Abstract:
In the twenty-nine articles that constitute the result of the 1960s travel experience in the Soviet Union, which have so far appeared only on the third page of La Stampa, the cultural-literary operation of Guido Piovene is outlined, perfectly reflecting the programmatic intention to conduct a wide-ranging investigation into Soviet society in the early 1960s, providing a useful comparison with the condition of the western world and overcoming the appearance and conventionality of preconceived ideas (by the visitor) and prepackaged information (from part of the Soviet administrative system). Abstract:
This chapter focuses on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in the United Kingdom. It argues that at the levels of both structure and practice, therapists and practitioners frame mindfulness as a method for distinguishing between appearance and reality. Drawing on ethnography from a two-year therapist-training program in MBCT, it is demonstrated that mindfulness and science are understood to produce complementary forms of evidence. Both are framed as protocols for aligning human representation with the ways the world is. This concern to distinguish “appearance” from “reality” also infor

Abstract:
This book aims to explore the aspects of visuality in Greek and Roman culture, comprising the visual appearance of images as well as the reality of the social world. The face-to-face societies of ancient Greece and Rome were to a high degree based on civic presence and direct, immediate social interaction in which visual appearance and experience of beings and things was of paramount importance. The six chapters of the book are dedicated to action in space, memory over time, the appearance of the person, conceptualization of reality, and, finally, presentification and decor as fundamental cate

Abstract:
This chapter describes ‘apparent authority’—otherwise known as ‘ostensible authority’. It arises when a third party is induced to enter into a transaction with a principal by a party who appears to have authority to act but who in fact lacks such authority. It is not authority, as such. Rather, the law gives effect to the appearance of authority, despite the fact that in reality there is no actual authority to act. The appearance may be created by the principal’s specifically misrepresenting to third parties that the agent enjoys authority to perform certain acts or by the principal’s allowing

Abstract:
Lay theories of change refer to beliefs people hold about how events develop over time and are related to each other. This chapter reviews cultural differences in lay theories of change between East Asians and Euro-Americans/Canadians. The overarching theme from the existing research is that East Asians tend to believe more than Westerners that phenomena change in a cyclical way, whereas Westerners tend to believe that events are either relatively stable or develop in a linear fashion. This cultural variation is manifested in a wide range of predictions and decisions. Furthermore, Euro–North A

Abstract:
It is often assumed that children do not really occur in medieval art. The problem for researchers is not so much one of finding representations of childhood, but of recognizing them. Medieval art has its own conventions and if we approach it with a present-minded attitude we are indeed likely to find only ‘miniature adults’ at best. This easily leads to a conclusion that medieval society neither knew nor understood the concept of childhood. Yet size and proportion can be deceptive: medieval art does not necessarily meet modern standards of naturalism and a small figure need not represent a ch
