies (such as Raybeck and Herrmann, 1996) agree on the universality of this lexical relation; however, different perspectives towards opposition have been noted among different cultures (Murphy et al., 2009; Jones et al., 2012; Hsu, 2015). The present corpus-driven study investigates antonym use in Modern Standard Arabic text using an on-line corpus (arTenTen12) and a newspaper corpus (arabiCorpus). This thesis shows that antonym functions in Arabic are to a certain degree similar to those found in other languages. A new classification of these functions is presented and compared to previously identified functions in English text (Jones, 2002; Davies, 2013). The main difference between this classification and previous ones is in the category Ancillary Antonymy. In this category, canonical antonyms trigger contrast in non-contrastive pairings. The ancillary use of antonyms is presented as an effect projected on other words regardless of the hosting construction. As a consequence of removing this category, other functions of antonym use were identified. The present study also shows that a Sign-Based Construction Grammar (SBCG) account of antonyms can capture their syntagmatic and paradigmatic properties. Antonyms lend themselves well as pairings of meaning and form and therefore can be treated as constructions (Jones et al., 2012). Therefore, a treatment of antonyms using SBCG is presented in this study. Based on this treatment, I present a SBCG account of Arabic coordination as a contrastive construction in which antonyms frequently occur. The coordination construction is then compared to one use of coordination that presents antonym pairs as units referring to one concept.

This thesis aims to reexamine the index as a sign that generates meaning in the sculptural oeuvre of contemporary British artist Antony Gormley. The artist has consistently proclaimed his work to be indexical but has never offered clarification of the term. Rather, he adheres to the definition developed in the late nineteenth century by the term's originator, Charles Sanders Peirce. This is problematic because it gives false meaning to the indexical sign in a contemporary context. By comparing Gormley's use of the term in his sculptural practice to Peirce's theories and those of art historian Rosalind Krauss, who was the first to significantly and convincingly relate the index to art, this study will attempt to provide a contemporized definition of the index. This thesis aims to offer a clarification in the meaning of Antony Gormley's sculpture and demonstrate the index's ability to offer resolution to what is contemporary about contemporary art.

A problem is detected in how only, traditionally viewed, associates with Negative Quantifiers (NQs) like few, [at most n], and [less than n]. The predicted meanings, which negate the stronger alternatives of the relevant NQs, is shown to be incorrect. The attested meanings are shown to be truth-conditionally equivalent to the result of removing only, hence giving the illusion that only is vacuous. It is further observed that, given an NQ, sentences where only appears to be vacuous become ungrammatical when the NQ is replaced with its positive counterpart. I argue for a view that relates the two phenomena: the ungrammaticality of the only-positive cases explains the unavailability of the predicted meanings in only-negative cases. The attested readings for the negatives, where only appears to be vacuous, is derived from LFs that feature a silent existential quantifier above the NQ. Thesis supervisor:

This dissertation falls within the area of concentration in Creative Writing and is divided into two parts: the first, a work of fiction and the second, a reflective essay. Narrated in first person, the novel Antonia in the City accompanies the journey of Antonia, the protagonist, after her life changed as result of her oldest sister's su-icide. The character sees herself helpless in a large urban center, in need of solv-ing the bureaucratic issues related to her death and, at the same time, she tries to unravel the reasons that led to the tragic death of her sister. The essay follows issues related to the creative process, and proposes a reflection on the metaphor of water, a recurring element in Antonia in the City. To do so, the theories of Gaston Bachelard on the imaginary of water are used.

Septimius Bassianus prend le nom de Marcus Aurelius Antoninus en hommage à l’empereur Marc Aurèle et est très tôt associé au pouvoir. Антонімія вже довгий час знаходиться в центрі уваги науковців. В середині XIX століття з’явилися перші словники антонімів, а в 50-ті роки ХХ століття почалося широке вивчення цього лінгвістичного явища, проте, такий різновид цього лінгвістичного явища як контекстуальна антонімія досі лишається малодослідженим.
Задля вирішення зазначеної проблеми було проведено дослідження, у ході якого використовувалися як загальнонаукові, так і спеціальні лінгвістичні методи: порівняння, компонентний аналіз, контекстуальний аналіз, метод інтроспекції.
У ході дослідження було дано чітку дефініцію оказіональної антонімії, визначено основні способи перекладу контекстуальних антонімічних опозицій та умови здійснення їх адекватного перекладу. Також запропоновано методичну базу для розкриття теми перекладу оказіональних антонімічних опозицій на заняттях з практики перекладу.
Роботу можна використовувати для подальших лінгвістичних досліджень структурно-семантичних, функціональних та прагматичних особливостей мовних одиниць німецької мови для більш детального їх вивчення та розробки методичної і довідкової літератури.
Мета: Метою наукової розвідки є визначення способів вирішення перекладацьких труднощів, що виникли як наслідок вживання антонімічних опозицій та знаходження дієвого алгоритму навчання перекладу антонімічних опозицій.
Теоретичне значення: розширення аспектології теорії антонімії, що має істотне значення з огляду на орієнтування сучасної лінгвістики на антропоцентризм у вивченні лінгвальних одиниць, а також в розробці методологічної літератури з проблеми перекладу оказіональних антонімічних опозицій. Отримані результати можуть бути використані при подальшому дослідженні теорії антонімії, а також теорії перекладу.Antonymy has long been at the centre of scientists concerns. In the middle of the XIX century, the first dictionaries of the antonyms appeared, and in the 1950s a widespread study of this linguistic phenomenon began, however, this kind of linguistic phenomenon (contextual antonymy) still remains poorly investigated. In order to solve this problem, a study was conducted, in which both, general scientific and special linguistic methods were used: comparison, component analysis, contextual analysis, method of introspection. In the course of the study, a clear definition of ocсasional antonymy was given, the main ways of translating contextual antonymic opposition and the conditions for their adequate translation were determined. Also, a methodological basis for the disclosure of the translation of occasional antonymic opposition in classes on the practice of translation has been suggested. The work can be used for further linguistic studies of structural-semantic, functional and pragmatic features of the German language units for a more detailed study and development of methodological and reference literature. Goal: The purpose of the study is to determine the ways of solving translation difficulties that arose as a consequence of the use of antonymic opposition and finding an effective algorithm for teaching the translation of antonymic opposition. Theoretical meaning: the expansion of the aspectology of the antonymy theory, which is essential in view of the orientation of modern linguistics to anthropocentrism in the study of linguistic units, as well as in the development of methodological literature on the translation of occasional antonymic opposition. The obtained results can be used for further study of the antonymy theory, as well as the theory of translation.

This collection of stories is based on the author’s experiences as a middle school teacher at an alternative campus in south Texas, in a district whose population was largely comprised of Mexican-American and low-income families. The Eagle School is based on a program that existed in the 1990s to address the special needs of “bubble” students, children who were failing in elementary school because of factors such as poverty, neglect, and violence at home. Students were selected for the program based on recommendations from their counselors, with the hope that the small campus of twelve teachers would provide its 150 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders with a safe haven, allowing them to focusing on their studies. The ultimate goals of the program were to prevent students from dropping out of school and to engage them in interdisciplinary projects that would advance them academically, preparing them to return to their appropriate grade levels in high school. Ms. Russel, a character based on the author, recounts stories of her efforts to help students at the Eagle School, as well as stories of her own friendships, aspirations, and disappointments off campus. Each story represents a distinct moment during the six years that she teaches at the Eagle School, and each focuses on a specific student or group of students whose conflicts complicate her own.

Resumo: O presente trabalho tem por objetivo investigar como o jesuíta português Antônio Vieira (1608-1697) apresenta a figura de Santo Antônio nos sermões que lhe dedicou, buscando perceber por que lhe atribui determinados significados naquele momento histórico. Para tanto, partindo de uma descrição analítica dos nove Sermões de Santo Antônio de Vieira, estabelecemos comparações entre estas prédicas e narrativas hagiográficas antonianas medievais e modernas, a fim de demonstrar que, ao apropriar-se destas, o jesuíta ressignifica a figura do taumaturgo lisboeta
Abstract: The present dissertation investigates how the portuguese jesuit Antônio Vieira (1608-1697) represents Saint Anthony in the sermons that were dedicated to him. The objective is to understand why Vi eira attributed certain meanings to Saint Anthony in that historical period. Therefore, this work analyses how Vieira, in the nine Saint Anthony's Sermons, gives other meanings to the Saint' s figure, by appropriating Saint Anthony' s medieval and modern hagiographic narratives

Al hacer el recorrido del camino investigativo para la producción de la disertación, he interactuado con los entrevistados y populares que narraron los hechos vividos, las experiencias vivenciadas en el día a día de la frontera geográfica entre las dos localidades, bien como identificaron los locales de encuentro entre los fronterizos, en el ir y venir en la frontera de Santo Antonio do Sudoeste y San Antonio y dialoga con los siguientes autores, Bhabha (1998, 2003), Baumann (1998), Burke (2003), Camblong (2006), Certeau (2007, 2011, 2013), Fiorin (2001) Hall (2000, 2003, 2006), Maffesoli (2004), entre otros. Para el desenvolvimiento de la investigación, elegí el siguiente problema de pesquisa: ¿Cómo ocurre el proceso de identidad e identificación entre los fronterizos residentes en Santo Antonio do Sudoeste en el Brasil y San Antonio en la Argentina? A partir del problema escogí los siguientes objetivos: a) Investigar los procesos de identidad e identificación de los sujetos que viven en la frontera de Santo Antonio do SudoesteBrasil y San Antonio-Argentina. b) Registrar la memoria de los sujetos fronterizos identificando sus narrativas y socialidades. c) Identificar formas de interacción experimentadas por los sujetos que circulan en la frontera en el locus de la pesquisa y sus procesos de construcción de la memoria e identidad. d) Comprender los aspectos educativos/formativos que se establecen entre los sujetos fronteirizos en los procesos de construcción de la identidad. Para responder a los cuestionamientos de la investigación fueron usadas las entrevistas narrativas, a partir de la alocución a ser formulada “ser fronterizo es...” , el registro fotográfico y los apuntes en el diario de campo. En el término de la escrituración de este trabajo, concluí que el local pesquisado es un espacio social formativo, en que los argentinos y brasileños establecen cambios en el cotidiano. La identidad se (re) afirma en las diferencias culturales de los sujetos fronteirizos. La memoria toma el papel de mediadora entre el pasado y el presente que aflora en las narrativas de los entrevistados que presentan riesgos de hibridismo en el lenguaje y en las interacciones sociales propias de este local de frontera.

Negationsaffigering av adjektiv förekommer i flera indoeuropeiska språk. Tidigare studier visar på tydliga mönster, som att den affigerade stammen ofta är avledd och har positivt värde. Affigeringen skapar en negativ antonym till det affigerade ordet. Syftet med denna korpusstudie är att undersöka o-prefixet i dagens svenska. I första delen undersöks prefigerade stammars form och värde. Studiens resultat visar att 91,5 % av de 563 mest frekventa orden har en avledd stam, många av dessa är deverbala. Bland de 100 mest frekventa orden har stammen främst positivt värde. Det förekommer asymmetri i prefixets användning. 11,2 % av studiens prefigerade stammar har inte en icke-prefigerad form. 48 av de 100 mest frekventa orden tillhör den semantiska typen MÄNSKLIG BENÄGENHET. Studiens andra del undersöker antonymförhållanden mellan prefigerade och icke-prefigerade ord. I de få fall där det inte råder ett direkt antonymförhållande har det prefigerade ordet ofta en mer generell och abstrakt betydelse än det icke-prefigerade. Det prefigerade ordet kan också ha en äldre, inaktuell betydelse av stammen. Denna studie visar inga tydliga mönster i generalitet eller abstrakthet i betydelse mellan prefigerade ord och lexikala antonymer till den icke-prefigerade stammen.Affixal negation of adjectives occur in several Indo-European languages. Previous studies show recurring patterns: the affixed stem is derived and has a positive value. The affixation creates a negative antonym. This corpus-based study examines the prefix o- in modern Swedish. The form and value of prefixed stems are investigated. The results of this study show that 91.5 % of the 563 most frequent prefixed words have a derived stem and many are deverbal. Among the 100 most frequent words, the stems have a positive value. Asymmetry in the use of the prefix occurs. 11.2 % of the study’s prefixed stems do not have a non-prefixed form. 48 of the 100 most frequent words belong to the semantic type HUMAN PROPENSITY. The second part of this study investigates the antonymic relationship between prefixed and non-prefixed words. The prefixed word often has a more general and abstract meaning when there is no direct antonymic relationship. The prefixed word may also have an older meaning, which is no longer used today. This study shows no clear patterns in differences in generality and abstractness in meaning between the prefixed word and the lexical antonym to the non-prefixed word.

O projeto consistiu em interferências feitas nas capas de alguns exemplares do jornal O Dia. O presente trabalho investiga as condições em que esta obra foi desenvolvida, bem como a noção de alteridade do artista como um outro que também informa, na medida em que realiza um projeto gráfico clandestino.
In the beginning of the 1970, visual artist Antonio Manuel accomplished the work known as Super jornais-clandestinos (Super newspapers - clandestine). The project consisted of interventions, on some copies, along the front pages of a few issues of daily newspaper O Dia. The present work intends to investigate the circumstances for the development of that art work, as well as the artist`s notion of alterity, of being someone else who also provides information - considering that he accomplishes a clandestine graphic design.

Parte, em seguida, para uma análise interna das peças Pedro, o cru, Dinis e Isabel e D. João e a Máscara e detecta uma trajetória do sentimento metafísico do poeta na sucessão cronológica destas peças; esta trajetória apresenta como correlato uma modificação sensível no trabalho estilístico do autor, no que concerne ao uso das imagens da natureza. Pedro o cru é eleita como a "a visão patriciana por excelência", por ser uma proposta metafísica original e por ser a que melhor responde ao projeto da obra patriciana. É, portanto, em relação a ela que as contextualizações e a conclusão são feitas. Tendo em vista que uma obra literária nunca é autônoma em relação ao contexto sócio-cultural em que veio à luz, antes guardando com ele profundas e estreitas relações, fez-se necessário um confronto com o teatro simbolista que se produzia na época e com o Movimento Saudosista, encabeçado por Teixeira de Pascoais.

Antonio Gramsci é um autor que pensa a partir do ponto de vista das periferias e dos subalternos. Suas reflexões foram fundadas numa sociedade marcada por um desenvolvimento econômico desigual e combinado e tem, como tema central, a Revolução Socialista nas periferias. A hipótese que procuramos demonstrar nesse trabalho é a de que, ao longo das reflexões do revolucionário sardo, existe uma dialética entre centro e periferia, na qual esta última se faz centro sempre que ela expressa uma inovação revolucionária. However, the political writings were also consulted (1910-1926) and the letters of the author (1926-1930). The choice of edition is due to the fact that it represents, in an accessible way, the junction of the elements considered positive noted in previous editions. Phénomène discursif se manifestant au -delà de la langue, l'antonymie nous apparaît comme une relation sémantico-discursive entre deux items entre lesquels s'installe un rapport de contradiction sémantico-argumentative. Reflet des oppositions en langue et en discours, l'antonymie est le fruit de certains mécanismes déclenchés par des opérateurs sémantico-pragmatiques subordonnés à l'opérateur de négation. An niveau du discours ces mécanismes suivent le plus souvent un parcours ternaire supposant l'effacement d'une première contradiction existante à priori dans la langue et la phrasique, l'antonymie discursive se donne pour but de refaire le binarisme de la langue, mais d'après des critères fonctionnels dans le discours (l'activité discursive des instances interlocutives, l'exploitation de niveau contextuel et de la composante encyclopédique, la valorisation du niveau suprasegmental). De cette manière, l'antonymie se transforme d'une relation statique, isolée dans la composante pré-phrasique et phrastique, dans une relation dynamique, essentiellement redevable au contexte de productionDiscursive Phenomenon going beyond language, antonymy appears to us like a semantic and discursive relation between two items among which a relationship of semantic and argumentative contradiction is settled. Reflecting oppositions in language and discourse, antonymy originates from certains mechanisms released by semantic and -pragmatic operators subordinate to the negation of operator. At discourse level thes mechanisms follow more often a ternary course implying the deletion of a first contradiction existing a priori in the language and the creation of a new opposition tolerated by the discourse. Trans-lexical and trans-phrasal, discursive antonymy aims at re-creating language binary form, but after functional criteria in discourse (i. E. Discursive activity of interlocutive instances, exploitation at contextual level and of encyclopaedic element, development of suprasegmental level). Thus antonymy turns from a static relation, isolated in pre-phrasal and phrasal element, into a dynamic relation, essentially due to production context

The term "Psychological ballet" has been used in reference to Antony Tudor's ballets dating from John Martin's January 16, 1940, review of "Lilac Garden" in The New York Times. Until this thesis, the psychological ballet as a genre has been overlooked and left undefined. The Psychological Ballet can be defined by: (1) using Antony Tudor's "Pillar of Fire" as a model example and (2) analyzing the term "psychological ballet" into its two components "Psychological," and "Ballet," respectively. The contribution of drama, with attention to character, is explored. Those dance works which do not fall under the category of Psychological Ballet but are works whose themes "have mental origin or are affected by mental conflicts and/or states" will be defined as Psychogenic Works.
