Abstract:
In establishing better interconnectedness between different branches of medicine, new advancements can be made. Instead of focusing on the affected region of a body, it can be helpful to look at a bigger picture and explore the links to other body parts. For example, there are links between dentistry and general medicine but yet there remains a separation between the two. There is a growing awareness of how oral health can impact on the rest of the body, such as links between periodontal disease and cardiovascular diseases, and this is the context of Associate Professor Norio Aoyama's work. He is based at Kanagawa Dental University, Japan, where he is exploring the links between the cardiovascular system and the oral environment. He hopes that his work can enhance awareness of the relationship between medical care and dentistry. Periodontal disease can lead to chronic infection and eventual loss of teeth. One hallmark of this chronic infection is the related chronic immune response with inflammation and Aoyama believes the link between periodontal and cardiovascular disease is due to this chronic element. Aoyama and his team try demonstrating a causal link between the two diseases by recruiting patients to create control and test groups. The patients in the main test group, with periodontal disease but no cardiovascular risk factors, might have their vascular endothelial dysfunction examined using reactive hyperaemia peripheral arterial tonometry.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is a character analysis of Conan Edogawa – the protagonist of Meitantei Conan by Gōshō Aoyama – as a variation of the superhero. The research material includes manga, animated series adaptation and related cinematic films. The broadly understood criminal novel (mostly the Sherlock Holmes cycle by Arthur Conan Doyle) was the source of inspiration for the Japanese artist. The analysis of the collected material demonstrates that the described franchise used a transmedia narration. Both Aoyama and the authors of animated adaptations use transfictionality in their works. With the combined usage of the criminal and superhero elements, the Japanese artist created an omnipotent and omniscient superhero detective who can solve any mystery.

Abstract:
This study examines the application of an IRT analysis of words on lists including the General Service List (GSL), New General Service List (NGSL), Academic Word List (AWL), New Academic Word List (NAWL), and TOEIC Service List (TSL). By comparing line graphs, density distribution graphs, and boxplots for the average difficulty of each word list to related lists, we can get a visualization of the data’s distribution. Japanese EFL students responded to one or more of 84 Yes/No test forms compiled from 5,880 unique real words and 2,520 nonwords. The real words were analyzed using Winsteps (Linacre, 2005) resulting in IRT estimates for each word. By summing the difficulties of each word, we can calculate the average difficulty of each word list which can then be used to rank the lists. In effect, the process supports the concurrent validity of the lists. The analysis indicates the word family approach results in more difficult word lists. The mean difficulties of the GSL and the BNC_COCA appear to be more divergent and more difficult particularly over the first 4000 words, possibly due to the use of Bauer and Nation’s (1993) Affix Level 6 definition for their compilation. Finally, just as we should expect word lists for beginners to have higher frequency words than subsequent lists, we should also expect them to be easier with more words known to learners. This can be seen with the gradual but marked difference between the different word lists of the NGSL and its supplemental SPs.

Abstract:
Abstract. We analyzed the spatiotemporal variations in the 137Cs activity concentrations in global ocean surface seawater from 1956 to 2021 using the HAMGlobal2021 (Historical Artificial radioactivity database in Marine environment, Global integrated version 2021) and other published data. The global ocean was divided into 37 boxes. When observing the 0.5-year median value of 137Cs in each box in the Pacific Ocean, we noticed that the values gradually increased or had almost constant levels in the 1950s and 1960s, and then decreased exponentially in 1970–2010, immediately before the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Station (F1NPS) accident. In the northern North Atlantic Ocean and its marginal sea, the 0.5-year median values of 137Cs showed large variations in the directly discharged 137Cs from the reprocessing plants. The 137Cs inventory in the surface mixed layer in 1970, when 137Cs was released into the surface seawater, was estimated to be 184±26 PBq. In 1975 and 1980, the 137Cs inventory increased to 201±27 and 214±11 PBq, respectively, due to direct discharge from the Sellafield and La Hague nuclear fuel reprocessing plants. In 2011, the 137Cs inventory in the global ocean mixed layer increased to 50.7±7.3 PBq compared to that before the F1NPS accident, in which the contribution from the accident was estimated to be approximately 15.5±3.9 PBq. Mass balance analysis indicates that 137Cs deposited by the global fallout in the western North Pacific Ocean moved to the eastern North Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, 137Cs was transported southwards, followed by westward transport in the subtropical and equatorial Pacific Ocean, and then inflowed into the Indian Ocean via the Indonesian Archipelago. The longer apparent half-residence times in the Indonesian Archipelago (36.7 years from 1973 to 1997) and central Atlantic Ocean (38.0 years from 1992 to 2016) also support the interpretation of the global-scale transport of 137Cs from the western North Pacific Ocean to the Indian (20–30 years) and Atlantic oceans (30–40 years). In the northern North Atlantic Ocean and its marginal sea, 137Cs discharged from nuclear reprocessing plants is transported to the North Sea, Barents Sea and coast of Norway, and Arctic Ocean on a decadal scale. We derive a simple calculation rule for Aoyama-Tamra’s prescription for path integral with degenerated potential minima. Nonperturbative corrections due to the restricted functional space (fundamental region) can systematically be computed with this rule. It becomes manifest that the prescription might give Borel summable series for finite temperature (or volume) system with quantum tunneling, while the advantage is lost at zero temperature (or infinite volume) limit.

Abstract:
We have repeated classic dorsoventral somite rotation experiments (Aoyama and Asamoto, 1988, Development 104, 15–28) and included dorsal and ventral gene expression markers for the somitogenic tissue types, myotome and sclerotome, respectively. While the histological results are consistent with those previously published, gene expression analysis indicates that cells previously thought to be ‘sclerotome’ no longer express Pax1 mRNA, a sclerotome marker. These results, together with recent quail-chick transplantation experiments indicating that even very late sclerotome tissue fragments are multipotential (Dockter and Ordahl, 1998, Development 125, 2113–2124), lead to the conclusion that sclerotome tissue remains phenotypically and morphogenetically plastic during early embryonic somitogenesis. Myotome precursor cells, by contrast, appear to be determined within hours after somite epithelization; a finding consistent with recent reports (Williams and Ordahl, 1997, Development 124, 4983–4997). Therefore, while these findings support a central conclusion of Aoyama and Asamoto, that axis determination begins to occur within hours after somite epithelialization, the identity of the responding tissues, myotome versus sclerotome, differs. A simple model proposed to reconcile these observations supports the general hypothesis that determinative aspects of early paraxial mesoderm growth and morphogenesis occur in early and late phases that are governed principally by the myotome and sclerotome, respectively.

Abstract:
Ageing societies are more and more common across the world, placing growing emphasis on elderly care. Although elderly care has been implemented, these systems were developed prior to the growth in ageing societies and, in addition, life expectancies have since increased which means that elderly people require care for longer. It is not enough to focus on the ease of provision of care and extending life, elderly care must also focus on improving health and wellbeing and elevating quality of life. These standards of care will also be applicable to disabled people and help create healthier societies. Professor Yoshihiro Yamashina and Hiroki Aoyama, Aino University, Japan, are introducing more effective, low impact exercises in order to improve elderly care, with a specific focus on enhancing respiratory muscle strength. This could help reduce the risk of diseases such as atelectasis and pneumonia and is important because pneumonia is a common cause of suffering and death in the elderly population. For those who are unable to undertake high impact sport, such as the elderly and people with injuries or chronic pain, aquatic exercises are effective. Yamashina and Aoyama are working to better understand how water can be used to strengthen the respiratory muscles.

Abstract:
Z-100 is an extract of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain Aoyama B, which contains various polysaccharides. Aoyama B has previously been shown to induce a T helper 1-type cytokine response in various murine oncological models and has also demonstrated inhibitory activity against HIV-1 in vitro. This multicentre study primarily determined the safety of Z-100 in early HIV-1-infected patients who were treatment naive; were treatment experienced, but had elected to discontinue highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) 8 weeks or longer before the study; or were stable on their first or second HAART regimen for at least 12 weeks before the study. Thirty-two individuals participated in this study and self-injected either placebo, 20 μg or 40 μg Z-100 twice a week for 8 weeks. Z-100 was well tolerated and the safety profiles of the Z-100 treatment groups were not meaningfully different compared with the placebo group. Plasma levels of HIV-1 RNA were not statistically significantly different in any treatment group at the end of the treatment period. There were no statistically significant differences among the treatment groups in the change from baseline to week 8 for any of the biological endpoints including plasma levels of HIV-1 RNA; CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell counts; levels of macrophage inflammatory protein 1; soluble tumour necrosis factor receptor 1; C-reactive protein; interleukin-6; and granulocyte colony stimulating factor. Consequently, this trial demonstrates the safety of Z-100 in HIV-1 infected patients without evidence of any activity at the doses administered.

Abstract:
The World Englishes (WE) paradigm, by challenging the traditional, monolithic native-speaker norm and advocating instead linguistic diversity and identity, reconceptualized the use and users of English in post-colonial and globalized societies. WE thus has direct implications for English language teaching; however, bridging theory and practice is a challenging task for teachers and scholars because of the changes and innovations that the paradigm requires. This article attempts to address the theory–practice divide and discusses how teachers can incorporate WE perspectives into the classroom in a way where WE-informed pedagogy strengthens existing teaching practice without requiring an overhaul of curriculum design. Shifting the focus from a pedagogical method to a pedagogical stance, this article suggests principles for practice of WE-informed pedagogy, including four points to consider when dealing with the diversity of English in the classroom.

Abstract:
Abstract Aoyama et al. provided scaling relations between hydrogen-line luminosities and the accretion luminosity for planetary-mass objects. These fits should be an improvement over blind extrapolations of stellar relations. The fits go up only to the n = 8 electron energy level, but higher-n Balmer lines have been observed in the near-UV with UVES. We extend the scaling relations to higher-n levels for the Balmer and other series by fitting the fit coefficients (a, b) themselves and extrapolating them. Within the assumption of an accretion shock as the source of line emission, these fits should be robust for accreting planetary-mass objects.

Abstract:
Abstract Building on various theoretical approaches to translation (Hickey 1998; Bassnett 2001), this article demonstrates the intersection between translation and parody (Aoyama and Wakabayashi 1999) by comparing two musical texts: Rachid Taha’s “Douce France” and Seu Jorge’s Portuguese translation of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?”. According to Linda Hutcheon’s (1985) view of parody as a form of repetition maintaining a critical distance, both texts are parodic. Each parody presents a very different attitude, which influences their ethos. Rachid Taha’s cover involves irony, which often marks parody (Hutcheon 1985), and thus a negative ethos: criticizing his new country for grievances against immigrants. Seu Jorge, however, pays tribute to the Bowie song he translates. These observations illustrate the close relationship between parody and translation.
