This paper deals with the properties and applications of determinants recognizing them as an important tool to synthesize the representation and calculation of some functions and equations in the field of analytical geometry and linear algebra. In the first chapters we present some of the history of determinants, the mathematicians who contributed in its evolution and the need that generated the beginning of their study. Then we proceed, the definition of determining and calculating the determinants from the theorem of Laplace via recurrence as well as the handy device for determining Sarrus third order. In the next chapter, we present the properties, a total of twelve, with their statements and examples, as they will be used in applications of determinants. Soon after, it presents a number of applications in linear algebra, eg, linear dependence and independence, inverse matrix, solution of linear systems (Cramer's Rule) and cross product; addition to applications in analytical geometry, such as alignment condition of three points of the parallelogram area and volume of the parallelepiped. Finally, it is concluded that it is essential the teacher of the second grade of high school address in their classes a little history, calling students' attention to mathematicians who have excelled in this study; expose the applications of determinants, arousing the curiosity of their students and interest in the area of linear algebra and analytic geometry.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with situations where we can define trace-class transfer oper- ators, and extract useful information from their determinants. The first topic is on Lyapunov exponents of random products of matrices. We obtain a new expression for the Lyapunov exponent of a continuous family of matrices, and a slightly different version of existing work for the discrete case. The second topic explores possibilities of using similar theory to approximate eigen- functions of the Laplacian for surfaces of constant negative curvature. The third topic gives a variety of approximations of Mahler measures, which occur in many different areas of mathematics, by manipulating the integrals into a form that can be numerically integrated using work of Pollicott and Jenkinson. The final topic of the thesis works out the details of earlier ideas of Pollicott, to give a method for the numerical approximation of entropy rates of hidden Markov processes.

Abstract:
Although institutional care has started to be outmoded in the developed countries with development of different models of care, it still has a considerable place in the developing countries such as Turkey. This is because, changes in the demographic structure, extended family, and urban development of Turkey has brought about several aging problems leading older adults to end up in institutions. Loneliness was one of the significant reasons given in the Social Inquiry Survey of Applicants of Darulaceze Old-Age Institution and the basis for a micro level analysis in this study. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to determine the predictors of loneliness, including age, the state of living alone, functional independence, education, and gender. Analysis of the results indicated that these predictors have significant effects on the loneliness predominantly defined by social factors rather than medical factors. In addition, the meso and macro level analyses were employed to control the micro level analysis and see a general picture of institutional care. Thus, an academic example of diagnosing the main reasons behind the institutional care was presented to understand the context of aging in Turkey.

Abstract:
Genetic modification of plastids in the model plant tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) has demonstrated that numerous foreign gene products can accumulate to high levels in this setting. Plastid biotechnology is maturing to encompass the improvement of food and feed species and the production of biopharmaceutical proteins for oral delivery necessitating development of stable transplastomic edible plants. In the interest of establishing an edible platform we have investigated the use of native and foreign regulatory elements in relation to foreign gene expression in plastids. Multiple sequence alignments of intergenic regions for 20 species of angiosperm showed that despite 95% identity in the coding region, identity in the psbA upstream region is 59% across all taxa examined, other gene coding regions displayed sequence identity of 80-97%, whereas the non-coding regions were 45-79% suggesting that our physical data can be extrapolated beyond the model presented. We found that by exchanging psbA untranslated regions (UTRs) between N. tabacum and lettuce (Lactuca sativa), the expression of the CTB-proinsulin (CTB-Pins) monocistronic transcript declined by 84% and foreign protein accumulation was reduced by as much as 97% in mature leaves. Polyribosome association assays suggest that ribosome-free transgenic transcripts are stabilized where the native UTR is employed. RNA EMSA revealed that binding proteins interacted with psbA 5' UTRs in a species specific manner and the half life of the L. sativa 5'UTR-CTB-Pins mRNA was reduced by 3.7 fold in N. tabacum stromal extracts. Our data indicate that the use of species-specific regulatory elements could lead to establishment of reproducible plastid transformation in desirable target species such as L. sativa. Using transplastomic L. sativa for oral delivery of bioencapsulated CTB-Pins we delayed the onset of diabetes in NOD mice when retinyl acetate supplement was provided compared to untouched mice. In this 30 week study we monitored blood glucose levels and evaluated the in vitro suppressive capacity of regulatory T cells isolated from diabetic mice. Whether delay or prevention was achieved appeared to be a function of antigen dose as high dose resulted in a nine week delay of onset while low dose reduced the incidence of diabetes by 36%. In addition we have evaluated metabolic engineering in the N. tabacum model where we generated cis-genic lines expressing nucleus-encoded methionine pathway enzymes in plastids. Transplastomic expression of Cystathionine gamma-Synthase led to a three-fold increase in enzyme activity and a doubling of methionine content in leaves without a deleterious phenotype. In exploring molecular mechanisms supporting gene expression in plastids and applying transplastomic technology to real human problems this work seeks address the potential of plastid biotechnology for improvement of commodity crops and production of biopharmaceuticals.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The increased pervasiveness of information communication and technology and increasing internet access creates anticipation for how contemporary technologies can address critical developmental problems. Non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of death globally, even though more than 40% of the deaths are premature and avoidable. Diabetes is such a disease that causes 80% of non-communicable disease deaths in low and middle-income countries. Diabetes is also the leading cause of death in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Diabetes thus constitutes a challenge to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 that focuses on health and well-being for all people, at all ages. The potential of technology, such as the use of m-health applications, is recognised as a means to advance the Sustainable Development Goals through supporting health systems in all countries.

Abstract:
Posterior analysis in Bayesian model averaging (BMA) applications often includes the assessment of measures of jointness (joint inclusion) across covariates. We link the discussion of jointness measures in the econometric literature to the literature on association rules in data mining exercises. We analyze a group of alternative jointness measures that include those proposed in the BMA literature and several others put forward in the field of data mining. The way these measures address the joint exclusion of covariates appears particularly important in terms of the conclusions that can be drawn from them. Using a dataset of economic growth determinants, we assess how the measurement of jointness in BMA can affect inference about the structure of bivariate inclusion patterns across covariates. Al-Dmour, Rand. "An integration model for identifying the determinants of the adoption and implementation level of HRIS applications and its effectiveness in business organisations in Jordan." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/9222.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the influence of firms’ internal and external environmental factors upon their adoption of HRIS behaviour (i.e., the variation between adopters and non-adopters) and the level of implementation of HRIS applications and its effectiveness. An integrated conceptual framework was developed for the factors that determine the organisation’s adoption and the level of practice of HRIS applications. This framework integrates ideas and elements from the Diffusion of innovation Theory (DOI) and technology organization environment (TOE) model, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and the IT studies in the area of HRM. Data were collected through structured-directed interviews with 236 respondents. The survey units were the shareholding companies in Jordan, and the key single respondents approach was employed. The findings of the study support that internal and external environmental factors are related not only to adoption of HRIS behaviour (i.e., the difference between adopters and non-adopters), but also to the level of implementing of HRIS applications. In comparison to each environmental dimension acting alone, the integration approach of the two internal and external dimensions gives better explanation not only of the prediction of the level of implementing of HRIS applications, but also of the prediction of adoption behaviour. Therefore, a better understanding of adoption of HRIS behaviour and the level of implementing of HRIS applications requires that firms’ environmental factors be viewed as whole (i.e., the interaction of the internal and external dimension) rather than being isolated fragments (i.e., only a single dimension). The current research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by enhancing current understanding of the organisational adoption of HRIS, which is an under-researched area in Jordan as a developing country. By employing analytical tools based on Rogers’s Innovation Diffusion Theory , UTAUT, TOE , and the findings of empirical studies of IT adoption, evidence confirms that the adoption of HRIS in the business organisations depends largely on interaction of internal and external environmental factors and the findings support the need for an integrated view of the adoption phenomenon. In that respect, this study also attempts to make an important theoretical contribution towards articulating differences in the determinants of adoption and the level of implementations of HRIS applications and its effectiveness.

This paper wants to provide subsidies to the Mathematics teacher of Basic Education, regarding to Determinants. From a consistent theoretical basis, it builds the concept of Determinant and deducts its main properties. Subsequently, it presents some of its applications, which can be explored in High School, linked to the historical context in which they were developed, aiming to make learning of Determinants more significant. Thereby, the Chapter 1 presents basic concepts of Linear Algebra, which are prerequisites for the definition and study of the Determinant Function, as well as of its properties, which are developed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3, on the other hand, promotes connections of Determinants with other middle-level mathematical concepts related to the own Linear Algebra and Analytic and Euclidean Geometry, each one with a specific historical introduction.

The thesis is structured into 5 chapters as follows: Chapter 1 is an introduction to the tools and methods we use most frequently. Chapter 2 Pairs of k-free Numbers, consecutive square-full Numbers. In this chapter, we refine the approximate determinant method by Heath-Brown. We present applications to asymptotic formulas for consecutive k-free integers, and more generally for k-free integers represented by r-tuples of linear forms. We also show how the method can be used to derive an upper bound for the number of consecutive square-full integers. Finally, we apply the method to make a statement about the size of the fundamental solution of Pell equations. Chapter 3 Power-Free Values of Polynomials. A conjecture by Erdös states that for any irreducible polynomial f of degree d≥3 with no fixed (d-1)-th power prime divisor, there are infinfinitely many primes p such that f(p) is (d-1)-free. We prove this conjecture and derive the corresponding asymptotic formulas. Chapter 4 Integer Points on Bilinear and Trilinear Equations. In the fourth chapter, we derive upper bounds for the number of integer solutions on bilinear or trilinear forms. Chapter 5 In the fifth chapter, we present a method to count the monomials that occur in the projective determinant method when the method is applied to cubic varieties.

Shah, S. H. "Discovery and application of genetic determinants of cardiovascular disease risk factors." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1417181/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of my PhD has been two-‐fold: First, to improve the understanding of the biology behind a well-‐known cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor -‐ left ventricular mass, by identifying novel genetic loci associated with this risk factor. A large-‐scale association meta-‐analysis in over 10,000 individuals identified four novel loci associated with electrocardiographically-‐determined left ventricular mass. Second, to explore the application of known genetic determinants of the main blood lipid fractions, the latter being well-‐known CVD risk factors and therapeutic targets. I assess the use of genetic variants associated with total cholesterol, low-‐ density lipoprotein-‐cholesterol (LDL-‐C), high-‐density lipoprotein-‐cholesterol (HDL-‐C) and triglycerides for discriminating healthy individuals from those that have a high absolute risk of CVD, those that require lipid-‐lowering medication, and those that have a coronary event. The lipid genetic variants showed poor discriminatory ability for all three outcomes and provided no improvement over the widely-‐used, non-‐ genetic Framingham 10 year CVD risk score. Lipid-‐associated genetic variants were also used to generate genetic risk score instruments for LDL-‐C, HDL-‐C and triglycerides, which were applied in a Mendelian randomisation analysis to determine their causal relationship with carotid-‐intima media thickness (CIMT). CIMT has been a widely used surrogate outcome measure in clinical trials of CVD drugs. LDL-‐C-‐lowering drugs have shown to reduce CIMT progression and CHD risk in clinical trials. However, the extent of any causal association between HDL-‐C or triglycerides and CIMT is unclear. The results from this MR analysis support a casual relationship with LDL-‐C, but not with HDL-‐C and triglycerides, which may indicate that CIMT is a less useful surrogate end point in clinical trials of primarily HDL-‐C or triglyceride modifying therapies.

Abstract:
The current study investigated the determinants of Internet services’ adoption and use among high school learners in the East London Education District, in the Eastern Cape. Underpinned by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, the research questions included: (1) What is the effect of performance expectancy on the learner’s intention to adopt and use Internet services? (2) What degree of variation exists for effort expectancy on the learner’s intention to adopt and use Internet services? (3) How much of the determinants explain the usage of Internet services? (4) Which is (are) the best predictor(s) of Internet service usage given a set of determinants? (5) What is the effect of confounding variables (if any) on Internet services’ adoption and usage? (6) Which model can be designed based on the best predictor(s) of Internet services’ adoption and usage for secondary school learners? A quantitative approach based on the positivist paradigm was used to quantify the relationships among various factors that contribute to Internet services’ adoption and use. The research design used was a survey. Data were collected through structured questionnaires. Out of 286 questionnaires issued, the response rate was 40.6%. The study sample size was 116 high school learners using simple random sampling. The data was analysed using the multiple regression analysis technique, and Pearson correlations. Out of the four determinants from the UTAUT, performance expectancy was the strongest predictor of intention to adopt Internet services. Large positive correlations ranging from r = 0.638 up to r = 0.989 were found among performance expectancy and effort expectancy variables towards the intention to use Internet services, significant at p < 0.05. To enhance the efficiency of the UTAUT model, this study has designed the Adoption and Application of Technology for Learning (AATL) model, which added the price of Internet, persistent use of Internet, and perceptions about Internet use.

Abstract:
With the exponentially growing amount of data, sampling remains the most relevant method to learn about populations. Sometimes, larger sample size is needed to generate more precise results and to exclude the possibility of missing key information. The problem lies in the fact that sampling large number may be a principal reason of wasting time.In this thesis, our aim is to build bridges between applications of statistics and k-Determinantal Point Process(k-DPP) which is defined through a matrix kernel. We have proposed different applications for sampling large data sets basing on k-DPP, which is a conditional DPP that models only sets of cardinality k. The goal is to select diverse sets that cover a much greater set of objects in polynomial time. This can be achieved by constructing different Markov chains which have the k-DPPs as their stationary distribution. The first application consists in sampling a subset of species in a phylogenetic tree by avoiding redundancy. By defining the k-DPP via an intersection kernel, the results provide a fast mixing sampler for k-DPP, for which a polynomial bound on the mixing time is presented and depends on the height of the phylogenetic tree. The second application aims to clarify how k-DPPs offer a powerful approach to find a diverse subset of nodes in large connected graph which authorizes getting an outline of different types of information related to the ground set. A polynomial bound on the mixing time of the proposed Markov chain is given where the kernel used here is the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse of the normalized Laplacian matrix. The resulting mixing time is attained under certain conditions on the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix. The third one purposes to use the fixed cardinality DPP in experimental designs as a tool to study a Latin Hypercube Sampling(LHS) of order n. The key is to propose a DPP kernel that establishes the negative correlations between the selected points and preserve the constraint of the design which is strictly confirmed by the occurrence of each point exactly once in each hyperplane. Then by creating a new Markov chain which has n-DPP as its stationary distribution, we determine the number of steps required to build a LHS with accordance to n-DPP

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this thesis is to account for the fertility decline among Abagusii women in South-western Kenya. The motivation behind the study was based on the fact that the fertility trends associated with this group of people had not been studied before. This is surprising because the Abagusii recorded one of the world's highest total fertility rates of 10.4 in 1979 (Omosa 1994; Osiemo 1986; Oucho 1990), but has also experienced significant fertility decline. The total fertility rate in 2004 stood at 4.7, (Anyara 2009). The analytical framework that is adopted is Stover's (1998) adaptation of the Bongaarts et. al. (1984) Proximate Determinants Model. These determinants such as contraceptive use, post-partum insusceptibility, sexual activity, abortion and sterility represent behavioural and biological variables that affect fertility directly. The manner in which they are employed involves using the index which indicates the extent to which each proximate determinant reduces the fertility of the group in question.

Abstract:
Determinantal point processes (DPPs in short) are probabilistic models that capture negative correlations or repulsion within a set of elements. They tend to generate diverse or distant subsets of elements. This notion of similarity or proximity between elements is defined and stored in the kernel associated with each DPP. This thesis studies these models in a discrete framework, defined on a discrete and finite set of elements. We are interested in their application to image processing, when the initial set of points corresponds to the pixels or the patches of an image. Chapter 1 and 2 introduce determinantal point processes in a general discrete framework, their main properties and the algorithms usually used to sample them, i.e. used to select a subset of points distributed according to the chosen DPP. In this framework, the kernel of a DPP is a matrix. The main algorithm is a spectral algorithm based on the computation of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the DPP kernel. In Chapter 2, we present a sampling algorithm based on a thinning procedure and a Cholesky decomposition but which does not require the spectral decomposition of the kernel. This algorithm is exact and, under certain conditions, competitive with the spectral algorithm. Chapter 3 studies DPPs defined over all the pixels of an image, called Determinantal Pixel Processes (DPixPs). This new framework imposes periodicity and stationarity assumptions that have consequences on the kernel of the process and on properties of the repulsion generated by this kernel. We study this model applied to Gaussian textures synthesis, using shot noise models. In this chapter, we are also interested in the estimation of the DPixP kernel from one or several samples. Chapter 4 explores DPPs defined on the set of patches of an image, that is the family of small square images contained in the image. The aim is to select a proportion of these patches, diverse enough to be representative of the information contained in the image. Such a selection can speed up certain patch-based image processing algorithms, or even improve the quality of existing algorithms that require patch subsampling. We present an application of this question to a texture synthesis algorithm

Sun, Benjamin Boyang. "Genetic determinants of the human plasma proteome and their application in biology and disease." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/269287.

Full text
Abstract:
Proteins are the primary functional units of biology and the direct targets of most drugs, yet there is limited knowledge of the genetic factors determining inter-individual variation in protein levels (protein quantitative trait loci (pQTLs)). Limitations in high-throughput proteomic measurement technology have meant well-powered genome-wide association studies for large number of proteins so far have lagged behind many of the other "omic" studies such as transcriptomics and metabolomics. This is made more challenging by the complexity of human plasma, characterised by high dynamic range spanning several magnitudes of concentrations and a large number of low abundance proteins. By using an expanded high-throughput multiplex aptamer-based proteomic assay with more than twice the proteome coverage of previous studies, I am able to greatly expand on existing knowledge on genetic determinants of human plasma proteins through testing 10.6 million DNA variants against levels of 2,994 proteins in 3,301 individuals. I identify 1,927 genetic associations with 1,478 proteins, replicating many previous associations as well as gaining novel insights into the genetic architecture of the human plasma proteome. I use several approaches to highlight the application of pQTLs to biology and disease. I show several examples linking distant pQTLs to biologically plausible genes and demonstrate the mediation of distant pQTL by local protein levels, highlighting the role of protein-protein interactions. In addition, I find epistatic effects of genetically determined phenotypes (blood group and secretor status) on protein levels. Through linking previous disease associations, I show that disease associated variants are enriched for pQTLs and I provide insights into possible mechanisms underpinning some of the disease loci. Finally, I identify causal roles for protein biomarkers in disease through multivariable Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis, leveraging on the simultaneous measurement of multiple functionally related proteins in a locus to account for potential pleiotropic effects. Whereas MR studies of plasma proteins have been constrained by availability of few suitable genetic instruments, the data generated here remedy this bottleneck by furnishing an extensive toolkit. Overall, the work within this thesis foreshadows major advances in post-genomic science through increasing application of novel bioassay technologies to major population biobanks.

Abstract:
This study is an analysis of the determinants of bilateral trade and foreign direct investment in ASEAN at the time of the establishment of ASEAN Free Trade Area and its enlargement. Beginning with an economic perspective on ASEAN and a review of the literature, the theoretical underpinning of the model is then demonstrated. This confirms that the gravity trade model can be derived from several trade theories. The model is then used to assess ASEAN’s trade pattern in both aggregate and disaggregate level. The results show that, although there is trade diversion regarding its importing activities, the positive effect of ASEAN’s trade creation is higher than the negative effect of its trade diversion. Moreover, the impact of distance is not diminishing over time. The disaggregate model shows that the products that are not convenient to transport have high distant effect. The results from FDI model confirm that the gravity variables are significant determinants of FDI. The negative effect of proximity suggests that there is Vertical-FDI in this region and FDI is complementary to trade. ASEAN should continue to facilitate trade and capital movement among members in order to increase aggregate economic activities and bring economic prosperity to the region in a whole.

The strategic guidelines (or strategic drivers), including the set of values, mission and vision statement, are formulated to direct the organizational actions, guide its strategy and conduct the decision-making process. They are, therefore, fundamental to the whole process of strategic management, especially in modern times, characterized by increasing complexity and high competitiveness. In view of the importance of these elements for organizations, this study aimed to analyze these strategic drivers, explaining the main determinants of its effectiveness and its application in organizations, from the perspective of consulting professionals in strategic management. With this purpose, initially, through literature review were identified the main determinants of the effectiveness of the strategic guidelines, internationally recognized. On that basis, individual interviews were conducted with a group of consultants with extensive experience in the area, in order to capture their perception about the points raised in the specific literature, confronting the theory and the practice. The results indicate a good alignment between the attributes of the strategic drivers highlighted by the respondents and those established in the literature, despite having been found divergences between theory and practice, especially in the design and implementation processes. In this way, opportunities are shown to ensure the effective implementation of the strategic drivers, contributing to the better performance of organizations, and to generate reflections to be considered in the theoretical field.

Emerging financial services continue to challenge traditional financial thinking. With the development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the application of big data technology, Fintech change constants innovation at tremendous speed. It has revolutionized the financial industry and consumer behavior patterns. In recent years, the proportion of consumers and money invested through financial robots has steadily increased. Many consumers replace traditional human management services with Robo-Advisors. Time can be saved in investment strategy and decision making with the characteristics of Robo-Advisors, more comprehensive and timely investment and wealth management information can be obtained through Robo-Advisors. However, with an innovative service model, consumer acceptance is a necessary condition for successful new services. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the key factors affecting consumers' adoption of financial services robots. For the purpose of this study, this study conducted a questionnaire survey, based on the Technology Acceptance Model theory as the research infrastructure, and added the personal innovativeness, personality traits and resistance to change as external variables in an attempt to understand respondents’ preference for Robo-Advisors. The data analysis results show that consumers' behaviors of using financial robots for financial services are quite high. The three external variables for consumer personality traits are all significant. Therefore, it is recommended that the banking industry or financial services institutions should accelerate the introduction of financial robots, thereby improving the level of financial management services.

The emerging technology of smart phones develops quickly in recent years and therefore leads to the popularity of smart phone applications (APPs). Users can download various kinds of APPs from the app store to meet their daily life demands. However, not every smart phone APP can successfully attract consumers to download and use it. Understanding the factors that influence consumers’ adoption of smart phone APPs is an issue worth exploring. This study integrates the factors of diffusion of innovations theory, electronic word of mouth, perceived value and free to explore consumers’ behavioral intention to use smart phone APPs. A questionnaire survey is employed to the participants who had experiences on using smart phone APPs. In addition, structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to examine the proposed hypotheses in our research model. Analytical results show that relative advantage, complexity and trialability have positive impacts on users’ perceived utilitarian value. Secondly, relative advantage, trialability and observability have positive impacts on users’ perceived hedonic value. Finally, personal innovativeness in information technology, electronic word of mouth, subjective norm, perceived value and free have positive impacts on users’ behavioral intention to use smart phone APPs.

"Understanding the Determinants of Success in Mobile Apps Markets." Doctoral diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.29811.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Mobile applications (Apps) markets with App stores have introduced a new approach to define and sell software applications with access to a large body of heterogeneous consumer population. Several distinctive features of mobile App store markets including – (a) highly heterogeneous consumer preferences and values, (b) high consumer cognitive burden of searching a large selection of similar Apps, and (c) continuously updateable product features and price – present a unique opportunity for IS researchers to investigate theoretically motivated research questions in this area. The aim of this dissertation research is to investigate the key determinants of mobile Apps success in App store markets. The dissertation is organized into three distinct and related studies. First, using the key tenets of product portfolio management theory and theory of economies of scope, this study empirically investigates how sellers’ App portfolio strategies are associated with sales performance over time. Second, the sale performance impacts of App product cues, generated from App product descriptions and offered from market formats, are examined using the theories of market signaling and cue utilization. Third, the role of App updates in stimulating consumer demands in the presence of strong ranking effects is appraised. The findings of this dissertation work highlight the impacts of sellers’ App assortment, strategic product description formulation, and long-term App management with price/feature updates on success in App market. The dissertation studies make key contributions to the IS literature by highlighting three key managerially and theoretically important findings related to mobile Apps: (1) diversification across selling categories is a key driver of high survival probability in the top charts, (2) product cues strategically presented in the descriptions have complementary relationships with market cues in influencing App sales, and (3) continuous quality improvements have long-term effects on App success in the presence of strong ranking effects.

Classical and generalized Vandermonde matrices are ubiquitous in mathematics, and various studies on their determinants, inverses, explicit LU factorizations with applications are done recently by many authors. In this thesis we shall focus on two topics: One is generalized Vandermonde matrices revisited and the other is various decompositions of some generalized Vandermonde matrices. In the first topic, we prove the well-known determinant formulas of two types of generalized Vandermonde matrices using only mathematical induction, different from the proofs of Fulin Qian's and Flowe-Harris'. In the second topic, which constitutes the main results of this thesis, we devote ourself to two themes. Firstly, we study a special class which is the transpose of the generalized Vandermonde matrix of the first type and succeed in obtaining its LU factorization in an explicit form. Furthermore, we express the LU factorization into 1-banded factorizations and get the inverse explicitly. Secondly, we consider a totally positive(TP) generalized Vandermonde matrix and obtain its unique LU factorization without using Schur functions. The result is better than Demmel and Koev's which is involved Schur functions. As by-products, we gain the determinant and the inverse of the required matrix and express any Schur function in an explicit form. Basing on the above result, we obtain a way to calculate Kostka numbers by expanding Schur functions.

Full text
Abstract:
In excitable cells, high-voltage activated calcium channels (CaV1/CaV2) are essential for translating electrical signals into biological responses. These channels are multimeric subunit protein complexes composed of a main pore-forming α1 subunit, which associates with auxiliary β, γ, and α2δ subunits. CaV1/CaV2 channels are critical for the initiation of many vital physiological processes. Molecules that modulate CaV1/CaV2 channel activity can dramatically alter cellular physiology and are used to treat cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Rad/Rem/Rem2/Gem (RGK) proteins are Ras-like monomeric GTPases that potently and non-selectively inhibit all CaV1/CaV2 channels. Despite being studied by several groups, the mechanism underlying this inhibition has yet to be fully understood. All RGK proteins bind directly to the auxiliary β subunits, and it was generally assumed that this RGK/β interaction is required for calcium channel inhibition. A comprehensive understanding of how RGK proteins inhibit calcium channels will not only enhance our perspectives on their (patho)physiological roles but could also advance their practical use as calcium channel blockers (CCBs). Using a mutated β subunit (βTM), which selectively loses the ability to interact with RGKs, we show that the RGK protein, Rem, inhibits CaV1.2 channels by utilizing both β-binding-dependent (BBD) and direct α1C-binding-dependent mechanisms (ABD). Previous studies have demonstrated that Rem inhibits CaV1.2 channels by 1) decreasing the number of channels on the cell surface, 2) reducing the channel’s open probability and 3) immobilizing their voltage sensors. Here, we identify a novel Rem binding site on the distal end of the α1C N-terminus that mediates ABD inhibition by reducing CaV1.2 voltage sensor movement, without significantly affecting the other two mechanistic signatures of Rem inhibition of CaV1.2. The molecular determinants of Rem required for BBD CaV1.2 inhibition are the distal C-terminus and the guanine nucleotide-binding domain (G-domain), which interact with the plasma membrane and CaVβ, respectively. Here, we determine that the Rem G-domain and distal C-terminus also mediate ABD CaV1.2 inhibition. For this mode of inhibition the Rem distal C-terminus interacts with α1C N-terminus to anchor the G-domain, which presumably interacts with an as-yet-unidentified site. To profile the relative prevalence of BBD and ABD of inhibition across the RGK and CaV1/CaV2 channel families we compared the impact of all four RGKs on currents through recombinant CaV1.3, CaV2.1, CaV2.2 channels, reconstituted with either wt β2a or β2aTM, respectively. When reconstituted with β2aTM, CaV1.3 and CaV2.1 were completely refractory to all four RGKs indicating these channels display only β-binding-dependent mechanisms of inhibition. CaV2.2 channels reconstituted with β2aTM displayed a strong inhibition solely to Rad, identifying another example of β-binding-independent regulation of a CaV channel by an RGK protein. The results reveal latent capabilities of distinct RGKs to selectively inhibit particular CaV1/CaV2 channels in an isoform-specific manner. These dormant capabilities may be exploitable to develop novel genetically-encoded isoform-selective CaV1/CaV2 channel inhibitors.

The mobile technology develops rapidly worldwide, while the broadband mobile applications integrate with many ICT application types, making a substantial change in the traditional business, which shows an emerging issue that can not be ignored. Most previous literature about the mobile applications focus on the individual level, yet the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the most important pillar of domestic economic development, this study aims to explore the critical factors of broadband mobile application adopting in SMEs, and thus to contribute to the further popularization, development and innovation. Since personal mobile devices are required for the broadband mobile applications’ operations, the willingness of employees is highly related to the success of enterprises to adopt. To explore this issue, this study integrated the Technology - Organization - Environment (TOE) framework, the Diffusion of Innovation Theory and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) to derive an innovative STOE model, expecting to be able to take a more comprehensive view as well as to provide a useful model for the future studies of mobile application and innovation. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and AMOS were used to analysis the research data; in addition, qualitative interviews were conducted to further verify the STOE model and to understand SMEs’ actual attitudes and ideas of determinants.

Communication is essential need to the society and such a need has pushed the development of the networking industry. Thanks to the fast technological innovation, many value-added services are provided by the key industrial players and hence grow the industry output. For example, smartphone has attracted users through abundant applications and the coming Cloud Computing would create many more value-added applications. The boom of mobile internet need and industry triggers our research by first asking why mobile internet had launched in the year of 2000 but failed to take off mainly due to lack of cooperation among different networking players. We therefore empirically explore if a right form of cooperation would create value for the transacting parties. By applying event study to analyze a set of announcements of inter-firm technological cooperation, we are able to test our hypotheses that different types of cooperation would affect transacting parties stock performances. We found that market responds significantly positive to the technology collaboration deals that adopt equity-based form. In addition, technology deals along vertical chain would enjoy positive stock returns than that of horizontal type. Finally, cross-border transactions with joint venture arrangement would exert better stock return than adopting acquisition. Implications to networking industry players and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

The technology innovation, growth of market, and the development of its functions, had led to almost people in Taiwan to have one smartphone on hands. And even more, the smartphone addicted, or mobile phone overuse scene, can be seen in most places where people around. The smartphone had not only changed the way people interact, but left the new patterns of payment, mobile payment, to emerge. As a matter of fact, the payment industry and enterprises are aiming mobile payment as most important business development for the next decade. The mobile payment chain covered retail, e-commerce, telecommunications, financial services, and information industry, etc. It had been successfully launched and promoted in some foreign countries and even in China, however, Taiwan is still in the early stage of development. In year 2015, the mobile payment industry regarded it as the kick-off year for mobile payment era. Not only technology development but also government regulation had been implemented and soared to be ready. However, at the other hand, the consumers’ acceptance is not yet significant, the conversion of payment methods seemed to be taken place slowly. This article will focus on consumer behaviors, and research both internal and external factors influencing consumers in using mobile payment. We use quantitative analysis as research methods, and use Technology and Innovation Acceptance Model (TAM) as theoretical basis. While in conducting the research, we analyze the factors impacting consumer’s use of new payment instruments, and account the factors of credit risk, including financial and performance factors in the "perceived risk" model to evaluate the possible effects. Finally, we collect the ethnic differences in using mobile payment through analysis of consumer profiles, and aggregate the finding to conclusions and recommendations, which to offer an in-depth views in consumer’s using mobile payment.

Normally, capital structure can be classified as two types of categories—debt and equity. In the past, the theories related to capital structure include the pecking order theory and the trade-off theory. From the above-mentioned theories, it’s quite obvious for us to realize that credit plays a rather important role for both a company and an individual person. Therefore, this research is primarily about the factors which have direct effects on private credit ratio of bank. According to the data from 129 countries, we found the creditor rights can promote the desire for extending credit of the enterprise by the improvement of legal institution and decrease of information asymmetry. By means of the Quantile Regression method proposed by Koenker and Bassett (1978), we also found that in the countries of private credit degree below medium-high, the more the private credit increment of the degree is, the more the creditor rights’ influence could increase; on the other hand, in the countries of private credit degree above medium-high, the more the private credit increment of the degree is, the less the creditor rights’ influence could increase. Besides, speaking of the aspect of legal institution, the counties having lower standard in private credit degree follow Nordic legal origin, which helps to promote the private credit. As for the countries of private credit degree in medium-high, they take socialism as their legal source, which would reduce the desire for private credit. Moreover, the establishment of credit organizations can approximately promote the private credit in most of the countries except the counties having lower standard in private credit degree. And the organizations of this kind are classified as private bureau and public registry. The former can extend credit to the enterprise in most of the countries except the counties having lower standard in private credit degree, and the latter is helpful only to the countries having average or higher standard in private credit degree.

Abstract:
Understanding consumer expectations is a key to deliver superior services. The role of expectations has received attention in both satisfaction and perceived quality literature domains but no agreement has been reached concerning the nature and formation of expectations. The present study reviewed the antecedents of consumer expectations discussed in the literature and incorporated some of them into a model. Then it looked at the impact of individualism/collectivism on the formation of expectations. Regressions were conducted to see which antecedents influenced expectations. Two different types of expectations were found and results revealed that many antecedents related to external and internal sources of information, values, number of perceived alternatives and other personal characteristics influence one or the two types of expectations. Interesting theoretical and managerial implications were found concerning the proposed model. The study also revealed that differences exist between individualists and collectivists with regard to the formation of expectations; however, the differences were not as expected.

FIRST This paper investigates the affecting factors of underpricing in China’s A-share initial public offering (IPO) during the period of 1993-2006. Total sample is 1249 A-share stocks. Compare to prior literatures, this paper has several features as follows. First, given the phenomenon of extremely right-skewed of sample data, and the relationship between dependent and independent variables has occurred structural change, this paper tries to apply Quantile Regression (QR) method for avoiding the bias of estimate. In our paper, we find that there are various differences between ordinary least squares (OLS) and QR method. This means the results estimated by OLS may have some bias. Second, this paper tries to employ the market adjusted initial return as dependent variables and find that for the higher initial return of A-share stocks, when the market index increase, the raw initial returns will increase and the increasing range is higher than the market index. Third, we also regard “Macro Regulation and Control ”, “Reformation of Offering Price Model”, “Offshore B-share at same time” as the important factors in A-share initial public offering (IPO). Second This paper investigates the affecting factors of long-run performance in initial public offering (IPO) during the period of 1990-2005. Total sample is 4756 IPOs stocks. Second, we also regard “Did the firms issue offshore shares ”, “Did the IPO take place during the period of bubble”, “Did the IPO take place during the period of 911” as the important factors in long-run performance of IPO. And we find that “Did the firms issue offshore shares” (Offshore) is insignificantly positive related to 3-years return; long-run performance of IPO is decreasing during the period of bubble; Finally, 3-years return is gradually increasing during the period of 911, but the reason is described in our paper.
