Abstract:
This thesis describes the process of creating a platform-independent mobile application for connecting mobile devices to wireless sensors using Bluetooth Low Energy, collecting data from connected sensors and uploading the collected data to a cloud storage service. As consumers and researchers use more sensors and other Bluetooth-devices, [1] one could argue that there is a need for simpler and standardised solutions to working with these. A literature study has been conducted where information on related research has been collected and important information about the necessary software components has been evaluated. In combination with the literature study, an IT artefact has been developed in the form of a mobile application that has been tested according to collected requirements to ensure the application's functionality. The purpose of this work is to contribute with a clear scientific process over what is required to create a mobile application of this kind and what potential difficulties exist in present-day design of this type of applications. The results show that some manufacturers may not be following the standards for Bluetooth data communication, thus making it hard to write generalized methods for retrieving data from sensors of any type or manufacturer.

Abstract:
Changing the architecture of the Ericsson Billing Gateway application has shown to solve the problem with dynamic memory management that decreased the performance. The new architecture that is focused on processes instead of threads showed increased performance. It also allowed for the possibility to adjust the process / thread configuration towards the network topology and hardware. Measurements of different configurations showed the importance of an accurate configuration and also that certain guidelines could be established based on the results.

Falgert, Marcus. "Geo-distributed application deployment assistance based on past routing information."

Full text
Abstract:
Cloud computing platforms allow users to deploy geographically distributed applications on servers around the world. Applications may be simple to deploy on these platforms, but it is up to the user and the application to decide which regions and servers to use for application placement. Furthermore, network conditions and routing between the geo-distributed servers change over time, which can lead to sub-optimal performance of applications deployed on such servers. A user could either employ a static deployment configuration of servers, or attempt to use a more dynamic configuration. However, both have inherent limitations. A static configuration will be sub-optimal, as it will be unable to adapt to changing network conditions. A more dynamic approach where an application could switch over or transition to a more suitable server could be beneficial, but this can be very complex in practice. Furthermore, such a solution is more about adapting to change as it happens, and not beforehand. This thesis will investigate the possibility of forecasting impending routing changes between servers, by leveraging messages generated by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and past knowledge about routing changes. BGP routers can delay BGP updates due to factors such as the minimum route advertisement interval (MRAI). Thus, out proposed solution involves forwarding BGP updates downstream in the network, before BGP routers process them. As routing between servers changes, so does the latency, meaning that the latency then could be predicted to some degree. This observation could be applied to realize when the latency to a server increases or decreases past another server. This in turn facilitates the decision process of selecting the most optimal servers in terms of latency for application deployment. The solution presented in this thesis can successfully predict routing changes between end-points in an enclosed environment, and inform users ahead of time that the latency is about to change. The time gained by such predictions depend on factors such as the number of ASs between the end-points, the MRAI, and the update processing delay imposed on BGP routers. Time gains between tens of milliseconds to over 2 minutes has been observed.

Fink, Caleb D. "Developing, Evaluating, and Demonstrating an Open Source Gateway and Mobile Application for the Smartfarm Decision Support System." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2018. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1880.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to design, develop, evaluate, and demonstrate an open source gateway and mobile application for the SmartFarm open source decision support system to improve agricultural stewardship, environmental conservation, and provide farmers with a system that they own. There are very limited options for an open source gateway for collecting data on the farm. The options available are: expensive, require professional maintenance, are not portable between systems, improvements are made only by the manufacturer, limited in customization options, difficult to operate, and data is owned by the company rather than the farmer. The gateway is designed to send data to the cloud from remote SmartFarm Data Acquisition (DAQ) nodes, collect measurement data from remote SmartFarm DAQ nodes, provide a means of wirelessly programming remote SmartFarm DAQ nodes, and a tool that provides data analysis and insight from remote SmartFarm DAQ nodes. It is evaluated to work with 900MHz radios, SmartFarm DAQ nodes, and costs $35. Its setup takes 4 steps and ~20 minutes installation time, does not require maintenance, can utilize Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other wireless protocols, and software can port to other systems. The gateway measured data rate of 93.4Mbit/s internet upload speed, passing a range of 252 to 1592 bytes of data from a remote node to the cloud, consumes 2.8 Watts, with a software efficiency of 25% CPU usage, a measurement efficiency of 1 message every 15 seconds, can provide data analysis with the cloud service tool, and it can wirelessly program remote DAQ nodes. The goal of the mobile app is educating farmers, academia, and community members, of farming sustainably today, and for the future. The app is used as a tool to aid people in farming sustainably, teaching agricultural stewardship, and teaching environmental conservation. The app is evaluated with adaptation of 85.1%, frequency of use at 0.12 respondents/minute, and 22 respondents said they find the SmartFarm DSS as beneficial. By developing, evaluating, and demonstrating the gateway and mobile app, the SmartFarm decision support system is a viable option for improving agricultural stewardship and retaining farmers’ ownership of their data.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the architecture of embedded systems. It summarizes the current state of accepted standards from IEEE 1451 family, which deals with creating an environment for the sensors and their involvement in various networks. These standards describe the open, network-independent communication architecture for a sensor-based system. One of the main outcomes of this work is the architectures presented as case studies, which can be used as design patters for embedded applications. They are demonstrated on ZigBee technology suitable mainly for small devices with very low power consumption. Based on these studies the new design of universal gateway was proposed. Its major advantage is that it allows interconnection of the endpoints based on different sensor network technologies. Additionally, the thesis deals with modifying the routing protocol of ZigBee network in order to reduce power consumption required to transmit one data packet.

Sundaresan, Srikanth. "Characterizing and improving last mile performance using home networking infrastructure." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52280.

Abstract:
More than a billion people access the Internet through residential broadband connections worldwide, and this number is projected to grow further. Surprisingly, little is known about some important properties of these networks: What performance do users obtain from their ISP? What factors affect performance of broadband networks? Are users bottlenecked by their ISP or by their home network? How are applications such as the Web affected by these factors? Answering these questions is difficult; there is tremendous diversity of technologies and applications in home and broadband networks. While a lot of research has tackled these questions piecemeal, the lack of a good vantage point to obtain good measurements from these networks makes it notably difficult to do a holistic characterization of the モlast mileヤ. In this dissertation we use the home gateway to characterize home and access networks and mitigate performance bottlenecks that are specific to such networks. The home gateway is uniquely situated; it is always on and, as the hub of the network, it can directly observe the home network, the access network, and user traffic. We present one such gateway- based platform, BISmark, that currently has nearly 200 active access points in over 20 countries. We do a holistic characterization of three important components of the last mile using the gateway as the vantage point: the access link that connects the user to the wider Internet, the home network to which devices connect, and Web performance, one of the most commonly used applications in today's Internet. We first describe the design, development, and deployment of the BISmark platform. BISmark uses custom gateways to enable measurements and evaluate performance opti- mizations directly from home networks. We characterize access link performance in the US using measurements from the gateway; we evaluate existing techniques and propose new techniques that help us understand these networks better. We show how access link technology and home networking hardware can affect performance. We then develop a new system that uses passive measurements at the gateway to localize bottlenecks to either the wireless network or the access link. We deploy this system in 64 homes worldwide and characterize the nature of bottlenecks, and the state of the wireless network in these homes - specifically we show how the wireless network is rarely the bottleneck as throughput exceeds 35 Mbits/s. Finally, we characterize bottlenecks that affect Web performance that are specific to the last mile. We show how latency in the last mile results in page load times stagnating at throughput exceeding 16 Mbits/s, and how simple techniques deployed at the gateway can mitigate these bottlenecks.

Abstract:
This Master’s Thesis in Electrical Engineering concerns the introduction of a Parlay gateway in Skanova’s public circuit switched telephone network, what network integrity problems this brings, and how to preserve the integrity of the network. There is a rising demand from the market on Skanova to be able to offer integrated and useful services via their network. Examples of such services are Web Controlled Call Forwarding and Virtual Call Centres. Until now, these services have been implemented with the Intelligent Network concept which is a technology for concentrating the service logic in the telephone network to centralised service platforms within the network operator’s domain. Developing new services in this environment is expensive and therefore, Skanova wants to open the network for third party service providers. The opening of the network is enabled by the introduction of a gateway implementing the open service interface Parlay. The crucial point when opening the network for third party service providers is to maintain the integrity of the network. Parlay is an object oriented Application Programming Interface that enables a third party service access to core network resources in a controlled manner. The authors’ definition of network integrity is: “the ability of a network to steadily remain in a safe state, while performing according to the expectations and specifications of its owner, i.e. delivering the expected functionality and providing means to charge for utilised network resources”. The thesis describes a few services implemented via the Parlay interface and points out examples of activities in these services that may jeopardise the integrity of the network. The described activities belong to one of the two categories: Call Control Functionality or Lack of Charging Instruments. The thesis also describes two important methods for addressing encountered integrity problems. The methods are: Parlay Service Level Agreement and Policy Management.</p> Finally, the solutions are compared and the conclusion is that Policy Management is a conformable and flexible method for addressing lots of integrity problems and that these are important qualities, since new integrity problems will arise all the time.

Abstract:
With growing concerns on global energy demand and climate change, it is important to focus on efficient utilization of electricity in commercial buildings, which contribute significantly to the overall electricity consumption. Accordingly, there has been a number of Building Energy Management (BEM) software/hardware solutions to monitor energy consumption and other measurements of individual building loads. BEM software serves as a platform to implement smart control strategies and stores historical data. Although BEM software provides such lucrative benefits to building operators, in terms of energy savings and personalized control, these benefits are not harnessed by most small to mid-sized buildings due to a high cost of deployment and maintenance. A cloud-based BEM system can offer a low-cost solution to promote ease of use and support a maintenance-free installation. In a typical building, a conventional router has a public address and assigns private addresses to all devices connected to it. This led to a network topology, where the router is the only device in the Internet space with all other devices forming an isolated local area network behind the router. Due to this scenario, a cloud-based BEM software needs to pass through the router to access devices in a local area network. To address this issue, some devices, during operation, make an outbound connection to traverse through the router and provide an interface to itself on the Internet. Hence, based on their capability to traverse through the router, devices in a local area network can be distinguished as cloud and non-cloud devices. Cloud-based BEM software with sufficient authorization can access cloud devices. In order to access devices adhering to non-cloud protocols, cloud-based BEM software requires a device in the local area network which can perform traversal through the router on behalf of all non-cloud devices. Such a device acts as an IoT gateway, to securely interconnect devices in a local area network with cloud-based BEM software. This thesis focuses towards architecting, designing and prototyping an Internet-of-Things (IoT) gateway which can perform traversal on behalf of non-cloud devices. This IoT gateway enables cloud-based BEM software to have a comprehensive access to supported non-cloud devices. The IoT gateway has been designed to support BACnet, Modbus and HTTP RESTful, which are the three widely adopted communication protocols in the building automation and control domain. The developed software executes these three communication protocols concurrently to address requests from cloud-based BEM system. The performance of the designed architecture is independent of the number of devices supported by the IoT gateway software.

Modern telemetry networks require the use of efficient domain-specific protocols at the transport, network, and routing layers. However, the existing end-devices and services are based on legacy protocols such as TCP/IP. This necessitates translation between the legacy and aeronautical protocol. In this paper we propose an efficient translation mechanism with the help of gateways at the telemetry network edges.

Our homes become smart thanks to devices providing services (security, energy efficiency,…). Untrusted service providers want to take advantage of the smart home by developing services hosted by an embedded smart home gateway. The gateway should be robust enough to handle software problems. Sharing resources of the gateway between service providers allows providing richer services but raises risks of resource sharing conflicts. We addresses the problem of resource sharing conflicts in the smart home gateway, by prevention when possible, and by detection and resolution otherwise. Our first contribution "Jasmin" is a middleware to develop, deploy and isolate native embedded component-based and service-oriented applications. Jasmin uses Linux containers for lightweight isolation. Our second contribution "Incinerator" is a subsystem in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) aiming to resolve the problem of Java stale references, which cause significant memory leaks in an OSGi-based smart home gateway, hence increasing the risks of memory sharing conflicts. Incinerator detects and eliminates stale references. In order to detect memory sharing conflicts, we propose our third contribution: memory monitoring subsystem in the JVM. The system accurately accounts for resources consumed during cross-application interactions, and provides snapshots of memory usage statistics for the different service providers sharing the gateway

Abstract:
Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs) have emerged as a viable and affordable solution to the computing needs of communities of practice that may require the need to improve system performance or enhance the availability of their scientific applications. According to the literature, the ease of access and several other issues which relate to the interoperability among different resources are the biggest challenges surrounding the use of these infrastructures. The traditional method of using a Command Line Interface (CLI) to access these resources is difficult and can make the learning curve quite steep. This approach can result in the low uptake of DCIs as it prevents potential users of the infrastructures from adopting the technology. Science Gateways have emerged as a viable option that are used to realise the high-level scientific domain-specific user interfaces that hide all the details of the underlying infrastructures and expose only the science-specific aspects of the scientific applications to be executed in the various DCIs. A Science Gateway is a digital interface to advanced technologies which is used to provide adequate support for science and engineering research and education. The focus of this study therefore is to propose and implement a Methodology for dEveloping Scientific Software Applications in science GatEways (MESSAGE). This will be achieved by testing an approach which is considered to be appropriate for developing applications in Science Gateways. In the course of this study, several Science Gateway functionalities obtained from the review of literature which may be utilised to provide services for different communities of practice are highlighted. To implement the identified functionalities, this study utilises the methodology for developing scientific software applications in Science Gateways. In order to achieve this purpose, this research therefore adopts the Catania Science Gateway Framework (CSGF) and the Future Gateway approach to implement the methods and ideas described in the proposed methodology, as well the essential services of Science Gateways discussed throughout the thesis. In addition, three different set of scientific software applications are utilised for the implementation of the proposed methodology. While the first application primarily serves as the case study for implementing the methodology discussed in this thesis, a second application is used to evaluate the entire process. Furthermore, several other real-life scientific applications developed (using two distinctly different Science Gateway frameworks) are also utilised for the purpose of evaluation. Subsequently, a revised MESSAGE methodology for developing scientific software applications in Science Gateways is discussed in the latter Chapter of this thesis. Following from the implementation of both scientific software applications which sees the use of portlets to execute single experiments, a study was also conducted to investigate ways in which Science Gateways may be utilised for the execution of multiple experiments in a distributed environment. Finally, similar to making different scientific software applications accessible and available (worldwide) to the communities that need them, the processes involved in making their associated research outputs (such as data, software and results) easily accessible and readily available are also discussed. The main contribution of this thesis is the MESSAGE methodology for developing scientific software applications in Science Gateways. Other contributions which are also made in different aspects of this research include a framework of the essential services required in generic Science Gateways and an approach to developing and executing multiple experiments (via Science Gateway interfaces) within a distributed environment. To a lesser extent, this study also utilises the Open Access Document Repository (OADR) (and other related technologies) to demonstrate accessibility and availability of research outputs associated with specific scientific software applications, thereby introducing the concept (and thus laying the foundation) of an Open Science research.

Abstract:
In Internet of Things (IoT), data is handled and stored by software known as middleware (located on a server). The evolution of the IoT concept led to the construction of many IoT middleware, software that plays a key role since it supports the communication among devices, users, and applications. Several aspects can impact the performance of a middleware. Based in a deep review of the related literature and in the proposal of a Reference Model for IoT middleware, this thesis proposes a new IoT middleware, called In.IoT, a scalable, secure, and innovative middleware solution based on a deep review of the state of the art and following the reference middleware architecture that was proposed along with this research work. In.IoT addresses the middleware concerns of the most popular solutions (security, usability, and performance) that were evaluated, demonstrated, and validated along this study, and it is ready and available for use. In.IoT architectural recommendations and requirements are detailed and can be replicated by new and available solutions. It supports the most popular application-layer protocols (MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP). Its performance is evaluated in comparison with the most promising solutions available in the literature and the results obtained by the proposed solution are extremely promising. Furthermore, this thesis studies the impact of the underlying programming language in the solution's overall performance through a performance evaluation study that included Java, Python, and Javascript, identifying that globally, Java demonstrates to be the most robust choice for IoT middleware. IoT devices communicate with the middleware through an application layer protocol that may differ from those supported by the middleware, especially when it is considered that households will have various devices from different brands. The thesis offers an alternative for such cases, proposing an application layer gateway, called MiddleBridge. MiddleBridge translates CoAP, MQTT, DDS, and Websockets messages into HTTP (HTTP is supported by most IoT middleware). With MiddleBridge, devices can send a smaller message to an intermediary (MiddleBridge), which restructures it and forwards it to a middleware, reducing the time that a device spends transmitting. The proposed solutions were evaluated in comparison with other similar solutions available in the literature, considering the metrics related to packet size, response times, requests per second, and error percentage, demonstrating their better results and tremendous potential. Furthermore, the study used XGBoost (a machine learning technique) to detect the occurrence of replication attacks where an attacker obtains device credentials, using it to generate false data and disturb the IoT environment. The obtained results are extremely promising. Thus, it is concluded that the proposed approach contributes towards the state of the art of IoT middleware solutions

Abstract:
The thesis, conducted as part of a CIFRE grant, and extending one of the aspects of the ANR project Traouiero, first addresses the production, extension and improvement of multilingual corpora by machine translation (MT) and contributory post-editing (PE). Functional and technical improvements have been made to the SECTra and iMAG software produced in previous PhD theses (P.C. Huynh, H.T. Nguyen), and progress has ben made toward a generic definition of the structure of a multilingual, annotated and multi-media corpus that may contain usual documents as well as pseudo-documents (such as Web pages) and meta-segments. This part has been validated by the creation of good French-Chinese bilingual corpora, one of them resulting from the first application to literary translation (a Jules Verne novel).A second part, initially motivated by an industrial need, has consisted in building MT systems of Moses type, specialized to sub-languages, for french↔chinese, and to study how to improve them in the context of a continuous use with the possibility of PE. As part of an internal project on the LIG website and of a project (TABE-FC) in cooperation with Xiamen University, it has been possible to demonstrate the value of incremental learning in statistical MT, under certain conditions, through an experiment that spread over the whole thesis. The third part of the thesis is devoted to contributing and making available computer tools and resources. The main ones are related to the COST project MUMIA of the EU and result from the exploitation of the CLEF-2011 collection of 1.5 million partially multilingual patents. Large translation memories have been extracted from it (17.5 million segments), 3 MT systems have been produced (de-fr, en-fr, fr-de), and a website of support for multilingual IR on patents has been constructed. One also describes the on-going implementation of JianDan-eval, a platform for building, deploying and evaluating MT systems

The purpose of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) architecture is intended to provide mobile users to access Internet content anytime and anywhere. The mobile phone acts as a simple web browser in WAP environment and a WAP Gateway is used as a bridge between wireless and wired network. Therefore, the mobile phone retrieves Internet content through WAP Gateway using the WAP protocol. The WAP Gateway not only plays the role of protocol gateway but also takes charge of the content encoding. In this thesis, we implement a passive WAP Gateway and test the Gateway in IP network environment using PC-based mobile client simulator. The result shows that the gateway works well in IP network.

With the application of internet-of-things (IoT) has become more popular, research about using wireless sensor networks (WSN) has also become more important. Due to the nodes in IoT usually set up in the wireless environment, difficult to supply power, how to reduce consumption to extend the lifetime becomes a significant issue. The main behavior of the nodes in IoT are data sensing, data operation, data transmission. Among above, data transmission always takes the largest part of sensors’ power consumption. Thus, data transmission becomes on main study. In this thesis, we use a way of bounded-error compression by allowing certain amount of errors, regarding similar value as the same. Thus reduce the amount of data transmission and finally achieve the compression. In addition, we also use the textile machine data set to compare the actual compression on edge computing gateway with Bounded-Error Run-Length Encoding (BERLE) and Bounded-Error Huffman Coding (BEHC) in the experiment.

Currently the broadband device and service have developed completely in home network. Accordingly, the integrated service of data, voice and video (Triple-play) has urged in broadband industry development. Such as upgrading to DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface specification) 3.0 of cable modem, more and more Multimedia Service Operators (MSO) are interesting in infrastructure upgrading aggressively. MSO provides the digital set-top box and cable modem products to end user, and delivers more advanced services through new generation product with better performance and integrated varied function. This works proposed a concept of Headed Gateway via system integration based on DVB-C and DOCSIS, established a structure for digital home-used environment. Headed Gateway is a kind of home-used gateway device connecting to external internet which provided each kind of communication service of different domain. System design is very important on how to improve and optimize the performance of RF front-end receiver, so it is a difficult topic and can’t provide qualified application without proper application of connecting each device via sufficient internet service. That’s the reason why to design the optimized Triplexer on RF front-end receiver can also improve the performance. According to the analysis result, in the case of low reception power, it could keep great ability of modulation, and increasing at least 15% of minimum received power level. It’s essential to implement the management of energy saving since the power consumption of extremely integrated headed gateway is higher than other simple one or set-top boxes. According to the actual experiment, it is probably to save 45% power consumption if define the power mode according to the user's habit and operated condition.

In recent years, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a new and developing technology. But the current wireless sensor network still be used to develop in a closed environment, and it does not have a remote control and remote sensing mechanism. ZigBee is an emerging protocol, which is based on the IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN standard, and to add the Network and Application layers. So we can use the ZigBee to meet the remote monitor and control of the wireless sensor network. The combination of WSN and ZigBee can construct a ubiquitous environment; it can help us to convey information at any time, anywhere. In this paper, we design a ZigBee gateway node, which integrates with Internet, used in the ZigBee network. Through this gateway, we can access the information from the wireless sensor network more convenience. And by design this powerful network platform, to bring the service of the ZigBee stack into full play.

With the capabilities of sensing, actuation, and communication, Internet of Things (IoT) enables close interactions between humans and machines in various kinds of scenarios. As a results, fruitful protocols are developed, such as REpresentational State Transfer~(REST), Constrained Application Protocol~(CoAP), MQ Telemetry Transport~(MQTT), MQTT For Sensor Networks~(MQTT-SN), etc., to support various kinds of IoT applications. Such heterogeneity in protocols causes interoperability issue, which could have a negative impact on peoples' acceptance and adoption of IoT and thus forestall the widespread deployment of IoT. In this thesis, we try to resolve this issue in the scenario of "Smart Home", where we propose an experimental platform of IoT home gateway to support IP-based and non-IP-based IoT devices deployed in house. By implementing the functionalities of device discovery, non-IP interface, MQTT/CoAP proxy, event listener/executor pool, and access control, the proposed home gateway provide a secure and application-agnostic environment for the heterogeneous devices. In particular, Near Field Communication~(NFC) is applied to enable auto-configuration in device discovery, which further improves the usability of IoT. Rules and permission, access control incurs security, we further improves the security with key exchanging during NFC auto-configuration. Also, To improve the effectiveness of supporting interoperability, our platform will be open-sourced and be compatible with the famous open-source IoTivity framework.

Accompany with the rapidly progressed technology and all kinds of advanced weapon systems being developed constantly, the training of military personnel to operate these weapon systems safely and efficiently by using the training simulators of fighter, tank, warship… etc. already becomes the trend of the military training. To satisfy the training request for the personal combat skill or small unit military mission is the basic design concept of the traditional training simulator. The traditional training simulator is unable to offer the team training or the large-scale joint combat training. Due to the progress of the computer and network technology and experiences from real combats, the military has recognized that the simulation in an individual training is not the same as the real combat. So, the idea of Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) arises. The main purpose of this research is to use a flight model of fighter and an open distributed interactive simulation standard called High Level Architecture (HLA) that was developed by the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) of the U.S. Department of Defense to implement an HLA-compliant joint flight simulation training environment. In this thesis, an Application Layer Gateway is constructed to make the non-HLA training simulator become HLA-compliant more easily.

Abstract:
The development of adaptive environments has the main objective of providing well-being to an individual, improving the environmental conditions of indoor environments and facilitating/automating any activity. In order to implement such systems, the use of devices capable of intercommunication and acquisition of environment-related parameters around the user is essential. Using wireless sensor networks, it is possible to monitor the various quality indices of indoor environments that can be used to develop strategies to improve quality of life of the users in personalized way. In this dissertation, a system based on a wireless sensor network that analyses and improves the environmental quality of indoor spaces, as well as evaluating the health status of an individual is presented. The system acquires and acts upon air quality and illumination quality-related parameters, as well as physiological data of a user, using sensor nodes and actuators distributed throughout the environment. Several wireless communication protocols have been implemented to enable intercommunication between the several elements present in the sensor network, such as actuators, sensor nodes and a coordinating / gateway node. Several warning mechanisms have been configured to alert the user to the presence of factors that may endanger their health, namely the presence of pollutants and thermal conditions that may trigger respiratory distress. In order to provide real-time system control including additional warning mechanisms, data analysis, a dedicated web application has been developed for this system. The user can control the environment according with his own needs and preferences through profiles configuration. The whole process of system development, hardware, software, experimental tests and contributions are included in this dissertation.
This makes Skype become the most suitable cooperator with eBay.” When integrating with Skype, eBay makes buyers and sellers communicate with each other through VoIP. This removes the biggest obstacle between buyers and sellers and achieves an “unparalleled e-commerce and communications engine.” “eBay with Skype” is the best example of 3PCC with e-commerce. 3PCC is a model that allows an entity (which is called controller) to manage and set up a communication between two or more other parties. It has already existed in the PSTN for a long time. Although there are many applications designed for SIP, they are not 3PCC with e-commerce model. Therefore, we attempt to design an application that integrating 3PCC with e-commerce. In this paper, we not only introduce how 3PCC is achieved but also express how REFER (a new method in SIP) can be used for replacing the traditional 3PCC mechanism in chapter 2. Chapter 3 will introduce the S/H development framework, the flows of SIP and the functions or libraries related to the Gateway. In chapter 4, we will first explain the design concept about our systems and then express how we implement the system. These include the website database structures, the Gateway programs and the packet analysis and verification. Finally, we will conclude this paper in Chapter 5. In addition, we will show the system and operation guide in appendix.

The progress of Internet technology brings the rapid growth of multimedia application, especially the application of Voice over Internet Protocol such as Skype and MSN which are popular in the world. One of the well-known signaling protocols of VoIP, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), widely spreads and commonly applies. The software and devices in use of SIP gradually increase. Each VoIP device needs to assign an IPv4 address for communication. Nowadays the IPv4 addresses have been exhausted because it still widely uses IPv4 addresses for network. IPv6 which can provide large address space is proposed to replace IPv4. However the IPv6 deployment is not widespread. The duration of transition from both IPv4 and IPv6 networks can make users or devices in IPv4 and IPv6 networks communicate with each other. One of transition mechanism, the IVI translation mechanism, allows users to access IPv4 and IPv6 networks. But the IVI translation does not translate the payload of packet. We implement a translation for SIP in VoIP with IVI translation mechanism such that it can translate SIP messages form IPv4 or IPv6 networks.

With the advances in computer technology, IoT(Internet of Things) applications appear in many fields. Currently, many products or applications that are advertised related to Internet of Things technologies, such as smart TVs, air conditioners or smart fans, mostly utilize the wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth, ZigBee or Wi-Fi for networking. These products are generally not well-function expansion and planning, poor compatibility, customization features more difficult. On the other hand, most IoT systems typically integrate wireless sensors and remote I/O devices for remote monitoring and control of the system. However, when communications in this architecture break down, remote monitoring and control can fail and cause serious damage. In this study, architectures consisting of controllers, sensors, actuators, communications equipment, and communications gateways were used to replace the typical IoT system architecture. First of all, the monitoring and control node in the work area has the ability of active control and can remain operate autonomously under the interruption of communication. Secondly, two kinds of gateway are designed in the system architecture. One kind of gateway can disperse the planning task of IoT system, reduce the time and frequency of data transfer; another gateway can be connected to heterogeneous network, effectively expand the type of wireless communications. Finally, this study uses the power system of monitor and remote water supply system as examples to verify that the proposed IoT architecture can effectively cross devices and platforms and reach the goal of remote monitoring and control.

Abstract:
GSM has changed the face of communication and information exchange, much as the Internet did. With the advances made in the mobile technology arena, new opportunities are created. Mobile Commerce (m-Commerce) is one such opportunity. Each new advance in technology brings with it associated risks. This dissertation focuses on the risks involved with m-Commerce for the banking industry. This dissertation provides a detailed overview of basic services that any m-Commerce application should provide to the banking industry. These principles provide the foundation for securing any financial transaction over untrusted networks. Several mechanisms to provide these services are also discussed. Examples of such mechanisms include hash functions, Message Authentication Codes and Digital Signatures. The security of GSM networks has come under attack in the past. This is largely due to the fact that the GSM consortium opted to develop their security technologies in secret, rather than in the public domain. This dissertation aims to evaluate the security offered by GSM and assess potential attacks in order to further understand risks associated with m-Commerce applications over GSM. In recent years there have been significant additions to the GSM enabling technology family. The arrival of the SIM Application Toolkit and the Wireless Application Protocol promised to again change the face of commerce. Although market acceptance of these technologies proved to be initially slow, usage is set to increase exponentially within the next couple of years. A detailed analysis of these enabling technologies is presented in the dissertation. Possible attacks on these technologies are discussed in the latter part or this document. Based on the findings of the research, some changes to either the application architectures or the processing of the data have been suggested in order to enhance the security offered by these services. It is not the intent of this dissertation to redesign these applications, but to rather leverage off the current technologies in order to enable secure m-Commerce over these channels. With the coming of the era of Internet of Things (IoT), the changes in demand of the RFID applications are getting more and more increasing. So if we want to extend some new functions on current systems, the developers must upgrade the new codes to overall RFID nodes one by one for deployment. Once the deployment is completed and goes on production, it will be difficult to change the program again. The lack of flexibility and the complicated work of development and deployment steps results in the increasing of the cost and cycle of RFID system development. This thesis presents an RFID gateway platform and its kernel includes a 32-bit microcontroller, RFID middleware, RF wireless communication interface, and a software/hardware integrated module of an embedded web server. By the GRAFCET editor, the remote developers can describe the function and discrete event process of applications in an intuitive way and high-level perspective, translate it into coding table, download to gateway through Internet, and transfer to each RFID node. The GRAFCET Virtual Machine installed on each node runs the program logic according to the coding table in real-time. With the gateway platform and graphical development, it can not only enhance the flexibility of embedded system design but also solve the problem on the difficulty of upgrade and deployment issue.

Abstract:
Over the past few years there has been a widespread use of wearable devices such as smartbands, which are getting more evolved from a technological point of view and at affordable costs. These devices allow the continuous monitoring of physiological signals, offering a wide range of opportunities for the development of health monitoring and evaluation applications. Within the scope of this dissertation, the prototype for laboratory use of a system with the purpose of remote online monitoring physiological signals was developed for people with mental or disorders. In order to perform the collection of physiological data, the E4 wristband from Empatica was chosen. The developed system allows the collected data to be transmitted to the Cloud and, with the help of a smartphone, an Android application works as a gateway. This enables the reception of data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and its transmission via Wi-Fi or 4G mobile network. The Android application also allows selecting the data to be transmitted and its numerical visualization. Through a responsive Web application, all data sent to the Cloud can be viewed, in graphics, and previous sessions can be accessed. Thus, a monitoring system that helps the caregivers and family members in long distance evaluations of the patients was implemented. This program also allows faster and immediate care, eliminating the majority of travel needs and reducing associated costs. The developed system was tested in a laboratory, in order to evaluate the entire monitoring process, from data acquisition to final visualization in the interface. Tests were carried out to assess the delay in communications and the results were compared between communications over Wi-Fi and 4G. Finally, the safety and performance of the system were tested. The archived results showed a lower delay in Wi-Fi communications comparatively to 4G communications, and no data losses. Regarding security, it was confirmed that only users authenticated through an institutional email have access to the data visualization.

Since the CAN-BUS launched in the 1983s, It was achieved to enable the integration of the electronic device into the automobile by used the CAN-BUS. As time progress and intense market competition, there will be more and more automotive feature that needs to be implemented by the electronic hardware and software technology, Therefore, There are many suppliers will inevitably need to integrate they products into network of automotive, but there are still many smaller systems or signals that do not to use CAN-BUS in communication for automobile system, In addition, The vehicle manufacturers are relatively closed policy for vehicle market, so as to cause many 3C electronic manufacturers could not integration they products into the automotive network system. Due to consideration of the above situations, we hope to use the concept of the gateway to propose a simple platform; so that many electronic signals and systems can be more easily integration they products into the automotive network system for related applications. This paper is to create a simple protocol and application of gateway. The goal is to enable the different electronic devices to connect to the network of the vehicle for related application. Users can take the normally electronic signals to communicate with the network of the vehicle, through the general interface and protocol of this simple Gateway, thus reducing development costs and verification time. Due to the normally electronic signals do not have the network arbitration mechanism; there are certain problems in communication that need to be solved. Therefore, this research topic analyzes the possible communication problems caused by the conversion between multi-channel and CAN-BUS and proposes a relevant solution to make more stable and more commonality for this simple Gateway.

This business plan details the concept and implementation of SMART BUSINESS GATEWAY (SMART BUSINESS GATEWAY), which provides an affordable and accessible tool for owners of Small &; Mid-sized Business (SMB) to enable versatile cloud based business software applications in their daily operation and business. The core service of SMART BUSINESS GATEWAY offers an environment yet platform for SMB owners and IT personnel to investigate software applications and to start using these applications after the trial period with paying a full activation fee. SMART BUSINESS GATEWAY is not only to populate the exposure for cloud based business application providers, but also to increase user stickiness and loyalty. In current IT market climate, cloud based business application adoption is very limited for big firms equipped with IT Team only. The developer with newly launched cloud based business application doesn’t have effective and multiple channels to market the product and to reach out its customers; not to mention to sustain quality revenue with profits. Our solution could resolve these problems and benefit all of stakeholders in this ecosystem.

Abstract:
The orbits of interest for potential missions are stable or nearly stable to maintain long term presence for conducting scientific studies and to reduce the possibility of rapid departure. Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits (NRHOs) offer such stable or nearly stable orbits that are defined as part of the L1 and L2 halo orbit families in the circular restricted three-body problem. Within the Earth-Moon regime, the L1 and L2 NRHOs are proposed as long horizon trajectories for cislunar exploration missions, including NASA's upcoming Gateway mission. These stable or nearly stable orbits do not possess well-distinguished unstable and stable manifold structures. As a consequence, existing tools for stationkeeping and transfer trajectory design that exploit such underlying manifold structures are not reliable for orbits that are linearly stable. The current investigation focuses on leveraging stretching direction as an alternative for visualizing the flow of perturbations in the neighborhood of a reference trajectory. The information supplemented by the stretching directions are utilized to investigate the impact of maneuvers for two contrasting applications; the stationkeeping problem, where the goal is to maintain a spacecraft near a reference trajectory for a long period of time, and the transfer trajectory design application, where rapid departure and/or insertion is of concern.

Particularly, for the stationkeeping problem, a spacecraft incurs continuous deviations due to unmodeled forces and orbit determination errors in the complex multi-body dynamical regime. The flow dynamics in the region, using stretching directions, are utilized to identify appropriate maneuver and target locations to support a long lasting presence for the spacecraft near the desired path. The investigation reflects the impact of various factors on maneuver cost and boundedness. For orbits that are particularly sensitive to epoch time and possess distinct characteristics in the higher-fidelity ephemeris model compared to their CR3BP counterpart, an additional feedback control is applied for appropriate phasing. The effect of constraining maneuvers in a particular direction is also investigated for the 9:2 synodic resonant southern L2 NRHO, the current baseline for the Gateway mission. The stationkeeping strategy is applied to a range of L1 and L2 NRHOs, and validated in the higher-fidelity ephemeris model.

For missions with potential human presence, a rapid transfer between orbits of interest is a priority. The magnitude of the state variations along the maximum stretching direction is expected to grow rapidly and, therefore, offers information to depart from the orbit. Similarly, the maximum stretching in reverse time, enables arrival with a minimal maneuver magnitude. The impact of maneuvers in such sensitive directions is investigated. Further, enabling transfer design options to connect between two stable orbits. The transfer design strategy developed in this investigation is not restricted to a particular orbit but applicable to a broad range of stable and nearly stable orbits in the cislunar space, including the Distant Retrograde Orbit (DROs) and the Low Lunar Orbits (LLO) that are considered for potential missions. Examples for transfers linking a southern and a northern NRHO, a southern NRHO to a planar DRO, and a southern NRHO to a planar LLO are demonstrated.

This study, utilizing the common gateway interface (CGI), constructs a server system to provide the search and estimation of the properties of gases and liquids. It is a typical common gateway interface for chemical industry application (CGICIA). The property search and estimation system is written in C++ programming language. Major property search and estimation are heat capacity, saturated vapor pressure, viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficients and so on. A data bank consisting of 618 compounds with more than 20 basic data or parameters for each compound is built. For property estimation, parameters are retrieved form data bank and plugged into various empirical or semi-empirical equations to complete the computation. Most of the property estimation equations are from“The Properties of Gases and Liquids”by R. C. Reid, J. M. Prausnitz and B. E. Poling. Alternatively, the well-known group contribution method and its modified counterpart group interaction contribution method are included. The system has been tested in an IBM-compatible personal computer with PentiumIII-450MHz processor and 256MB RAM, running on Microsoft windows 2000 server operating system. Performance is excellent for both the property search and estimation. The system is stable and response is prompt.

Abstract:
Road accidents represent a serious social problem and are one of the leading causes of human death and disability on a global scale. To reduce the risk and severity of a road accident, a variety of new safety applications can be realized through wireless communications among vehicles driving nearby each other, or among vehicles and especially deployed road side units (RSUs), a technology known as a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). Most of the VANET-enabled safety applications are based on broadcasting of safety messages by vehicles or RSUs, either periodically or in case of an unexpected event, such as a hard brake or dangerous road condition detection. Each broadcast safety message should be successfully delivered to the surrounding vehicles and RSUs without any excess delay, which is one of the main functions of a medium access control (MAC) protocol proposed for VANETs. This thesis presents VeMAC, a new multichannel time division multiple access (TDMA) protocol specifically designed to support the high priority safety applications in a VANET scenario. The ability of the VeMAC protocol to deliver periodic and event-driven safety messages in VANETs is demonstrated by a detailed delivery delay analysis, including queueing and service delays, for both types of safety messages. As well, computer simulations are conducted by using MATLAB, the network simulator ns-2, and the microscopic vehicle traffic simulator VISSIM, in order to evaluate the performance of the VeMAC protocol, in comparison with the IEEE 802.11p standard and the ADHOC MAC protocol (another TDMA protocol proposed for ad hoc networks). A real city scenario is simulated and different performance metrics are evaluated, including the network goodput, protocol overhead, channel utilization, protocol fairness, probability of a transmission collision, and safety message delivery delay. It is shown that the VeMAC protocol considerably outperforms the existing MAC schemes, which have significant limitations in supporting VANET safety applications. In addition to enhancing road safety, in-vehicle Internet access is one of the main applications of VANETs, which aims at providing the vehicle passengers with a low-cost access to the Internet via on-road gateways. This thesis presents a new strategy for deploying Internet gateways on the roads, in order to minimize the total cost of gateway deployment, while ensuring that a vehicle can connect to an Internet gateway (using multihop communications) with a probability greater than a specified threshold. This cost minimization problem is formulated by using binary integer programming, and applied for optimal gateway placement in a real city scenario. To the best of our knowledge, no previous strategy for gateway deployment has considered the probability of multihop connectivity among the vehicles and the deployed gateways. In order to allow a vehicle to discover the existence of an Internet gateway and to communicate with the gateway via multihops, a novel data packet routing scheme is proposed based on the VeMAC protocol. The performance of this cross-layer design is evaluated for a multichannel VANET in a highway scenario, mainly in terms of the end-to-end packet delivery delay. The packet queueing at each relay vehicle is considered in the end-to-end delay analysis, and numerical results are presented to study the effect of various parameters, such as the vehicle density and the packet arrival rate, on the performance metrics. The proposed VeMAC protocol is a promising candidate for MAC in VANETs, which can realize many advanced safety applications to enhance the public safety standards and improve the safety level of drivers/passengers and pedestrians on roads. On the other hand, the proposed gateway placement strategy and packet routing scheme represent a strong step toward providing reliable and ubiquitous in-vehicle Internet connectivity.
