Adenowo, Adetokunbo. "Augmented conversation and cognitive apprenticeship metamodel based intelligent learning activity builder system." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/8238.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focused on a formal (theory based) approach to designing Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) authoring tool involving two specific conventional pedagogical theories—Conversation Theory (CT) and Cognitive Apprenticeship (CA). The research conceptualised an Augmented Conversation and Cognitive Apprenticeship Metamodel (ACCAM) based on apriori theoretical knowledge and assumptions of its underlying theories. ACCAM was implemented in an Intelligent Learning Activity Builder System (ILABS)—an ITS authoring tool. ACCAM’s implementation aims to facilitate formally designed tutoring systems, hence, ILABS―the practical implementation of ACCAM― constructs metamodels for Intelligent Learning Activity Tools (ILATs) in a numerical problem-solving context (focusing on the construction of procedural knowledge in applied numerical disciplines). Also, an Intelligent Learning Activity Management System (ILAMS), although not the focus of this research, was developed as a launchpad for ILATs constructed and to administer learning activities. Hence, ACCAM and ILABS constitute the conceptual and practical contributions that respectively flow from this research. ACCAM’s implementation was tested through the evaluation of ILABS and ILATs within an applied numerical domain―the accounting domain. The evaluation focused on the key constructs of ACCAM―cognitive visibility and conversation, implemented through a tutoring strategy employing Process Monitoring (PM). PM augments conversation within a cognitive apprenticeship framework; it aims to improve the visibility of the cognitive process of a learner and infers intelligence in tutoring systems. PM was implemented via an interface that attempts to bring learner’s thought process to the surface. This approach contrasted with previous studies that adopted standard Artificial Intelligence (AI) based inference techniques. The interface-based PM extends the existing CT and CA work. The strategy (i.e. interface-based PM) makes available a new tutoring approach that aimed fine-grain (or step-wise) feedbacks, unlike the goal-oriented feedbacks of model-tracing. The impact of PM—as a preventive strategy (or intervention) and to aid diagnosis of learners’ cognitive process—was investigated in relation to other constructs from the literature (such as detection of misconception, feedback generation and perceived learning effectiveness). Thus, the conceptualisation and implementation of PM via an interface also contributes to knowledge and practice. The evaluation of the ACCAM-based design approach and investigation of the above mentioned constructs were undertaken through users’ reaction/perception to ILABS and ILAT. This involved, principally, quantitative approach. However, a qualitative approach was also utilised to gain deeper insight. Findings from the evaluation supports the formal (theory based) design approach—the design of ILABS through interaction with ACCAM. Empirical data revealed the presence of conversation and cognitive visibility constructs in ILATs, which were determined through its behaviour during the learning process. This research identified some other theoretical elements (e.g. motivation, reflection, remediation, evaluation, etc.) that possibly play out in a learning process. This clarifies key conceptual variables that should be considered when constructing tutoring systems for applied numerical disciplines (e.g. accounting, engineering). Also, the research revealed that PM enhances the detection of a learner’s misconception and feedback generation. Nevertheless, qualitative data revealed that frequent feedbacks due to the implementation of PM could be obstructive to thought process at advance stage of learning. Thus, PM implementations should also include delayed diagnosis, especially for advance learners who prefer to have it on request. Despite that, current implementation allows users to turn PM off, thereby using alternative learning route. Overall, the research revealed that the implementation of interface-based PM (i.e. conversation and cognitive visibility) improved the visibility of learner’s cognitive process, and this in turn enhanced learning—as perceived.

May, Roger N. "An exposition of the apprentice assessment systems in Western Australia." Thesis, Curtin University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1244.

Full text
Abstract:
This study assessed the dilemmas associated with apprentice assessment systems in the New Apprenticeship Training and Assessment System (NATAS), (State based system), and the Modular system (National system) in Western Australia. Although both were described as competency-based systems these different schemes showed the variations that existed under this general description of training and assessment. The Modular system was a competency-based system which emphasised outcomes rather than the process of training. The emphasis on the process of training was what sustained decades of traditional apprenticeship training. The competency-based approach, discussed in detail later, was a performance-based methodology. Conceptually the apprentice either could perform a given task or task element as set by a specific performance criterion, or s/he could not. The person was judged, based upon the performance outcome to be either competent or incompetent. The basic assumption was that the person could not be partially competent. The competencies approach was a cornerstone of the Australian National training provision. It was administered by the National Training Board through an Australian Standards Framework. The key target group in this assessment of the competency area and the focus of this study was the young apprentice who would become a skilled tradesperson in a relatively short period of four years.Supporting the apprentices in the NATAS system were monitors, lecturers, and employer's members of these groups, who together with apprentices were used to gain insights into the new training initiatives.A previous study Williamson, Lowe and Boyd (1990) had looked at the Western Australian New Apprenticeship and Training System (NATAS). The intention was to develop ideas further and in greater depth using qualitative methodology in the area of effectiveness of the training and assessment system. The research also had critically assessed the Modular system (National) which in most cases progressively replaced NATAS during the period of the research.

The Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI) facility at Kansas State University is a huge biocontainment facility to conduct research on infectious diseases that pose a threat to plant, animal and human health. The BRI Training and Education Program is currently offline; i.e., classroom sessions are taken to provide this training and education. The objective behind taking up this project was to move the entire training and education module of Biosecurity Research Institute online, instead of having a classroom session for each training course, with an subject matter expert (SME) to come and take the training session. The aim is to develop an online training system which is synchronized with the information in the BRI Research Project Database. The employees will only have to login to the website, scroll through the list of courses they are enrolled in, take the courses, write the assignments/quizzes assigned to the course and then submit the quizzes. They can also self-enroll themselves into courses, if they are given the permission to do so. The SME’s of the courses can create new courses, upload the course materials, enroll users into the courses, and assign deadlines to course completion. Once the student submits the course quiz or assignments, the SME’s can grade the quiz, assign a final grade to the students, and give feedback on their performance. They can even reassign the course in case of poor performance by the student. The administrators of the website can assign roles to different personnel, give permissions according to need and requirement, add/delete courses, and change the appearance of the website. The project is to be done using a Learning Management System called Moodle. Moodle (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an online learning management system designed to allow interaction between teachers and students. The back-end database used is SQL Server 2008 R2 and additional tools used are Adobe Presenter (with Microsoft Power Point 2010) to create the courses in SCORM format.

Müns, Andrea, Jürgen Meixensberger, and Dirk Lindner. "Evaluation of a novel phantom‑based neurosurgical training system." Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2014. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-157794.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The complexity of neurosurgical interventions demands innovative training solutions and standardized evaluation methods that in recent times have been the object of increased research interest. The objective is to establish an education curriculum on a phantom‑based training system incorporating theoretical and practical components for important aspects of brain tumor surgery. Methods: Training covers surgical planning of the optimal access path based on real patient data, setup of the navigation system including phantom registration and navigated craniotomy with real instruments. Nine residents from different education levels carried out three simulations on different data sets with varying tumor locations. Trainings were evaluated by a specialist using a uniform score system assessing tumor identification, registration accuracy, injured structures, planning and execution accuracy, tumor accessibility and required time. Results: Average scores improved from 16.9 to 20.4 between first and third training. Average time to craniotomy improved from 28.97 to 21.07 min, average time to suture improved from 37.83 to 27.47 min. Significant correlations were found between time to craniotomy and number of training (P < 0.05), between time to suture and number of training (P < 0.05) as well as between score and number of training (P < 0.01). Conclusion: The training system is evaluated to be a suitable training tool for residents to become familiar with the complex procedures of autonomous neurosurgical planning and conducting of craniotomies in tumor surgeries. Becoming more confident is supposed to result in less error‑prone and faster operation procedures and thus is a benefit for both physicians and patients.

Abstract:
Social partnership, as interaction between the state, employees and employers, functions in all the democratic states. Social partnership became one of the important quality assurance factors in VET, which make influence on the change, innovation and renewal processes in the VET system. On the one hand, social partners have been involved into the identification of the curriculum aims, implementation and evaluation processes; on the other hand, they have been also involved into the VET policy-making. For Lithuania, with the dominating school-based VET model, it is characteristic that for a long time the interaction between the activity and education systems was influenced by the supply principle: training of specialists was organised according to the decisions and possibilities of the educational system not taking into consideration demands from the labour market. Social dialogue in Lithuania had to be born in extremely difficult situation. Initiatives of social partners were blocked by the centralised system; there was no culture and tradition of social dialogue, labour relations were affected by the soviet regime. The research problem is defined by still fragmented relations and interaction between the activity and education systems, vocational education and training sub-system, and vocational education and training quality assurance processes, influencing social partnership. The research focuses on the questions of social partnership forms in the school based VET system... [to full text]
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this thesis work is to design and implement a system supporting the fire-fighter’straining evaluation. The solution presented in this report comprises a real-time locating system andInertial Measurement Unit that collect the training data and an application built with the Unity3D gameengine used for processing. Before the presented application can process any data, a training facility must be recreated, and atrainer or an expert must define training guidelines, such as zones that a trainee must visit, objectshe/she has to see, and the required execution time. After this preparation and completed trainingsession, collected data is processed and the visualization together with evaluation process begins. Theprogram visualizes trainee’s position and his/her field of view and evaluates his performance. For thelatter, it uses the Unity3D collision detection feature. After the evaluation, the trainer can see detailedresults with recorded time stamps, and using them, he/she can fast forward to specific, important points, reducing the time to analyze trainee’s performance throughout the whole training. Tests which the authors conducted confirm that the built system meets requirements and is useful forevaluation of the trainee’s performance.

The QUIZIT system has been developed to support adaptive and standard testing, along with automatic grading, record keeping, and test administration using the WWW as a delivery vehicle. We have applied QUIZIT in connection with our NSF-supported Education Infrastructure project on Interactive Learning with a Digital Library in Computer Science to help with evaluation in a master's level course as well as a large freshmen level service course. Preliminary testing in these courses has shown us that QUIZIT is a promising supplement to other forms of evaluation in self-paced education. We also conjecture QUIZIT might be a valuable tool in distance learning environment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation of a Literacy Intervention Programme with Grade One isiXhosa speaking learners in one primary school in the Western Cape. The study was motivated by the persisting low literacy levels in the Foundation Phase which have been reported in the Annual National Assessment (ANA) reports since 2011. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Provincial Departments of Education have designed many intervention programmes to assist teachers in teaching literacy to young learners. These programmes include teacher development workshops and the supply of literacy materials in schools. Schools also have their own intervention programmes to support learners who struggle with reading and writing. Despite these efforts, there is no significant improvement in learners' literacy levels. Therefore, this study investigated how the literacy intervention programme for Grade one was implemented in one township school in Cape Town.

Tomizawa, Hajime. "AUTOMATED SCENARIO GENERATION SYSTEM IN A SIMULATION." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2006. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2637.

Abstract:
Developing training scenarios that induce a trainee to utilize specific skills is one of the facets of simulation-based training that requires significant effort. Simulation-based training systems have become more complex in recent years. Because of this added complexity, the amount of effort required to generate and maintain training scenarios has increased. This thesis describes an investigation into automating the scenario generation process. The Automated Scenario Generation System (ASGS) generates expected action flow as contexts in chronological order from several events and tasks with estimated time for the entire training mission. When the training objectives and conditions are defined, the ASGS will automatically generate a scenario, with some randomization to ensure no two equivalent scenarios are identical. This makes it possible to train different groups of trainees sequentially who may have the same level or training objectives without using a single scenario repeatedly. The thesis describes the prototype ASGS and the evaluation results are described and discussed. SVSTM Desktop is used as the development infrastructure for ASGS as prototype training system.

Abstract:
A prototype microcomputer-based CBI program was developed to provide review, structured self-study, and remediation to students undergoing initial skills training at the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC), Lakehurst, NJ. The program demonstrates the capabilities of the authoring (LSAUT) and delivery (LSSTU) programs that are parts of the Language Skills Computer Aided Instruction (LSCAI) system developed by the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center and the University of Utah. A course of instruction at NATTC, Lakehurst was selected for this project on the basis of level of training, student throughput, attrition and setback rates, and category of learning objectives. Student and instructor evaluations of the program were conducted. A preliminary cost-effectiveness analysis is presented. Conclusions and recommendations include: (1) Development of the prototype program should be continued; (2) The LSCAI system should be considered for this type of application when learning objectives require the remembering of facts, especially the learning of technical vocabulary; (3) Use of microcomputer-based review, structured self-study and remediation can reduce the requirement for experienced instructors; (4) This type of CBI can be cost-effective when implemented on low-cost microcomputers using inexpensive software; (5) demonstration projects such as this should be encouraged and funded to facilitate the movement of technology from the laboratory to the classroom; (6) drill and practice type CBI that uses the capabilities of modern microcomputers can be challenging, interesting, and enjoyable and Navy development of systems that exploit these microcomputer capabilities should be continued; and (7) this type of review program should be considered for use on Navy ships to augment on-the-job training.

Full text
Abstract:
Pre-Trip Inspection of the truck and trailer is one of the components of the current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) test. This part of the CDL test checks the ability of the student to identify the important parts of the commercial vehicle and their potential defects. The Virtual Check Ride System (VCRS), a computer-based application, is an assessment and feedback tool that mirrors the inspection component of the actual CDL. The VCRS has provided an after action review (AAR) via a feedback session that helps in identifying and correcting drivers' skill in inspecting parts and for overall safety. The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of the VCRS in truck driving training programs. An experimental study was conducted with truck driving students at Mid Florida Tech, located in Orlando, Florida. The students were divided into control and experimental groups. Students in the both groups received regular training provided by Mid Florida Tech. The experimental group received additional training by making use of the VCRS. A total of three paper-based tests were given to all subjects during first three weeks; one test at the end of a week. Both groups were given the same paper-based tests. A two-way analysis of variance was conducted to evaluate the effect of the VCRS in the experimental group. This analysis found a significant difference between control and experimental groups. This effect showed that the students in the experimental group increased their performance by using VCRS. Moreover, there was a main effect in the scores of each week. However, there was not an interaction between the two factors. Follow up Post Hoc tests were conducted to evaluate the pair-wise differences among the means of the test week factors using a Tukey HSD test. These Post Hoc comparisons indicated that the mean score for the third week's test scores were significantly better than the first week's test score in the experimental group. It was concluded that the VCRS facilitated learning for the experimental group and that learning also occurred for both groups as a result of repeated testing.

Lattimer, Charles Linton. "Rhetorical and Developmental Analysis of a Computer-Based Corporate Training System: Foucault, Boal, and the Conceptualization of a "Dialogue Training Continuum"." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35817.

Full text
Abstract:

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Club Corporation of America collaborated on a multimedia-training project, Board of Governors: The Cornerstone of a Fine Private Club. This training sought to catalogue all existing support materials and articulate key philosophical and operational systems regarding relationships between Club Managers and the club's Board of Governors, which stands as the leading administrative body for philosophical and operational issues in individual private clubs.

This analysis operates on two levels of investigation: 1) a case study that provides a rhetorical assessment of the development and contents of this training system, 2) based on this appraisal, an introduction of theoretical options regarding the development of training applications. Moreover, the theoretical exhortations of Michel Foucault and Augusto Boal provide a language to encourage a different modus operandi in the field of corporate training.

By articulating the concept of a "dialogue training continuum," this elucidation strives to offer an alternative when rethinking training systems and their encoded discourses. By analyzing local and institutional knowledges and how those knowledges find shape in this project, this analysis argues that establishing a system where end-users may question and reshape the philosophical discourse of the company during the context of training, the overall milieu has the ability to grow and shape-shift through legitimizing and valuing the voices of all organizational constituents.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2001.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 87-89).
The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) took effect on July 1, 2000, replacing the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) and becoming the most recent in a series of public interventions in the area of employment and training in the United States. WIA made many significant changes to the way publicly-financed job training services are funded, targeted, and accessed. It prioritized job placement over training and shifted from targeting low-income populations to universal access to services. Most significantly, WIA replaced contracts to training vendors with a customer-held voucher system administered through "One-Stop Career Centers," which act as the center of all local employment and training activity. These changes caused significant concern for non-profit job training providers who worried about the effect of this new legislation on their organizations, their job training programs, and their clients. From the perspective of non-profit job training providers in Boston, this thesis attempts to explain the initial concerns related to WIA and to analyze whether these predictions are playing out in practice now that the first year of implementation is well underway. This analysis is based on a survey of non-profit job training providers in Greater Boston conducted in August 2000 and in-depth follow-up interviews in March and April 2001 with five of the survey respondents who previously received JTPA funding and now receive WIA funding. Additionally, this research is based on reports, articles, and books written on U.S. employment and training legislation, the Workforce Investment Act, and vouchers in a variety of social service arenas. This thesis demonstrates that non-profit job training providers initially worried about program financing, cash flow, program planning, coordination with career centers, competition, marketing, and exclusion of the most disadvantaged clients. The interviews illustrate that most of these initial concerns have continued to challenge non-profit providers well into the first year of WIA implementation. Certain characteristics, however, have assisted some providers in overcoming these challenges more easily than others. Career center partners, large organizations with a commitment to workforce development, providers with a wide diversity of funding sources, and programs serving a particular niche of the labor force, all appear to have advantages in the new training system.

Abstract:
Background Operant conditioning of one’s slow cortical potential (SCP) or sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) can be used to control epilepsy or to manipulate external devices, as applied in BCI (Brain-Computer Interface). To be practical, a BCI-system should use as less channels as possible. For this purpose, a wireless biofeedback system was developed that allows feedback of a single EEG-channel in discrete trials. The commonly accepted view that both the SCP and SMR are a reflection of central arousal suggests a functional relationship between SCP and SMR networks. Methods A training was performed that aimed to teach 19 participants to control their SCP (n=9) or SMR (n=10) over vertex. Participants received 20 neurofeedback sessions, each comprising of 96 trials in which they had to decrease cortical arousal (SCP positivity/SMR enhancement) and 64 trials in which they had to increase cortical arousal (SCP negativity/SMR suppression). In a trial, participants were required to exceed an individual threshold level of the feedback parameter relative to a 500 ms pre-feedback baseline and hold this level for 2 seconds (SCP) or 0.5 seconds (SMR) in order to obtain reinforcement. Results Overall, 10 of the total of 19 participants achieved control over their EEG. In the SCP-trained group, 4 out of 9 participants were able to increase the differentiation between their SCP responses on positivity- required vs. negativity-required trials over the course of the experiment. Improvements in control over the SMR in suppression-required and enhancement-required trials were acquired by respectively 3 and 4 of the 10 SMR-trained participants. These SMR-trained responders did not show differentiation between their SMR responses in enhancement-required vs. suppression-required trials. Interestingly, the SMR responders did show a differentiation in their SCP response while trained on SMR. Conclusions It can be concluded from this experiment that, with the proposed method, a number of the participants are able to acquire control over their SCP or SMR. For SMR, however, bidirectional control is very difficult to achieve with the present training procedure. Furthermore, SCP positivity and SMR enhancement are easier to learn compared to their counterparts. The observed SCP differentiation while training SMR and absence of equivalent SMR changes while training SCP suggest that SMR training modulates the central arousal system, whereas SCP training invokes local effects.

Abstract:
High quality mental health services do not reach the youth who need them, leading to efforts to implement effective treatments more broadly. One focus of these efforts concerns training the mental health workforce, of which master’s-level social workers represent a large proportion. However, the curricula of master’s in social work (MSW) programs do not often emphasize evidence-based approaches. One possible solution is Managing and Adapting Practice (MAP; PracticeWise, LLC), a system that allows clinicians to (1) identify clinically indicated evidence-based programs by searching a growing evidence-base of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and (2) build individualized evidence-informed treatment plans by focusing on common practice elements. MAP may also address the concerns about manual-based programs (e.g., inflexibility). Although some MSW programs have integrated MAP, the benefits of MAP training within MSW education have not yet been evaluated. This project evaluated multiple mechanisms of training in a semester-long MSW-focused MAP course relative to curriculum-as-usual control at a large public university. Participants were advanced MSW students (mean age = 27, SD = 5.8; 92.3% women; 59% white) either enrolled in the MAP course (n = 17) or enrolled in curriculum-as-usual (n = 22). The MAP course was co-taught by an expert MAP trainer and a MAP-trained social worker. Pre- and post-semester, participants completed a battery that included: (1) role-plays with standardized patients that were videotaped and coded using the Therapy Observational Coding System of Child Psychotherapy – Revised Strategies scale; (2) a written task that was subsequently coded to assess participants’ clinical decision-making skills during different phases of a standardized case; and (3) attitudinal factors that may be predictive of future MAP usage, such as attitudes toward evidence-based practice and the acceptability and feasibility of MAP. Results indicate significant uptake of cognitive and behavioral therapeutic strategies in the MAP condition. Overall, participants endorsed positive attitudes toward evidence-based practice broadly and MAP specifically. Findings may be used to inform the development of more effective evidence-informed curriculum for master’s-level clinical programs and future workforce training initiatives. Methodological considerations may inform advances in instrumentation to measure multidimensional training outcomes

Abstract:
Mindfulness-based practices are associated with increased attentional qualities, improved self-focus styles, enhanced empathic understanding, and strengthened self-compassion, making these practices a viable addition to counselor training programs. However, current mindfulness training models are primarily designed for relief of psychological distress, stress reduction, and increased well-being rather than focused on enhancing therapeutic skills and require intensive time commitments that may present logistical difficulties for overburdened curricula and graduate students. This study piloted an on-line, eight-week mindfulness-based practices learning management system for counselors (MBLMS-C) with a specific focus on the cultivation of qualities associated with successful therapeutic relationships. Ten of forty-six recruited counseling master's students enrolled in their first basic skills course at a sample of accredited universities across the United States completed the exit survey. Data were analyzed using multivariate repeated measures analyses comparing pre- post- counselor relational qualities of mindfulness traits, empathy, self-focus style, and self-compassion. Results indicated no statistically significant difference with a partial ?2 = .73. What-if analyses (N = 30) indicated statistical significance may have been obtained given a larger sample. Variance was explained by increased self-compassion (partial ?2 = .34) and mindfulness traits (partial ?2 = .31) and decreased self-focus style rumination (partial ?2 = .23) and empathic personal distress (partial ?2 = .12). Changes were observed in the desired direction for self-focus style reflection and empathic perspective taking/empathic concern. Discussion includes a review of the findings including examination of participant feedback regarding training experience. Study limitations and implications for counselor education, professional enhancement, and suggestions for future research are also offered.

Abstract:
Self-directed Learning Internet Modules based on gaming technology are making tremendous strides as tools to current training system for our military services. Currently, the US Army is testing the Every Soldier is a Sensor Simulation software (ES3) as part of the Every Soldiers a Sensor program that focuses on intelligence gathering and maintaining situational awareness. The primary training goal of this simulation is the training of individual soldiers on conducting "Active Surveillance" and "Threat Indicator Identification" where the soldier is an active participant in the process. Traditional training in intelligence gathering is based largely on cold war models. As a direct result of post 9 -11 activities and the Global War on Terrorism, changes to our process for intelligence gathering are continuing to be made to meet the challenges of the asymmetrical battlefield. This thesis assesses the contribution of game-based simulation in the advancement of individual soldier intelligence gathering skills by investigating performance as it relates to information processing, self-directed learning, and transfer. Specifically, this research will examine whether various combinations of directed and self-directed learning modules enhance soldier performance during intelligence gathering operations by determining the time, proportion of correct detections, weighted significance of detections, and accuracy of detections while participating in a live threat indicator lane as part of an experiment. The assessment is from a user and expert evaluator perspective and may be used to improve current and future gaming applications associated with individual training and intelligence gathering.

Augmented Reality can visually convey abstract concepts and 3D spatial information in context with real-world objects, which makes it an ideal tool for training and educational purposes. This masters thesis investigates the use of Augmented Reality to assist with training for manual assembly and maintenance tasks. Improving on prior research, this approach combines Augmented Reality with a robust Intelligent Tutoring System to provide a more effective learning experience. After developing a modular software framework, a prototype was created that teaches the user to assemble hardware components on a computer motherboard. A thorough evaluation of the prototype found that the new intelligent approach significantly improves the learning outcome over traditional Augmented Reality training methods that do not employ Intelligent Tutoring Systems.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of business training programs is to improve performance, which improved performance changes leadership behaviors based on the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) learned in training. One of the most common criticisms of leadership training is the tendency to focus on teaching theory but not on applying theory into practice, that is, transfer of learning. Research usually ends at the point of identifying, describing, or measuring factors that influence transfer. Ongoing research must identify what constructs in the transfer of learning process should be effectively changed or managed. There is a gap in research on the degree to which performance improvement through KSAs learned in a simulation training program actually transfer to the work environment. Additional research is needed that examines the relationship between transfer of learning and intent to transfer, which are critical outcomes in the field of human resource management and development. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between intent to transfer and four constructs in the transfer of learning process during a simulation-based leadership training program. Participants completed self-report assessments that measured the relationships between intent to transfer and four constructs: ability, motivation, work environment, and learner readiness. A correlational design was administered using a population of mid-level managers in a telecommunications organization.

Abstract:
Master Education - Med
Skills development is essential for every country to keep abreast with, at least one aspect of globalisation, namely, changes regarding production in the modern world. The way in which each country implements its skills development programme will depend on the unique history and circumstances of that country. Germany and Japan are amongst those countries that opted for a high skills strategy, whilst the United Kingdom opted for a low skills strategy. Kraak (2005) argues that South Africa would benefit by implementing a ‘multi-pronged’ skills strategy because many of its citizens are unskilled or have very low skills. This approach would cater for lowskills, intermediate-skills and continue to develop high skills. South Africa’s inputs-based education and training system has been replaced by a controversial outcomes-based approach. Many authors view an outcomes-based programme as lacking theory or content (Kraak, 1998; Young, 2004; Brown & Keep, 2000; Boreham, 2002), as reductive and mechanistic (Bates & Dutson, 1995, in Boreham, 2002) and mainly work-based and assessment-driven (Boreham, 2002). These criticisms question the quality of outcomes-based programmes. New laws promulgated by the South African government have introduced learnerships that form part of this new Skills Development strategy. This study reviewed the general policy on skills development and explored the experiences of learners who completed a Wholesale and Retail Learnership in the context of the structured college-based learning, the practical work-based learning as well as the integration of theory and practice, in South Africa. A qualitative approach was selected to enhance the researcher’s understanding of the personal perspectives and experiences of learners who completed the learnership. The case study approach was used with a focus on analysing the subjective opinions of this group of learners. The research methods employed to clarify the understanding of how these learners experienced the learnership were semi-structured interviews, observations and analysis of documents. The research shows that South Africa’s multi-level National Qualifications Framework provides for academic as well as vocational training and promotes a ‘multi-pronged’ skills strategy. The findings suggest that the learners on this learnership experienced the theoretical learning in the college and the practical learning on the job as an integrated whole. The study concludes that the structured college-based learning enabled the learners on this learnership to implement what they learnt at college in the workplace.

Abstract:
This thesis explores and describes the history of professional entry-level pharmacy education and its relationship to contemporary pharmacy practice in Queensland, in consequence of the transition from an Apprenticeship based training scheme to a university based Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree course in 1960. In so doing, particular reference is made to the development of pharmacy practice in Rockhampton, a major Central Queensland regional centre. The review program is undertaken within a broad historical background eliciting the changing role of pharmacy from historical arcane craft to complex science. Firstly, the evolution of pharmacy practice in Great Britain as the progenitor of Australian pharmacy is mapped; secondly, aspects of pre-degree pharmacy practice and education in Australia are explored; thirdly, the transition era spanning the advocacy, establishment, progression and consolidation of a pharmacy degree course at the University of Queensland is traversed by means of the retrospective perceptions of contemporary students in the light of their subsequent career path experiences. Influences on the replacement of an apprenticeship education in Queensland by a university degree are examined and the sometimes conflicting demands of contemporary education philosophies and professional practice realities are investigated. Refinements in educational philosophy and its implementation during the maturing phases of the degree course are charted and changes appraised during a time span over which the essential and recognisable elements of modern pharmaceutical practice and education strategy became manifest. The academic peaks and troughs of the new educational format in the context of contemporary practice are discussed and from them are derived conclusions for the further successful consolidation of multidisciplinary healthcare education and practice. The incursion of pharmacy practice into the domain of acute patient care in private hospitals - formerly the almost exclusive prerogative of medical and nursing personnel - is investigated through a regional case study. The local acceptance of clinical pharmacy by members of the health care team is evaluated and implications for practice are considered.

This study aims on the attention training system which is the combination of brainwave and physiological signals. When the trainer is in the process of the training, it is capable to understand the attention training condition through brainwave and heartbeat signals. Therefore this system could be used in hyperactive child behavior therapy and game device. .This system is consisted of three modules. First module is exploring the capture of brainwave pole and its processing and the heart rate measurement. The purpose is to test and monitor the brainwave and heart rate while training and further to evaluate the control. Module two discusses the infrared transmission unit. The light source used in the experiment is IR LED 940μm with the transmission custom coding, which is used to conduct EEG focus issue and the transmission of relaxed evaluation. The last module targets on the attention training system itself and how the implementation of this system could be achieved in reality. This study has been tested through experiments and shows the results: 1) significant improvement of 6.85% in attention degree after the attention training system; 2) the speed of heartbeat to attention degree has no major difference; 3) the speed of heartbeat to music rhythm is significantly different.

Abstract:
A research report submitted to the Wits School of Education, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education by combination of coursework and research Johannesburg, February 2018.
Worldwide, various governments have taken significant measures to promote vocational education in an attempt to position it as an equal alternative to academic education. The problem, however, is that in many countries neither young people nor their parents perceive vocational education as having the same value as academic education (Allais, Marock, & Molebatsi, 2014). This is in contrast to Continental European countries, such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland where approximately two thirds of youth completing general schooling each year select vocational education over university education. South Africa a country in which vocational education is extremely stigmatized, is reforming its apprenticeship system and has set itself a target of qualifying 24 000 new artisans by 2020 (DHET 2015). Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are viewed as key vehicles through which large numbers of artisans can be trained. However, employers do not have trust in the quality and capacity of public TVET colleges and have taken responsibility for training artisans through their own in-house training facilities and private training providers (National Treasury n.d.). The result is that TVET colleges have been side-lined in the supply chain for artisan development. It is against this background that the South African government is piloting a dual system apprenticeship project, which aims to: a) improve the quality of artisan training at public TVET colleges; b) build employer trust in the quality of the public artisan training system; and c) position TVET education as an attractive option for young people. This research is focused on apprentices training to become electricians through a dual apprenticeship model. The dual system integrates classroom theory with on-the-job instruction thus ensuring that learning is integrated and regularly reinforced. Through semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire, this study brings the voices of 95 electrical apprentices to bear in order to develop a much deeper, richer and nuanced understanding of how apprentices experience the artisan development system. It seeks to understand what motivates young people to enrol at a TVET college, and what apprentices’ experiences, perceptions and expectations are of dual system apprenticeships. The study provides insights into the merits and challenges of dual system apprenticeships within the South African context.

This research focuses on designing and implementing an IoT-Based Exercise Training System, called ITETS, which can be deployed in a user’s home to help a user have standard postures and give assistance remotely. ITETS can record user motions when doing exercises and process the recorded images into skeleton information. Professionals in different kinds of exercises can also record their standard postures and create training modules, respectively. In order to provide a self-learning environment, an IoT object, called RGB-D Capturer, is proposed. Three sample (standard) postures of volleyball players are introduced to test and evaluate the proposed system. The results show that a beginner can self-learn and improve standard postures by the assistance of the proposed system.

Precisely selecting the aiming angles is undoubtedly a challenge to inexperienced billiard players. However, most studies focusing on self-training systems for billiards are based on ceiling-mounted cameras, which are not practical to general users. As a result, we propose a vision-based self-training system for billiards, named “Improve My Shot,” to help inexperienced billiard players improve their shots. The system can generate top-view simulation table by integrating the side-view images from three or more angles and predict the trajectories of both the cue-ball and the object-ball after collision according to the additional images with the cue-sticks captured from intelligent glasses. The system consists of three main processing modules, including table contour extraction, ball contour extraction and cue-stick direction estimation. Each ball can be located in the real-world coordinates by integrating ball projections from different angles and can be visualized in the top-view simulation table. Finally, with the estimated cue-stick direction, we can predict the trajectories of both the cue-ball and the object-ball after collision. The trajectories are then visualized and presented on the intelligent glasses to provide users with instructions. In the proposed system, Google Glass is adopted for image capturing and result display. After users capture images via their Google Glass, the images are sent to the server for processing and the resulting images with the instruction lines are sent back for display afterwards, which not only enhances the practicability of the system but also helps billiard players improve their shot in more intuitive way.

Since a proficient golf swing is a key element for golf, golfers always make effort to improve their swing skills. However, if a golfer practices himself/herself without the supervision of a coach, he/she cannot effectively perceive postural faults in swings and improve the swing mechanisms. Moreover, improper postures may even cause harm to muscles and ligaments of the body. In this thesis, we propose a vision-based golf training system, named “Improve My Swing,” which aims at improving the golfer’s swing skills. We present two computation-efficient image processing algorithms, contour extraction and skeleton computation, to automatically detect feature lines. Then, we evaluate whether the golfer’s body is properly aligned based on professional golf training knowledge and provide instructions of posture adjustment to the golfer in a more intuitive and unambiguous manner. Different audio alerts will be given to the golfer according to which posture fault is detected. Images of incorrect postures with superimposed and visualized instructions are also saved for the golfers to review their own swings. For the user’s convenience, we also implement our system on Google Glass. After running our system with image processing, feature lines and instructions of posture adjustment are sent to Google Glass. The users can adjust their postures through the visualized instructions on Google Glass.

With the rapid development of Internet and multimedia technologies, the E-learning/distance-learning systems have been developed rapidly in recent years. Language training is one of the popular domains in distance-learning applications. To date, however, most of the systems are designed for listening, writing and reading training. Few systems are designed for "speaking" training. The objective of this study is to design a web-based speaking training system by integrating automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS) technologies and the proposed phonetic-string-based alignment method for pronunciation scoring. The alignment method based on dynamic programming strategy is adopted to detect possible mispronounced parts of a speaking. The scoring method is proposed to identify the mispronunciation in voice uttered by students. Thus the error indication fed back to learners can be used for further improvement. The experimental results show that the phonetic encoding schemes (e.g. CMUdict) are useful operators to reduce the distance of two different strings with similar pronunciation; hence, it can be used to compensate for some recognition errors from ASR. The prototype system has been implemented to assist students in speaking practice.

This study explored the use of a web-based application named Cognitive Apprenticeship Web-based Argumentation System (CAWA system) for the purpose of improving 5th grade students' argumentation skills, conceptual learning and critical thinking. One hundred eighty-nine students participated in this study. A quasi-experimental research design which contained several argument examples from Toulmin's 1958 book entitled “The Uses of Argument” and a conceptual problem which was revised from previous research (Osborne, Erduran, & Simon, 2003) were used in this study. This design incorporated the use of three research instruments: 1) Critical Thinking Test-I, 2) Two-tier Diagnostic Test of Light Misconception, and 3) Elementary Critical Thinking Disposition Appraisal. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on collected data for the purpose of better understanding of how CAWA system could affect students' academic achievement. A brief summary of the results are as follows: 1) The different instructional designs caused students' different performance of argumentation in the argumentation activity after the instruction and also in the argumentation activity of light concept. The average argumentation skill of "Cognitive Apprenticeship argumentation instructional group" (CAAIG) was higher than those of "general argumentation instructional group" (GAIG) and "self-argumentation group" (SAG), and the average argumentation skills of GAIG was higher than those of SAG in both argumentation activities. 2) After argumentation activity, the learning achievement on light concept of CAAIG and GAIG were higher than those of SAG. 3) The average post-tests on the "Critical Thinking Test - I" and "Elementary Critical Thinking Disposition Appraisal" of CAAIG and GAIG were higher than those of SAG significantly. Suggestions for future research in argumentation and science instruction were also proposed.

The purpose of the study is to develop a MObile Handwriting TEst Revision (MOHTER) system which can be applied in an instructional design based on a cognitive apprenticeship theory. The instruction model can be utilized for mathematics learning in higher education. The MOHTER system offers a mobile-device APP for students who use the APP in uploading their image version of answer sheets to the cloud server of the system. Subsequently, teachers utilize the proposed system to revise answer sheets via teachers’ handwriting through web interface or web APP. Here, a significant feature of the system is to integrate four operations, revising answer sheets with handwriting, assigning scores for answer sheets, writing teachers’ comments on students’ answer sheets, and selecting answer sheets to be modelling on class, in a single window as well as to operate these four actions through web applications. In this study, an exploratory method was conducted with 51 students. They were divided into the experimental and the control groups. The results reflect that the experimental group achieved a significant increase in the learning attitudes and learning satisfaction with the MOHTER system in comparison to the control group.

In this thesis, using the Kinect Somatosensory System by Microsoft. Be proposed to take the Taekwondo as an example of a practice sports system. With this system, User don’t have to wear extra sensors on the body. User can be carried out without the assistance with others during the training. We will track the movement to gain skeleton track rate by each actions skeleton after conducting experiment, and keep high success rate of retention. We propose to six basic attack moves for Users : First, testers select the desired motion. Then the motion information input obtained through Kinect depth obtained with three coordinate information and using OpenNI (Open Natural Interaction) carry out skeleton tracking and Feature Extraction. Then the trunk center coordinates normalization for the human skeleton and track to capture the action and demonstration by comparative analysis. The system will display the height、level range for the action and counting deviation. Final, output of the analysis results to the users, making the system to reach movement and practice.

Chinese regard the full-scale learning and ability training more and more important since English e-Learning has been growing up in recent year. From early TOEFL test to nowadays GEPT and TOEIC examination, they have already included speaking to integrate English with the practicability and communication in our life. Now, training speaking skill becomes a major objective in English learning issue. With different reasoning on pronouncing system to native speakers, we usually speak the incorrect pronunciations that have caused some misunderstanding and difficulty of the communication when we talk to them. Our thesis applies some related techniques of speech recognition and string alignment which are integrated to our web-based spoken English training system. First the speech recognition engine analyzes each word to get its time code. And then the alignment between our speech and text is deduced through Speech-Text Alignment with Dynamic Programming. We also employ the speech analysis of pitch tracking and syllable stress calculation for computing pitches. With these procedures, the audio timestamp and pitch of each word is obtained. Teachers can check and approve the analysis of student’s speech on this correction system and mark a variety of speaking mistakes on each word: syllable stress, pronunciation, liaison and intonation. We purpose a system that can help students correct their speaking and pronouncing on English through visualized annotations and it also has good effects on training native spoken English.
