As digital content becomes increasingly pervasive in our daily lives, next-generation organizational tools must be developed to help end users curate that information. The information management tools available today are limited in several ways. They are either restrictive in how users define and organize their data, or they offer few options in how users can view and interact with that data. In this thesis, we introduce a new application geared toward the layman end user to help resolve this lack of personalization when managing data. With this tool, users can store any collection of information (i.e. to do lists, address book, DVD collection), customize how they want to view and browse that data, and create any number of visualizations for the same data set or overlapping sets of data. For example, a user might want to manage an address book for a collection of all contacts, and manage a different set of items involving all research-related items, including colleagues, in another visualization. This tool allows her to do this without duplicating the overlapping data set for contact information of colleagues, enabling her to make changes to an item in one visualization and see that change applied to any other visualization that includes the same item. Moreover, users can import data from other sources, as well as share their data with others either with a visualization, such that the receiver can interact with the visualization the user has already created, or as raw data, such that the receiver can create his or her own visualization of the data.

Delivering quality user experience is the most critical goal of any product development and marketing team in any organization. With the advancement of technologies in the fields of data science and data computation, it is now possible to know users more efficiently and create solutions that satisfy their needs to the fullest. In this thesis, I explore how the digital e-commerce and online content provider companies are utilizing many different personalization methods which are helpful in increasing the rate of successful transactions, however, a similar trend is not visible in SaaS applications. Cloud computation has made software both easily accessible and replaceable, putting a lot of stress on both the value of the product as well as the user experience. Many software companies still follow the traditional approach of creating static personas for product design and marketing purposes and create one fits all solution. Machine/application data, which is continuously generated by the software applications, tracking each and every user activity, can be extremely useful in understanding the user behavior and thus giving companies the ability to create more personalized and adaptive solutions. I explore data generated about a pedagogical website at MIT which is used to support instruction in computation-open to students from all the departments. I applied machine learning algorithms to show that there are different clusters/classes of students in a class. By tracking student activity and performance on class website, it can be predicted which class they belong to. This information can be used to develop customized solutions for all the students.

J, Bredenhann S. "Application of neural networks in pavement management." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51619.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The intent of this thesis is to examine the solving of problems with neural networks. Three cases are investigated: the calculation of a Visual Condition Index (VCI), the determination ofthe reseal need, and the back-calculation of E-moduli from measured deflection basins. The calculation of a Visual Condition Index (VCI) is a very good example of how a neural network can be applied to reach a conclusion through the association of a number of facts with one single outcome. VISual assessments of the road condition are done on a yearly basis and the Assessor gives his impression of the condition of a road. A neural network simulates the association between the inputs of elements of distress on the road and the eventual assessment of the overall condition expressed as the VCI, very well. Reseal need is determined by the Provincial Administration: Western Cape (PAWC) with a Reseal Expert System. Data produced by the expert system was used to train a neural network to determine the reseal need. The strength of using these two methods in combination is shown. Meaningful results could not be obtained due to insufficient data in certain categories. Deflection measurements with a Falling Weight Deflectometer are meaningful indicators of pavement strength. Back-calculation is used to calculate E-moduli of pavement layers which can be used in a mechanistic approach to estimate remaining pavement life from pavement response. Conventional backcalculation programs, when implemented in a pavement management system, result in very long computing times due to the large volumes of data available. Neural networks offer the alternative of very fast processing, making the implementation of back-calculation in real-time possible. It is shown that neural networks can back-calculate E-moduli, but with varying degrees of success. The main problem identified is the basis on which the dataset used to train neural networks, is generated using linear elastic theory. The biggest limitation in the linear elastic theory is that non-linear and stress dependent behaviour of materials cannot be simulated, two aspects that have a major influence on the back-calculated E-moduli. Improvements in the data generation process using a theory that accommodates non-linear and stress dependent behaviour of materials may result in improved performance of the neural networks. It is also shown that it is very difficult to design a single neural network that can be successfully used on all the possible pavement types. It is better to identify representative pavement types and train neural networks for each of these. Neural networks can be applied with success in the pavement management field and the combination of Expert Systems, Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic can be a very powerful method to solve complicated problems. Care should be taken in the design of the neural networks and a good understanding ofthe data is a prerequisite for success.

Under the influence of the trend of knowledge-based economy, intellectual capital has played a major role. How to use the intellectual capital to get more benefits for organizations is important rather than just having a lot of money. In recent years, the government tries to apply business model to the management of cultural and educational institutes, intending to use techniques of business management on the real practice of cultural and educational institutes. Currently, museums in Taiwan are getting more and more multi-directional. Hence how to set up the management strategy is important. There are many models and techniques of management, and knowledge management is now the focus. With its emphasis on the operating procedures, and combination with professional techniques, it can increase the beneficial potential of a business. By the emphasis of the government and the trend of knowledge-based economy, some museums in Taiwan start to apply the knowledge management techniques to its management and operation. Although the theory of knowledge management is borrowed from the knowledge of business, the idea and conception about “knowledge” in museums are different from those in business. Therefore, the problems they have encountered are also quite different. The study intends to investigate the application of knowledge management in two museums in Taiwan, National Museum of History, and National Museum of Natural Science. The study shows that the lack of communication and insufficient knowledge about knowledge management are the major factors that leads to the practice failure of knowledge management. To solve the two problems, the study offers a few suggestions, and hope to outline a model of knowledge management for the reference of the museums in Taiwan.

In the first part of this dissertation, the perspectives of the future, I present the orientation of future business world that will be a customer satisfaction era. I argue that an enterprise would benefit from the global competitiveness “customer satisfaction”. In the second part of this dissertation, customer satisfaction development, I present theoretical models for the relationships between employee satisfaction, external customer satisfaction, revenue enhancement and profitability. I also offer practical developing and managing suggestions for an enterprise in achieving internal employee satisfaction as well as external customer satisfaction. This dissertation addressed the components of both internal customer satisfaction and external customer satisfaction. The categories of external customer satisfaction include: strategic intelligence system, total quality management, service determinant’s management, and corporate image. The categories of internal customer satisfaction include: customer satisfaction oriented corporate mission and far-sighted vision, obsessive leadership, customer satisfaction corporate culture, and customer satisfaction human resource management and development scheme. The highly satisfied employees are the keystones of external customer satisfaction. The customer dissatisfaction is an enterprise’s crisis as well as opportunity. In the third part of this dissertation, I discuss the variables to customer dissatisfaction and provide practical suggestions for mitigating the potential dissatisfaction. An enterprise’s effective and sincere reactions might transform customer dissatisfaction into customer satisfaction. Therefore, the measuring customer satisfaction performance activities and strategic intelligence system might play an important role for an enterprise’s continuous improvement. Customer satisfaction management and development plays a significant role for the improvement of auto industry. The final part of this paper presents customer satisfaction management, development and application in the auto industry as the best practice model. Besides the efforts of private sector business, the public administration/government may also benefit from total satisfaction management and development actively for improving national competitiveness in the face of global competition. I present it in the extention part.

Vertical handoff is one of the most challenging issues in heterogeneous network environments. There are many researches on this issue, but they still have some drawbacks such as low efficiency of utilization of the wireless network resources and can not satisfy each application’s requirements. This paper proposes a mechanism that takes each application into consideration. Every application can choose its own network interfaces by its requirements. The proposed scheme has the advantages of satisfying all the applications requests and simultaneously uses multiple interfaces to increase the utilization of interfaces. We measure the performance of applications under different networks to see if the network is suitable for the application.

Currently, management of interface often focuses on only single activity, influences between activities are ignored. An interface problem will relate to two or more activities, in order to solve this interface problem effectively it is better to manage these related activities simultaneously. In this research author comprehend manage procedures and process of industry practice by real case interview, than combine it with idea of existing researches in grouping management of interface activities. To make a grouping management plan for related interface activities at the start of project, so that managers can select proper measures in any phase of project. In order to assist the managers manage directly to critical interface problems and deal with enormous data of interface, author also set up a format of “Interface Event Report” to record the influence on project duration made by interfaces.

Full textNowadays, technology plays an important role in people’s life. It has shown us that it could considerably facilitate our lives and help us with our tasks and interactions. In the academic sector, some individuals will have a greater charge of creating and organizing social interactions, this is the case of the director of a master course. Indeed his position requires constantly creating and managing gatherings such as meetings, jury meetings and events. That is the reason of creating this platform. The main goal was to simplify intercommunication. Through this solution, master director can now easily access and manage their schedules and appointments according to their calendars, generate postmeeting documents directly from the platform, thus avoiding waste of time, energy and the risk of having the information incorrectly transmitted. The solution also allows the director to monitor at any time the people involved in his master course, such as students and professors and to consult their specific informations such as their curricular units, their level and even their thesis subject titles. This solution aims at being an all-purpose tool to organize, simplify and expand the Master director’s management process.
O principal objetivo é simplificar a intercomunicação.

Because of the integration of the information technology, educational environment has become more and more multiplied. Through the convenience of the networks, the communicating medium between teachers and students has also become two-way interactive model from the original one-way conveying model. Thus, no matter the purpose is on the network education or the communication between each other, “Education Blogs” has eventually become the imperative platform for teachers, students, and the parents. Not only setting the web page for a class helps the school convey the information and the announcement, but also does it achieve a marked effect within teachers, students, and the parents. The researcher found that whether the class web page can be promoted depend on the internet platform is friendly or not. According to the reference, the web page is almost one-way information conveying oriented and has less interaction with the users. Furthermore, the unfamiliarness to the web page editing software and the deficiency of software for designing internet pages are the reasons that hold back the teachers to set up a class internet page. In the age of Web 2.0, the rise of a blog becomes the most important characteristic. It emphasizes user-centered trait, in other word, the users can surf the web pages as ones pleases. In order to create a best two-way communicating model, teachers can use the blog as an educational platform to make their pedagogic career get half the results with twice the effort. The study aimed at solving the difficulties of managing a class blog for a teacher by operating a managing platform with the characteristics of Web 2.0. And the purpose of this research can be separated as three parts: First, to discuss and induce the meaning of classroom management so as to generalize classroom management strategies. Second, the purpose is to analyze the content of the class blog at intermediate information seed schools in Taipei County. The researcher will use questionnaires to examine the required items of a class web page to facilitate the connotative items for a class web page. And third, the researcher will adopt the pedagogic systemized model to reconstruct the managing platform for classroom management, assess the practicalness of the managing platform, and make progress on the development. By so doing, this can reduce the teachers’ stress from designing the class blog, and advance the effectiveness of the classroom management.

Full textData and the use thereof, is considered to be a source of competitive advantage for organisations. In order to achieve this it needs to be managed appropriately, and existing literature considers enterprise information management (EIM) to be the foundation for organisations to manage information successfully. (For the purposes of this dissertation, data and information will be treated as analogous concepts.) Key contributing factors to the success of EIM have been identified as ensuring data governance is in place, and that there is a focus on data quality. Within EIM, a key set of data that must be managed effectively is customer data. In many organisations – including the financial services organisation that is the focus of this study – customer data is held in disparate systems across the organisation. Creating a single view of how customers interact with an organisation is deemed of crucial importance for future organisational growth, and the initiatives that organisations undertake to create this view is referred to in the literature as customer data integration (CDI). In order for CDI to be successful, master data management (MDM) needs to be addressed; this will ensure that core data is managed consistently across the disparate systems. This study sought to determine how the concepts of EIM, CDI and MDM were being applied in the organisation under review, and how closely this application matched the recommendations of the literature. In addition, the study sought to uncover additional factors that had an impact on customer data integration, and information management in general, in the organisation. What was found is that in the organisation in question, how information management is being addressed is consistent with the literature in some areas – primarily the importance of a single view of customer and the supporting roles of information governance and data quality – but divergent in others, the key area being that there is no EIM strategy in the organisation that drives a consolidated approach to information management. Organisational culture was also highlighted by the literature as being a critical influencer on how information is managed, and this was supported by the findings. Additional factors that were found to have a significant influence on data management – which were not highlighted by the literature – included the importance of processes, and especially for CDI the critical role played by legislation, in particular the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA). An additional crucial factor, again not highlighted by the literature, is the difficulty organisations have in placing an actual financial value on the use of information. Although intrinsically it is understood that information is valuable, the difficulty in ascribing an explicit value to it is a key inhibitor (in conjunction with organisational culture), to the organisation initiating data management projects at a strategic level, and instead having to address data management as a component of projects driven by individual business units.

Application of Knowledge Management on Performance Appraisal and Management System Abstract The goal of competitive strategy is to create competitive advantages and gain the maximum value. On the other hand, competitive advantage lies in differentiation which originates from exclusive “core competence and resource”. In fact, what so called “core competence and resource” tightly relates to “knowledge” because to compare with other resource, knowledge has the characteristics of being “scarce”, “difficult to imitate” “unable to copy”, and “granted with exclusive rights” (Hsu Shihchun, 2000) and these are the essential elements for a company to remain its competitive advantages. Thus, Knowledge Management (KM) determines powerfully the survival of a company. In terms of business management, the ultimate goal of Performance Management System is to enhance organization efficiency which is built on the integration and improvement of business operation. It is also an important system aiming for improving or strengthening the system of “core competence and resource” building. This coincides with the nature of knowledge management and benefits each other. Management activities such as production, marketing, R&D, accounting, purchasing, and human resource tie with “the import , capture , retrieval , access , use , sharing , creation of knowledge” and this evidently indicates the popularity and long existence of KM activities. This study attempted to use KM Process as the base to construct a case study model with theoretical and practical application through the application demand of Knowledge Technology (KT). Before constructing the model, this study first reviewed the previous literature and understood the definition of KM and Performance Appraisal and Management. With the help of diagnosis tool, Six Box Model (Weisbord, 1976), we improved the study model of Knowledge Based Performance Appraisal and Management System (KBPAMS). Meanwhile, we adopted dimensional elements to compile an ideal “Study Form for KBPAMS.” We also selected certain companies as the cases to examine the existing system and conducted one by one in-depth interviews with employees of chosen companies. Due to the limitations on study time and human resources, random sampling as well as convenience sampling were excluded; purposive sampling was chosen to understand the actual demand and opinions of workers. Next, Flow Chart and handling description were two methods of presentation to construct a simple “KBPAMS” case study model as the reference for future establishment of information system. In the end, we used the improvement of the “KBPAMS” case study model. To analyze the six dimensional elements of the “KBPAMS” and studied it by open-system-view. Four suggestions were offered for conclusion as follows: 1.Returning to the humanity; 2.Integrating business culture and creating business characteristics; 3.long-term Investing on KBPAMS; 4.Gaining full-support from the top-manager. Keywords: Knowledge Management (KM), Knowledge Technology (KT), Performance Appraisal and Management, Performance Appraisal System (PAS)

Today’s software industry has been seeing the rapid development in recent decade with robust progress of national economy. Along with the constant developing of information technology, IT has been paid more and more enterprise’s attention. It is so exciting to find that a large number of IT projects in China have launched the implementation, but the actual results are often unsatisfactory. China’s 2006 statistics show that less than 48%of IT projects get success. Now, due to fast change on technology, competitions among enterprises grow more and more. With increasing scope and complexity, software projects are often dogged by not meeting customer real needs, huge cost overrun, or delay. How to control efficiently risks occurred during projects is now a major task for most software enterprises. Risk management is an important part of project management, which includes 9 knowledge areas. Through scientific and efficient risk management on software projects, potential risks can be identified clearly and applicable preventative actions will take accordingly. Therefore, risks can be prevented in advance or impacts on the project can be relieved in a certain degree. It's an efficient tool for enterprise to improve project efficiency, monitor project progress and control project costs. The basic theory for software project risk management was studied in this article, including risk identification, risk analysis, risk control planning, risk tracking, and risk response and control. In the recent years, influenced by the variations of the international environment, domestic enterprises cannot surpass in cost and quality anymore. In replacement, it’s “Speed” that turns to be the trend of new competition ability. Most present Product Data management systems ordinarily input files and data through known procedures to be automated. This method cannot satisfy the demands for production information in precision, clearness and customization. Consequently, only by using product structure oriented Product Data management to realize the ideal of Common Database and Concurrent Engineering can enterprises accelerate the speed of new product appearances on market. Therefore, this thesis advocates a system model of “Application of Product Development Management System in analog ICs Design Industry”. By using corresponding program techniques of internet, global information network and circuit simulation, aiming at the possible problems resulting from R&D process and the compatibility of customer products, etc. adding the system model in Product Development Management to reduce the rate of correction after the product design and production in order to meet customers’ demands. The Results of this study are: (1)The participating teams of strategic alliance can develop product with integrated enterprise subject to the respective product characteristics.(2) Provide Valatie information of product life cycle for customers to develop connected products.(3)Through the function of circuit simulation, the model can verify with customers’ product instantly to save time and cost and upgrade(increase) the design efficiency & quality.(4)Help customers to use new analog ICs products by building up learning courses.(5)Forecast customers’ demands and development trend and strengthen the communication with remote customers to create good customer relationship, get products into the international market easier and enhance competition ability. Therefore, for analog ICs design industry, different from the traditional way that reaches the product stability through long period of product testing after the product design, this customer communication & product simulation interface advocated in this thesis can carry out a better product quality, shorten product R&D period and eventually strengthen the competition ability.

To bridge the performance gap between disks and microprocessors, conventional operating systems employed memory cache in file systems and virtual memory management systems. However, since the system kernels do not know applications'' access patterns, the fixed memory-cache management scheme cannot meet all applications'' needs. Application performance and system throughout are thus degraded. This dissertation proposes a new virtual memory management system, the hipec system, to effectively increase the application performance and system throughout. Hipec partitions the conventional virtual memory management scheme into two levels: the kernel only handles the allocations of memory cache, while the user applications are responsible for managing the allocated cache. Hipec includes two major implementations. The first is the in-kernel strategy interpreter for supporting application-navigated virtual memory management. The strategy interpreter also protects the system from misbehaved or malicious applications. The second is the kernel page-frame allocation policy, which can fairly share page frames among all running applications. In addition, in order to help application designers to observe the application access patterns, two auxiliary tools are implemented. Application designers, therefore, can tune the caching strategies to meet applications'' specific needs. From empirical evaluations, hipec can improve the application performance and system throughput.
