We have used metrics (mean lead time for tornadoes warned in advance, fraction of tornadoes warned in advance) that work in a consistent way across the official changes in policy for warning issuance, as well as across points in time when unofficial changes took place. Full text
Abstract:
AbstractIn the early Holocene period, extensive tracts of coastal land were submerged as the climate warmed and meltwaters flooded into the oceans. As the Irish Sea expanded, coastlines altered and large intertidal zones were created as tracts of low-lying land at the tidal margins were gradually submerged. In these areas, reed swamp and saltmarsh formed which, too, were inundated for varying periods of time. However, in the calmer warmer weather of the late spring and summer, birds and mammals were drawn on to the mudflats where they could feed on molluscs, or new reed and sedge shoots, wallow in the cooling mud, drink the brackish water or, for some predators, hunt. The behavioural tendencies of some species are revealed by their footprints which show their engagement within this environment – some breeds moved on to the marshes while others moved away. The humans who shared this landscape understood the opportunities offered by these predictable behaviours. Their trails run along and across those left by many species, leaving a visible network of human and animal activity preserved in the hardened mud. These will be described through an examination of the footprints recorded in three contexts which formed the stratigraphy of a Mesolithic bed at Formby Point in North West England. The persistent return to the mudflats by generations of people reflects an embodied knowledge of this coastal landscape, learnt in childhood and practiced in adulthood. The ability to modify movements in the landscape, to respond to the daily tides, the changing seasons and a fluctuating environment, all suggest a spatial-temporal relationship which not only encompassed a dynamic environment but also the other life that dwelt within it.

Abstract:
A portal is defined as an entrance point to online content. The portal concept has evolved across a number of markets and applications. Customer portals focus on individual customer and offer a one-stop Internet access. By providing a number of services, such as searches, shopping, e-mail, and games, portals allow individuals to avoid browsing the Web but to in-fact rely and stay at one Web site like a one-stop shop. Accordingly, portals drive eyeballs, and hence create and drive advertising revenue and alliances. The concept of a single public port to given content on the Internet is used as a means of pulling in a large number of users. As an example, America Online (AOL) acts as a portal site to general Web content. It is a specialized portal created by AOL and also has content from partners such as Time Warner (Kleindl, 2003). This article reviews the role of portals in consumer search behavior and certain aspects in marketing.

Abstract:
The convergence of entertainment and communications media in broadband World Wide Web delivery channels promises to provide modern consumers with a wealth of information and data utilities in the home. Best evidenced by the impending synthesis of media content and media delivery in the form of the AOL/Time Warner merger, this developing innovation of a single-channel rich content information utility in the household suggests the need for understanding the complex and diverse motivations attendent to the adoption of new media and new technology merged into a single commercial entity. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the well-understood technology adoption precepts of the technology acceptance model (cf., Davis, 1989; Venkatesh & Davis, 1996; 2000) in concert with the media-use motivation theories arising from adaptation of the uses and Gratifications (U&G) perspective, with particular emphasis on the emerging effects of social gratifications for Internet use.

Abstract:
Dial M for Murder, the fourth and final film owed to Warner Bros. under Hitchcock’s Transatlantic contract, was based on Frederick Knott’s successful stage play. Hitchcock filmed the play almost exactly as written, making no attempt to ‘open up’ its apartment setting and embellishing the tightly knit plot with a spellbinding murder scene. The Production Code Administration found little to quibble with, asking that a few hells and damns be omitted and that the ‘intimate parts’ of Grace Kelly’s body ‘be fully clothed at all times.’ The film was a success both critically and at the box office, bringing in the most profit of any of the Warner’s films.

Abstract:
It Was a cold evening in early December 2006, and Tracy Warner had just returned home from Willits Primary School. Ryan had just sung in the “Winter Wonderland” musical there. Christmas lights dotted F Street, adding some warmth to her modest block in the heart of Monmouth, Illinois. She looked like a new woman, and, judging by her smile, she knew it. The jeans and T-shirt—the uniform of the anxious, soon-to-be-unemployed line worker and picketer of a couple years earlier—had been replaced by a red V-neck sweater, silk blouse, and an aura of confidence. She was wrapping up four fall semester classes and a journalism internship at the school’s newspaper, the Western Courier. She had done this while raising Ryan and frantically looking for a job. She was set to graduate on the following Saturday from Western Illinois University. The dream Warner had dreamt a thousand times while piecing together refrigerator doors on the Maytag line for over fifteen years was coming true. “Look at this,” she said, handing me an essay. “It’s a paper on Rawls’ theory of justice. He said that we have to stand behind a veil of ignorance to make fair decisions.” Her reference fit the moment. John Rawls’ 1971 Theory of Justice poses a hypothetical world in which all societal roles are shuffled behind a metaphorical “veil of ignorance.” Behind this veil, one does not know to what role he or she will be assigned in the new social order. It is only from there, Rawls argues, can one truly judge the fairness of various social roles and relations. The CEO, for instance, would have to experience the lives of workers he put out of work. Warner still saw Ralph Hake as a great villain—and it was not just because of the factory closing and the gutting of her working life as well as the working lives of her friends and co-workers. Warner had embraced the changes as best she could, and she and Ryan would find a way to survive.

Abstract:
Here we have an introduction to a book which Zawahiri published initially in 2004 on the topic of martyrdom and martyrdom operations (i.e. suicide attacks) in particular. Written initially in the aftermath of the 9/11 suicide-hijackings, Zawahiri began his first edition with references to the asymmetric qualities of martyrdom operations, that rendered the material prowess of the West—acquired through treachery—meaningless. He condemned those who spoke against that tactic, warning against the consequences such criticism would have for the Muslim nation. Nine years later, Zawahiri’s second edition of his book comes at a time when martyrdom operations and the excessive casualties they inflict had become something of a liability. In this edition, therefore, Zawahiri warns against ‘deviation’ and ‘exaggeration’ in the application of the tactic, arguing that some have not respected the parameters defined by proper reading of scripture. The two introductions, therefore, shed interesting light on ongoing debates about the boundaries of legitimate and sustainable militancy from the perspective of public opinion, which is a recurring theme in this discourse.

PD meter consists of a fixed volume rotating chamber. For each turn a pulse is counted, hence, the measured volume is the number of pulses times the volume of the chamber. Abstract:
This paper presents updated distributions of the temperatures, salinities and borehole strengths of old ice, as a function of time of year. Thousands of measurements are compiled from old ice floes across the Arctic. Probability of exceedance curves are used to show the more ‘extreme’ values that can occur at various depths in the ice, whereas properties over the full ice thickness are obtained from (i) the means of populations and (ii) by depth-averaging measurements from the same borehole. Ice temperature and borehole strength show strong seasonal variability (temperature and borehole streng

During the Neolithic period, several ceramic traditions were developed on the territory of the middle Volga forest: unornamented, pin-pointed, combed, and pit-combed. The problem of their chronological correlation is very relevant at this stage of study. Currently, 29 radiocarbon dates have been obtained from Neolithic materials from 10 sites in the region. The presented work is devoted to their analysis. The Neolithization of the Mari Volga region is associated with the emergence of carriers of the tradition of making unornamented ware at the turn of the 7th-6th millennium BC. Starting from t

Abstract:
This paper describes some experiences about impact of unsteadiness in turbine flows, with a special focus on the effects of potential interaction on aerodynamic performance. The main motivation consists in trying to identify some design areas in which some further margins of improvement could be found, provided the designer chooses the proper computational framework. The underlying idea is that the approximations associated with the steady-state picture of a turbine stage might prevent the designer from unlocking the full potential of the stage, especially when the design requirements imply a

Abstract:
Birds are prominent features of National Park Service lands and are effective indicators for monitoring ecosystem health. Assessing the temporal change of avian species abundance depends on long-term monitoring of bird communities and trends, however long-term monitoring programs are generally uncommon. In this report, we summarize 22 years (1997-2018) of point count data across five sites on West Virginia National Park Service lands (three in New River Gorge National River, one in Gauley River National Recreation Area, and one in Bluestone National Scenic River) and compare these results to o

The 6 th Assessment Report cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (AR6) comes at a precipitous moment in history. Human influence has warmed the planet, and widespread and rapid impacts are occurring to natural and human systems in all regions of the world. In response, immediate action is needed if there is to be any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5°C or well below 2°C below pre-industrial levels, as well as preparing for and adapting to current and future risks. The transformations needed in response to climate change will require decisive action in cities and urban are

Abstract:
Ice-wedge polygons are a striking and widespread feature of the arctic landscape. Ice wedges are vulnerable to thaw because they are nearly pure ice bodies near the surface, with little insulating overlying material. Ice-wedge polygon monitoring is a part of the permafrost monitoring program for the National Park Services Arctic Inventory and Monitoring Network (ARCN, the five National Park units in northern Alaska). The present report is a re-analysis of ice-wedge condition in three study areas, based on satellite images taken in 2019 and 2020 (sampling episode 3). Results are compared to pre

The fifth annual Global Health 50/50 report, Boards for all?, presents our first-ever analysis of the gender and geography of who governs global health. Through an examination of the demographics of over 2,000 board members of the most influential organisations active in global health, the report warns that global health is not living up to its name. The report further presents its annual review of the equality- and gender-related policies and practices of 200 global organisations. Building on five years of evidence, it finds signs of rapid progress in building more equitable and gender-respon
