Abstract:
Almost 30 years ago, I bought an IBM Selectric typewriter for about $500. I still use it occasionally and it works perfectly. Almost 20 years ago, I bought my first home microcomputer, an Apple II Plus, for about $5,000. The system included a monochrome Zenith monitor with an amber display, an Apple disk drive, and an Epson dot matrix printer, all state-of-the-art equipment. It also included a shift key modification so that both upper and lowercase letters would appear on the screen. The BASIC programming language was resident in ROM. I had to purchase software to run on the microcomputer, and my first purchase was the Apple Writer II word processor. This computer system is gone from my life; it's too old even to be stored with the “antiques” in the rafters of my garage.

Abstract:
The short story “Apple and Knife” (2008) by Indonesian writer Intan Paramaditha (born in 1979) is analysed within the comparative-typological framework of the Biblical and Quranic narrative about Yusuf and Zulaikha. The continuity of the motif transposition is traced from the literatures of the Middle East to that of the peoples of Nusantara who embraced Islam later. The intermediary was the Javanese Serat Yusup, which dates back to the 17th century. The literary skills and methods by Intan Paramaditha’s find their place somewhere in between the feminist literary criticism and horror stories. The deconstruction of some elements of the traditional narrative about Yusuf (e.g. the episode with the noble Egyptian women) makes the popular story to sound more meaningful to the readers of the modern Indonesian literature. In its turn, it sheds some light on the political and social developments of the “re-Islamized” island state of Indonesia. The author declares that there is no conflict of interest.

Abstract:
This study introduces a critical analytical reading of Rawiya Jarjoura Burbara's collection of short stories, L? ?Ur?d? ?an ?A?t?da A?laika / I Don't Want to Get Used to You, published in 2020, a year after the outbreak of the Coronavirus in November 2020. The collection consists of 23 narrative texts that are classified into three chapters. The first chapter is called, A?la -al- ?ar?q– M?a al-N?s/ On the Road-With People, which is the largest chapter and includes 10 short stories; the second chapter is called, A?n al-N?s – Habl al-Kadib/ With People-the Rope of Lies, which consists of 7 short stories, and the third chapter, which is called Ma?ahu-Tuffa?at Adam/ With Him – Adam's Apple, which consists of 6 short stories. The study attempts to highlight the theme of the 'Question' in the collection, as the texts, in general, fall in the genre of 'Literature of Question'. Throughout the collection, the writer raises daily life human questions that express her refusal acceptance of matters as they are and getting used to for granted matters as if the possibility of changing them does not exist anymore. The writer introduces questions that are likely to awaken the reader from his hibernation and wake the human beings, in general, to start thinking, questioning, changing, and getting out of the circle of accepting things as for granted and getting used to them. The writer, represented by the Narrators of her stories, refuses to get used to several social, psychological, political, and human life matters.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the small Oriental texts published in Piotr Czyżewski’s Polish anti-Muslim pamphlet Alfurkan tatarski (Wilno, 1616/1617) directed against the local Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. These texts consist of a small Arabic-Turkish prayer and the well-known Ottoman prophecy about “The Red Apple” and the expected victory of Christians over the Turks. The author argues that they go back to the Latin-language editions of the Croatian writer Bartul Đurđević/Bartolomej Georgijević (c. 1506 – c. 1566), who, after his return from a long Ottoman captivity, published several books on the Turkish subjects that were translated into many national European languages and disseminated in different editions throughout Western and Central Europe. These editions often contained samples of Ottoman texts accompanied by a parallel Latin translation and Latin-language interpretations of them, as well as small bilingual dictionaries, thus introducing Islam and the Turkish language to Europe. The article demonstrates the widespread prevalence of both Oriental texts (the Arabic-Turkish prayer and the Ottoman prophecy) in the European printed tradition and the presence of interest in them in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, evidenced by a manuscript copy of the Ottoman prophecy (late 17th century) and the Polish translation of both texts published in 1548 and 1615.

Abstract:
Abstract Thus far perhaps the most acclaimed Irish practitioner of the short story, Frank O’Connor, attributes a lasting influence to Russian author Anton Chekhov when he considers the direction that the modern Irish short story was to take in the twentieth century. In The Lonely Voice: A Study of the Short Story (1963), O’Connor emphasized two particular themes in Chekhov’s short fiction that influenced his own stories: on the one hand, a preoccupation with loneliness; on the other, a belief that venial sin, or the adoption of a false personality, was “far more destructive” than mortal sin itself. In other writings, he expressed an interest in narrative technique and structure as he found them in Chekhov’s stories. The article explores O’Connor’s “Uprooted” from his collection Crab Apple Jelly (1944), a story about displaced intellectuals. My reading illustrates how the Irish writer was not only adopting Chekhov’s themes but was also experimenting with Chekhov’s character types and narrative techniques, particularly as found in the Russian author’s story “The Lady with the Dog.” At the same time, O’Connor developed a distinctly individual technique of his own within the Irish realist/naturalist short story tradition, making a lasting impact on the art of the modern Irish short story. Unlike his displaced Irish characters in “Uprooted,” he prefers to remain faithful to this tradition.

Abstract:
This article investigates the plain language practices of professional writers in Quebec, using a survey. We contacted 55 professional writers and asked them to complete an online survey about how they apply plain language in their work, and the type of writing assistance they would find useful. We also asked 40 of those writers to carry out a simplification task to see what kind of simplifications they were actually making.
If the feelings about the reality of the writers’ work is in line with the literature, opinions on plain language guidelines are not. Most writers in our survey find them useful and precise enough, and this contrasts with reported criticisms of such guides. In the simplification task, we noticed that writers focus on the overall understanding of the text, and not only on some linguistic characteristics (as shown in plain language guidelines). The more experienced the writer, the more changes they will make to visual/structural aspects or relational efficiency. Putting the focus on the reader’s needs is their main concern.

碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>電機工程系<br>93<br>There are two major topics in which we engage, first, to analyze and apply each machine learning method in spam mails, which are written in English and Chinese words, classification problem. Second, according to the relation between features, we proposed a method, which combines "Sparse Binary Polynomial Hashing Method" with "Baysian Classifier." We believe this process could have better precision in classifying problem. The main improvement is applying on Bayesian classifier. We combine this process to other machine learning methods. If we put in use advanced baysian method, we could get a better precision result. Most importantly, this procedure also works well in Spam written in Chinese. In the mean time, we build a well-define spam in Chinese database with Microsoft Access software, and then we could have a completely testing environment in modern mail system. We join different process together and investigate the properties of modern spam mails. Finally, a new client-server system has been proposed. This system has better efficiency and more accurate precision. Based on above context, this system can help users build a clear, safely, and non-spam network environment.

Abstract:
AbstractWe present a general monitoring methodology to summarize news about predefined entities and topics into tractable time-varying indices. The approach embeds text mining techniques to transform news data into numerical data, which entails the querying and selection of relevant news articles and the construction of frequency- and sentiment-based indicators. Word embeddings are used to achieve maximally informative news selection and scoring. We apply the methodology from the viewpoint of a sustainable asset manager wanting to actively follow news covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects. In an empirical analysis, using a Dutch-written news corpus, we create news-based ESG signals for a large list of companies and compare these to scores from an external data provider. We find preliminary evidence of abnormal news dynamics leading up to downward score adjustments and of efficient portfolio screening.

Abstract:
AbstractWeb-based cryptocurrency mining attacks, also known as cryptojacking, become increasingly popular. A large number of diverse platforms (e.g., Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS) and devices (e.g., PC, smartphones, tablets, and even critical infrastructures) are widely impacted. Although a variety of detection approaches were recently proposed, it is challenging to apply these approaches to attack prevention directly.Instead, in this paper, we present a novel generic and accurate defense solution, called “MinerGate”, against cryptojacking attacks. To achieve the goal, MinerGate is designed as an extension of network gateways or proxies to protect all devices behind it. When attacks are identified, MinerGate can enforce security rules on victim devices, such as stopping the execution of related JavaScript code and alerting victims. Compared to prior approaches, MinerGate does not require any modification of browsers or apps to collect the runtime features. Instead, MinerGate focuses on the semantics of mining payloads (usually written in WebAssembly/asm.js), and semantic-based features. In our evaluation, we first verify the correctness of MinerGate by testing MinerGate in a real environment. Then, we check MinerGate’s performance and confirm MinerGate introduces relatively low overhead. Last, we verify the accuracy of MinerGate. For this purpose, we collect the largest WebAssembly/asm.js related code with ground truth to build our experiment dataset. By comparing prior approaches and MinerGate on the dataset, we find MinerGate achieves better accuracy and coverage (i.e., 99% accuracy and 98% recall). Our dataset will be available online, which should be helpful for more solid understanding of cryptojacking attacks.

This chapter determines just how successful Louis IX's conversion project had been. It first asks how many converted Muslims and pagans had actually settled in France. All the chroniclers and thirteenth-century biographers of Louis IX who write about the conversion project appear to imply that the overwhelming proportion of converts were from Islam. The chapter, however, presents a more complicated picture through the use of documentary evidence, and creates a rough estimate of the converted population in northern France during the thirteenth century. In addition, the chapter explores the other logistical concerns of settling these immigrant converts in France, covering their royal stipends and endowments, occupations, population densities, how well they assimilated into French society, and similar.

Abstract:
This essay offers a parallel reading of two stories, ‘Bliss’ by Katherine Mansfield and ‘The Apple Tree’ by Daphne du Maurier, revealing a hitherto unexamined yet fruitful area of research. Dramatic irony, organic unity and liminal spaces are identified and discussed in terms of how these are used to represent subconscious and conscious perceptions of reality. The plots incorporate symbols from well-known myths to suggest extreme mental states in narratives that invite the reader to occupy psychological spaces of delusion and fantasy. Material from previously unpublished letters reveals the extent to which Mansfield influenced du Maurier’s writing and this close analysis demonstrates how examining these writers in tandem provides a valuable mean of accessing their work in a new way. Du Maurier’s critical reputation is current undergoing a process of revision which echoes the way in which Mansfield has come to be increasingly regarded as one of the ‘high priestesses’ of modernism.

Abstract:
Is it possible that science fiction-films have influenced modern architecture and buildings in the real world? Ideas about the design and purpose of future cities often start with visions. Science fiction can be understood as a kind of thought experiment. The experimenter, the writer or filmmaker, begins with a hypothesis and sets up initial conditions. SF writers take notice of their colleagues’ work and results; they often borrow fundamental concepts from previous generations of writers. Authors elaborate on and transform these concepts, apply and test them in new situations, and add new ideas. I argue that our capacity to imagine things and phenomena that do not yet exist is important in the process of constructing and reorganizing human life and, hence, also urban environments. The concepts of “city” and “countryside”, both of which are often projected and experienced as opposites, with contradictions and conflicts built into them, are examined. Urban Transition through some of the most influential dystopian sf-movies with Metropolis is my starting point, films where the idea of the city can be said to be the main protagonist.

Abstract:
It is difficult to maintain and to adapt poorly written code presenting shortcomings in its structure. Refactoring techniques are used to improve thecode and the structure of applications, making them better and easier to modify. Design patterns are reusable solutions used in similar problems in object-oriented systems, so there is no need to recreate the solutions. Applying design patterns in the context of refactoring in a corrective way becomes a desired activity in the life cycle of a specific software system. However, in large-scale projects, the manual examination of artefacts to find problems and opportunities to apply a design pattern is a hard task. In this context, wepresent a metric-based heuristic function to detect where the Strategy designpattern can be applied in a given project. To evaluate the heuristic functionand its results we have also built a tool to show the results. This tool canexamine source code using ASTs (Abstract Syntax Trees), searching for opportunities to apply the Strategy pattern, indicating the exact location in the source code where the pattern is suggested, also showing some evidences usedin the detection.

In ASME 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2011-47276.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses the problem of control constraint realization applied to the design of maneuvers of complex under-actuated systems modeled as multibody problems. Applications of interest in the area of aerospace engineering are presented and discussed. The tangent realization of the control constraint is discussed from a theoretical point of view and used to determine feedforward control of realistic under-actuated systems. The effectiveness of the computed feedforward input is subsequently verified by applying it to more detailed models of the problems, in presence of disturbances and uncertainties in combination with feedback control. The proposed applications consist in the position control of a complex closed chain mechanism representative of a robotic system, the control of a simplified model of a canard and a conventional air vehicle in the vertical plane, and the angular velocity control of a wind-turbine. In the aeromechanics examples, the tangent realization of the control relies on the availability of the Jacobian matrix of an aeroelastic model. All problems are solved using a free general-purpose multibody software that writes the constrained dynamics of multi-field problems in form of Differential-Algebraic Equations (DAE). The equations are integrated using A/L-stable algorithms. The essential extension to the multibody code consisted in the addition of the capability to write arbitrary constraint equations and apply the corresponding reaction multipliers to arbitrary equations of motion. This allowed to exploit the modeling capabilities of the formulation without any undue restriction on the modeling requirements.

Abstract:
In this paper, we consider the minimum time problem for underwater vehicles. Using Lagrangian mechanics, we write the equations of motion for marine vehicles with 6 degrees of freedom as a controlled mechanical system. We then apply the necessary conditions from the maximum principle for a trajectory to be time optimal. Using techniques from differential geometry we analyze the resuls. Finally we supplement the theoretical study with numerical simulations.

Abstract:
The present writer proposes a new concept of power generation system for CO2 recovery named Hydrogen Decomposed from Natural Gas Turbine (HYDET) in this paper. This concept is natural gas reforming and hydrogen separation. The natural gas is reformed with steam simultaneously the hydrogen is separated from the reformed gas through the hydrogen separation membrane. After the residual gas is combusted by the after burner with pure oxygen, CO2 steam mixture is exhausted. An inorganic hydrogen separation membrane will be assumed to use such as ceramic multi-layer porous membranes. The performance of the proposed system will be over 50% HHV at the sending-end. Though the CO2 recovery ratio will depend upon Hydrogen and CO2 separation ratio of the membrane, theoretically it will be over 90%. And using CO2 liquefaction equipment of LNG cold heat exchanger, liquefied CO2 will be recovered with extra high efficiency. In order to apply this system, the development of the membrane reformer is the key technology.

Abstract:
Photo-realistic rendering systems on CPU traditionally have significant flexibility achieved mainly by the ability for end user to write custom plugins or shaders. The same cannot be said about majority of photo-realistic GPU renderers. Most «classic» approaches to design of user-extendable software on CPU, such as object-oriented plugins are not very well suited for GPU programming. In this paper we propose a restricted approach to developing extendable GPU rendering system at low development cost. Our hardware agnostic light-weight approach can be applied to existing rendering systems with minimal changes to them. We apply our approach to the problem of procedural textures implementation and show that, in addition to simplicity, our approach is faster then existing GPU solutions.

Abstract:
During a senior level thermal system design class given at York College of Pennsylvania, a customer-based design project has been implemented. This project provides the students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge that they learned in class and allows them to think creatively to achieve the given task. For this project, students are required to prepare a project proposal based on the needs of the customer and deliver a written report at the end of the semester. The main purpose of the project is to design an interactive museum display to show the working principle of a ram pump for the York County Heritage Trust Museum. The hydraulic ram pump utilizes the power of flowing water to operate without the use of electricity. The project requires students to apply energy and cost analysis. This paper presents the details of the design requirements, procedures and the final design. Examples of student work and the assessment of the work are also provided.

Abstract:
Teaching software testing should include a broad view of the main techniques, criteria, and tools. In general, students have few opportunities to test their code-projects suitably during the undergraduate course and, therefore, teaching software testing in practice is crucial to students recognize the advantages and limitations of different testing techniques. This paper reports the experience of teaching software testing in practice, with students applying an incremental testing strategy to validate their software projects. Students selected a software project developed during their undergraduate and an incremental testing strategy, including testing criteria learned in the class. The students should choose the testing techniques, apply them and write a report with the results and perceptions. Through this experience, it was possible to show to the students, in practice, the importance of combining more than one technique during the software testing activity.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to propose a strategy to classify texts (or parts of them) in an ordinal emotional scale to gauge a sentiment indicator in every domain. In particular, we develop a new dictionary for the Italian language which is built using an objective method where the polarities of synonyms and antonyms are accounted for in an iterative process. To build our sentiment indicator negations and intensifiers are also used, thus considering the context in which the single word is written. We apply our new dictionary to extract the sentiment from a set of around 40 issues of the Bank of Italy quarterly Economic Bulletin. Our results show that our strategy is able to correctly identify the sentiment expressed in the Bulletins, which is correlated to the main macroeconomic variables (such as national GDP, investment, consumption or unemployment rate). Our analysis shows that sentiment represents not only an evaluation of the stylistic way in which texts are written, but also a valid synthesis of all the external factors analysed in the same document.
