An amalgam of circumstances and phenomena, including intergenerational dissonance and the outright rebelliousness of many young people, the “youth question” of the 1960s and 1970s was a complex substantiation of a generation gap with period-specific ideational and behavioral qualities and transnational manifestations. In Chile, the period saw student movements, outbreaks of street violence, and widely shared consternation about perils threatening the nation’s social and cultural footings, with the era’s main combatants instrumentalizing the youth question to admonish rivals. This chapter situates the Chilean case in a transnational context marked by the political strife and youthful activism—especially that of 1968— to provide substrate for the book’s examination of Chile’s counterculture and reactions to it.

Creative tourism has been a proficuous ground for the implementation of ICT's (Information and Communications Technology) strategies and the so-called creative industries. New cultural mediators are changing tourism consumption. Postmodern consumers have brought new perceptions to cocreation processes through user-generated content, eWOM (Electronic Word of Mouth), peer-to-peer exchange, collaborative economy, SoLoMo (social-local-mobile) tourists, among others. Booktubers and music fans/consumers in Chile constitute examples of diverse consumption through virtual and physical mediation, as capital construction enables social practices. In this exploratory study, the authors discuss how creative experiences are being consumed through cultural mediation made possible by technological developments. The creative tourism network website is analysed in the light of postmodern cultural mediation and capital construction.

The chapter shows the situation of education for democratic citizenship in Latin America and its evolution over the last 25 years, taking as an example three countries: Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. First, the concept of citizenship in curricula is analyzed. Its role in the political and social re-democratization and its limitations are proposed as a result of a national identity concept that limits cultural, social, and political diversity. Their strengths and weaknesses are compared, considering issues like human rights, citizenship responsibilities, citizen participation, community boundaries, levels of identity, and cultural diversity. Second, the purposes of their teaching are interpreted in the curricula. It presents a curriculum focused on relevant social problems and on the formation of critical thinking and social participation and citizenship awareness. Finally, it reflects on the results of the international study on civic and citizen education in Latin America, pointing out its contradictions and the need to continue deepening in research and in teaching practice and training.

En la última década ha venido en aumento los pacientes crónicos que requieren Cuidado Paliativo, se hace indispensable tener conocimientos, habilidades, formación integral y competitiva en el profesional de enfermería para afrontar de manera responsable, asesorando y apoyando, con un trato más humanizado y que sea sensible ante las necesidades del usuario en este proceso de cronicidad. La enseñanza no es óptima cuando el egresado se enfrenta a su vida profesional generando inseguridad en su labor asistencial. Por esta razón, surge la necesidad de incluir en el pregrado conocimientos en los estudiantes de enfermería en cuidados paliativos con el fin de resaltar la importancia de incluir esta temática durante la formación académica. Hay que destacar el papel formativo de la universidad con respecto al cuidado paliativo, por lo que se requiere que la formación contribuya al desarrollo de competencias clínicas en la que los cuidados sean sensibles a las necesidades culturales del paciente y su familia. El arte del cuidado requiere ser enseñado de manera teórica y práctica en la formación académica, de manera que se construya una filosofía personal y profesional que le permita otorgar cuidado humanístico social, cultural, espiritual y moral.

This chapter is a collective work that presents the different meanings of energy poverty in Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, and Brazil. In each country, difficulties in access to energy, payment of the costs, vulnerable users, quality, and the main legal challenges facing the search for true energy justice are analysed. In South America, the definition of energy poverty takes into account complex factors recognizing not only weather and geographical differences in the region but also the variety of cultural, economic, and social perceptions over energy needs and consumption. This chapter examines the reception of the political and social thought of Giuseppe Mazzini in the River Plate (Buenos Aires and Montevideo) and Chile, and its contribution to the development of native currents of liberal and democratic nationalism there. Focusing on the writings of the leaders of the Association of the Young Argentinian Generation – Juan Bautista Alberdi, Esteban Echeverría, Bartolomé Mitre, and Vicente Fidel López – it analyses the forms in which certain key concepts drawn from Mazzini's political vocabulary played a crucial role in the early elaboration of an Argentinian liberal nationalism. The chapter also stresses the importance of cultural intermediaries such as Giovanbattista Cuneo and Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose presence in the River Plate during the 1830s and 1840s was of decisive importance in the transmission of the programme formulated by Mazzini for his Giovine Italia movement. The chapter also explores the possible presence of Mazzinian themes and rhetorical patterns in the writings of the Chilean radical republican Francisco Bilbao, whose career as a publicist took place in three Latin American countries: Chile, Peru, and Argentina.

Abstract:
The chapter shows the situation of education for democratic citizenship in Latin America and its evolution over the last 25 years, taking as an example three countries: Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. First, the concept of citizenship in curricula is analyzed. Its role in the political and social re-democratization and its limitations are proposed as a result of a national identity concept that limits cultural, social, and political diversity. Their strengths and weaknesses are compared, considering issues like human rights, citizenship responsibilities, citizen participation, community boundaries, levels of identity, and cultural diversity. Second, the purposes of their teaching are interpreted in the curricula. It presents a curriculum focused on relevant social problems and on the formation of critical thinking and social participation and citizenship awareness. Finally, it reflects on the results of the international study on civic and citizen education in Latin America, pointing out its contradictions and the need to continue deepening in research and in teaching practice and training.
