Abstract:
This chapter reflects on the similarities and differences between community music and applied ethnomusicology. We argue that to describe a particular study as belonging to one or the other of these sub-disciplines is often as much a reflection of scholarly networks and frameworks as it is evidence of differences in methodology or approach. The chapter introduces a number of case studies from South Africa, and focuses in particular on a community archiving project in the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park. These case studies are used to illustrate the different inflections that may pertain to the terms

Abstract:
This collection of essays is driven by the proposition that environmental and cultural sustainability are inextricably linked. The authors are unified by the influence of the pioneering work of Jeff Todd Titon in developing broadly ecological approaches to folklore, ethnomusicology, and sustainability. These approaches lead to advocacy and activism. Building on and responding to Titon's work, the authors call for profoundly integrated efforts to better understand sustainability as a challenge that encompasses all living beings and ecological systems, including human cultural systems. This book is a social history, theorizing participatory dance in New World public spaces as a tool that has enabled subaltern communities’ political resistance to hegemonic control. Drawing upon musicology, ethnomusicology, iconography, anthropology, dance studies, and folklore, and spanning examples from the eighteenth through the twenty-first century, it identifies recurrent strategic patterns in the music, movement, and “noise” that political minorities--including persons of color, economic underclasses, women, gays, and other resistance movements--have employed to oppose, contest, and tran

Abstract This book explains the music, demographics, cultural issues, and industry surrounding Brazilian jazz composed and performed in New York City by professional musicians between 2000 and 2020. An ethnomusicological study based on original fieldwork and fifty-plus interviews, the book describes how musicians combine nationally associated genres and navigate the music industry while they expand their self-identities transnationally. Chapter 1 compares an original dataset of 173 musicians, their instruments, and social categories (nationality, race, and gender) to published data about Brazi
