Abstract:
Abstract This article studies the two earliest witnesses to the Apostles’ Creed which have often been regarded with suspicion because they were written by “heretical” bishop-theologians Marcellus of Ancyra and Priscillian of Avila. Assessing the thought of Marcellus and Priscillian in the light of their authentic treatises, it is contended that their respective understandings of Trinitarian theology cannot be identified with modalist monarchianism. Consequently, their creeds should not be regarded as smoke screen for their allegedly deviant doctrines. Rather, these should be regarded as the fi

AbstractExploring the emergence of creedal statements in Christianity about non-time before creation, called precreation rhetorolect, this essay begins with the baptismal creed called the Roman Symbol and its expansion into the Apostles’ Creed. These early creeds contain wisdom, apocalyptic, and priestly rhetorolect, but no precreation rhetorolect. When the twelve statements in the Apostles’ Creed were expanded into the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, the first three statements added precreation rhetorolect. This article examines the use of the Nicene Creed in the Church of Denmark from 1514 to 1992 when a new Service Book, Den Danske Alterbog, was authorized for use in the Evangelical LutheranChurch of Denmark. The Reformation replaced the Nicene Creed with a Danish hymn, but until 1640 the Latin Nicene Creed was sung in some cases. The Latin text was the same as in the medievalmissals and was printed 1573 in the Gradval edited by Niels Jesperssøn. From 1640 to the 19th century the creed was sung only in the hymnal form. In the 19th century the creed as a hymn graduallydisappeared. In 1949 the Da

Abstract: This article examines the place of the Gospel reading and the Creed in Danish liturgy. In the first centuries after the Reformation, the Gospel was sung from the altar followed by the Creed, normally a Danish hymn. The Gospel was read once more from the pulpit before the sermon. In the 19th century, the Gospel was often only read from the pulpit in connection with the sermon and the Creed gradually disappeared. At the end of the 19th century, a new lectionary was introduced with two years and two different Gospel readings: the first from the altar, the second from the pulpit as the t

The life of the Church from the very beginning is connected with searching for Her own identity which has its expression in the forming of the profession of faith. The testimonies of this fact can be found already in the Old Testament, which is shown in multifarious doctrinal formulas which are handed over by the apostolic proclamation which is based on them. In a relatively short time these formulas were gathered as a whole, first in the profession of faith used during the right of Baptism and later, especially in a profession of faith which is called the Apostles’ Creed. <p> For a variety of reasons, many churches in our cultural moment do not include creeds in their corporate worship. Some associate creeds with the disastrous hubris and overreach of the Modernist church as it attempted to nail down, and be the arbiter of, what is true. Others see them as simply boring and irrelevant relics of a bygone era and style.Yet in their right place, creeds have an important role to play today, framing the story of faith, and declaring the central core of what the local worshipping community holds in common with the church across the ages. A view of the nature of Jesus Christ that rises to the level of full Christian orthodoxy, as expressed in such creeds and definitions as the Apostles’ Creed, and the statements of Nicea, and Chalcedon, cannot be responsibly derived from the New Testament if the constraints of modern historical criticism are obeyed. But robust and faithful views of the nature of Christ may be read from the New Testament, and even from the Old Testament, when the text is interpreted via lenses of creative, Christian interpretation, led by the holy spirit, and interpreted with the guidance of love. Abstract:
The key characteristic of the Orthodox Church, expressed in the Nicene Creed, is that the Church is one, holy, conciliar and apostolic. Although it consists of many local churches, which have their own national characteristics and independent governance, the Orthodox Church is nevertheless one in spirit, faith and equality of power. This goal of this paper is to examine conciliarity as the key principle on the basis of which the Orthodox Church governs itself since its inception, which is based on the Holy Scriptures, the Holy Tradition, the teaching of the holy Apostles, the decisions of the
