Abstract:
A drachm struck late in the 1st century BC at Apollonia in Illyria testifies to the survival there of a branch of the Bacchids, a family first prominent at Corinth over half a millennium earlier. The origins of the Corinthian Bacchids are mythic. They claimed descent from Herakles, whose family, the Heracleids, was supposedly exiled from Greece after his death and returned in force some generations later. Earlier classicists equated the return of the Heracleids with the invasion of speakers of the Dorian Greek dialect; today even the reality of the Dorian invasion is vigorously contested.

Abstract:
Discussion of three specimens of the denarius type RIC Nerva 32. One of them, kept in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, is overstruck on a pre-imperial denarius of the type RRC 445/2, issued in Apollonia in Illyria; the two other coins seem to have been overstruck on Republican denarii, too, although it is impossible to pinpoint their undertypes with certainty. These coins, whose reverse typology is contextualised exhaustively in the present paper, are not ancient, but an early modern creation. The type's first attestation goes back to the seond edition of Adolf Occo's work on Roman imperial coins, published in 1601.

Abstract:
This paper offers a full description of the koinon hellenikon nomisma of the Hellenistic period and of almost all other coinages of the same period. The koinon hellenikon nomisma was issued on the Attic standard, while all other coinages were struck with different standards: Milesian, Aeginetan and reduced Aeginetan, Corinthian, Corcyrean, Persian, Nesiotic, Chian, the standard of Rhodes, that of the cities of Apollonia and Dyrrachium in Illyria, and of the kistophoroi. The use of these different standards pointed to previous monetary backgrounds of the cities and koina in question. It aimed, as was the case during the Archaic and the Classical periods, mainly to create different monetary zones, thus revealing, through the local circulation of coinages struck on the same standard, a sort of regional unity. This was not the case of the many Attic weight standard coinages. Alexanders, Antigonid, Seleucid, Attalid and other royal coinages, as well as coinages of cities minted with civic types and on the Attic standard, could circulate all around the vast Hellenistic world. The choice of kings and cities to mint on this standard and hoard evidence reveal that this was in fact the koinon hellenikon nomisma of the period. Epigraphic evidence supports this view: Alexanders – and other Attic weight coinages – served various military needs such as the payment of siteresia, the repair of walls, the payment of ransom to free prisoners, travel funds for theoroi and ambassadors, money for public subscriptions (epidoseis), and funds for various religious and other obligations. These were the needs that the koinon hellenikon nomisma of the Platonic Laws (742a-e) was supposed to fulfil. Thus, the Attic standard coinages refer to unity, while all others to diversity.

Abstract:
The first Roman troops in the Third Macedonian War to cross the Adriatic were those in the army of propraetor Gnaeus Sicinius. His task was to secure the coastal area around Apollonia, about which Livy writes on several occasions. However, other than Polybius, Livy used various sources, due to which there are contradictions in the information about the size of the army that Sicinius transferred and whether or not he secured a much larger area. The purpose of this article is to examine in detail the available information and provide new insight into how many troops he actually transferred, and whether his securing of the forts of the Dassareti, the Illyrians and the coastal area around Apollonia was done with a significantly larger force than previously believed.

Abstract:
During the 220s and the early 210s, the Antigonid and the Illyrians cooperated politically and militarily more than once: they fought together against Kleomenes of Sparta during the reign of Antigonos Doson and against the Aitolians during the reign of Philip V. The Illyrians proved to be valuable allies for the latter Antigonid because they provided not only well-trained infantry but also offered naval support to the Macedonian campaigns. However, by 211, Philip V had conquered the lands that had belonged to the Ardiaei dynasty of Illyria and controlled the Balkan peninsula from east to west. The only cities that were not under his rule were the Greek cities of the coast: Orikos, Apollonia, and Epidamnos. The Illyrian tribes under the defeated king Skerdilaidas were confined in the north. This study investigates the circumstances that led the Antigonids to go from friends to enemies of the Illyrians. It shows that Philip’s relationship with the Illyrians was initially prompted by his philos, Taurion, who fostered cooperation between Macedonia and the forces of the Ardiaei. However, Demetrios of Pharos’ arrival at the Antigonid court changed the political scene completely. By analyzing Polybius and Justin’s account, the paper highlights the role Demetrios of Pharos played in Illyrian foreign relations with Macedonia and the dramatic impact of his relationship with Philip V on Hellenistic events. Demetrios’ advice to the king on rethinking his military tactics and objectives was conducive to the Macedonian successes in the Social War. However, the real agenda of Demetrios became clear with time: Demetrios hoped to restore his leadership position in the Illyrian basileia as a local ally of Macedonia at the expense of his rival Skerdilaidas, a friend of the Romans. Although Demetrios’ death compromised the project, it brought unwanted Roman attention to Macedonia.

Full text
Abstract:
During the Roman period, “Apollonia of Illyria”, a greek settlement in Albania, knew several phases of construction and development. This is demonstrated by the study of the monumental center which was the object of excavations supervised by a French archaeologist Léon Rey at the beginning of the XXth century. After World War II, Albanian teams pursued the researches. They realized the restorations and the current presentations. The monumental center is organized around two main buildings, the Odeon and the “monument of Agonothetes”. These meeting places give evidence of the public character of this part of the city, just like the existence of a triumphal arch built later on. Shops also prove the commercial function of this place. Then, the religious function is illustrated by an ionic temple surrounded by a portico associated with a building named “prytaneum’ and by a small sanctuary. Finally, a square building is either a library or an “augusteum”. After an analysis of the visible vestiges and documentation, a report on the functions of the various monuments and a presentation of the comparative elements, the hypothesis of reconstructions will be proposed and transposed into computer-generated images. They will be assembled in a global vision of the roman monumental center at the beginning of the third century. Researches concerning the agora, localized a few hundred meters further, are not achieved yet but this place could be an architectural complex dedicated to imperial cult. During the second century, its importance could have attracted the bouleuterion that remains, for the moment, named as “monument of Agonothetes”<br>Kolonia greke e Apolonisë së Ilirisë, në Shqipëri, ka njohur faza të rëndësishme ndërtimi dhe riorganizimi urban në periudhën romake.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chapter 4, “Iphigenia in Illyria: Greek Tragic Women on Comic Stages,” argues that Greek tragic women shaped Shakespeare’s sense of comedy’s affective possibilities in plays including The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night. In the wake of Greek-inspired experiments with tragedy, Shakespeare turned to mediating versions of these tragic icons to explore the resources of female lament for soliciting sympathies in comic settings. Comedy of Errors departs from Plautus by invoking the romance Apollonius of Tyre to heighten its tragic backstory, expand the role of Adriana, and introduce a lost mother; Twelfth Night extends on these same revisions, while also alluding to Heliodorus’ Aethiopica to identify Viola with Greek sacrificial virgins, heightening her links with tragedy and her appeal to audiences’ sympathies.
