This master’s thesis deals globally with the taste for the unpleasant experience. Specifically, it discusses the experiences of noise music in concert, through its reception among listeners in Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. To address this phenomenon, this work observes the expectations and evaluations of aesthetic experience, as well as the facilitating factors. The analysis made to interact different theories and concepts that help all to understand the complexity of the experience of noise music concert, both in the affective, the evaluative, the identity than the social levels. Consequently, behaviors and discourses are central to the understanding of this phenomenon. We will see in this way the special relationship that the spectator carries with this music's object, and how this relation facilitates the experience and ultimately helps its appreciation.

Collective portrait of Belgian bankers Brussels-Liège-Antwerp (1830-1935).
Contribution to a history of élite (2 volumes).
This research, which is divided in three parts, aims to give for the first time a quite exhaustive “prosopographic” vision of a group of entrepreneurs in post 1830 independent Belgium. The first part is twofold: it defines the principal criteria of selection of the 382 strong sample of bankers, then aims to synthesize from a quantitative point of view the distinctive features of the elite under study. The second part, which relies on both quantitative and qualitative approaches, offers fresh thinking tracks as to the networks set up by Belgian bankers and the benefits thereof from a relational perspective. The final part aims, quite concisely, to set the contributions of this research back in their original economic context, thus bridging the gap between economic and social history, both equally useful to outline the features of the bankers under consideration.

Full textThis dissertation is intended to treat, in a plural and critical way, the complex issue of the foundations of human rights and fundamental rights. The debate is not new, since walk down the tortuous roads of the universality of rights and cultural relativism transport us back to the very origin - and genealogy of those rights. However, in the contemporary global scenario, this subject arises with strength. This is because for the theory of human rights and fundamental rights has been particularly difficult to deal with the world that emerges from the clash of civilizations, which marks the beginning of the new millennium. The structures and categories, in theory, and in a practical level, were designed in the light of the dichotomy us/them. In this multicultural scene, raise the challenge of targeting human rights and fundamental rights as a policy both global and cultural, as theoretical artifacts of possible universality, which instead of being hegemonic instruments, are open and influenced by cultural reality. To fulfill this mission, it is important the analysis of the emergence of both the history and evolution of the universalism and relativist matrix in legal discourse. Also important is to mirror this debate by international decisions, which have been confronted by such demands. Currently, there are several possible, though contradictory, answers to the demand. The challenge, that the work will explore, is think its limits and possibilities beyond a single answer

Full textWhile the parable of the Prodigal Son was a support in the deep religious controversies which affected Antwerp during the 16th century, the artistic productions (paintings, prints and drawings) gave back a more consensual image of this history. Instead of representing the numerous contradictory theological exegeses about the message of Christ, the artists preferred to drawn their inspiration from profane culture (as plays) and to emphasize the scene of the waste with the courtesans or to insist on everyday and coarse details. This thesis studies the numerous reasons which led them to such choices (weight of censorship, search for a vast clientele, flattery of the spectator…) and analyses the choices of setting, episode by episode. It demonstrates how artist studios reproduced repetitive formulae and how the iconographic choices facilitated alternately the spiritual meditation, the visual enjoyment or the condescending thoughts to others

Full textThis PhD – thesis is an empirical study of the informal network of the Antwerp port community. It aims to identify analytical categories for the description of its actors and its action modes. In the framework of this thesis three categories are identified by means of interviews with the members of the community. Finally the thesis analyses how these categories destabilise the normative order of the Nation-State. The informal network of the Antwerp port community relies on the category of the divergent interest group. This category destabilises the normative order of the Nation-State because of the incomplete separation of the public and the private domain. Secundo, the informal network of the Antwerp port community relies on the category of the permanent negociation. This category destabilises the normative order of the Nation-State because of the elaboration of territorial interests taking precedence over the individual interests. This corresponds to a reterritorialisation of interests. Thirdly, the informal network of the Antwerp port community relies on the category of the principle of inclusion and exclusion. This category destabilises the normative order of the Nation-State because of the informal networking of the normatives institutions with private companies

Full textThe systematic revision of members of the long-snouted dolphin family Eurhinodelphinidae leads to the description/re-description of five species in the genera Eurhinodelphis (E. cocheteuxi and E. longirostris), Schizodelphis (S. morckhoviensis), and Xiphiacetus n. gen. (X. cristatus and X. bossi). Furthermore, the systematic status of several eurhinodelphinid species from other localities in the world is revised. A cladistic analysis with the parsimony criterion is undertaken to highlight the phylogenetic relationships of several eurhinodelphinid taxa with other fossil and extant odontocetes. Eurhinodelphinids are more closely related to the beaked whales; the latter are distinctly separated from the sperm whales. A second analysis, with a likelihood criterion, reaches nearly identical results. Then a separate parsimony analysis investigates the relationships within the family Eurhinodelphinidae; the results suggest sister-group relationships between Schizodelphis + Xiphiacetus and Ziphiodelphis + (Mycteriacetus + Argyrocetus) and a more stemward position for Eurhinodelphis. After that, anatomical, palaeogeographic, and phylogenetic data allow several suggestions about the ecological features of the eurhinodelphinids. The extinction of this family, before the end of the Miocene, is commented, related to the changes in the biodiversity of other odontocete groups and to a contemporary major sea level drop.

Pouillard, Violette.
Following in the footsteps of recent developments in the French historiography, this dissertation aims at balancing the attention given to humans and animals. The research therefore focuses on human policies concerning the management of animals kept in zoological gardens, as well as on their consequences on the bodies and behaviors of animals, and on mutual influences between humans and animals.
The study begins with the birth of the zoological garden, i.e. the creation of the Jardin des Plantes Menagerie in 1793, and focuses on this institution as well as on the London Zoo, created in 1828, and the Antwerp Zoo (1843).
In order to write the history of zoo animals, the method uses both descriptive indicators – testimonies on animals bodies and behaviors, on captive environments, on animal cares, handling and food, – and quantitative indicators – long-term study of the arrivals and departures, births and deaths of animals and of the longevity of Primates and Pantherinae in captivity. The evolution of these indicators takes place in a chronological framework based on the policies designed to manage zoo animals. The first part begins with the foundation of the zoological gardens. The second one starts at the beginning of the 20th century, when German dealer Carl Hagenbeck opened a zoo in Stellingen, near Hamburg (1907) which popularized a new way to display the animals, in open-air enclosures separated from the public by ditches. The third part starts in the 1950’s, when zoos implemented a new function, one of ex situ conservation, in addition to their other traditional recreative, educative and scientific missions.
This study of animal lives under human influence results in a new chronology of zoological gardens, discerning a long 19th century, that consumed animal lives, a second phase, hygienist, from the interwar period, marked by the managers’ willingness to rationalize the conditions of captivity, without much influence on animals lives and longevity, and a third one, from the mid-1970’s to the present time, characterized by increased attention to zoo animals and their well-being, allowing the birth of a new animal economy of zoological gardens, by which in situ captures decline for most taxa (specifically mammals and birds).
The dissertation also shows, in opposition with the finalist discourses of the official historiography, somes continuities, immanent to animal captivity in the context of zoological gardens. Abnormal behaviors in animals especially appear in proportions exceeding the anecdotal level. Another important phenomenon pointing to continuities is the collecting in the wild which, although it declined at the same rhythm that the new animal economy developed, has persisted to this day, profusely for the least considered taxa (fishes and invertebrates), and resurfacing in new iterations for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians (capture for purposes of conservation, for scientific collecting, ).

Full textThis thesis examines the changes in police organizations and their implications for the practices of actors maintaining public order in cities of Belgian territories from the end of the Ancien Régime to the end of the first Empire. More broadly it questions the relationships between administrative modernization and construction of the State, and concentrates on the interrelationships between elements inherited from pre-existent structures with those introduced at the moment of revolutionary conquests. The approach suggested is that of a history of the Napoleonic police “from the bottom up”, one anchored in traces of its predecessors from the Ancien Régime. Rich in discoveries, it lays emphasis on what are slow but profound changes in city police organizations. The analysis, first of all, concentrates on changes in urban police systems in the last decade of the Ancien Régime, at the moment when the Austrian Netherlands and the principality of Liège were marked by reform policies and strong revolutionary tensions. Subsequently, transformations in structures and practices occurring during the occupations of Belgian territories from 1792 to 1795 and the disorders of the Directory period are approached. That section allows us to shed light on the urban police forces under the Directory, something that has been so far largely ignored. The thesis then concentrates on the Consulate, principally on its bureaucratization of police administration. The following two chapters show continuities and changes in practices in the maintenance of public order during the 1780-1814 period. Finally, the last chapter seeks to evaluate how the State police force and the urban police forces got along, in collaboration or competition, during the last years of the Napoleonic Empire.Beyond transiting from a comprehensive type of police force to a police force considered more modern in being more oriented towards the security of people, this chronological itinerary sheds light on both the endogenous and exogenic transformations occurring in the city police apparatuses, well before the annexation of Belgian territories to the French Republic and the advent of the Bonapartist regime. Important continuities, as well as the dynamism and autonomy of the urban police regarding State centralization simultaneously nuance and make analysis of Napoleonic political construction more complex. This thesis also assesses the similarities between the episodes of disorders (1787-1795, 1809, 1813-1814) in surveillance practices and recourse to the army.At the end of the Napoleonic experiment, the municipal police forces bequeathed by the First Empire appear to be more the result of a syncretism between strictly local and original elements and others imported and digested by cities in Belgian space. The strong personality of certain individuals called upon to exercise policing functions, including in the field, may have had an important influence on the installation, the dissemination and the adoption of new practices. Consequently, police modernity – which is not necessarily synonymous with centralization – emerged, depending on the places, times and various objects. This can be seen above all through the synthesis which took place between local elements, the possible inheritance of structures from the Ancien Régime, and elements imported on the occasion of revolutionary and Napoleonic conquests

Full textPort and maritime activity are currently undergoing an important reorganisation. This phenomenon goes hand in hand with prominent evolutions triggering a renewal of port cities governance. Among the Northern Range, three major cities – namely Antwerp, Le Havre and Rotterdam – have been experiencing the spreading of the strategic paradigm followed by a diversity of strategic projects. In order to answer the theoretical and operational issues induced by this renewed context, the research is structured around four axes among which the analysis of strategic planning instruments and its impact on spatial planning processes in port cities. Conceiving a methodology that allows explaining the complexity of port cities constitutes an important challenge. As such, it is the second axis explored. The link between strategic planning and territorial coherence forms the third axis. Finally, the opportunity of modelling strategic planning of port cities is the fourth axis. The research follows a cross-disciplinary approach coupled with a systemic analysis. On top of providing a specific methodology to analyse strategic planning and port cities complexity, the doctoral study contributes to a better understanding of spatial planning processes and their current redefinition. It also produces an evaluation of the way territorial coherence is integrated to spatial planning policies in port cities. Last but not least, the research presents a theoretical formalisation of strategic processes leading to an original typology of the three strategic planning models identified in Antwerp, Le Havre and Rotterdam

Full textThis PhD thesis studies the hospitals in the cities of the Duchy of Brabant, from their emergence in the early 12th century until the 15th century. The emphasis lies mostly on the analysis of the economic, political and social context from which they rise and where they thrive. Through the thesis, the main actors of the hospital's life are identified and their motives scrutinised. The hospital appears to be indeed a very convenient tool, to use according various economic, political or social purposes.

Full textThe authors of the French League appear to be of poor interest, and are quickly rejected as fanatics of weak thought. Our judgement on them has barely evolved since Michelet. The current work consisted in extracting the biggest Ligueur book, issued in Paris in 1590, from its latin language, footnoting it and analysing its reasoning. The outcome is a discourse of religious hatred. The discourse is analysed in its structure, and then chronologically rebuilt following the literary and scriptural references. The emerging discourse is a universal history which also is a history of progress of sacerdotal power. This power is seen by the author as a discriminating and excluding power, and the bible itself is read as an exclusion manual. This type of analysis is new in the bibliography of religious wars, for the studies in religious hatred have thus far focused on collective violence and its manifestations. An investigation is conducted on the author of this anonymous document. The current attribution to William Reynolds, English priest exiled on the continent, is proved to be entirely funded on the invention of a Huguenot author in the late XVIIth century. The archives of the English College in Rheims and those of the English Crown allow the identification of another English priest, William Gifford, sincere catholic but in the meantime an secret agent of the London government. An interesting character is depicted, the one of a professional of hatred at the intersection of several religious wars, those of France, England, Flanders

Full textThe research takes place in the French context which is full of discussions as port governance is concerned. Those debates concern the comparison between a supposed French “shape” and a supposed Hanseatic “shape”. The questioning deals with the identification of port territories in the Northern Range and the interactions between stakeholders coexisting into port places: private companies and port authorities. Main items that stand out from interviews with stakeholders, shown two main results to understand port governance: the nature of interactions between stakeholders and the terms of governance. Compared study between ports permit to say that social interactions established day by day are specifics to each port place and contribute to the construction of an own identity to each territory. A balanced governance is the result of constant compromises that leads to the creation of collective spaces formal and unformal to take decisions. The thesis is focused on institutional and relational mechanisms. Thus, governance is a set of mechanisms which lead to the result of goodwill between stakeholders and permit the balance into the decision taking concerning public affairs. In order to develop our purpose, the study of governance permits to question the exercise of power in port places. The thesis clearly ask the following question: who truly govern port places of the Northern Range?

Samouelian, Esther. Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01H035.
Full textThe thesis questions the place of religious pictures in the new metapictural genre of gallery paintings invented by Frans Francken II in Antwerp at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Antwerp gallery paintings have been considered so far as reflecting collecting practices and the taste at that time. They have also been understood as the expression of the ideas of the CounterReformation and, to a lesser extent, the humanistic culture in the Low Countries. This global sociocultural approach does not grasp the diversity and specificity of gallery paintings, the aim of these paintings is definitely another one. Looking like an image of a collection this combination of paintings and diverse objects leads to the construction of a discourse dedicated to an ethical or epistemological theme. Various links can be observed in gallery paintings between the reproduced pictures and even between the pictures and the objects, links which bring forth a strong internal coherence, hidden under apparent disorder. Relationships based on analogy or antithesis are established between the works of art which the beholder is invited to find out. Newly identified works confirm the presence of a theme which coordinates a gallery painting as a whole. My study is devoted to the gallery paintings by Frans Francken II and his brother Hieronymus, further those by Cornelis De Baellieur. All these gallery paintings contain existent paintings and follow the principle of organization according to a theme. My study also puts the question of internal coherence concerning the famous compositions by Willem van Haecht and tries to give a first answer to it
