Abstract:
In the future, perhaps all styles of computation will coalesce, each compensating for the weaknesses of the others. Humans are wary of intelligence in other species for good reason, for example, Neanderthals. “The Singularity” is when all things change due to exponentially increasing machine intelligence: machines will get more intelligent and start to design themselves, causing an explosive increase in machine intelligence until, “Ultimately, the entire universe will become saturated with our intelligence. This is the destiny of the universe.” Depending on the starting point, there may be many solutions to intelligence in the Singularity, a kind of machine polytheism, but it may be that waiting without commitment and without confining, inaccurate concepts is better. A more likely future is symbiosis, where machines and humans become indispensable to each other.

Glass, Loren. Carole King's Tapestry. Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781501355653.

Abstract:
Carole King’s Tapestry is both an anthemic embodiment of second-wave feminism and an apotheosis of the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter sound and scene. And these two elements of the album’s historic significance are closely related insofar as the professional autonomy of the singer-songwriter is an expression of the freedom and independence women of King’s generation sought as the turbulent sixties came to a close. Aligning King’s own development from girl to woman with the larger shift in the music industry from teen-oriented singles by girl groups to albums by adult-oriented singer-songwriters, this volume situates Tapestry both within King’s original vision as the third in a trilogy (preceded by Now That Everything’s Been Said and Writer) and as a watershed in musical and cultural history, challenging the male dominance of the music and entertainment industries and laying the groundwork for female dominated genres such as women’s music and Riot Grrrl punk.

Abstract:
This monograph focuses on passages of archaic and classical Greek poetry where certain human individuals in certain moments are presented as approximating to the gods. The approximation pursued is different from any form of immortality, be it apotheosis, hero cult, or fame preserved in song. Instead, this monograph is concerned with the momentary attainment of central aspects characteristic of divine life, such as supreme happiness, unsurpassed beauty, or boundless power. The three main chapters of this monograph (Chapters 2, 3, and 4) illustrate the approximation of human figures to these aspects in wedding songs, victory odes, and drama respectively. This monograph also explores the relationship between such approximations and ritual. In some genres, the surrounding ritual context itself seems to engender a vision of someone as more than human, and this vision is reflected also in other media. In contrast, where such visions are not rooted in ritual, they tend to be more problematic and associated with hubris and transgression. What emerges from this study is the impression of a culture where the boundaries between man and god are more flexible than is commonly thought.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the use of the trope of hunger in Lindsey Collen's There is a Tide (1990) and Mutiny (2001) to dispel the myth of Mauritius as a model of paradise that permeates historical, travel, and literary writing. In these texts, the plight of characters debilitated by lack of nourishment, literally and metaphorically, and symbolically consumed by the ravenous, parasitic apotheoses of capitalist market relations points to cannibalism as the ultimate act of domination. Specifically, Collen draws an analogy between the historic slavery that had been the economic basis of the island as a plantation colony, and contemporary economic processes that commodify bodies in the production of consumable goods. In this general scenario of cannibalistic cravings that threaten the autonomy of physical and national bodies, the predicament of the Chagossians (or Chagos Islanders)—forcibly displaced to Mauritius after their island was expropriated and turned into a strategic lynchpin for U.S. military operations in the Middle East and the wider Indian Ocean region—evokes territorial appropriation as spatial cannibalism par excellence. The chapter also highlights the newer forms of cannibal intent that continue to define islands' contact and subsequent negotiations with consumer culture.
