Abstract:
Most researchers assume litter decomposition to take place at the site where litterfall occurs, mostly by soil micro-organisms and microfauna of less than 1 mm in size. Accordingly, the litterbag method has become the standard technique for evaluating litter decomposition rates (Schlesinger 1985, Wedderburn & Carter 1999). However, there is evidence indicating that at least in tropical arid ecosystems litter can be removed from the site in substantial amounts by animals, including large vertebrates. For example, litter is removed for forage or as building material for nests by ants (partic

Ants are important agents of seed dispersal and they can play a fundamental role in the establishment and survival of plants (Beattie 1985). Leaf-cutting or fungus-growing ants (Myrmicinae: Attini) are dominant elements of the ant fauna throughout the neotropics. They collect different types of vegetative and reproductive plant material that serve as substrate for underground fungus gardens, which are the only food source for their larvae (Stradling 1991).

Biodiversitas 19: 831-839. Deforestation and overgrazing mediated by the humans have caused a serious process of desertification in the Argentine Monte Desert, which threats biodiversity of this ecosystem. Forests provide important resources and refuge for animal species, such as ants. The objective of this work was to survey the ant fauna of dryland forests of Ischigualasto Provincial Park, a protected are

Fungi associated with leaf-cutter ants (LCAs) play a fundamental role in Neotropical ecosystems. The association with fungi allows LCAs to be the dominant herbivores and in this way influence ecological processes. In order to know the taxonomic diversity of fungal symbionts associated with LCAs, ten sampling sites were selected corresponding to the Chaqueño Serrano district and the Algarrobo district. Samples of fungi grown by leaf cutter ants were collected, a part of the fungal material was grown in potato agar culture medium with dextrose and another was stored in a CTAB buffer. Subsequentl

One of the bases for the mobilization of indigenous peoples in Argentina in recent years has been access to, use of, and ownership of the natural resources contained in the territory they occupy or claim. Political mobilization among the Qom of Potae Napocna Navogoh in the central Chaco is a response to the modalities of intervention for development and territory configurations involved in capital accumulation that have threatened the possibility of their reproduction, and it involves conflict with both private capital and the state for territory rather than for land. Abstract. The incorporation of indigenous territories into the Argentine Republic must be considered as a complex process of colonization which encompassed space, the word and the body. It enabled the dominant settler society to establish socioeconomic and sociocultural hegemony. The example of the Toba community in Clorinda elucidates the extent to which hegemonic worldviews have infiltrated their self-perception and produced the barrio (urban district) and the campo (rural area), as two places infiltrated with symbolisms and ideology.
