Abstract:
Cloud computing trends such as Software as a Service (SaaS) enable providers to host complex applications over the Internet, making them available to external consumers through an Application Programming Interface (API). The success of a SaaS, and in some sense any distributed system, is greatly influenced by its API. Highly usable APIs improve the efficiency of the development process and its quality, ensuring that programmers continue to appreciate other aspects of the API while increasing their productivity. Different studies state that the design phase within the development process of an API is the most appropriate to address usability issues. Therefore, usability should be considered as an explicit criterion in the design of an API. In this paper, we propose a design guide for web APIs with an emphasis on usability, using the best practices of usable web APIs design. Our design guide is based on an adaptation of the design science research methodology (DSRM), and it is complemented with a systematic literature review and gray literature analysis concerning methods, techniques, and tools used to develop usable APIs.

Abstract:
Given the current state of software development, it does not seem that we are nowhere near vulnerability-free software applications, due to many reasons, and software developers are one of them. Insecure coding practices, the complexity of the task in hand, and usability issues, amongst other reasons, make it hard on software developers to maintain secure code. When it comes to cryptographic currencies, the need for assuring security is inevitable. For example, Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer software system that is primarily used as digital money. There exist many software libraries supporting various programming languages that allow access to the Bitcoin system via an Application Programming Interface (API). APIs that are inappropriately used would lead to security vulnerabilities, which are hard to discover, resulting in many zero-day exploits. Making APIs usable is, therefore, an essential aspect related to the quality and robustness of the software. This paper surveys the general academic literature concerning API usability and usable security. Furthermore, it evaluates the API usability of Libbitcoin, a well-known C++ implementation of the Bitcoin system, and assesses how the findings of this evaluation could affect the applications that use Libbitcoin. For that purpose, the paper proposes two static analysis tools to further investigate the use of Libbitcoin APIs in open-source projects from a security usability perspective. The findings of this research have improved Libbitcoin in many places, as will be shown in this paper.

Abstract:
Hand tracking enables controller-free interaction with virtual environments, which can, compared to traditional handheld controllers, make virtual reality (VR) experiences more natural and immersive. As naturalness hinges on both technological and user-based features, fine-tuning the former while assessing the latter can be used to increase usability. For a grab-and-place use case in immersive VR, we compared a prototype of a camera-based hand tracking interface (Leap Motion) with customized design elements to the standard Leap Motion application programming interface (API) and a traditional controller solution (Oculus Touch). Usability was tested in 32 young healthy participants, whose performance was analyzed in terms of accuracy, speed and errors as well as subjective experience. We found higher performance and overall usability as well as overall preference for the handheld controller compared to both controller-free solutions. While most measures did not differ between the two controller-free solutions, the modifications made to the Leap API to form our prototype led to a significant decrease in accidental drops. Our results do not support the assumption of higher naturalness for hand tracking but suggest design elements to improve the robustness of controller-free object interaction in a grab-and-place scenario.

Abstract:
Education is a right for every citizen. Quality education makes people more intelligent. Educational outcomes documented in a file called a diploma. A diploma is a necessary file for doing things related to work or other administrative matters. Generally, the diploma file submitted is in the form of a photocopy of a certificate that has been legalized for administrative requirements. The process of legalizing diplomas is often a hindrance because the time required is quite long and especially if someone is in an area far from where to take care of legalization. In the industrial era 4.0, information technology can be utilized to facilitate public access to services in the world of education, for example, using technology to implement an online legalization system. Application of technology in the legalization process is not just online but can be integrated with API (Application Programming Interface). It can attract millennial access to the application easily. There are two APIs used, namely the Shipping API and the Social Messaging API. Shipping API makes it easy to check shipping costs based on alumni location. Social messaging API with assistant features so that it can be easier to serve alumni accessing application features via Telegram. This study aims to facilitate the alumni in legalizing online to make time-efficient and affordable—implementation of information systems with the integrated website media Telegram API and Rajaongkir or shipping cost API. Based on testing the usability testing results obtained a value of 4.56 on a scale of 5. These results indicate that the application can function following the needs of users of information systems.

Abstract:
Java is growing in appropriateness and usability for high performance computing. With this increasing adoption, issues relating to combining Java with existing codes in other languages become more important. The Java Native Interface (JNI) API is portable but too inconvenient to be used directly owing to its low-level API. This paper presents Janet — a highly expressive Java language extension and preprocessing tool that enables convenient integration of native code with Java programs. The Janet methodology overcomes some of the limitations of JNI and generates Java programs that execute with little or no degradation despite the flexibility and generality of the interface.

Abstract:
The use of natural language processing (NLP) methods and their application to developing conversational systems for health diagnosis increases patients’ access to medical knowledge. In this study, a chatbot service was developed for the Covenant University Doctor (CUDoctor) telehealth system based on fuzzy logic rules and fuzzy inference. The service focuses on assessing the symptoms of tropical diseases in Nigeria. Telegram Bot Application Programming Interface (API) was used to create the interconnection between the chatbot and the system, while Twilio API was used for interconnectivity between the system and a short messaging service (SMS) subscriber. The service uses the knowledge base consisting of known facts on diseases and symptoms acquired from medical ontologies. A fuzzy support vector machine (SVM) is used to effectively predict the disease based on the symptoms inputted. The inputs of the users are recognized by NLP and are forwarded to the CUDoctor for decision support. Finally, a notification message displaying the end of the diagnosis process is sent to the user. The result is a medical diagnosis system which provides a personalized diagnosis utilizing self-input from users to effectively diagnose diseases. The usability of the developed system was evaluated using the system usability scale (SUS), yielding a mean SUS score of 80.4, which indicates the overall positive evaluation.

Abstract:
Piping systems are important in the oil and gas plant’s operation, but continuous damage is harming the piping system due to extensive usage resulting in the increase of accident cases. API 570 Piping Inspection Code: In-service Inspection, Rating, Repair, and Alteration of Piping Systems has proposed an in-service piping inspection practice to ensure the in-service piping is functionable by identifying the remaining life of the piping system. However, the in-service piping inspection process is numerous and complicated where certain steps may be skipped, and data collected may lost along the process. The in-service piping inspection framework followed by a work-aid tool is developed in this study based on API 570 to guide the user the piping inspection process along with providing a depository database for document storage. Validation test is conducted by collecting feedback from professional piping engineer using System Usability Scale followed by conducting a case study using secondary data and sample attachment to test the functionality of the work-aid tool. The work-aid tool can guide the piping inspection process and provide a systematic documentation method for corresponding inspection documents. Case study in the industry is recommended to test the usability of the tool in the industry.

Abstract:
Abstract Mobile devices have become an integral part of our life and provide dozens of useful services to their users. However, usability of mobile devices is hindered by battery lifetime. Energy conservation can extend battery lifetime, however, any energy management policy requires accurate prediction of energy consumption, which is impossible without reliable energy measurement and estimation methods and tools. We present an analysis of the energy measurement methodologies and describe the implementations of the internal (profiling) software (proprietary, custom) and external software-based (Java API, Sensor API, GSM AT) energy measurement methodologies. The methods are applied to measure energy consumption on a variety of mobile devices (laptop PC, PDA, smart phone). A case study of measuring energy consumption on a mobile computer using 3DMark06 benchmarking software is presented

Abstract:
To avoid any type of cross-contamination, residue-free production equipment is of utmost importance in the pharmaceutical industry. The equipment cleaning for continuous processes such as hot melt extrusion (HME), which has recently gained popularity in pharmaceutical applications, necessitates extensive manual labour and costs. The present work tackles the HME cleaning issue by investigating two cleaning strategies following the extrusion of polymeric formulations of a hormonal drug and for a sustained release formulation of a poorly soluble drug. First, an in-line quantification by means of UV–Vis spectroscopy was successfully implemented to assess very low active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) concentrations in the extrudates during a cleaning procedure for the first time. Secondly, a novel in-situ solvent-based cleaning approach was developed and its usability was evaluated and compared to a polymer-based cleaning sequence. Comparing the in-line data to typical swab and rinse tests of the process equipment indicated that inaccessible parts of the equipment were still contaminated after the polymer-based cleaning procedure, although no API was detected in the extrudate. Nevertheless, the novel solvent-based cleaning approach proved to be suitable for removing API residue from the majority of problematic equipment parts and can potentially enable a full API cleaning-in-place of a pharmaceutical extruder for the first time.

Abstract:
Testing on the software is needed to guarantee its capabilities. So software in real condition wouldn’t have any deflect with the performance to providing wich in line with the goal of development. Testing the Application Programming Interface (API) unit on the web service is an effort to testing the performance of each unit. Specifically tested unit will be combined with other units to become an integrated system. A Mobile application requires API support as the connector to a database, which not directly related to mobile application. The user-interface in mobile application only act as a visual interaction between the user and the system. The commanded system will respond through feedback which connected into a connector and gives the response back through the connector and returns in visual form through an interface. Test-Driven Development (TTD) was used in testing each system unit. Designing and building web service on e-voting application requires testing so that application can be used properly without causing bugs or errors that can interface system performance. Approved APIs are able to process voter data, validate voter data and election. The system also tested with “System Usability Scale” method which gains 69,02 total score.

Abstract:
Abstract BEAGLE is a high-performance likelihood-calculation library for phylogenetic inference. The BEAGLE library defines a simple, but flexible, application programming interface (API), and includes a collection of efficient implementations for calculation under a variety of evolutionary models on different hardware devices. The library has been integrated into recent versions of popular phylogenetics software packages including BEAST and MrBayes and has been widely used across a diverse range of evolutionary studies. Here, we present BEAGLE 3 with new parallel implementations, increased performance for challenging data sets, improved scalability, and better usability. We have added new OpenCL and central processing unit-threaded implementations to the library, allowing the effective utilization of a wider range of modern hardware. Further, we have extended the API and library to support concurrent computation of independent partial likelihood arrays, for increased performance of nucleotide-model analyses with greater flexibility of data partitioning. For better scalability and usability, we have improved how phylogenetic software packages use BEAGLE in multi-GPU (graphics processing unit) and cluster environments, and introduced an automated method to select the fastest device given the data set, evolutionary model, and hardware. For application developers who wish to integrate the library, we also have developed an online tutorial. To evaluate the effect of the improvements, we ran a variety of benchmarks on state-of-the-art hardware. For a partitioned exemplar analysis, we observe run-time performance improvements as high as 5.9-fold over our previous GPU implementation. BEAGLE 3 is free, open-source software licensed under the Lesser GPL and available at https://beagle-dev.github.io.

Abstract:
In HEP experiments, remote access to control systems is one of the fundamental pillars of efficient operations. At the same time, development of user interfaces with emphasis on usability can be one of the most labor-intensive software tasks to be undertaken in the life cycle of an experiment. While desirable, the development and maintenance of a large variety of interfaces (e.g., desktop control interface, web monitoring interface, development API...) is often simply not feasible, as far as manpower is concerned. We present a solution employed in the control software of the iFDAQ of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. Being a mix of a command-line and terminal tool, this interface can fulfill the roles of a dynamic monitoring interface, a control interface, and a scripting API simultaneously. Furthermore, it can easily be used as a remote access tool for operations experts, needing nearly no setup user-side and being compatible with smartphones. We also discuss the methodology and results of a concrete use case – automated run control for performance tests of the iFDAQ readout software.

Abstract:
Internet of Things (IoT) devices are embedded with software, electronics, and sensors, and feature connectivity with constrained resources. They require the edge computing paradigm, with modular characteristics relying on microservices, to provide an extensible and lightweight computing framework at the edge of the network. Edge computing can relieve the burden of centralized cloud computing by performing certain operations, such as data storage and task computation, at the edge of the network. Despite the benefits of edge computing, it can lead to many challenges in terms of security and privacy issues. Thus, services that protect privacy and secure data are essential functions in edge computing. For example, the end user’s ownership and privacy information and control are separated, which can easily lead to data leakage, unauthorized data manipulation, and other data security concerns. Thus, the confidentiality and integrity of the data cannot be guaranteed and, so, more secure authentication and access mechanisms are required to ensure that the microservices are exposed only to authorized users. In this paper, we propose a microservice security agent to integrate the edge computing platform with the API gateway technology for presenting a secure authentication mechanism. The aim of this platform is to afford edge computing clients a practical application which provides user authentication and allows JSON Web Token (JWT)-based secure access to the services of edge computing. To integrate the edge computing platform with the API gateway, we implement a microservice security agent based on the open-source Kong in the EdgeX Foundry framework. Also to provide an easy-to-use approach with Kong, we implement REST APIs for generating new consumers, registering services, configuring access controls. Finally, the usability of the proposed approach is demonstrated by evaluating the round trip time (RTT). The results demonstrate the efficiency of the system and its suitability for real-world applications.

Abstract:
It is the mission of Vocational High School (SMK) education in Indonesia to produce highly competitive and skilled graduates. One standard for evaluating the success of vocational education is assessing the achievements of alumni. The evaluation process can be carried out with programmed alumni tracking activities or commonly known as tracer studies. However, the implementations of tracer studies that have been carried out by vocational schools in Kediri are still using the manual method. These conditions make the school find many obstacles in the implementation of tracer studies. Some schools have used technology with e-mail applications but have financial constraints. This research aims to improve the performance of assessing the alumni achievement of Vocational Schools in Kediri by integrating the website-based tracer study information system with social media Telegram API. Usability testing that gave 4.83 of 5 scales has shown that the integration can improve the performance and benefits of an application compared to the application before integration

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article deals with the method of speech recognition, namely, the possibility of using this technology for the language control of website elements. Due to the widespread introduction of such technologies into human lives, the task is to create a voice application that would improve the usability. The feature of the proposed model is the implementation of speech recognition not in the service, as it happens in most cases, but in the device itself, using only a microphone. In the existing design users can easily add any commands. Language recognition is implemented on the website page using the JavaScript programming language. The script work is based on the use of the SpeechRecognition Web Speech APIs and the SpeechGrammarList API for Web Speech. The current direction of the use of speech in the process of interaction between the technical system and the user is the application of such technology for creating comfortable living conditions for people who have a violation of the musculoskeletal system and who have lost the opportunity to use traditional means and methods of dialogue with the system. It analyzed the basic principles of the website and the ability to control it using voice control. To operate the proposed speech recognition model, two interfaces are used to solve the problem of managing elements of a website: SpeechRecognition Web Speech API and SpeechGrammarList API Web Speech. In order to manage the elements of the website, a model is proposed, the implementation of which is possible through the use of a microphone on the user's desktop only. The feature of the proposed model is that it is easy to add any commands to an already existing structure. Such application provides a great perspective for building new web interfaces in combination with artificial intelligence.

Abstract:
Indonesia is predominantly Muslim country. However, around 54% of Muslims cannot read the Qur'an. Many teenagers and adults argue that this is due to lack of time, shame to learn, not having a teacher and so on. Based on these problems, many methods are formulated to help the community in learning. The Tsaqifa method is one method that is claimed to make people able to read the Qur'an in just 7.5 hours. However, along with technological advances, this method began to be considered conventional. Therefore, there needs to be a new alternative so that learning methods can keep up with technological advances. Utilization of instant messaging can be used as an alternatives to implement existing learning methods especially Tsaqifa method that is expected can help communities learn independently, quickly, easily and interactively. In this study, the application of the Tsaqifa method was carried out by developing an application of chatbot in learning the Al-Qur'an reading media that utilizes the LINE Messaging API. Applications that have been built are tested with 2 methods that is Blackbox Testing and System Usability Scale (SUS). In testing using Blackbox Testing, the overall functionality of the application has been declared successfully run and based on the results of the System Usability Scale (SUS) test, obtained an average score of 73.3 out of 20 respondents which means the application can be accepted by the public (acceptable).

Abstract:
Social media apps provide analysts with a wide range of data to study behavioral aspects of our everyday lives and to answer societal questions. Although social media data analysis is booming, only a handful of prominent social media apps, such as Twitter, Foursquare/Swarm, Facebook, or LinkedIn are typically used for this purpose. However, there is a large selection of less known social media apps that go unnoticed in the scientific community. This paper reviews 110 social media apps and assesses their potential usability in geospatial research through providing metrics on selected characteristics. About half of the apps (57 out of 110) offer an Application Programming Interface (API) for data access, where rate limits, fee models, and type of spatial data available for download vary strongly between the different apps. To determine the current role and relevance of social media platforms that offer an API in academic research, a search for scientific papers on Google Scholar, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Digital Library, and the Science Core Collection of the Web of Science (WoS) is conducted. This search revealed that Google Scholar returns the highest number of documents (Mean = 183,512) compared to ACM (Mean = 1895) and WoS (Mean = 1495), and that data and usage patterns from prominent social media apps are more frequently analyzed in research studies than those of less known apps. The WoS citation database was also used to generate lists of themes covered in academic publications that analyze the 57 social media platforms that offer an API. Results show that among these 57 platforms, for 26 apps at least some papers evolve around a geospatial discipline, such as Geography, Remote Sensing, Transportation, or Urban Planning. This analysis, therefore, connects apps with commonly used research themes, and together with tabulated API characteristics can help researchers to identify potentially suitable social media apps for their research. Word clouds generated from titles and abstracts of papers associated with the 57 platforms, grouped into seven thematic categories, show further refinement of topics addressed in the analysis of social media platforms. Considering various evaluation criteria, such as provision of geospatial data or the number (i.e., absence) of currently published research papers in connection with a social media platform, the study concludes that among the numerous social media apps available today, 17 less known apps deserve closer examination since they might be used to investigate previously underexplored research topics. It is hoped that this study can serve as a reference for the analysis of the social media landscape in the future.

Abstract:
Background Personal health record (PHR) technology can be used to support workplace health promotion, and prevent social and economic losses related to workers’ health management. PHR services can not only ensure interoperability, security, privacy, and data quality, but also consider the user’s perspective in their design. Objective Using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and national health care data sets, this study aimed to design and develop an app for providing worker-centered, interconnected PHR services. Methods This study considered the user’s perspective, using the human-centered design (HCD) methodology, to develop a PHR app suitable for occupational health. We developed a prototype after analyzing quantitative and qualitative data collected from workers and a health care professional group, after which we performed a usability evaluation. We structured workers’ PHR items based on the analyzed data, and ensured structural and semantic interoperability using FHIR, Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine–Clinical Terms (SNOMED-CT), and Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC). This study integrated workers’ health information scattered across different Korean institutions through an interface method, and workers’ PHRs were managed through a cloud server, using Azure API for FHIR. Results In total, 562 workers from industrial parks participated in the quantitative study. The preferred data items for PHR were medication, number of steps walked, diet, blood pressure, weight, and blood glucose. The preferred features were ability to access medical checkup results, health information content provision, consultation record inquiry, and teleconsultation. The worker-centered PHR app collected data on, among others, life logs, vital signs, and medical checkup results; offered health care services such as reservation and teleconsultation; and provided occupational safety and health information through material safety data sheet search and health questionnaires. The app reflected improvements in user convenience and app usability proposed by 19 participants (7 health care professionals and 12 end users) in the usability evaluation. The After-Scenario Questionnaire (ASQ) was evaluated with a mean score of 5.90 (SD 0.34) out of 7, and the System Usability Scale (SUS) was evaluated a mean score of 88.7 (SD 4.83) out of 100. Conclusions The worker-centered PHR app integrates workers’ health information from different institutions and provides a variety of health care services from linked institutions through workers’ shared PHR. This app is expected to increase workers’ autonomy over their health information and support medical personnel’s decision making regarding workers’ health in the workplace. Particularly, the app will provide solutions for current major PHR challenges, and its design, which considers the user’s perspective, satisfies the prerequisites for its utilization in occupational health.

Abstract:
Next Generation Sequencing technologies have produced a substantial increase of publicly available genomic data and related clinical/biospecimen information. New models and methods to easily access, integrate and search them effectively are needed. An effort was made by the Genomic Data Commons (GDC), which defined strict procedures for harmonizing genomic and clinical data of cancer, and created the GDC data portal with its application programming interface (API). In this work, we enhance GDC harmonization by applying a state of the art data model (called Genomic Data Model) made of two components: the genomic data, in Browser Extensible Data (BED) format, and the related metadata, in a tab-delimited key-value format. Furthermore, we extend the GDC genomic data with information extracted from other public genomic databases (e.g., GENCODE, HGNC and miRBase). For metadata, we implemented automatic procedures to extract and normalize them, recognizing and eliminating redundant ones, from both Clinical/Biospecimen Supplements and GDC Data Model, that are present on the two sources of GDC (i.e., data portal and API). We developed and released the OpenGDC software, which is able to extract, integrate, extend, and standardize genomic and clinical data of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) from the GDC. Additionally, we created a publicly accessible repository, containing such homogenized and enhanced TCGA data (resulting in about 1.3 TB). Our approach, implemented in the OpenGDC software, provides a step forward to the effective and efficient management of big genomic and clinical data of cancer. The strong usability of our data model and utility of our work is demonstrated through the application of the GenoMetric Query Language (GMQL) on the transformed TCGA data from the GDC, achieving promising results, facilitating information retrieval and knowledge discovery analyses.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to enhance productivity and economic value with precise object information generation and reinforcement quantity take-off by developing the Automation Reinforcement Placement System of Foundation (ARPF). This study was conducted by selecting the most basic form, spread footing, and no force was applied on the foundation other than axial force. For the development of ARPF, variables that should be input into the typical programs directly by users were minimized through developing the reinforcement placement algorithm by using visual C# based on the reinforced concrete structure design standard. The process of reinforcement detail placement formation was performed in the Tekla Structure (TS) that has outstanding accessibility and usability of API. Objects made by applying ARPF enable information confirmation and modification, as typical ones. Through this process using ARPF, rapid and precise reinforcement quantity take-off and footing bar placement are possible. If modeling is performed on the Tekla Structures by using ARPF, a detailed 3D reinforcement placing drawing, not 2D, can be created. It is expected that this method may take a smaller amount of time and effort than the typical drawing generation method that users had to generate objects or input information themselves.

Abstract:
Abstract In this article, a system Smart Emergency Notification System (SENS) is proposed for both emergency responders and the community. SENS detects single/multiple emergency case(s) (i.e. road accident, fire, and injury) automatically from images sent by a smartphone via the Internet by the proposed promising approach; afterward, it notifies the police, fire brigade, and/or ambulance. The SENS has three modules: the mobile application SENSdroid, the Web application WebSENS, and the software agent NotiSENS, which uses the proposed approach. This approach is as follows. First, a dataset that contains accident, fire, and injury images was constructed; their labels were obtained for training; the trained results, Google Cloud Vision API, and cosine similarity measurement were used to detect the emergency case(s) for an input image. Based on the test results, the approach has 84% sensitivity, 92% specificity, and 88% accuracy. It is possible to say that SENS would have a positive effect on helping the harmed person, supporting the staff on duty, protecting the person who can be harmed, and/or saving Nature. Additionally, this system would have high usability because of its easy-to-use features and high rates of smartphone and Internet users. It is believed that SENS could be an efficient and useful system.

Abstract:
Weather forecasting is one of the biggest challenges that modern science is still contending with. The advent of high-power computing, technical advancement of data storage devices, and incumbent reduction in the storage cost have accelerated data collection to turmoil. In this background, many artificial intelligence techniques have been developed and opened interesting window of opportunity in hitherto difficult areas. India is on the cusp of a major technology overhaul with millions of people's data availability who were earlier unconnected with the internet. The country needs to fast forward the innovative use of available data. The proposed model endeavors to forecast temperature, precipitation, and other vital information for usability in the agrarian sector. This project intends to develop a robust weather forecast model that learns automatically from the daily feed of weather data that is input through a third-party API source. The weather feed is sourced from openweathermap, an online service that provides weather data, and is streamed into the forecast model through Kafka components. The LSTM neural network used by the forecast model is designed to continuously learn from predictions and perform actual analysis. The model can be architected to be implemented across very large applications having the capability to process large volumes of streamed or stored data.

Abstract:
Information systems of critical infrastructure provide services on which the core functions of a state and its economy depend as well as welfare of society. Such systems are becoming an increasingly common target for crimes and attacks in cyberspace, as their vulnerabilities can be exploited for malicious activities seeking financial or political gain. One of the main reasons that threatens the security of these systems is the weak control of remote access, otherwise defined as management of a system’s user identity. Management of user identity depends on user authentication, authorization and the assignment of certain rights in the digital space. This paper provides the proposed two-factor (2FA) digital authentication method for remote access to an information system of a critical infrastructure. Results of testing the method’s usability and resilience to cyber threats have shown that the system, in which the method was implemented, is protected from dangerous HTTP requests and publicly available system’s endpoints are protected from threatening inputs that could cause malicious activities on the critical infrastructure. Additionally, the implementation of the authentication API application ensures the rapidity of the method for less than 500 ms for 100 users working in parallel with the system at the same time.

Abstract:
Background In the dentistry field, the analysis of dental plaque is vital because it is the main etiological factor in the 2 most prevalent oral diseases: caries and periodontitis. In most of the papers published in the dental literature, the quantification of dental plaque is carried out using traditional, non-automated, and time-consuming indices. Therefore, the development of an automated plaque quantification tool would be of great value to clinicians and researchers. Objective This study aimed to develop a web-based tool called DenTiUS and various clinical indices to evaluate dental plaque levels using image analysis techniques. Methods The tool was executed as a web-based application to facilitate its use by researchers. Expert users are free to define experiments, including images from either a single patient (to observe an individual plaque growth pattern) or several patients (to perform a group characterization) at a particular moment or over time. A novel approach for detecting visible plaque has been developed as well as a new concept known as nonvisible plaque. This new term implies the classification of the remaining dental area into 3 subregions according to the risk of accumulating plaque in the near future. New metrics have also been created to describe visible and nonvisible plaque levels. Results The system generates results tables of the quantitative analysis with absolute averages obtained in each image (indices about visible plaque) and relative measurements (indices about visible and nonvisible plaque) relating to the reference moment. The clinical indices that can be calculated are the following: plaque index of an area per intensity (API index, a value between 0 and 100), area growth index (growth rate of plaque per unit of time in hours; percentage area/hour), and area time index (the time in days needed to achieve a plaque area of 100% concerning the initial area at the same moment). Images and graphics can be obtained for a moment from a patient in addition to a full report presenting all the processing data. Dentistry experts evaluated the DenTiUS Plaque software through a usability test, with the best-scoring questions those related to the workflow efficiency, value of the online help, attractiveness of the user interface, and overall satisfaction. Conclusions The DenTiUS Plaque software allows automatic, reliable, and repeatable quantification of dental plaque levels, providing information about area, intensity, and growth pattern. Abstract:
The advent of large-scale fluorescence and electronic microscopy techniques along with maturing image analysis is giving life sciences a deluge of geometrical objects in 2D/3D(+t) to deal with. These objects take the form of large scale, localised, precise, single cell, quantitative data such as cells’ positions, shapes, trajectories or lineages, axon traces in whole brains atlases or varied intracellular protein localisations, often in multiple experimental conditions. The data mining of those geometrical objects requires a variety of mathematical and computational tools of diverse accessibility and complexity. Here we present a new Python library for quantitative 3D geometry called GeNePy3D which helps handle and mine information and knowledge from geometric data, providing a unified application programming interface (API) to methods from several domains including computational geometry, scale space methods or spatial statistics. By framing this library as generically as possible, and by linking it to as many state-of-the-art reference algorithms and projects as needed, we help render those often specialist methods accessible to a larger community. We exemplify the usefulness of the GeNePy3D toolbox by re-analysing a recently published whole-brain zebrafish neuronal atlas, with other applications and examples available online. Along with an open source, documented and exemplified code, we release reusable containers to allow for convenient and wide usability and increased reproducibility.

Abstract:
AbstractMotivationWhile Python has become very popular in bioinformatics, a limited number of libraries exist for fast manipulation of gene coordinates in Ensembl GTF format.ResultsWe have developed the GTF toolkit Python package (pygtftk), which aims at providing easy and powerful manipulation of gene coordinates in GTF format. For optimal performances, the core engine of pygtftk is a C dynamic library (libgtftk) while the Python API provides usability and readability for developing scripts. Based on this Python package, we have developed the gtftk command line interface that contains 57 sub-commands (v0.9.10) to ease handling of GTF files. These commands may be used to (i) perform basic tasks (e.g. selections, insertions, updates or deletions of features/keys), (ii) select genes/transcripts based on various criteria (e.g. size, exon number, transcription start site location, intron length, GO terms) or (iii) carry out more advanced operations such as coverage analyses of genomic features using bigWig files to create faceted read-coverage diagrams. In conclusion, the pygtftk package greatly simplifies the annotation of GTF files with external information while providing advance tools to perform gene analyses.Availability and implementationpygtftk and gtftk have been tested on Linux and MacOSX and are available from https://github.com/dputhier/pygtftk under the MIT license. The libgtftk dynamic library written in C is available from https://github.com/dputhier/libgtftk.

Abstract:
Shale exposed around Dange northwestern, Nigeria was studied. The aim was to determine the grade, quality and usability of the shale as drilling mud using its physico-chemical and the rheological characteristics. Sixty-one (61) samples were collected from exposed sections and pits. Major elements such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and CaO were determined. X-ray diffraction method was employed for the qualitative identification of the minerals in the shale. Cation Exchange Capacity and Exchangeable cations were determined using the Methylene Blue Absorption and Ammonium Acetate Saturation Methods respectively. Grain-size distribution and Atterberg Limits tests were also conducted. Apparent Viscosity, Plastic Viscosity and Yield point were calculated from readings obtained on a multi-speed Fann viscometer. The dominant clay mineral observed is smectite (71%) implying good expansive potential. Dominant oxides were SiO2 (42.60-57.50%), Al2O3 (12.00-16.70%), CaO (0.43-12.50%). Exchangeable cations obtained were Na+ (0.48-6.67), Ca2+ (14.03-34.50) and K+ (0.42-1.95) meq/100g clay. Liquid and plastic limits ranged from 69.40-86.00% and 30.10-36.10% respectively giving a Plasticity Index of 39.40-52.60%. The samples plot close to Ca-montmorillonite on the clay identification chart. The viscosity increased on addition of 7-10% sodium carbonate. It has good sodium exchange potential. In the natural state, it does not meet the API/OCMA specifications. However, its rheological properties improved significantly on treatment with sodium carbonate thus confirming its suitability as raw material in drilling mud.
