Additional risk and protective genetic variants may be present near the APOL1 loci, since earlier age ESKD is observed in some AAs with one APOL1 renal-risk variant, and because the adjacent gene MYH9 is associated with nephropathy in populations lacking G1 and G2 variants. Wherein resides the ‘art’ in the ‘art of building’? Throughout history, architects have generally viewed their field as a craft informed by the human body, a creative sense of play, and technical science. Theory in the second half of the 20 th century departed from this direction by reducing art to the visual and semiotic understanding of form. The remarkable discoveries of the biological sciences in recent decades have opened an entirely new perspective for designers, based on our profound insights into human soci-ality, empathy, emotion, mirror systems, and design’s inherent powers of “tactility and kinesis.” The dictum “know thyself,” once inscribed in stone at the entrance of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, in many ways holds the key to locating the missing ‘art’ of design.

Bradbury’s long association with WED (later Walt Disney Imagineers) resulted in the 1982 opening of EPCOT and the Spaceship Earth geodetic sphere that he had worked on for more than a decade. Chapter 17 describes the milestones of Bradbury’s participation in Spaceship Earth’s ride display, themes, and audio narration, and his opening-day experiences at Disney World. This cross-country trip included rail and automobile mishaps, and Disney executives, including Roy Disney, were able to convince Bradbury to return to Los Angeles by way of his first airline flight. Chapter 17 includes brief context for the Disney Studio filming of his novel Something Wicked This Way Comes.

This final chapter discusses the merits of the project, showing how examining George Balanchine’s earliest ballets allows us a better understanding of his mature works. Comparisons are drawn between his lost ballets and those that are in the repertory: Prodigal Son, Apollo, Serenade, Jewels, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, and others. This conclusion shows the merits of a dance reconstruction project like Funeral March and demonstrates how it enables historians, dance artists, and audiences to gain greater depth in their understanding of ballet as an art form.

Chapter 42 begins with an accounting of the pervasive spread of Bradbury stories through many hundreds of textbooks and anthologies. “Nothing has to die,” Walt Disney had once told him, and the memory of those words helped turn Bradbury back to the best of his long-deferred books, Somewhere a Band Is Playing. It is more mood piece than novel, but it conveys Bradbury’s lifelong search for a place preserved forever out of time. It was paired with Leviathan 99 in a single volume titled Now and Forever (2007). The chapter continues with Bradbury’s Special Lifetime Pulitzer Citation, major awards from foreign nations, the dedication of his Halloween Tree in Disneyland, all tempered by the 2008 passing of his good friend Charlton Heston.

The digitized copy of The Martian Chronicles, along with many other stories, novels, and science fiction art inspired by the Red Planet, finally reached Mars aboard the Phoenix lander in 2008. Chapter 43 describes Bradbury’s final trip to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory the following year, the publication of his last story collection, We’ll Always Have Paris (2008), and the passing of Don Congdon, his agent for more than sixty years. Bradbury had come to measure each story he finished as one more victory over death, but the stories were coming more slowly now. Bradbury’s reflections on mortality during the final decades of his life, and his unfinished plans for a final story collection, close out chapter 43.

Bradbury felt great responsibility for the gift of life, and chapter 44 opens with a survey of his allusions to remembrance in his fiction and unpublished notes. Preserved memories from the distant past ranged from old phonograph records his mother would play for him in the 1920s to remembered color photographs of King Tutankhamen’s golden death mask. The chapter also chronicles his friendship with Carla Laemmle, one of the last silent film actresses; the 2009 radio production of Leviathan 99, Bradbury’s last collaboration with radio legend Norman Corwin; and Bradbury’s gentle decline and death on June 5, 2012. Bradbury’s passing was noticed around the world, prompting reflections on the transmission of his best early work through generations of readers.

During the year after his November 1999 stroke, Bradbury worked with his daughter Alexandra and his HarperCollins editor Jennifer Brehl to pull together a new story collection, One More for the Road (2002). Chapter 37 surveys the reception of this collection and the nearly simultaneous Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. The rest of the chapter centers on Let’s All Kill Constance!, Bradbury’s third and final autobiographical novel. Like the first two, it focuses on an emerging mid-century writer who is based on his own memories of a much younger Ray Bradbury; the new novel continues the young writer’s emerging ability to solve the mysteries that began in Death Is a Lonely Business and continued in A Graveyard for Lunatics.

During summers spent at Glenora he perfects his diving technique but cannot rid himself of his sexual inhibitions. In two searching essays he celebrates Walt Whitman as a sexual healer, learning to reject his mother’s insistence on spiritual purity. Moving in with Crystal, Max becomes interested in woman’s suffrage and helps found the Men’s League for Woman Suffrage in New York. Max becomes a sought-after and well-paid speaker at suffrage events, reinventing himself as a “man suffragette.” Dewey accepts one of Max’s essays on Plato in lieu of a dissertation. This chapter examines the relationship between African America, Latin America, and the Caribbean through the music and its associated performance practices realized on the stage of the Apollo Theater in Harlem from 1934 to the early 2000s. Through the lens of race, nation, and ethnicity, the complex and often tenuous relations among the diverse peoples who colluded and collided on the stage of the Apollo to produce some of the most significant and influential contributions to popular cultural expression in the United States throughout the twentieth century are explored. Though the Apollo is considered one of the most significant and influential venues in the twentieth century for African American music, studying the discourse and historical narratives concerning the theater’s history and traditions reveals that the venue was also one of the most important Caribbean and Latin American stages in the United States during that time. Situated just blocks from one of the most vibrant Caribbean and Latin American neighborhoods in North America, Spanish Harlem or El Barrio, the Apollo Theater was and continues to be a nexus for intercultural exchange between African American, Latin American, and Caribbean musics.

Abstract In ground vibration testing of flexible missiles to determine their in-flight vibration modes, it is desirable that the support stiffness be as small as possible relative to the missile beam stiffness. This paper analyzes the effect of a rotational stiffness applied to one end of a uniform free-free beam. The changes in the natural frequency and node locations for the first two modes are calculated as a function of the support stiffness. The Saturn V Apollo Launch Vehicle is used as a numerical example.
