Abstract:
A scalable Graphics User Interface Architecture for open Computer Numerical Control (GUIAC) application is presented in this paper. The GUIAC is based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) design pattern. The WPF and MVVM pattern are used to decouple the User Interface (UI) presentation and business logic. This method makes the CNC application UI presentation design and the CNC application logic implementation work in parallel for improving the development and maintenance efficiency. Using the extensible application markup language can reduce the UI presentation design workload. The GUIAC has a loosely coupled structure with three layers. The experiment results of developing the CNC application using GUIAC show that the application graphics user interface is scalable and maintained easily.

Abstract:
This project is a software application that runs with the station controller. When an error appears at the station controller it triggers a response flow checklist (RFC). An RFC is a troubleshooting procedure that helps you fix problems in manufacturing. A RFC is a series of instructions you define to help a manufacturing technician troubleshoot an equipment-related problem while processing. Trigger is a combination of micro-conditions. When a trigger occurs XTREAMS system automatically, it retrieves the RFC associated with that trigger. Authoring is the process of creating RFCs using the XTREAMS authoring tool. One can use the XTREAMS authoring tool to create RFC flow diagrams that the XTREAMS execution tool will display as step-by-step instructions for the RFC user. During running of a tool if the equipment is not ok, there could be multiple reasons or causes (C1, C2). These causes could be isolated by running a pre-defined checklist, that is, RFC. After the RFC and the triggers than are associated are approved using the XTREAMS Authoring Application the contents are send over to the various Intel Sites which are XTREAMS enabled. The toolkit that is provided with XTREAMS product provides one a unique capability to translate the received RFC contents to geo-specific languages so that the RFCs are relevant for the users of that particular geo. The aim here is the XTREAMS toolkit UI development on Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation Technology so as to make it even more efficient and reliable, also which will set it free for unit tests to be performed appropriately. The MVVM framework has been followed for the purpose of development.

Abstract:
This paper aims to develop recycled fiber reinforced cement plaster mortar with a good workability of fresh mixture, and insulation, mechanical and adhesive properties of the final hardened product for indoor application. The effect of the incorporation of different portions of three types of cellulose fibers from waste paper recycling into cement mortar (cement/sand ratio of 1:3) on its properties of workability, as well as other physical and mechanical parameters, was studied. The waste paper fiber (WPF) samples were characterized by their different cellulose contents, degree of polymerization, and residues from paper-making. The cement to waste paper fiber mass ratios (C/WPF) ranged from 500:1 to 3:1, and significantly influenced the consistency, bulk density, thermal conductivity, water absorption behavior, and compressive and flexural strength of the fiber-cement mortars. The workability tests of the fiber-cement mortars containing less than 2% WPF achieved optimal properties corresponding to plastic mortars (140–200 mm). The development of dry bulk density and thermal conductivity values of 28-day hardened fiber-cement mortars was favorable with a declining C/WPF ratio, while increasing the fiber content in cement mortars led to a worsening of the water absorption behavior and a lower mechanical performance of the mortars. These key findings were related to a higher porosity and weaker adhesion of fibers and cement particles at the matrix-fiber interface. The adhesion ability of fiber-cement plastering mortar based on WPF samples with the highest cellulose content as a fine filler and two types of mixed hydraulic binder (cement with finely ground granulated blast furnace slag and natural limestone) on commonly used substrates, such as brick and aerated concrete blocks, was also investigated. The adhesive strength testing of these hardened fiber-cement plaster mortars on both substrates revealed lime-cement mortar to be more suitable for fine plaster. The different behavior of fiber-cement containing finely ground slag manifested in a greater depth of the plaster layer failure, crack formation, and in greater damage to the cohesion between the substrate and mortar for the observed time.

Abstract:
AbstractThe modification of pristine nanoclay and its application in wood plastic composite (WPC) have been investigated in this paper. Pristine nanoclay was modified using transition metal ion (TMI) which was copper (II) chloride to achieve good dispersion and to improve properties of WPC. The morphology, composition, structure, and thermal stability of TMI-modified nanoclay were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis. The pristine (WPC/MMT) and TMI-modified (WPC/MMT Cu) nanoclay based WPC were made from polypropylene (PP), wood flour (WF), and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) coupling agent. Pristine and modified nanoclay with different concentration (1 wt%, 2.5 wt%, 4 wt% and 5 wt%) were used as a reinforcing filler for WPC. Mechanical, physical, morphological, and thermal properties of the prepared composites were evaluated. Result exhibit that at 1 wt% nanoclay content, the tensile, flexural, and impact strength of WPC/MMT improved by approximately 6%, 4%, and 8%, respectively, compared to WPC without nanoclay. For the WPC/MMT Cu, the improvements in these properties were about 2.6, 2.1 and 3 times higher than the WPC/MMT. The physical and thermal properties also improved by incorporating modified nanoclay in WPC.

Abstract:
The writing process approach (WPA) is a way to solve the problems of how the students express their ideas in producing essays systematically. The use of WPA needs to be examined from the students' perceptions because students' perception of the use of WPA influences students' writing ability. This study aims to investigate the students' perceptions on the application of WPA in EFL writing classes. This study applied a qualitative approach using a questionnaire and semi-structured interview with a written list of questions as a guide which focused on students' perceptions in the application of the WPA in their writing class. The data of the interview was analyzed by qualitative by using content analysis. The questionnaire results showed that most students had a highly positive and positive perception, while no students had a negative perception of the application of WPA based on the percentages. The results of interviews were concluded in four themes. Firstly, most students reported that they have highly positive opinions on WPA and considered the planning. Secondly, peer feedback is revising strategies as most useful. Thirdly, they stated that the steps in WPA were specific, systematic, and helpful. Lastly, they perceived that their writing product had improved after the application of WPA in writing class. The findings from the interviews corresponded with the findings from the questionnaire, which revealed that students had positive perceptions on the application of WPA in writing class; therefore, WPA can be suggested as the alternative approach to improve students' writing ability.

Abstract:
Web Application Firewall (WAF) is used to protect the Web application (web app). One of the advantages of having WAF is, it can detect possible attacks even if there is no validation implemented on the web app. But how can WAF protect the web app if WAF itself is vulnerable? In general, four testing methods are used to test WAF such as fuzzing, payload execution, bypassing, and footprinting. There are several open-source WAF testing tools but it appears that it only offers one or two testing methods. That means a tester is required to have multiple tools and learn how each tool works to be able to test WAF using all testing methods. This project aims to solve this difficulty by developing a WAF testing tool called ProjectX that offers all testing methods. ProjectX has been tested on a testing environment and the results show that it fulfilled its requirements. Moreover, ProjectX is available on Github for any developer who want to improve or add more functionality to it.

Abstract:

The mission was to create a prototype of a menu system for the company

System Andersson AB. The instructions were that it has to be as interesting and

modern now as in 20 years. We had to look at technology from the cutting edge

of development to make our prototype survive in the future. Windows

Presentation Foundation (WPF) was the technique we focused on. There are

only a few applications that take advantage of WPF today, but it is predicted

that WPF will be the next generation method for developing applications to the

Windows platform.

To make our menu visually appealing, easy to use and at the same time

functional, we followed the clear path and guidelines that are available in

interaction design. Those guidelines tell us how the design process should be

executed. Through usage of the six basic ideas of interaction design and taken

the principles of richer user experience further, we were able to build a menu

system that will be as modern in 20 years as it is now. We took the thoughts of

physical design into account to make the menu understandable and easy to use.

framgår i fysisk design.

Selvarajah, Senthooran. "The development and application of an antibody microarray as a diagnostic platform for COPD." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13572/.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) Management Guidelines (2001), the definition of COPD is “a disease state characterised by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. The airflow is usually progressive and associated with inflammatory responses of the lungs to noxious particles and gases.” It is becoming an increasing prevalent problem worldwide, with the incidences of morbidity and mortality continually increasing and promoting a lower quality of life in individuals that continue to suffer from it. To date, there is still an incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease resulting in poor diagnosis and treatment plans for COPD that are insufficient in preventing a decline in lung function. In recent years, research has focussed on discovering a set of biomarkers that could improve our understanding of pathogenesis of disease. The ability to measure a vast array of biomarkers simultaneously is highly desirable however the cost associated is somewhat prohibitive. Current methods centre on measuring the presence or absence of multiple biomarkers in patient samples compared to controls. As COPD is a multi-component disease which encompasses diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, it may be necessary to look at biomarker patterns within each disease category. A variety of immune effector cells are known to lead to the pathophysiology of COPD including neutrophils, macrophages and CD8 T-lymphocytes that are all documented to be increased in number and contribute to the inflammatory process. Protein microarrays are used as a measurement tool to determine and quantify the presence or amount of proteins that exist in biological samples (i.e. blood, sputum, [iii] urine etc). The wide use of protein microarray technology has advanced diagnosis and management of multifactorial diseases such as cancer, autoimmunity and allergy. At present, multiple microarray kits are available to researchers at a large cost which make it impractical for most research groups to investigate multiple biomarkers of interest simultaneously. Here we show development, validation and implementation of our bespoke in-house microarray platform enabling quantitative and simultaneous analysis of multiple protein biomarkers at a reasonable cost. The methodology is based on the traditional sandwich ELISA; antibodies are immobilised on poly-L-lysine coated glass and signals amplified and quantified through fluorescence. The accuracy and reproducibility of the in-house microarray was investigated using the guidelines outlined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for pharmacokinetic assay validation. The assay was shown to have high reproducibility with assay accuracy between 80-120% and precision within 20% coefficient of variation, except in very low abundant cytokines such as IL-10, where the CVs were higher due to the variation at the lowest concentrations in sera. Importantly there were no significant differences between ELISA and microarray. This microarray platform was then used to study a selection of healthy controls (n=12), healthy smoking controls (n=36) and COPD patients (n=60) to see if there was a difference in the expression of the 16 biomarkers tested. The overall analysis of the 16 biomarkers investigated in this study, a significant increase in expression of eotaxin-2 was observed in the sera those that have COPD compared to healthy controls and healthy smoking controls. This suggests that eoxtaxin-2 may potentially be responsible for the recruitment and activation of multiple cytokines which in turn lead to the inflammatory cascade observed in COPD COPD severity is divided into four categories according to international guidelines outlined by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). This is often known as stage 1 (mild), stage 2 (moderate), stage 3 (severe) and stage 4 (very severe). This is based on the forced expiratory volume per second (FEV-1%). Interestingly when investigating the different severities of GOLD in COPD, it was observed that at the highest stage of GOLD (stage 4), the expression of 15 of the 16 biomarkers had dropped significantly in comparison to the other stages. This may suggest that at this point of the disease process, the immune system may in fact be suppressed in alliance to hypoxia experienced by an individual. Additionally it has to be acknowledged that the medication that the COPD patients were on were not available prior to analysis. It has to be taken into account that patients at GOLD stages 3 and 4 could be likely to be on a high dose of inhaled corticosteroids, which are immunosuppressive which would lead to drop in the 15 cytokines observed. However without the information available, it cannot be definitive to make such conclusions. Hence this work offers an understanding into the development of a bespoke microarray platform that is capable of investigating protein biomarkers in any disease setting.

Albarakati, Nada. "Targeting ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) and DNA dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs) for synthetic lethality application in breast cancer." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/29408/.

Full text
Abstract:
BRCA1 germ-line mutations predispose to hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. Cells lacking functional BRCA1 protein are deficient in the homologous recombination DNA repair pathway. Base excision repair (BER) is essential for processing base damage induced by endogenous and exogenous sources. Recently, BRCA1 was shown to transcriptionally regulate expression of genes involved in BER. The primary aim of the work described in this thesis was to investigate whether targeting the double-strand break pathway in BRCA1-BER deficient cells using ATM or DNA-PKcs inhibitors would be synthetically lethal. DNA repair gene and protein expression in BRCA1 deficient and proficient cells were investigated. Initially 84 DNA repair genes were investigated. Data demonstrated down-regulation of several DNA repair mRNAs in BRCA1 mutant/knockdown cell lines as compared to proficient cell lines. RT-qPCR was performed for selected DNA repair genes and confirmed statistically significant down-regulation of these genes. Protein expression of the selected group was assessed and showed down-regulation. These results suggest that BRCA1 deficiency may be associated with a global defect in the BER pathway. BRCA1 deficient cells were targeted by ATM/DNA-PKcs inhibitors. BRCA1-BER deficient cells were sensitive to ATM and DNA-PKcs inhibitor treatment either alone or in combination with cisplatin and synthetic lethality was evidenced by DNA double strand breaks accumulation, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. This in vitro study suggests that a potential synthetic lethality relationship exists between BRCA1 deficiency and ATM/DNA-PKcs inhibition. Moreover, results support the hypothesis that cisplatin increases the efficacy of ATM and DNA-PKcs inhibition in BRCA1 deficient cells. Taken together, this study provides the pre-clinical evidence that ATM and DNA-PKcs could be alternative synthetic lethality targets in BRCA1 deficient breast cancer.

Full text
Abstract:
On January 29-30, 2008 a squall line of thunderstorms moved through the Ohio Valley resulting in four deaths and one injury. Such events highlight the importance of accurate forecasting for public safety. Mesoscale Modeling plays an important role in any forecast of a potential squall line. The focus of this study was to examine the performance of several parameterization scheme combinations in the Weather Research and Forecasting Model version three (WRF) as they related to this event. These examinations included cloud microphysics (WRF Single-Moment 3-class, 6-class, and Goddard), cumulus parameterization (Kain-Fritsch and Bets-Miller-Janjic) and planetary boundary layer schemes (Yonsei-University and Mellor-Yamada-Janjic). A total of 12 WRF simulations were conducted for all potential scheme combinations. Data from the WRF simulations for several locations in south central Kentucky were analyzed and compared using Kentucky Mesonet observations for four locations: Bowling Green, Russellville, Murray and Liberty, KY. A fine model resolution of 1 km was used over these locations. Coarser resolutions of 3 km and 9 km were used on the outer two domains, which encompassed the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. The model simulation performance was assessed using established statistical measures for the above four locations and by visually comparing the North American Regional Reanalysis dataset (NARR) along with modeled simulations. The most satisfactory scheme combination was the WRF Single-Moment 3-class Microphysics scheme, Kain-Fritsch cumulus parameterization scheme and Yonsei University scheme for the planetary boundary layer. The planetary boundary layer schemes were noted to have the greatest influence in determining the most satisfactory model simulations. There was limited influence from different selections of microphysics and cumulus parameterization schemes. The preferred physics parameters from these simulations were then used in six additional simulations to analyze the affect different initialization data sets have with regards to model output. Data sets used in these simulations were the Final Operational Analysis global data, North American Regional Reanalysis (3 and 6 hour) and the North American Mesoscale Model at 1, 3 and 6 hour timesteps, for a total of six simulations. More timesteps or an increase in model resolution did not materially improve the model performance.

Abstract:
Abstract The main objective and mission of the ATLAS+ project is to develop advanced structural assessment tools to address the remaining technology gaps for the safe and long term operation of nuclear reactor pressure coolant boundary systems. ATLAS+ WP3 focuses mainly on ductile tearing prediction for large defect in components: Several approaches have been developed to accurately model the ductile tearing process and to take into account phenomena such as the triaxiality effect, or the ability to predict large tearing in industrial components. These advanced models include local approach coupled models or advanced energetic approaches. Unfortunately, the application of these tools is today rather limited to R&D expertise. However, because of the continuous progress in the performance of the calculation tools and accumulated knowledge, in particular by members of ATLAS+, these models can now be considered as relevant for application in the context of engineering assessments. WP3 will therefore: • Illustrate the implementation of these models for industrial applications through the interpretation of large scale mock-ups (with cracks in weld joints for some of them), • Make recommendations for the implementation of the advanced models in engineering assessments, • Correct data from the conventional engineering approach by developing a methodology to produce J-Δa curve suitable case by case, based on local approach models, • Improve the tools, guidance and procedures for undertaking leak-before-break (LBB) assessments of piping components, particularly in relation to representing structural representative fracture toughness J-Resistance curves and the influence of weld residual stresses. To achieve these goals, WP3 is divided into 4 sub-WPs and this paper presents the progress of the work performed in each sub-WP after 24 months of activities.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Sodium Silicate were first used in water-based drilling fluids to stabilize claystone formations in the 1930's, but found favour in the 1990's in high performance, non dispersed water based systems for drilling problematic claystone formations as an alternative to oil-based drilling fluids. In Bongkot South field, Gulf of Thailand, sodium silicate-based drilling fluid (SSBDF) were used with mixed success in shallow gas drilling. Typically, platform WP-33, the claystone formation of the 12¼" section were drilled with 5% v/v Sodium Silicate in the water based drilling fluid together with excessive circulation as intention to improve hole cleaning frequently result in a wellbore that was overgauge by upto 18.9% in some case. This led to further hole cleaning problem that also compromised cement job quality. A further 6 well campaign on WPS-16 required a re-evaulation of the SSBDF coupled to an understanding of the wellbore instability mechanisms that leads to hole enlargement. To overcome better wellbore stability, sodium silicate has been designed by increased concentration to 8% v/v sodium silicate treated drilling fluid showed optimal design for application base on application of SSBDF has been used on platform WP-11 in 2002. Rheology, hydraulic and flow regime was adjusted for laminar flow that reduced the erosion of fragile claystone formation in the wellbore. The revised SSBDF formulation at WPS-16 result in a significant reduction of hole enlargement to 3.2% in the claystone section through a combination of chemicals and mechanical inhibition that contribute improved hole cleaning. The addition of wellbore strengthening material also provide an effective seal to minimize gas invasion. This paper describes the field trials in the Gulf of Thailand drilled with revised sodium sodium silicate based drilling fluid, the use of wellbore strengthening materials to manage gas influxes, better drilling practice and hydraclic simulation concluded that high performance water based drilling fluid of this nature have wider application where oil-base drilling fluid have traditionally been used.

In ASME 2014 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2014-28076.

Full text
Abstract:
The Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is an essential component liable to limit the lifetime of PWR plants. The assessment of defects in RPV subjected to pressurized thermal shock (PTS) transients made at a European level does not necessarily take into account the effect of load history (warm pre-stress WPS) on the resistance of RPV material regarding to the risk of brittle failure. Numerous experimental, analytical and numerical results are available, which confirm the beneficial effect of warm pre-stress on RPV steels with an effective and significant increase of the material resistance regarding to the risk of brittle failure. NESC VII, a new project dealing with WPS, launched in 2008 with the participation of numerous international organizations (involving R&D, Utilities and Manufacturers, Technical supports, Regulatory), is now finished. Based on experimental, analytical and numerical tasks, the project focused on topics generally not covered by past experience on WPS: biaxiality of loading on small and large-scale specimens, effect of irradiation, modeling (including analytical and numerical models) … Among these tasks, new original WPS experiments have been conducted on small and large scale specimens to study the influence of biaxial loading on WPS effect, using a fully representative RPV steel. All WPS experiments have been interpreted with a wide panel of methods, including analytical, engineering and numerical analyses. A description of NESC VII project is presented in this paper including a synthesis of the available experimental, analytical and numerical results.

Abstract:
The Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is an essential component liable to limit the lifetime duration of PWR plants. The assessment of defects in RPV subjected to PTS transients made at a European level do not necessarily take into account the beneficial effect of load history (warm pre-stress WPS) on the resistance of RPV material regarding the risk of brittle failure. A 4-year European Research & Development program — SMILE — was successfully conducted between 2002 and 2005 as part of the 5th Framework of the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM). The objective of the SMILE project (‘Structural Margin Improvements in aged-embrittled RPV with Load history Effects’) was to provide sufficient evidence in order to demonstrate, to model and to validate the beneficial WPS effect in a RPV integrity assessment. Numerous experimental, analytical and numerical results have been obtained which confirm the beneficial effect of warm pre-stress on RPV steels, with an effective significant increase of the material resistance regarding the risk of brittle failure. In addition to SMILE, a new project dealing with WPS — NESC VII — has been launched in 2008 (linking with the European Network of Excellence NULIFE) with the participation of numerous international organizations (R&D, Utilities and Manufacturers). Based on experimental, analytical and numerical tasks, the project is focused on topics generally not covered by past experience on WPS: biaxiality of loading on large-scale specimens, effect of irradiation, applicability to intergranular fracture, modeling (including analytical and numerical models) … Among these tasks, some new novel WPS experiments are being conducted on large scale cruciform bend bar specimens in order to study the influence of biaxial loading on WPS effect, using a fully representative RPV steel (18MND5 steel similar to A533B steel). After a synthesis of main WPS results available from previous projects on representative RPV steels, a description of the NESC VII project is presented in this paper together with the corresponding organization, including the present status of the project.
