Abstract:
We can note three phases in the tradition of the readymade and appropriation since Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel of 1913. First, they include early enactments in which the readymade posed an onto- logical challenge to artworks through the equation of commodity and art object. Second, practices in which readymades were de- ployed semantically as lexical elements within a sculpture, paint- ing, installation or projection. In a third phase, which most directly encompasses the global, the appropriation of objects, images, and other forms of content challenges sovereignty over the cultural and economic value linked to things that emerge from particular cultural properties ranging from Aboriginal painting in Australia to the ap- propriation of Mao’s cult of personality in 1990s China. This essay considers the most recent phase of the readymade in terms of its century-long history.

Abstract:
The study represents the author’s interpretation of the concept by P. Sloterdijk. The spherological ap-proach allows us to expand the boundaries of hu-man understanding through the convergence of psychology, phenomenology and philosophical anthropology. The origins of spherology as an ele-ment of vital geometry could be found in Antique Philosophy and is further represented in culture reflecting the fundamental aspects of human exist-ence. P. Sloterdijk’s spherological concept allows us to explore the dimension of internal spatiality of a person reconstructing the concept of intimacy. Mi-crospherology and macrospherology are becoming modes of human existence, and spherological to-pology takes place as a space of intimacy solely. The phenomenon of sphere-formation is considered by P. Sloterdijk through the prism of extrapolation of the natural to the artificial. In fact, the need to recre-ate a comfortable protective space is a way of self-preservation, which is immanently inherent in a per-son. The process of sphere-formation is a recon-struction of the first spherological defense obtained from pre-personal dyadic experience. Since spher-ological spaces are constituted by subjects, the philosophical question about man within the framework of spherology is the decentralization of the individual and the recultivation of implicit dyadic connections. The spherological approach allows us to re-evaluate the formation of society history, the development of art and the morphology of human thinking.

Abstract:
Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common surgical presentation and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Gallstones and excessive alcohol consumption are the most frequent causes of AP. Aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of raised ALT (Alanine aminotransferase) in determining biliary etiology in patients presenting with acute pancreatitis.Materials and Methods: All patients admitted in the surgical ward of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital with the diagnosis of AP were studied prospectively over a period of 1 year between 2014and 2015. Peak ALT within 48 h of presentation was recorded. Etiology was determined on the basis of history, Abdominal Ultrasound (AUS) and other relevant investigations. Results: A total of 80 patients of AP were included in the study. Among them, 46 (57.5%) patients had biliary pancreatitis, 18(22.5%) had alcoholic pancreatitis, 4(5%) patients had drug induced pancreatitis and 12(15%) patients had idiopathic pancreatitis. 46(57.5%) were male and 34(42.5%) were female. Mean ALT for biliary pancreatitis was 212.5U/L, for alcoholic was 58 U/L, for drug induced was 71 U/L and for idiopathic was 43 U/L. When compared between biliary and non-biliary pancreatitis, it was statistically significant( p value < 0.00). Biliary was the most common etiology followed by alcoholic. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value(PPV) and negative predictive value(NPV) of alanine aminotransferase with cut off of 100 U/L for biliary pancreatitis was 65%, 94%, 91.5% and 72.8% respectively. Conclusion: An elevated ALT strongly supports a diagnosis of gallstones in Acute Pancreatitis.

Abstract:
Introductory biology for nonmajors provides an opportunity to engage students with the complexity of life. In these courses, instructors also have the opportunity to experiment with course material and delivery, especially with an intent to overcome common misconceptions about biology. Fortunately, frameworks exist that can be integrated into a completely novel classroom framework: the AP biology curriculum and the tree of life. In addition, assessments are available that specifically address common misconceptions. I tested whether such a novel approach, covering the four big ideas in biology equally and structured around an accurate depiction of biodiversity as a branching history of evolution, can improve student comprehension of difficult biological concepts. In the end, I found that students improved significantly in their understanding of biology and were much less likely to have common misconceptions about difficult topics.

Abstract:
Despite concerted efforts to increase participation in advanced placement (AP) and dual credit (DC) programs, their efficacy remains unexplored. Drawing upon St. John’s model as the conceptual framework, this study employed a discrete-time event history analysis to examine the interplay between forms of financial aid and persistence toward degree completion for students participating in DC and AP programs and enrolling in a large, multicampus, Midwestern, U.S. University. First-time, first-year baccalaureate degree-seeking students who began studies in Fall 2012 were tracked for 4 years. The findings suggest that many factors are significantly related to college success, including student demographics such as race (especially Latino identity), first-generation status, housing status, socioeconomic status, and dependency status; high school performance, AP/DC participation, and SAT or ACT scores; and financial aid, such as Pell and federal grant aid and institutional grant programs. Results suggest that receiving Pell and federal grant aid and institutional grant-in-aid consistently and significantly attenuated the risks of student departure. In relation to prematriculation college-level credits, AP participants were more likely to receive institutional grant programs, whereas DC participants were more likely to have student loans. These findings have implications regarding the efficacy of DC/AP programs in regard to their interplay with financial aid systems in affecting persistence outcomes.

Abstract:
The Hardy-Weinberg principle (HWP) is an application of the binomial expansion theorem that is foundational to the field of population genetics. Because of the important history of the HWP in answering how variation is preserved during evolution, and the ability of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) to detect natural and sexual selection acting on a trait, the HWP is a staple of the introductory biology undergraduate curriculum in the United States. Introductory courses often cover a wide range of topics in ecology and evolution, and it is important that students have enough time during the semester to grasp the foundations of population genetics. At the same time, information needs to be presented clearly to ensure that the student gains a correct understanding of the HWP. This article discusses the importance of the HWP to undergraduate education in biology and describes misconceptions from the instructor’s perspective. These misconceptions are pervasive and risk undermining a proper understanding of the HWP. We provide examples adapted from university- and AP-level standardized tests.

Abstract:
Austrian capital theory tried to capture the intuitive and basically undeniable importance that time plays in economic life, but arguably was diverted down a blind alley with Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk’s average period of production, a purely physical measure of ‘roundaboutness’—the length of the production process. For the general case, such a measure is a chimera. But the intuition is strong, and the idea survived and reappeared at various points in the history of capital theory. Almost unknown to economists, an alternative value measure of roundaboutness has existed at least since John Hicks’s formulation of his average period (AP) in 1939, which, coincidentally, was exactly the same measure discovered by the financial actuary Frederick Macaulay in 1938, called by him “Duration” (D). Macaulay’s D, more richly interpreted as Hicks’s AP, is a measure that more appropriately captures what it was that the Austrians struggled to express over many years in their capital theory and in their analysis of the business cycle.

Abstract:

Abstract:
To increase student engagement as well as cover the content of Ancient Rome, the author developed a game named Civitas for an AP Art History course. The question driving this research project was, "Will incorporating a game into this Ancient Rome unit increase engagement without sacrificing the academic integrity of the class?" Research about engagement as well as others' success incorporating games into the classroom was examined to determine the benefits and difficulties. Much of the work for this unit came before any teaching occurred: designing all aspects of the game as well as carefully determining how it would contribute to measurable learning objectives. The researcher video recorded three AP History courses, with a total of 8 students, over a period of one week. Data collection measures used to determine engagement included a video-recording of the class, keeping a log of engaged behaviors, personal observations, and student free-response questions. Data collection measures to determine evidence of learning content about Ancient Rome included analysis of students' homework, discussions in the class, a multiple-choice test, and an essay test. Upon analysis, it was concluded that playing Civitas greatly increased engagement as well as contributed to the academic integrity of the unit. However, it also took twice as long to engage with the same subject matter, was expensive to produce, and many hours of preparation, which limits the ability to share this learning strategy with others.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the study of ancient Armenian sanctuaries from the Hellenistic to the Christian period, which marks the change of religion and the gradual abandonment of pagan temples. This work is based on the study of historical sources and data from archaeological excavations. The question is knowing where the pagan temples stood in Great Armenia. As a corollary, various questions have gradually been added to this first one. Once these temples had been identified, they have to be studied by classifying them by category and type in order to understand their status in the pagan society. Finally, their disappearance raises the question of their destiny and commits to study more generally the destruction of the pagan sites during the Christianization of Armenia

Chapter 114 focuses on several of the more commonly seen types of skeletal dysplasia, such as achondroplasia, Hurler syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, and thanatophoric dwarfism. Skeletal dysplasia results from genetic mutations that cause abnormalities in bone or cartilage. There are more than 450 skeletal dysplasias and most are rare. Many dysplasias are detected on prenatal US, and family history, physical examination, and molecular and genetic testing are also used in diagnosis. A skeletal survey is recommended including skull AP and lateral; thoracolumbar spine AP and lateral; and AP views of the chest, pelvis, upper limbs, and lower limbs. Abstract:
This chapter addresses how the Advanced Placement (AP) program became entangled with both partisans and critics of “liberal education.” Conflicts between devotees of liberal education on the one hand and disciplinary specialization on the other—often referred to as “culture wars”—extend far beyond academe, but they are especially intense among university faculty, particularly in the humanities and social sciences—and in the field of education itself. For AP to remain credible with both high schools and colleges, it must balance these contending forces. If an AP class strays too far into the esoteric, subjective, and sometimes doctrinaire realms of many college courses in these fields, it forfeits its ability to provide high school students with a broad and reasonably objective “universal grounding.” However, if it remains a simple survey course, particularly the kind that—in the case of history—concentrates on factual knowledge of things like elections, presidents, and wars, it will no longer convince professors in that field that doing well in it justifies college credit.

Abstract:
As students, teachers, and school professionals work to determine boundaries between the classroom and social media, often implementation choices are being made between the lines of school technology policies. In response to formal barriers, many students are taking it upon themselves to make their own social media sites, such as Facebook, to supplement their classroom learning. In this study, a class Facebook page encompassing five sections of an AP United States History course at Ida Baker High School was captured for an entire school year, and the results were recorded and coded to show how students used the page. Whether to consider Facebook as a viable official tool for the school ultimately becomes the decision of the District’s Technology Officer, the Principal, the Department Chair, and the teachers. To help guide this decision, a survey was conducted to determine the participants’ perception of the online tool. Ultimately, this case examines whether one school should embrace this widely used, free tool to accompany traditional classes or continue with more formal software to supplement the classroom.

"ably salient acros s most people of a given culture or subculture. Other stimuli or surrounding circumstances are relevant but are more idiosyncratic to the situation or people involved in the interac-tions, such as the peoples* past histories of interaction with each other, th e authority one person has over another, or the contingen-cies one can exert over the other, and whether or not there is some apparent evidence that, in fact, a poor job was done. For example, if your boss tells you that you have done a poor job in a serious tone of voic e with an unsmiling face, it might be appropriate to ask what the problem was, to discuss the reason for what happened and try to discover ways to avoid that problem in the future. In contrast, if a peer who had a long history o f unfairly criticizing your activities told you the same thing, in a casual manner and there was little ap-parent evidence that a poor job was done, you might simply acknowledge the remark or even indicate that you found the remark offensive. Thus, identification of what types of responses might b e appropriate in particular social situations requires a very complex set o f discriminative skills which often need to be used without substantial warning and implemented quickly. Given identification of the stimuli which determine a general type o f response in a social situation, an adolescent needs to display the specific verbal and nonverbal behaviors of the general response. Certain of these behaviors such as making periodic eye contact while the other person is speaking, facing the other person, main-taining a relaxed posture and using a neutral or enthusiastic voice tone need to occur throughout the social interaction . Other behaviors need to occur within a specific sequence. For example, in a greeting and subsequent conversation, a salutation might be followed by a general question about the health of the other person, and then by more specific questions and responsive statements about topics o f possible common interest or about something that the other person mentioned in previous conversations. Further , the sequence of behaviors needs to be arranged to encompass the possible options or branches that might occur in the interactions. For example, the sequence of behaviors modeled in giving negative feedback to another person would vary depending on whether the other person agreed or did not agree with the feedback. Finally, there are general organizational and meshing skills which are essential for successful social interactions. These include using a vocabulary and content appropriate to the person with whom the adolescent is interacting, taking turns in the interaction,'picking." Abstract:
Form feature data exchange is divided into three types: CAD-to-CAD, CAD-to-Downstream applications and inter-downstream applications. Essential characteristics for CAD-to-CAD and CAD-to-Downstream types of feature data transfer are established flowed by a set of criteria for evaluation of a form feature exchange schema. Contemporary neutral feature data exchange schemas like AP 224, AP 203 and NRep are evaluated. It is concluded that none of them is fully equipped to do the job. AP 203 belongs to the CAD-to-CAD feature data exchange class. It exchanges only the final part geometry and the feature model is lost. AP 224 and NRep belong to the CAD-to-Downstream class. AP 224 attempts to enlist all features that can be manufactured using milling and turning processes. It limits the user to finite set of features. On the other hand, NRep permits the user to define his own features and does not provide a standard set. For a complete feature data transfer between two CAD applications, one needs to model the design intent of each design feature and transfer it with construction history of creation of the part model while for an efficient feature data transfer between CAD and downstream applications, the schema needs to standardize a set of most common features but also provide means for the user to define customized features with desired parameterization and attributes.

Abstract:
In a world striving for continuous improvement, the utility and manufacturing industries appear to have taken different paths to success. But are they the same and can we learn from them to take a revolutionary step towards manufacturing excellence for Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel? The safety critical environment that is the hallmark of the nuclear industry has led the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) to develop a rigorous and disciplined approach to equipment reliability that is repeated across the nuclear generation industry. This is manifested in well documented processes and procedures in response to the heavily audited power generation segment. INPO’s Equipment Reliability guideline, AP-913, is a top down methodology that captures equipment history and best practices to tie together activities throughout a station to improve reliability. Manufacturing however is breeding a culture of continuous improvement, or “kaizens”, where “Lean” and “Total Productive Maintenance” (TPM) tools and techniques drive a multiplicity of incremental improvements. The manufacturing concepts and approaches of Lean and TPM were developed originally in Japan by such companies as Toyota and Motorola and formalized by the Japan Institute of Plant Management as an equipment management strategy, which was designed to support the Total Quality Management strategy. Lean and TPM are fostered by professional societies and are well described in a body of literature with decades of experience. Since this paper provides a cross-discipline comparison in a primarily nuclear applications conference, introductory material for the TPM methodology is referenced, while only overview concepts are described herein. It is hoped that this will spur the reader to develop a more complete understanding of TPM, to further integrate these applications in both industries. This paper provides an initial overview of how Westinghouse Fuel Manufacturing is developing an equipment reliability programme that is exploiting the best practices of the AP-913 integrated processes with the strong continuous improvement tool set of manufacturing. We have just begun to roll-out the new processes and guidelines. In future papers, more detailed comparisons and lessons learned from implementation will be described.

Abstract:
The North American plains bison once numbered in the tens of millions, but only around 1,000 individuals remained by the late 1800s. Through the actions of private individuals and organizations, the establishment of a few protected, federally managed, herds saved the subspecies from extinction and today the Department of the Interior (DOI) supports ap-proximately 11,000 plains bison in 19 herds across 12 states. DOI chartered the Bison Conservation Initiative in 2008, which established a framework for bison conservation and restoration on appropriate lands within the species’ histori-cal range. With the recent announcement of the 2020 DOI Bison Conservation Initiative, DOI outlined a diverse range of accomplishments made under the 2008 Initiative and re-affirmed the commitment to work with partners in support of managing bison as native wildlife. Both the 2008 and 2020 DOI Bison Conservation Initiatives endorse a holistic approach, addressing health and genetic considerations, and recommend managing DOI bison herds together as a metapopulation to conserve genetic diversity by restoring gene flow. Bison conservation and restoration efforts must consider the significance of disease in bison herds and apply a multi-jurisdictional, multi-stakeholder approach to the management of bison on large landscapes. Robust herd health surveillance programs, both in the donor and recipient herds, along with strong partnerships and communication, are needed to protect the century-long success of DOI bison conservation and stewardship. This report discusses overarching principles affecting bison health decisions in DOI herds and provides detailed baseline herd health history and management, providing a foundation upon which the 2020 Bison Conservation Initiative vision for DOI bison stewardship can be realized.
