Abstract:
Pain is an inevitable human experience. Despite its crucial role for survival, pain becomes problematic when it is enduring and when it impairs the individual’s quality of life. Living with pain on a day-to-day basis can be exhausting, especially when nothing seems to relieve the pain. The way chronic pain sufferers perceive their situation will determine the kind of coping strategies used. The main research thesis within this portfolio aimed to explore differences in pain coping mechanisms amongst the Maltese population. The emergent theory resulted from a grounded theory methodology and was entitled The Journey to Coping. Results reveal that Maltese chronic pain sufferers often rely on a number of self-taught/sought techniques to cope with pain. The journey to coping is not an easy one, with some participants engaging in relentless struggles to eliminate pain. The inability to achieve control often leads to a sense of disconnectedness from the external world, with death perceived as the only solution. On the other hand, accepting pain was linked to increased adaptation and psychological well-being. The main research also aimed to investigate service users’ attitudes towards psychological treatments, with particular reference to online interventions for pain management. Overall, results reveal that escalating pain; the inability to find pain relief; positive expectancies, and a number of facilitating factors play a role in the formation of positive attitudes and increase the likelihood of service uptake. On the other hand, a number of impeding factors and negative expectancies revolving around perceptions of weakness and equating pain with the physical body not only resulted in a number of negative attitudes but hindered help-seeking behaviour. Moreover, although chronic pain sufferers are quite accepting of online interventions, the presence of the human element seems to be an indispensable asset to service uptake as reflected in the theory entitled Wanting the Real Thing.

Abstract:
The UK has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Western Europe and young people are disproportionately affected by high rates of sexually transmitted infections. An experimental evaluation of a sexual health promotion DVD entitled, “Bedroom Business,” was undertaken to assess its capacity to change the cognitive antecedents of condom use. Bedroom Business is a 27 minute documentary featuring young people and health professionals discussing sexual health. The DVD also tells the story of five local young people who write and produce a song which focuses on the risks of unsafe sex and underlines the importance of using condoms. Schools were randomised to either no intervention (control) or presentation of the DVD followed by group discussion (intervention). Participants were 147 students aged 16-18. The DVD was evaluated in terms of its capacity to change 13 cognitive antecedents of condom use through a self-report questionnaire. Participants completed the questionnaire at baseline and at four week follow-up. Analysis of covariance, with baseline scores as covariates, showed there were no differences between the conditions on any of the variables. The DVD itself was very popular, with nearly all the students responding that they would recommend it to other young people. Qualitative feedback revealed many young people found it appealing because it featured other young people. The implications of the study are discussed in the wider context of research into sexual health interventions. It is suggested interventions that are greater in scope and duration, holistic in nature and which aim to change future life opportunities for young people may serve to be the most effective.

Abstract:
In the period of reconstruction following the collapse of legislated Apartheid in South Africa (culminating in the first elections in 1994), pressure has been exerted on professions to restructure and reform themselves to provide services that are more appropriate for a South African context. Organised psychology in South Africa has responded in a number of ways: through a reorganisation of the professional bodies that govern the profession of psychology; through a consideration of what a 'relevant' psychology might be; and through a restructuring of the training programmes in psychology offered in South African universities.

Martindale, Amanda Beverley. "Developing professional judgment and decision making expertise in applied sport psychology." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8053.

Full text
Abstract:
Establishing and enhancing standards of practice is important in any profession, and particularly so in a new and emerging domain such as sport psychology. Accordingly, this thesis draws on literature from teaching, medicine, and parallel disciplines such as clinical and counselling psychology to propose a Professional Judgment and Decision Making (PJDM) approach to the evaluation, reflective practice, and training of applied sport psychologists. Methods and mechanisms already utilised in these more established professions are considered alongside empirical data, generated from long-term programmes of sport psychology consultancy, as potential means to further enhance the performance of professionals in this developing field. As such, the thesis highlights gaps in current process, proposes an original conceptualisation of practice, and illustrates the possible outcomes and implications of this PJDM approach. In addition, the emergent PJDM principles are illustrated in practice through a reflection-in-action case study, and trained and evaluated in novice applied sport psychology practitioners as a basis for the effective development of PJDM expertise.

Rennie, C. "The construction of sex and sexuality within clinical psychology training and practice." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2018. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/17856/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Literature to date claims that sex and sexuality are a core aspect of individuals’ psychological wellbeing. Literature also claims that Clinical Psychologists are not engaging in talking about these issues in their practice or training. Sex and sexuality are complex topics and argued to be impacted by social, cultural, historical and political discourses. Looking at the discourses within the profession may provide helpful insight in understanding current practice. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how sex and sexuality was constructed by clinical psychologist and trainees when discussing training and practice. Method: Semi-structured interviews were completed with 6 practicing CP’s and 4 trainees CP’s, 2 focus groups were also completed with trainees from 2 different universities. A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA) approach was used to explore professional and trainee’s discourses around the topics of sex and sexuality. Results: Six discourses were identified during the analysis consisting of ‘Let’s not talk about sex’; ‘Dangerous for Clients, Professionals and Society’; ‘Social and Political Movements’ and ‘Culture and Contextual Discourses.’ Two counter discourses also emerged: ‘Let’s talk about sex’ and ‘Sex and Sexuality are Positive and Healthy’. Conclusions: Various wider discourses can be seen to be impacting on clinical psychologist’s decision making when talking about sex and sexuality within practice and training. Constructions of what is expected from clinical psychologists in the therapy room appear to be reinforced by dominant social, political and cultural discourses. Counter discourses were present; bringing these alternatives more into the forefront could be beneficial for clients.

Kwiatkowski, Richard. "The contribution of ethical concepts to the development of professional applied psychology." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2009. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/6975.

Full text
Abstract:
In this PhD by publication, the author’s work concerning what it is to be a psychologist operating - sometimes simultaneously - within different ethical domains will be examined using conference papers, journal publications and book chapters. This material, which spans a period of 20 years, demonstrates a fundamental concern with the normative ethical question of “what we ought to do” as psychologists in complex situations; it will be argued that this work has contributed to the academic debate and influenced policy and thus practice. In order to position the body of work, and to introduce Codes of Ethics (which seek to operationalise ethics within prescribed domains), the thesis begins by introducing normative ethics. It is argued that psychology’s stance is essentially deontological, whilst organisations are utilitarian in orientation. This implicit tension is addressed in the author’s contributions, which are examined within their (historic) academic context using a comparison of the British Psychological Society’s 1985 and the significantly revised 2006 Code of Ethics. These codes, rather than the more usual positioning within one specific literature, are used to provide a coherent narrative concerning the development of the author’s thinking in this domain, though, necessarily, different overlapping academic literatures are accessed depending on context. The cumulative academic contribution of the published work has been to advance ethical ideas in some areas of professional applied psychology. For example, in the 1985 code, the complexity of operating within organisational contexts was barely acknowledged; this has now significantly changed. The body of work examined here has emphasised how psychologists must consciously and deliberately coexist and act The contribution of ethical concepts to the development of professional applied psychology within overlapping, and sometimes competing, professional and organisational ethical contexts, domains and philosophical positions. In this synoptic piece, after the presentation, positioning, and examination of the contribution of extant published material, possible future directions for research and practice are indicated. For instance, preliminary material will be presented suggesting that, in occupational psychology, where complex differing ethical perspectives are present, public ethical debate appears to be relatively neglected; some hypothesis are presented. More theoretically, areas for development include the extension of recent philosophical ethical ideas to these particular domains of applied psychology, including thinking that suggests that ethical considerations precede other kinds of social obligation. Finally, and linking the academic more firmly to practice and policy, a brief theoretical examination of the possible impact of statutory registration on different branches of psychology is briefly attempted, and potential practical and philosophical ethical consequences for UK psychologists and psychology are briefly outlined.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the field of nursing and transformational leadership. The introduction provides a foundation for defining leadership and a history of leadership theories. Chapter one discusses the transformational leadership model and its four components as well as the effects that transformational leadership can have on organizations, such as satisfaction, performance, and stress. In addition, this section compares transactional leadership to transformational leadership. Chapter two provides a history of nursing and current problems in the nursing field, which can be addressed by applying transformational leadership to nursing. This section provides insight into the leadership aspect of nursing and examines the effects that transformational leadership can have on nurses, patients, and the overall medical field. Lastly, chapter three is a case study on the Western University of Health Sciences leadership program for nurses, specifically focusing on the transformational leadership portion. This section will provide background information about the program, such as the program’s goal and curriculum, and indicate the effects that the seminar has had on nursing leadership. Ultimately, this paper will show the importance of teaching and applying transformational leadership to the nursing field in order to improve the satisfaction, wellbeing, and the performance of nurses and patients.

Long, Ryan M. "Response interruption and redirection applied to life skills tasks." Thesis, University of Southern Maine, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3739809.

Full text
Abstract:

Response Interruption and Redirection (RIRD) has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for stereotypic behavior exhibited by persons with autism spectrum disorder. The present study investigates the applicability of this intervention in the context of the classroom setting. Specifically, it investigates whether or not the intervention is as effective when it is used with a subject in the process of completing complex tasks. This research also investigates collateral effects of reduced stereotypic behavior on productivity and efficiency of task completion. While stereotypy was reduced and productivity increased across three experimental conditions, there were mixed results as to the relationship between RIRD and overall efficiency of task completion.

Abstract:
The main projective methods are conceived to be applied in a classic-paper style and the virtual-e-learning style represents the only possible learning experience for the students. The paper describes the experience of conceiving and using computer software in order to introduce the bases of projective psychology. The software (Matei Georgescu, Projective technique – interactive software, produced by Titu Maiorescu University, Bucharest, Romanian Office for Author Right: 0113 / 06. 02. 2001) was used in the benefit of the third year psychology students of a private university and support the direct experience with the virtual-stimulus-material of the main projective techniques such as Rotter, Düss, T.A.T., Rosenzweig, Rorschach, Szondi, Lüscher, Koch. Projective Psychology Lab was developed by se use of the computer and the Projective technique software over a semester of study, for three years under my assistence. The program contains the following items: the limits of the projection concept, the analytic relation and the projective relation, verbal associative experiment, completing sentences test and fables method, Thematic Apperception Test, the frustration test, the inkblot test, the drive analysis test, the color test, the tree test, draw a person test. Each method presentation contains information about the technique, the stimulus-material and the manner of interpretation. The access to stimulus-material of the Thematic Apperception Test, the frustration test, the inkblot test and the drive test analysis is possible in the order of test protocol. The software allows the color calibration of Lüscher test and also quotation examples. The Rorschach stimulus-material can be rotated within 360 degrees limit. The quotations index of the tree test is accessible in the order of the main interpretative zones. Despite the fact that the projective techniques were not conceived to be applied in the virtual-computerized style, during the three years pedagogical experiences with the Projective technique – interactive software, we have noticed the succes of such an introductory electronic way of learning.

Hornung, Severin, Matthias Weigl, Britta Herbig, and Jürgen Glaser. "WORK AND HEALTH IN TRANSITION: TRENDS OF SUBJECTIFICATION IN APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY." In International Psychological Applications Conference and Trends. inScience Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2021inpact056.

Full text
Abstract:
"Reported is the synthesis of a series of seven studies on work and health, conducted collaboratively by researchers in applied psychology and occupational medicine. This qualitative meta-study develops a framework, in which reviewed studies are structured, aggregated, integrated, and interpreted in a theory-guided iterative process of themed analysis. Building on empirical results, the subsequent interpretive integration seeks to demonstrate, how overarching, pervasive, and in psychological research typically underemphasized tendencies of “subjectification” manifest in exemplary work contexts, research topics, and results. Subjectification of work is operationalized in dimensions of work intensification (performance focus), work internalization (goal adoption), and work individualization (job personalization). A meta-dimension is work insecurity (personal risk), cultivated in contemporary management ideologies of employee self-reliance. Following thematic description, content-analytical structuring criteria include: a) focus on work task (activity) versus working conditions (context); b) primary (close, direct, explicit) versus secondary (inferred, indirect, subtle) references to and/or indication for identified tendencies of subjectification; and c) theoretically assumed and empirically examined relationships with negative (psychopathological) and positive (psychosalutogenic) short, medium, and longer-term attitudinal and health-related work effects, as well as the personality-shaping impact of long-term occupational socialization. Psychological aspects of work tasks are core to 4 studies, 3 focus on working conditions and organizational practices. References to intensification were dominant in 4 studies, whereas 5 include internalization processes, and 3 predominantly focus on individualization of work. All studies share secondary or indirect references to other subjectifying tendencies. Examined work effects were aggregated into a matrix of short, medium and long-term positive and negative manifestations of health and wellbeing. Results suggest tensions and pressures arising from the motivational individualization of work tasks and conditions, resulting internalization of organizational interests and goals (e.g., performance, efficiency, costs), coupled with system-inherent tendencies of work intensification. These dysfunctional dynamics constitute risks factors for psychologically detrimental or harmful forms of self-management, self-control, and self-endangering work behavior, as manifestations of “internalized” incompatibilities between work and health in the neoliberal workplace, aggravated by existential threats associated with political-economic crisis. Outlined are implications of subjectification for a critical reevaluation and reorientation of basic theoretical assumptions of research and practice in applied psychology and occupational health."

Abstract:
The paper describes current state of education and professional development of specialists in human factors and ergonomics in Russia. University education in Russia is regulated by the fixed list of specialities and by the State learning standards. Currently, there are four university specialities that can serve as “umbrella” for education of ergonomists, namely: “System Analysis and Control”, “Biotechnical Systems and Technologies”, “Psychology”, “Design”. Two Russian leading universities offer bachelor and master programs on ergonomics. Postgraduate ergonomics education is available in the form of training courses and courses for preparation of candidate or doctoral dissertation. Any dissertation must be attributed to one of the predetermined scientific specialities. The most relevant speciality is “Occupational psychology, engineering psychology, ergonomics”. Nearly half of all candidates and doctors of sciences who have defended research work on ergonomics have degree in technology, one third – in psychology. Currently, Russian ergonomics society is elaborating procedure for certification of professional ergonomists following the CREE (Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists) model. As a first step to this target, the Standard for certification of the specialists designing human-machine systems has been developed. This standard establishes three evaluation criteria concerning of applicant’s educational level, professional experience, and professional development and self-education.

Corscadden, Louise, and Arpaporn Sutipatanasomboon. What Is Operant Behavior And How To Study It. Maze Engineers, December 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55157/me2022127.

Full text
Abstract:
Operant behavior describes a type of voluntary goal-directed actions in animals based on the repercussions of previous occurrences. It develops when animals learn to specifically respond to recurring situations based on the outcome of their past experience. American psychologist B.F. Skinner was the first to use operant to describe the behaviors he observed in his landmark experiments in laboratory animals. Operant behavior and conditioning refine the nuance between conscious and unconscious behavioral responses, which influence psychology, and applied behavior analysis, and improve our understanding of addiction, substance dependence, child development, and decision-making.

Aguiar Borges, Luciane, Lisa Rohrer, and Kjell Nilsson. Green and healthy Nordic cities: How to plan, design, and manage health-promoting urban green space. Nordregio, January 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.6027/r2024:11403-2503.

Full text
Abstract:
This handbook is the culmination of the NORDGREEN project, which develops and implements smart planning and management solutions for well-designed, high-quality green spaces that promote health and well-being. Researchers and practitioners worked alongside one another in six Nordic cities: Aarhus (Denmark), Espoo and Ii (Finland), Stavanger (Norway), and Täby and Vilhelmina (Sweden). Together, the researchers and practitioners applied methods including GIS data analysis, statistical analysis, PPGIS surveys and analysis, policy document analysis, interviews, and evidence-based design models. The handbook uses an innovative framework based on the multi-disciplinary approach of the project, using epidemiological studies, environmental psychology, policy and management, and citizen participation. These fields of study and their respective methodologies are divided into the four so-called NORD components—NUMBERING, OBSERVING, REGULATING, and DESIGNING—which, accompanied by a BACKGROUND section reviewing the evidence linking green space and human health, form the bulk of the handbook. Some key take-away messages from these chapters include: There is a fairly broad consensus that access to, and use of, natural and green areas have a positive influence on people’s health and well-being. Both perceived and objective indicators for access to green space and for health are needed for making a more comprehensive evaluation for how people’s health is influenced by green space. Citizens’ experiential, local knowledge is a vital component of urban planning, and PPGIS can offer practitioners the opportunity to gather map-based experiential knowledge to provide insights for planning, designing, and managing green spaces. Alignment, both vertically across the political, tactical, and operational levels, as well as horizontally across departments, is critical for municipal organisations to foster health-promoting green spaces. Evidence-based design models can provide important categories and qualities for diagnosing the gaps in existing green spaces and designing green spaces with different scales and scopes that respond to the various health and well-being needs of different people. Based on the research and lessons learned from the six case study cities, the handbook provides practitioners with a TOOLBOX of adaptable methods, models, and guidelines for delivering health-promoting green spaces to consider in their own contexts. By reading this handbook, planners and policymakers can expect to gain (1) a background on the evidence linking green spaces and health, practical tools for planning, designing, and managing green spaces, (2) tips from researchers regarding the challenges of using various methods, models, and guidelines for delivering health-promoting green space, and (3) inspiration on some success stories emerging from the Nordic Region in this area of study. The handbook covers a wide range of health and urban green space topics. Landscape architects will find evidence-based design models for enhancing existing green space design processes. Planners will find methods and guidelines for identifying, collecting, and analysing both qualitative and quantitative green space and health data from statistical databases, national citizen surveys, and map-based participatory surveys. And all practitioners will find guidelines for achieving programmatic alignment in their work for delivering health-promoting green space.
