There is an increasing demand for the ordination of women as priests within the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican’s primary argument against priestly ordination of women is biblical, appealing to certain historical events, specifically Jesus’ (alleged) choice of male apostles only. Due to the nature of our sources, the historically responsible question should not be whom Jesus appointed as apostles, but who were apostles in first-century Christianity. The twelfth and thirteenth centuries witness a complex appeal to the “age of the apostles,” referring to the first centuries of Christianity as model and foundation. Both the Catholic Church and various apostolic movements claim to be true imitators of the vita apostolica. Baptism in the Corinthian church was an expression of allegiance to honour not only Christ but also the ‘patron’ apostle in whose testimony the convert had believed (1 Cor 1.12–17). Some apostles known to the Corinthians had died (cf. 15.6), yet their testimony lived on and bore fruit in Corinth, resulting in baptism for the honouring of the dead apostles. In the context of 15.20–34 Paul uses this practice to expose the hypocrisy of those who deny the resurrection and yet seek to honour apostles who depend on the resurrection for receiving honour, as do Christ and God the Father.

Abstract:
Slater argues that the dating of John’s Apocalypse has depended on the external witness of Irenaeus, writing over a century later. He begins with the internal evidence and arrives at a date between 68 and 70 CE. For example, he looks at the question of who is or is not an apostle in Rev 2:2. He argues that no one in the 90s was disputing who the apostles were. Rather, the debate was who carried on the apostolic tradition. Furthermore, he argues that this earlier date also helps to understand better some debates within early Christianity.

Abstract:
This article argues that Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany and the sinful woman in Luke 7 should be identified as one and the same, as long held by Christian tradition but recently challenged. Comparison of the four Gospel narratives of Christ's anointing reveals numerous details supporting this identification. Sustained literary motifs also build a consistent characterization. An intriguing story emerges which, far from discrediting Mary from influence or ministry, honours her as a woman called by Christ to be an apostle even to the apostles and an eyewitness to his resurrection and transformat

The “Crucifixion with the twelve Apostles”, a unique Coptic embroidered panel, was on display at the Benaki Museum (Athens, Greece). The representation of the “Crucifixion” with Christ in the center and six Apostles on either side, standing next to each other in frontal poses, is quite a rare one. This rare iconographic image of the twelve Apostles could be linked to the Ascension or the Pentecost. This unique representation of the Crucifixion with the twelve Apostles, which also involves the Ascension, is a one-of-a-kind compositional formula representing Christ’s Death as a triumph over Deat

The article examines the ministry of women surrounding the Savior and the apostles, who did not change their general status, which developed in the Greco-Roman world, although the Gospel opened the way of salvation to humanity in its entirety, equaling women and men. Near Christ women go beyond the prescribed social roles or find new opportunities for their activities. Christ excluded them from the number of the apostles, although they were faithful listeners of His words and took part in the Gospel events. According to the evangelists, when women had devoted their life to «the ministry», they
