The article analyzes the peculiarities of aphorisms functioning in linguistic scientific discourse. Linguistic aphorisms have been identified as individual authorial utterances that reflect subjective interpretation of linguistic terms. Over seven hundred aphoristic utterances were taken from scientific, academic, reference and fiction books, as well as from collections of aphorisms, where the linguistic terms have been presented. This article concerns Wittgenstein’s way of writing. Among the questions that have been addresses, there is the relation between common language and literary language. Another problem is Wittgenstein’s aphoristic writing. Wittgenstein’s poetics of writing has been analyzed in the light of its similarity to the poetry, games and poetics of Gertrude Stein and William Carlos Williams.
