Abstract:

Montagner, Emanuele. "Il culto di Apollo Carneo." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trieste, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10077/3496.

Abstract:
2008/2009

Nenci, Nicola. "Taking Apollo by the horns : reconsidering the cult(s) of Apollo Karneios in the Mediterranean." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25966.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines Apollo Karneios’ cult(s) in its religious, festive, and political aspects, and investigates the deity’s role in civic and ethnic identities: one of the most striking features of the cult of this deity is the evidence for its presence in many Dorian communities throughout the Mediterranean, particularly in Sparta, where Apollo Karneios’ cult was of central significance. My research endeavours to clarify the cult’s use in political relations between ancient Sparta and its colonies, and interrogates the evidence to determine where and when the cult originated; how we can recognise the deity in visual material; if Karneios was a Spartan god, or if he ‘belonged’ to all Dorians; and the role of his cult in the foundation of Spartan colonies, such as Thera and Cyrene. This work begins with a review of how previous scholarship addressed those issues raised above, and continues with an analysis of the iconography of the deity, combining literary sources with autopsy of the material evidence, which includes sculpted stelai, archaeological sites and monuments, and most numerous of all, inscriptions. Organising the evidence according to geographical areas, my work progresses comparing and contrasting the manifestation and character of the cult in various locations. In addition, my new readings of literary and epigraphical sources, combined with first-hand study of archaeological evidence, result in new reconstructions of monuments related to Karneios’ cult, and offers a new interpretation of Spartan civic and religious topography. As a last step, my research argues that although the cult displays regional variations to reflect local identities, the many similarities established a Dorian network around the Mediterranean, which changed over time. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on the formation and modifications of local identities and political relations among the Dorian poleis of the Mediterranean, highlighting the role of religion, and, in particular of Apollo Karneios in this complex historical process.

Konik, Adrian. "Apollo, Dionysus, dialectical reason and critical cinema." Thesis, University of Port Elizabeth, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/295.

Full text
Abstract:
The contemporary era is dominated by an Apollonian visual language, i.e. the visual language of mainstream cinema and the mass media, and this study concerns the role that critical cinema, as Dionysian subverter, plays under such conditions. I argue that critical cinema should not be viewed as something completely ‘new’ but rather as a new, or at least the latest, manifestation of an older subversive ‘Dionysian’ voice that has made its presence felt since the dawn of the hegemony of an Apollonian disposition in Homeric epic. (I maintain that the history of western culture can be understood in terms of the persistent tension between Apollonian and Dionysian dispositions, and I use the distinction Derrida makes in Différance, between restricted and general economies, to distinguish between them, respectively.) I begin by considering the Dionysian echoes within Homer’s Iliad and then consider the way in which they became a ‘roar’ in the tragedies of Aeschylus. After Aeschylus a predominantly Apollonian voice asserted itself once again (to various degrees) through the work of Sophocles and Euripides. This was in keeping with the trend towards a more (Apollonian) restricted economy that is reflected in the writings of Homer’s literary successors, and which reached a crucial stage in Plato’s valorisation of ‘dialectics’, or what I term ‘dialecticis m’, which saw the birth of ‘dialectical language’. Through Plato dialecticism, or dialectical language, became instantiated as the ‘language’ of western philosophy and this predisposed western culture to develop along predominantly Apollonian lines. This continued from Plato, through the Middle Ages, until in the 17th century this Apollonian trend became manifest in the concept of the stable, integral, autonomous and self -transparent Cartesian ego, which is inextricably linked to dialectical language that promises certainty of ‘truth’ and maintains the possibility of representing the world in its entirety (as a system). In the contemporary ‘age of a world picture’, the hegemonic (Apollonian) visual language of mainstream cinema and the mass media propagates and perpetuates the belief in the possibility of representing the world in its entirety through the image, and insofar as it caters to audiences’ needs for stability and certainty (of ‘truth’) through providing such ‘complete’ representations, shapes their subjectivity along the lines of the Cartesian ego. According to Baudrillard, in contemporary society and culture the hyperreal realm of visual language has become far more significant for individuals than their immediate, empirical experiences, and that, as a result, they are far less predisposed to discussion and reflection and far more prone to passive ‘watching’. Also, Adorno maintains that it is impossible to have a form of critical cinema because of the way in which features inherent to cinema predispose it towards being an ideological apparatus. However, if both Baudrillard and Adorno are correct then the future appears increasingly bleak as it involves nothing other than the continuation and propagation of the hegemony of the visual language of mainstream cinema and the mass media, with no possibility for critical resistance. I argue instead that critical cinema is possible because the move towards a more restricted economy, motivated by an Apollonian disposition, did not develop from Homer to the contemporary era without meeting Dionysian resistance. I trace the presence of a subversive Dionysian voice through Homer’s Iliad, through Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound, and through Plato’s Dialogues, where it echoes in the sentiments of some of Plato’s interlocutors, such as Callicles. In addition, I maintain that a ‘Dionysian’ voice resonates through both Nietzsche’s and Heidegger’s respective criticisms of ‘dialectical language’ and the ‘validity’ of the Cartesian ego. I argue that critical cinema, particularly Aronofsky’s postmodern critical cinema, parallels their similar epistemological and ontological perspectives in the way in which it engages with the (Apollonian) visual language of mainstream cinema and the mass media, and thereby, potentially, facilitates a more porous and protean subjectivity.

Thesis, Nice, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014NICE2043/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of 221 oracles from the Delphic sanctuary shows how a language has been created, specific to the sanctuary of Delphi : it is the voice of the god Apollo and his own language. The oracular texts, conceived in the spirit of the Delphic chresmologic divination, collected by inscriptions and especially by the literature which quotes them abundantly, are used as supports to analyse the linguistic, stylistic and poetic aspects and processes of the Delphic oracular language. The first part, which analyses the presence of the Delphic divination in the texts, shows that linguistically the oracles are exchanges between an enquirer and the god ; it is possible to find all the stages of their production and reception. The second part analyses the setting up of the Delphic collections, from Antiquity to our times. The third part shows a strong propensity for establishing linguistical codes, when it offers examples of meticulous, argumentative constructions. It also underlines the importance of the images (metaphors), puns, plays on syntactic or lexical antitheses, frequent riddles which the god subjects to the clearsightedness of the enquirers. The Delphic oracles are considered to be quoted texts which vary less in their enunciation than in their functions. We can tell that an oracular genre really exists, but the particular genre cannot exist without the others genres and depends on them. A Delphic oracular genre really exists, because the Delphic shrine was very powerful and very well known in the ancient Greek civilization as a cultural center, because we find in the Greek literature imitations of the oracles (pastiche and parody). Even if the texts do not belong to a specific and independent work, they present many linguistic and stylistic common marks : La langue d’Apollon (Apollo’s language)

Abstract:
Parnassius apollo is a widely distributed Eurasian butterfly species usually represented by small local populations. It’s distributed on the main mountain ranges from the Sierra Nevada to Alps, Carpathians, Caucasus to the Altai. Being narrow in its ecological requirement this butterfly is very sensitive to habitat and climatic changes, and in most of its range it is experiencing range contraction and sometimes population extinction. We have sequenced 869 bp of the mithocondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I (COI) for 80 populations (N=201) from several portions of the range. Analysis revealed 71 haplotypes genetically structured in two haplogroups: one with the populations from Continental Greece, Anatolia and Central/Northern Europe and the other different groups of populations (Spain, Pyrenees, Sicily, Alps-Appenines, Central Appennine, Peloponnesus, Caucasus, Central Asia), each confined to a geographical area likely result of a past fragmentation. Estimating evolutionary time indicate that populations of P.apollo experienced different waves of range expansion end fragmentation in the recent past and in particular they suggest that Upper Pleistocene climatic changes played a major role in shaping the phylogeographic pattern of this butterfly. Compared to Parnassius mnemosyne, which shares a similar range with P. apollo, the results suggest a discordant dating in the periods of demographic range expansion of these two species, reflecting their different ecological requirement.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the presentation of Apollo in Greek tragedy. Apollo is chosen as a particularly important tragic god because of his uniquely high profile in extant plays, and because of the continuing critical debate over his characterisation. Existing approaches to studying the god figure will be challenged. Traditionally these often found a `negative' god but gave limited consideration to the fifth-century context and were often judgemental in terms of twentieth-century morality. Recent studies have been more nuanced and against a wider contextual base but have generally been limited to studying Apollo in a single play. There will be new emphases in the questions asked, focusing on how the Apollo figures are created in the texts, how these figures are experienced by an Athenian audience, and how and why Apollo's presentation changes through the fifth century. The methodology is new in examining Apollo across all extant tragedies in which he has significant textual presence; also in showing how we can relate Apollo's tragic presentation to a wide range of aspects of the socio-cultural and religious contexts. The figure of Apollo is thus seen as being constructed within both the dynamics of tragedy and the social and religious contexts of Athens, bringing internal and external together in the experience of the spectators. Apollo is found to have potential for certain kinds of problematic tragic treatment. His morality and effectiveness are questioned in the earliest extant plays, but representations of the god in tragedy continue to shift and develop through the fifth century, in the distinctive approaches of new tragedians, and in engagement with new aspects of the Athenian context. The approach in this thesis aims to add to our understanding of how Apollo, and religion, function in tragedy for the fifth-century Athenians for whom the plays were produced

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the bronze sculpture known as the Piraeus Apollo and to establish its date of manufacture. It may be the first known monumental bronze sculpture in Greece, dating to the late sixth or early fifth century, or it could be a second century Archaistic bronze. For this investigation several different methods are employed. First, the archaeological context is discussed by reexamining the excavation history. Then Apollo's place in the canon of Greek sculpture is established using an art historical approach with a focus on connoisseurship to find Apollo's place in the canon of Greek sculpture through comparisons with other Greek sculpture. Previous scholarship is key to this section of the thesis. It is then placed chronologically using the current understanding of ancient bronze casting technologies and scientific analysis. Through this analysis, the Piraeus Apollo arises as an example of the Lingering Archaic style from the beginning of the fifth century.

Ye, Ying. "The role of Apollo (DCLRE1B) in telomere protection during replication." Lyon, École normale supérieure (sciences), 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009ENSL0512.

Full text
Abstract:
Telomeres are specialized nucleoprotein structures at the ends of linear chromosomes to maintain the integrity of chromosome ends. In human cells, telomeres are protected by a complex of six proteins bound to telomeric DNA, named shelterin. As a crucial component of shelterin, the human telomeric capping protein TRF2 is required for telomere stabilization and function. Recently, TRF2 was shown to form a complex with Apollo, a 5' -exonuclease of the metallo-beta-lactamase family. In this thesis, biochjemical, genetic, and cellular approaches were combined to understand the mechanism of 5' -exonuclease of Apollo in the telomere protection. First, in vitro evidence shows that TRF2 plays a dual role in controlling Apollo nuclease activity. TRF2 stimulates the nuclease activity of Apollo on TRF2-free DNA ends and inhibits it when it is bound proximately to the 5' end. This stimulatory effect of Apollo nuclease depends on the basic domain of TRF2. Second, the specific coupling between the Apollo nuclease activity and the dynamics of TRF2 DNA binding shows in vivo that TRF2 and Apollo are not only involved in the protection of the very-terminal structure of telomeres but also of the inner part of telomere repeat tracts, which is required for telomere integrity during S-phase. Moreover TRF2 and Apollo protect from DNA damage telomere repeat tracts inserted far away from chromosome ends, furthze indicating that TRF2 couples the exonuclease activity of Apollo to protect telomere during fork progression. Third, exonuclease activity of Apollo, which is required for the telomere protection, is directly regulated by TRF2. These data are consistent with a new model of telomere protection in with TRF2 couples the exonuclease activity of Apollo to replication in order to eliminate clastogenic and recombinogenic structures. The work in my thesis suggest that replicative senescence in human cells may not only be caused by loss of the terminal cap integrity but also by replication-linked DNA breakages and recombinations within the inner part of telomeres.

Abstract:
The thesis discusses the new understandings of lunar seismology obtained from the re-analyses of Apollo seismic data. Three topics will be discussed. First is the seismic use of Apollo 17 Lunar Surface Gravimeter Data. I reanalyzed the gravimeter data in and showed that we can obtain seismic information from the data. Using this additional data, I succeeded in identifying new farside deep moonquake and evaluating the observation bias of the Apollo seismic network. Second are the spectral analyses of moonquakes. By using both long and short period seismometer I succeeded in expanding the usable frequency range of the seismic spectra and enabled more detailed investigation of source mechanisms of moonquakes. From the investigation, I found that stress drop of deep moonquakes is -0. 1 MPa considering the effect of scattered energy into the coda. This is comparable with the stress variation caused by the tidal stress acting on the Moon and my result supports the model of tidally oriented deep moonquakes. Finally, I examined the spatial distribution of impact events and bombardment history on the Moon. I used the seismically identified meteorite impacts, which cover much smaller scale impacts compared to previous studies, and examined the cratering asymmetry on the Moon. From the close investigation, I found that the cratering asymmetry exists on the Moon for small meter size craters. In ail cases, I showed that Apollo seismic data is still an important piece of information and at the same time, additional data and observations are desired for more detailed discussion of the nature of lunar seismic events

Abstract:

Bakgrund:

Keyser, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth Keyser. "Allies and Anomalies: The Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/624096.

Full text
Abstract:
The sanctuary of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai has many unusual aspects, including the north-south orientation and the inclusion of a side door in both the Archaic and Classical temples, as well as the lack of evidence for the presence of an altar at the site. The anomalies of the Classical temple have been investigated by many scholars, but few have taken into account its Archaic predecessor. Because it is clear that the architect of the Classical temple intentionally replicated the plan of the Archaic temple, any attempt at understanding these anomalies must begin with an investigation of the earlier temple. These anomalies must also be examined within the context of the ongoing Messenian Wars in which the Arkadians, and the Phigaleians specifically, acted as allies to the Messenians in the face of Spartan aggression. Because the city of Phigaleia maintained the sanctuary at Bassai, this participation in the Messenian Wars as mercenaries impacted the development of the sanctuary. The Messenian Wars encouraged the development of a mercenary identity for the Phigaleians and for all Arkadians. This mercenary Arkadian identity is highlighted at the sanctuary and seems to have prompted the architects of the Archaic temple at Bassai to create a connection between Bassai, located at the extreme border of ancient Arkadia, and the religious heart of Arkadia, the sanctuary of Zeus at Mt. Lykaion to the east. This connection with the east provides a clear explanation for the architectural anomalies at the site, as these anomalies allow for the best view to the east. Additionally, the close connection between Bassai and Mt. Lykaion may provide an explanation for the lack of an altar at Bassai, as the ash altar to Zeus can easily be seen from the sanctuary of Apollo. Therefore, the importance of Arkadian identity that was developed during the Messenian Wars influenced the architects of the Archaic and Classical temples to place emphasis on the view to the east, explaining the many anomalies at the sanctuary.

Abstract:
This paper is focused on the study of Apollo in the region of Boeotia, mainly considered on the basis of epigraphic evidences. A catalog of the votive texts of the god was therefore composed, each examined individually in an analytical card including a comment on the main aspects of the inscription, not only textual and palaeographic, but also prosopographic, historical, onomastic and literary. The choice to investigate the sphere of votive materials occurs from the extreme curiosity this category produces, more generally the sphere of cultic practices, of which the ex-voto are a tangible expression. The research is arranged in five chapters and a final photographic and graphic catalog. The first two includes an inspection of the literary and archaeological aspect relating to the poleis in which the cult of Apollo is attested. The central sections, third and fourth, contains the first a reflection on the boeotic koinon and its history, included here not only because it was the holder of some dedications to Apollo, but also to define the relationship between the political sphere and the sacred one and all the attempts of manipulation of the one over the other; the fourth chapter is, above all, statistical and focuses on the study of the supports, their physical characteristics and those of the votive forms. The final section consists of epigraphic cards. The intersection of all this information allows, as a final result, to establish not only the regional and extra-regional flows of attendance at the Boeotic sanctuaries, but also to reconstruct the political stability between the poleis. Finally, the typological examination of the votives and the forms of the texts enable us to understand the ritual apparatus of the religious contexts and to infer details about the cult of the Apollo and the ceremonial practices associated with it.

Abstract:
The poetics of everyday life of the Russian author Anton Cechov has fascinated the readers worldwide since more than a century. This fascination is based – not least – on the Greek myth, a cultural heritage, which has deeply influenced the ways of thinking of our society. The antique divinities and heroes as Apollo, Dionysos, Pythia, Narziss become people of everyday life in Cechov´s less examined early work. This projection is a parody-like and travesty-like modification of the mythical elementary structures. In this fusion of the myth with everyday life, Cechov becomes a successor of particularly the antique dramatist Epicharm. Methodically, my analysis bases on both the terms of “re-applying speech” and “consuming speech” of the rhetorician Heinrich Lausberg: Cechov tells the prominent myths in such a way, that they do lose their dignity, however, keep their fundamental power and so enrich the self-perception of modern people.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis consists of a detailed commentary on the Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo, and prolegomena. The subjects treated in the prolegomena are: (i) the structure of hymns, and of the Homeric Hymns in particular, with a discussion of the context in which the Hymns were performed, concluding that they were probably performed at festivals as preludes to recitations of epic poetry; (ii) the narrative techniques of the Hymns, comparing them to Homer; (iii) the treatment of the gods in the Hymns, discussing the ways the gods are presented in the narratives, and the similarities to and differences from the depiction of the gods in Homer; (iv) the portrayal of Apollo and Delos in DAp, discussing the problems of depicting a god in literature, and the relationship between the myth told in the hymn and Delian cult; (v) the language of the hymn, discussing the history of studies of the Hymns' language, examples of un homeric usage and the relationship of the Hymns to Homer and Hesiod; (vi) the question of whether the hymn was orally composed, discussing the various criteria that have been used to attempt to determine this, and concluding that oral composition cannot be proved but is very likely; (vii) the problem of the hymn's unity, or lack of it, discussing the history of the various theories and concluding that the hymn is not an original unity, and that the Delian hymn was composed as an addition to the pre-existing Pythian hymn; (viii) the date of DAp, concluding that it may have been composed in the second half of the sixth century, possibly for a festival held by Polycrates in 523/2 B.C. The commentary deals with linguistic and literary points, and any religious, historical or geographical issues that are raised by particular passages.

Abstract:
The main objectives of this study are to determine how various physical and chemical properties of geologic samples can be investigated by Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectral analyses, and determine how each of these individual properties uniquely alter the mid-infrared spectrum. Of particular interest is how extraterrestrial samples differ (spectrally) from terrestrial samples, and how such findings can be applied to current and future missions to airless planetary bodies (such as Diviner Lunar Radiometer, aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the Mercury Thermal Radiometer on BepiColombo). As such, a range of geological samples have been analysed including terrestrial rocks (anorthosite, granite, grabbro etc.), mineral standards (common rock-forming minerals), lunar meteorites (from Miller Range, Antarctica), and Apollo 14, 15, and 16 soils. A new technique to analyse such samples has been developed and implemented as part of this study: FTIR spectral imaging of unconsolidated samples (powders and soils) to obtain modal mineralogy estimates. Such estimates are comparable to QEMSCAN analyses and spot point counting of the same samples. This is particularly relevant for the non-destructive analysis of Apollo soil samples (bulk and sieved fractions). Individual spectra of polished terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples have been obtained in preparation for the creation of a spectral database. Such samples also have coupled chemical composition information via Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA). To have a spectrum and an associated chemical composition for each mineral in a database is unique compared to other spectral databases. Analyses of lunar meteorites resulted in an understanding of how shock (caused by hypervelocity impacts) alters the physical and spectral properties of lunar minerals. FTIR microscopy of individual minerals and phases in the meteorites were coupled with optical and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging to identify the level of shock obtained by each mineral and phase. The FTIR reflectance bands of plagioclase merge with increasing shock pressure until a single, low-reflectance broad peak is displayed by the most highly shocked plagioclase (>45 GPa), and a dark-red colour is present in CL images. FTIR and QEMSCAN analyses of Apollo regolith samples have provided an understanding of the spectral effects of bulk mineralogy, maturity (a measure of the time spent at the lunar surface), grain size, and mineral chemistry. Using such information, the modal mineralogy of each sample has been estimated, one of which had not previously been analysed for its modal mineralogy. Samples from the same Apollo missions present similar spectral features, meaning FTIR spectroscopy can be used to identify the origin of lunar soils. A weak correlation in maturity with a spectral feature termed the Christiansen Feature has been found for lunar samples. Related to maturity, FTIR spectra of individual agglutinates (a product of space weathering) have been obtained and the spectral properties of agglutinates (decreased %Reflectance values of the region sensitive to geological materials) resemble those of highly mature lunar soils.

Kaminski, Amy Paige. "Sharing the Shuttle with America: NASA and Public Engagement after Apollo." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/79365.

Full text
Abstract:
Historical accounts depict NASA's interactions with American citizens beyond government agencies and aerospace firms since the 1950s and 1960s as efforts to 'sell' its human space flight initiatives and to position external publics as would-be observers, consumers, and supporters of such activities. Characterizing citizens solely as celebrants of NASA's successes, however, masks the myriad publics, engagement modes, and influences that comprised NASA's efforts to forge connections between human space flight and citizens after Apollo 11 culminated. While corroborating the premise that NASA constantly seeks public and political approval for its costly human space programs, I argue that maintaining legitimacy in light of shifting social attitudes, political priorities, and divided interest in space flight required NASA to reconsider how to serve and engage external publics vis-à-vis its next major human space program, the Space Shuttle. Adopting a sociotechnical imaginary featuring the Shuttle as a versatile technology that promised something for everyone, NASA sought to engage citizens with the Shuttle in ways appealing to their varied, expressed interests and became dependent on some publics' direct involvement to render the vehicle viable economically, socially, and politically. NASA's ability and willingness to democratize the Shuttle proved difficult to sustain, however, as concerns evolved following the Challenger accident among NASA personnel, political officials, and external publics about the Shuttle's purpose, value, safety, and propriety. Mapping the publics and engagement modes NASA regarded as crucial to the Shuttle's legitimacy, this case study exposes the visions of public accountability and other influences -- including changing perceptions of a technology -- that can govern how technoscientific institutions perceive and engage various external publics. Doing so illuminates the prospects and challenges associated with democratizing decisions and uses for space and, perhaps, other technologies managed by U.S. government agencies while suggesting a new pathway for scholarly inquiry regarding interactions between technoscientific institutions and external publics. Expanding NASA's historical narrative, this study demonstrates that entities not typically recognized as space program contributors played significant roles in shaping the Shuttle program, substantively and culturally. Conceptualizing and valuing external publics in these ways may prove key for NASA to sustain human space flight going forward.

Full text
Abstract:
Using African American newspapers, this study examines the consensual opinion of articles and editorials regarding two events associated with the space race. One event is the Soviet launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957. The second is the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969. Space Race investigates how two scientific accomplishments achieved during the Cold War and the civil rights movement stimulated debate within the newspapers, and that ultimately centered around two questions: why the Soviets were successful in launching a satellite before the US, and what benefits could come from landing on the moon. Anti-intellectualism, inferior public schools, and a lack of commitment on the part of the US government are arguments offered for analysis by black writers in the two years studied. This topic involves the social conditions of African Americans living within the United States during an era when major civil rights objectives were achieved. Also included are considerations of how living in a "space age" contributed to thoughts about civil rights, as African Americans were now living during a period in which science fiction was becoming reality. In addition, this thesis examines how two scientific accomplishments achieved during this time affected ideas about education, science, and living conditions in the U.S. that were debated by black writers and editors, and subsequently circulated for readers to ponder and debate. This paper argues that black newspapers viewed Sputnik as constituting evidence for an inferior US public school system, contrasted with the Soviet system. Due to segregation between the races and anti-intellectual antecedents in America, black newspapers believed that African Americans were an "untapped resource" that could aid in the Cold War if their brains were utilized. The Apollo moon landing was greeted with enthusiasm because of the universal wonder at landing on the moon itself and the prowess demonstrated by the collective commitment and organization necessary to achieve such an objective by decades end. However, consistently accompanying this adulation is disappointment that domestic problems were not given the same type of funding or national commitment.

Abstract:
Delphi, one of the best known sanctuaries of the ancient world, has been studied in many different ways, especially with a specific attention to the cult of Apollo, the Oracle, the Panhellenic Games. The studies about the “other gods” of the sanctuary are, today, sporadic and dated. The present work has a double purpose. At first, we want to collect the sources proving the presence of the extra Apollonian cults at Delphi, considering archeological, epigraphical and literary sources. Following, we want to propose a religious-historical interpretation of the gods analized, underlining their role and value into the greek polytheism. The multi-disciplinary method, anchored in the concrete data, let us going beyond the source's informations and consider the meaning of the greek holy sphere, of what was proper, with the intermediation of myth and ritual, of the greek way to think about the world.

Abstract:

The travel agencies exist on a market that is distinguished by increasing competition. A majority of the travel agencies offer different services that all satisfie the same customer need. However,

one major difference in the market aspect is the service quality, this making it an important mean of competition. There are several acknowledged methods of measurement when it comes to service quality and it is important to use an instrument that takes into consideration the fact that charter tours is a complex merger of several services. The purpose of this essay is to establish if the SERVQUAL method is a suitable instrument for measuring service quality in the travel

industry. This study is a thorough analysis and evaluation of what Apollo’s customers think about the service quality of Apollo as well as how they perceive that Apollo fulfils their travelling

expectations. Moreover, the essay will examine which factors affect travellers’ experiences of the service quality on charter tours. The study has an objective outlook and the authors have applied a deductive approach. The authors have performed a quantitative study on 70 of Apollo’s customers. The aforementioned study was carried out using a questionnaire that was based on the

SERVQUAL method and the theories that were used in the theoretical part of that study.

The result show that the SERVQUAL method only considered the aspects that involve the travel agency and did not consider the other aspects that affect the traveller’s overall experience of the

service quality. In conclusion this study determines that the SERVQUAL method is not a suitable instrument for measuring service quality on charter tours in the travel industry.

Lange, Carsten Hjort. "Res publica constituta : Actium, Apollo and the accomplishment of the triumviral assignment." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10452/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will focus on the battle of Actium and the ways in which the Caesarian regime represented and commemorated this conflict and turned it to Octavian/Augustus's purpose. It will be argued that Actium was relatively more important than Alexandria in the ideology of the regime, but at the same time that the two battles must be understood together, as part of the accomplishment of the assignment of the triumvirate (constituting the res publica to order and ending the civil war). The focus will thus be on the period between 43-27 BC. It will be suggested that the powers given back to the Senate and Roman people in 27 BC were in fact the powers of the triumvirate. The arrangements of 28-27 BC thus constitute the accomplishment of the triumviral assignment. It will be stressed that, according to the regime, Apollo had a major role to play in this development, helping Octavian to win the battle of Actium. There are many possible themes that could have been exploited, but the nexus of Actium, Apollo, civil war and peace all centre round the triumvirate and triumviral assignment. There is a generally held consensus amongst scholars that Actium was presented as a foreign war and that Octavian/Augustus tried to conceal that it was in fact a civil war. This thesis will reflect on the issue and challenge this consensus. Antonius decided to make war on his own country and thus a foreign war turned into a civil war. Similarly, it is more or less universally held that the battle of Actium was decided due to a prearranged battle plan by Antonius and Cleopatra; from the outset they wanted to flee. Instead it will be argued that it is much more likely that the battle was decided by Cleopatra's treachery.

This dissertation examines the distinctive and critical role that space exploration played in American foreign relations and national image making in the 1960s. Proposed by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, Project Apollo was established, in large part, as a means of demonstrating American power and promoting technocratic values in an international landscape defined by the Cold War, the collapse of colonialism, and the emergence of newly independent nations. While existing scholarship has gestured to this geopolitical context, it has tended to examine activity that takes place on American or lunar soil. This dissertation argues that the geopolitical context was not simply a backdrop but instead the main theater of Project Apollo. By embedding this familiar story back in its global context, this dissertation reinterprets the established narrative of Project Apollo in three significant ways. First, it places greater emphasis on the international stage and the relationship between the US and the world. Second, while the role of the Executive Branch remains essential to this story, this dissertation shifts the focus from engineers and managers, to key actors within the State Department and United States Information Agency, as well as foreign leaders and the world public. Finally, the role of Project Apollo in foreign relations, and public diplomacy in particular, becomes the defining feature of this investigation. By examining how US government elites promoted and disseminated information about space exploration to support American foreign relations interests, this dissertation offers a lens onto attempts to establish national power by fusing perceived values and strengths of science and technology- like rationality and progress- with the image of the nation's political system. These efforts, this dissertation demonstrates, were not only aimed at boosting American prestige, but were also strategic attempts to promote an idea of global unity and progress ushered in by American scientific and technological leadership.

Abstract:
The lunar regolith is sensitive to the bombardment history of the Moon and contains a wealth of knowledge regarding the types of processes that have modified the lunar crust through time. Noble gases that are produced and trapped in the lunar regolith, as a result of this interaction with the space environment, can be used to determine the cosmic ray exposure age, maturity, shielding depth and antiquity age of lunar regolith samples. This thesis aims to probe this temporal archive to further understand the impact history of the Moon contained within the regolith. Initially, all the published noble gas literature data for the Apollo regolith breccias, drill cores and soils was compiled into a database where trapped and cosmogenic noble gas component were calculated. These data were used to summarise the history of the lunar regolith contained in the Apollo sample archive. A dichotomy between the "ancient" (determined by the antiquity indicator using the 40Ar/36Artr ratio) regolith samples and those formed in more recent times has been described previously (e.g., McKay et al., 1986).The ancient breccias and soils (>~3.5 Ga) have typically experienced limited amounts of surface exposure (i.e., they are 'immature'). Whereas, regolith samples formed in more recent times ( < 3.5 Ga, << 2 Ga) show a range of maturities. It is likely that the difference in maturity between the ancient and younger breccias reflects the changing collisional conditions of the time i.e., impact flux and regolith turnover rates. Here, 12 lunar meteorite regolith breccias were analysed for their noble gas content (Ne, Ar, Xe isotopes) to determine if lunar meteorites show the same difference between (40Ar/36Ar)tr ratio and maturity. Lunar meteorites in this study and previously published data do show the same negative correlation between (40Ar/36Ar)tr ratio and maturity. Furthermore, many of the lunar meteorite samples have (40Ar/36Ar)tr ratio between 1 and 2.5 indicating antiquity ages of approximately 1-2 Ga. This potentially reflects a declining period of random intermediate impacts bracketing the period between the 'ancient' and 'recent' samples. The same techniques were applied to newly discovered lunar meteorite MIL 13317. This included a full petrology description, mineral chemistry, U-Pb and Pb-Pb ages, and analysis of noble gas content to decipher the regolith history of this new sample. The meteorite is a mixture of mare and highland components (including mare basalts, FAN, Mg-suite and KREEP) with ancient ages (~ 4.3Ga) and a complex regolith history (exposure age ~500 to 800 Ma, antiquity age ~1.92 Ga). MIL 13317 is an important addition to the lunar collection as it contains material from previously unsampled areas of the Moon which is interpreted here to be associated with the northern regions of the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. Work was also begun on Apollo 16 regolith breccias using the same analytical techniques. However, due to instrument issues and friable samples much of the work was not completed and will be continued after the PhD. Understanding the data collected here and the techniques used will feed forward to future missions to the Moon to understand noble gas concentrations in the lunar regolith.

Abstract:
In 1832, fishermen pulled a full-body bronze sculpture of a youth, now called the Piombino Apollo, from the sea near ancient Populonia. Under life-size, the piece resembles an Archaic kouros, though it has some notable unusual features including an inscription dedicating the supposed image of Apollo to Athena and the signatures of two artists found on a lead tablet hidden within the hollow bronze. These unusual features led scholars to eventually reclassify the piece from an Archaic work of the fifth century to an Archaistic forgery of the second or first century. Few have challenged this reclassification, but this thesis attempts to complicate the application of the word forgery to the Piombino Apollo. Further, it examines whether a contemporary buyer would have been fooled by the sculpture’s “deceptive” traits and offers alternative possibilities to account for the artists’ choices of style, pose, and inscriptions.

Abstract:
The human SNM1A and SNM1B enzymes are 5'-3' exonucleases implicated in DNA interstrand crosslink (ICL) repair. Cells deficient in SNM1A or SNM1B show increased sensitivity to clinically important crosslinking drugs such as mitomycin C (MMC). Moreover, purified SNM1A and SNM1B have been shown to resect cross-linked DNA past the site of cross-links. Consequently, inhibitors of these enzymes may be useful in potentiating the effects of ICL agents in cancer chemotherapy. Since key residues at the active sites of SNM1A and SNM1B are conserved with those on bacterial metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), compounds that inhibit bacterial MBLs were included in a screen for inhibitors of SNM1A and SNM1B. A real-time fluorescence assay was developed for a high-throughput screen for inhibitors of SNM1A/B. It produced 22 hit compounds with 4 different scaffolds. Since these compounds are either the natural substrates of MBLs or mimics of these substrates, it is not surprising that most of these compounds are reversible competitive inhibitors of hSNM1A and SNM1B. Crystal structures of SNM1A and SNM1B were solved and they show that, while their active sites are near-identical, the charges on the surface of these proteins were very different. Biochemical studies of the putative DNA binding groove identified amino acid residues that could be involved in DNA binding. Therefore, this current study helps elucidate the structural properties of SNM1A and SNM1B, and show that inhibitors to these enzymes can be developed and potentially sensitise cancer cells to ICL-inducing chemotherapeutics.

Abstract:
It is admitted that the Moon used to have a magnetic field, generated by an internal dynamo. However, the mechanisms responsible for the dynamo and its preservation are still poorly known today. The lifetime of the magnetic field is also debated. My thesis was focused first on the magnetic characterization (natural magnetization and magnetic susceptibility) of a large part of the Apollo collection, with the study of 161 Apollo rocks. I used the ratio of the natural magnetization to the magnetic susceptibility to obtain an approximate indicator of paleointensity. Results of this ratio were coherent with the two major epochs determined in the lunar magnetic field (high field epoch before ~3.5 Ga and a weak field epoch after) and allowed me to select samples for detailed paleomagnetic analyses in another part of my thesis. Then, I studied in laboratory the natural magnetization of 25 Apollo samples and 2 lunar meteorites. Different methods were used to obtain 8 paleointensities values (between 1 and 47 µT) and 7 upper limits of paleointensity (< 30 µT).These data were coupled with radiometric ages to trace the evolution of the lunar surface field over time. These results corroborate the existence of a strong field epoch (4-3.5 Ga) and extend this epoch until ~3 Ga. Paleointensities of values > 1 µT obtained until 0.1 Ga indicates a very late interruption of the dynamo. Weak paleointensities were obtained in the high field epoch, suggesting a value of average field lower than previously proposed in literature. This study allows to better constrain the temporal evolution of the lunar magnetic field

This study aims to study how individuals' attitudes to the new travel trend fitness journeys, with basis in gender and society's expectations. The study is about how Apollo and Ving’smarket looks for the segment fitness trips, but also how these two agencies can broaden it’s audience and attract the younger crowd who are individuals aged 30 years and younger. The study has a gender perspective, and therefore it is of interest to write about how women's and men's perception of fitness trips are different. The study is based on two methods, qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative approach is an interview form that was sent out through e-mail to Jenny Tägtström at Apollo who works as a sales-and marketing Co-ordinator and Magdalena Öhrn at Ving with the position as a communication manager. The quantitative method was designed as a questionnaire sent out through Facebook in different training groups, a total of 301 responses were submitted. The responses have been analyzed and reconnected with the theories that was further on used in the study. The theories that the study related to is stereotypes theory, escape seeking dichotomy, gender theoryabout the different gender rolesandidentity building theory. The study presents that it ́s manly the gender women who contribute in this kind of trips in a greater extent then men. The gender plays a big role when it comes to choose a fitness trip or not but also in the everyday society. The result also shows that there is room for Apollo and Ving to review their marketing as they currently do to them self-market themselves to a larger target group then they actually do but they miss the younger potential consumers which is individuals aged 30 years and younger

The history of Sparta sometimes was presented in Athenocentric perspective, which considered Sparta as a rustic society, with static economy and culture, leaning only military activities. However, our research has shown that policies and cultural practices of the citizens of Sparta were dynamic for his time. Following in this way, we find that the representations of Sparta, especially the spartiates and its basileis, ranged according to the historical and social context. Thus, we observe that although the citizens of Sparta were criticized by some ancient thinkers, this wasnt a hegemonic tendency. Upon the evidence of Classical literary documentation, we note that the spartiates and their basileis were men endowed with a traditional habitus, which valued the physical and mental improvement, but also the responsibility to the sacred duties. Through interaction between documentary traces and historiographical studies we charted part of Sparta that figured the discourses throughout the history of the West, in order to materialize the possible political and cultural motivations in the appropriations of Spartans habitus. Therefore, we refer to literary documentation to understand as part of classical thinkers conceived the formation of Lacedaemon region and the polis of Sparta, which would have given concomitantly with the cultural and political legitimation of ethnic identity of the basileus and the spartiates. Finally, we analyze the rituals practices in honor of the god Apollo as a mechanism employed to ratify the political power of hegemonic social segments of Lacedaemon against the subjected social groups.

Abstract:
Augustan propaganda surrounding Apollo provided the perfect literary device through which Augustan poets could express their sentiments about the new regime. Augustus transformed Apollo from a relatively insignificant god in the Roman pantheon to his own multi-faceted god whose various attributes were meant to legitimize his new position within the Roman Empire. In this thesis I discuss how Ovid uses Augustus’ political affiliation with Apollo to comment on Augustan marriage legislation in two of his texts. In Ovid’s manual on seduction, the Ars Amatoria, he denies poetic inspiration from Apollo at the beginning of his work, preferring instead to draw from his own experiences. However, Ovid seemingly contradicts himself by having Apollo appear later on to offer him advice. In his Metamorphoses, Ovid ridicules Apollo’s failed pursuit of Daphne. However, Apollo is seemingly victorious after all, since he uses Daphne’s laurel as his perpetual victory symbol. In both these instances, Ovid veils his political commentary by initially ridiculing Apollo in matters of love, only to seemingly glorify him shortly after. By excluding Apollo from matters of love, Ovid indirectly is disapproving of Augustus’ involvement in social affairs in Rome. Ovid proves to be a master of language yet again as he plays with the literary tradition and political implication of Apollo in these two texts to convey his discontent regarding Augustan marriage legislation.

Abstract:
Drawing extensively from empirical research into British film fan magazines such as Picture Show and Picturegoer, this thesis demonstrates how such secondary media were crucial in shaping Novello's star persona and the ways in which nuanced references to Art History, Philosophy and Classical Greek iconography and myths informed his iconography. Juxtaposing such eclectic influences with textual analysis of his films themselves, I argue that Novello's most singular stardom in the twenties -- an extension of the fame he achieved through his composition of one of defining songs of the war, `Keep the Home Fires Burning' -- is founded on a historically specific and, in the broadest sense, queer appeal to the disparate elements of his mass audience. This appeal, I demonstrate, engages with a range of contemporary discourses around nostalgia, sexuality and the symptoms of war-trauma. I argue that in the films of Ivor Novello we apprehend an essentially modern, quite paradoxical and sometimes disturbing product of his time, rather than the anachronistic, histrionic figure presented thus far by critics.

Poston, Michael Joseph. "Thermal and non-thermal processes involving water on Apollo lunar samples and metal oxide powders." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52223.

Full text
Abstract:
Water is of interest for understanding the formation history and habitability of past and present solar system environments. It also has potential as a resource - when split to its constituent oxygen and hydrogen - both in space and on the Earth. Determining the sources, evolution, and eventual fate of water on bodies easily reachable from Earth, especially Earth's moon, is thus of high scientific and exploration value to the private sector and government space agencies. Understanding how to efficiently split water with solar energy has potential to launch a hydrogen economy here on Earth and to power spacecraft more sustainably to far away destinations. To address the fundamental interactions of water with important surfaces relevant to space exploration and technology development, temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and water photolysis experiments under well controlled adsorbate coverages have been carried out and are described in detail in this thesis. TPD experiments under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions were conducted on lunar surrogate materials and genuine lunar samples brought to Earth by the Apollo program. The TPD's were conducted to determine the desorption activation energies of water chemisorbed directly to the powder surfaces, knowledge of which can improve existing models of water evolution on Earth's moon and aid in interpreting data collected by spacecraft-based investigations at the Moon. The TPD experiments of molecular water interacting with two lunar surrogates (micronized JSC-1A and albite) in ultra-high vacuum revealed water desorption during initial heating to 750 K under ultra-high vacuum. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) indicated possible water formation during the initial heating via recombinative desorption of native hydroxyls above 425 ± 25K. Dissociative chemisorption of water (i.e., formation of surface hydroxyl sites) was not observed on laboratory time scales after controlled dosing of samples (initially heated above 750 K) with 0.2 - 500 L exposures of water. However, pre-heated samples of both types of surrogates were found to have a distribution of molecular water chemisorption sites, with albite having at least twice as many as the JSC-1A samples by mass. A fit to the TPD data yields a distribution function of desorption activation energies ranging from ~0.45 eV to 1.2 eV. Using the fitted distribution function as an initial condition, the TPD process was simulated on the timescale of a lunation. A preview of these results and their context was published in Icarus (2011) 213, 64, doi: 10.1016/j.icarus.2011.02.015 by lead author Charles Hibbitts and the full treatment of the results from the TPD on lunar surrogates (presented here in Chapter 2) has been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research – Planets (2013) 118, 105, doi: 10.1002/jgre.20025 by lead author Michael J Poston. The desorption activation energies for water molecules chemisorbed to Apollo lunar samples 72501 and 12001 were determined by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments in ultra-high vacuum. A significant difference in both the energies and abundance of chemisorption sites was observed, with 72501 retaining up to 40 times more water (by mass) and with much stronger interactions, possibly approaching 1.5 eV. The dramatic difference between the samples may be due to differences in mineralogy, surface exposure age, and contamination of sample 12001 with oxygen and water vapor before it arrived at the lunar sample storage facility. The distribution function of water desorption activation energies for sample 72501 was used as an initial condition to mathematically simulate a TPD experiment with the temperature program matching the lunar day. The full treatment of the TPD results from these two lunar samples (presented here in Chapter 3) has been submitted with the title "Water chemisorption interactions with Apollo lunar samples 72501 and 12001 by ultra-high vacuum temperature programmed desorption experiments" to Icarus for publication in the special issue on lunar volatiles by lead author Michael J Poston. A new ultra-high vacuum system (described in Chapter 4) was designed and constructed for planned experiments examining the possible formation of hydrated species, including water, from interaction of solar wind hydrogen with oxygen in the lunar regolith and to examine the effects of the active radiation environment on water adsorption and desorption behavior on lunar materials. This system has been designed in close collaboration with Dr. Chris J Bennett. An examination of a unique system for water photolysis - zirconia nanoparticles for hydrogen production from water with ultra-violet photons - was performed to better understand the mechanism and efficiency of water splitting on this catalyst. Specifically, formation of H₂ from photolysis of water adsorbed on zirconia (ZrO₂) nanoparticles using 254 nm (4.9 eV) and 185 nm (6.7 eV) photon irradiation was examined. The H₂ yield was approximately an order of magnitude higher using monoclinic versus cubic phase nanoparticles. For monoclinic particles containing 2 monolayers (ML) of water, the maximum H₂ production rate was ~0.4 µmole hr⁻¹ m⁻² using 185 + 254 nm excitation and a factor of 10 lower using only 254 nm. UV reflectance reveals that monoclinic nanoparticles contain fewer defects than cubic nanoparticles. A H₂O coverage dependence study of the H₂ yield is best fit by a sum of interactions involving at least two types of adsorbate-surface complexes. The first dominates up to ~0.06 ML and is attributed to H₂O chemisorbed at surface defect sites. The second dominates at coverages up to a bilayer. H₂ formation is maximum within this bilayer and likely results from efficient energy transfer from the particle to the interface. Energy transfer is more efficient for the monoclinic ZrO₂ nanoparticles and likely involves mobile excitons. These results (presented in Chapter 5) have been submitted with the title "UV Photon-Induced Water Decomposition on Zirconia Nanoparticles" for publication in the Journal of Physical Chemistry C by lead author Michael J Poston. This paper has been reviewed and will be accepted after minor modification.

Abstract:
From the end of the 4th century AC, the sanctuary of Apollo in Delos took in a Pythion, a building consecrated to the Delphian Apollo, known in the account of the Delian hieropes as Pythion, or "naos with the three statues". The repeated mentions of this name in the Delian inscriptions, as well as the expenses involved in various restoration works or alterations, bear witness to the importance of the building. We know that it possessed a lantern and sheltered three statues, a palm tree and an hearth that burned continuously. Its location, linked to the one of the Altar of Horns, was a issue for a long time, but it seems probable now that the Keraton is certainly identified : the Pythion could correspond to the ionic edifice built by the Athenians in the 4th century AC, which remains can be seen North-West of the plain of Apollo's Hieron, between the Artemision to the North and the Keraton to the South. The correspondance between the ionic building and the Pythion is based on the study of the ruins, from a purely architural point of view, then on the exam of the epigraphic sources, in such a way that we put to the test the contributions from the texts and the architectural study, before proposing a synthesis on the architecture and the history of the Pythion
