Grâce aux concepts de méthode de traduction et de technique de traduction, l’analyse contrastive permet d’examiner non seulement les aspects textuels de la traduction assermentée, mais aussi la dimension paratextuelle de cette modalité de traduction spécialisée. Les résultats mettent en évidence la tension entre adéquation et acceptabilité que sous-tend toujours le processus de traduction et le rôle essentiel que joue la culture de départ dans la détermination de la méthode de traduction globale.

Résumé Nous proposons dans cet article une analyse multifactorielle et contrastive de la notion de saillance, telle qu’elle s’applique aux entités du discours et détermine l’interprétation référentielle d’une anaphore. En observant les phénomènes de saillance en français et en chinois, notre but est de montrer que la saillance est influencée par une multitude de facteurs, de manière plus ou moins comparable dans les deux langues. Nous classons ces facteurs selon leur nature syntaxique, sémantique, textuelle ou pragmatique. Notre approche contrastive permet d’illustrer que, si plusieurs divergences – qui sont souvent corrélées avec les différences typologiques des deux langues – s’observent au niveau syntaxique, de nombreux facteurs de saillance dérivent plutôt de principes cognitifs généraux.

Dans la perspective procédurale de la lecture, nous considérons les catégories textuelles : discours, genre et type de texte comme des déclencheurs d’attentes « descendants », et les unités linguistiques, à déterminer par leur forme, fonction et frontières, comme des déclencheurs « ascendants » du traitement « en ligne » du matériau linguistique arrivant. W artykule przeanalizowano pod różnym kątem przykłady modyfikacji związków frazeolo­gicznych, pochodzące z komentarzy i wypowiedzi do tekstów prasowych w polskich i francuskich wydaniach internetowych. Głównym zadaniem było pokazanie różnorodności użytych środków oraz porównanie sposobu ich funkcjonowania w obu językach. Analiza przykładów innowacji frazeologicznych dowodzi, że istnieją operacje zarówno wspólne, jak i odmienne dla obu systemów językowych. W niektórych modyfikacjach występuje gra słów, w której aktualne staje się znaczenie dosłowne związku lub w odpowiednim kontekście pojawia się nowe znaczenie.

Abstract:
Of the three logically possible approaches to contrastive left-dislocation (CLD) (base-generation cum deep anaphora; movement cum surface anaphora; elliptical clausal juxtaposition cum resumption), two are represented prominently in the recent literature. Ott’s (2014) account treats CLD uniformly in terms of clausal juxtaposition, the first clause being stripped down to its contrastive topic via an ellipsis operation said to be akin to sluicing. He argues that this analysis is superior to Grohmann’s (2003) approach, featuring movement within a single prolific domain and late spell-out of a resumptive element. Using data mainly from Hungarian and Dutch, we reveal problems for Ott’s biclausal account that undermine its apparent conceptual appeal and compromise its descriptive accuracy. We show that the ellipsis operation required is sui generis, that the approach fails to assimilate the crosslinguistic variation attested in the availability of multiple CLD to known cases of parametric variation in the left periphery, and that it undergenerates in several empirical domains, including P-stranding and “floated” arguments. Grohmann’s movement- cum-surface-anaphora analysis as it stands also cannot handle all these data, but it can be fixed to fit the facts. For Ott’s analysis, no patches seem available. Some further empirical properties of CLD appear underivable from either of these approaches. For these, the base-generation- cum-deep-anaphora analysis can be considered.

The aim of this paper is to discuss topics in contrastive morphology, combining the perspectives of morphological theory and contrastive linguistics. After an overview of the recent literature on contrastive morphology and the relevant ‘tertia comparationis’ in Section 2, Section 3 focuses on the main differences between compounding in Modern Greek and Italian (e.g. the position of the morphological head, the pattern stem+stem in Modern Greek vs. the pattern word+word in Italian). The diachronic dimension, the inflectional system and the role of syntax are put forward as explanatory factors for the differences between the two languages. Two recent types of compounds, [V+V] V in Modern Greek and [V+N] N in Italian, are therefore examined contrastively. The contrastive analysis of compounding is based on three types of equivalence: ‘system equivalence’, ‘rule equivalence’, and ‘morphological age equivalence’. The main conclusion is that a contrastive approach to morphology enables us to deepen our understanding of both the fundamental distinction and the fundamental interconnection between morphology and syntax.

The English gerund and its Spanish equivalents show different levels of conceptualization when carrying out a contrastive study. In particular, we will focus on the conceptualization of the Spanish equivalents which correspond to the English construction [physical perception verb + Noun Phrase + -ing form]. There are certain difficulties in relation to our study. Firstly, the traditional characterization of the English gerund, based on tense and aspect criteria, proves to be inadequate to establish its meaning. Secondly, the -ing form with physical perception verbs has been interpreted as a participle. In this paper, we will propose that the -ing form with physical perception verbs can also have a gerundial reading. In addition, we will argue that the cognitive approach provides a valid characterization of the English gerund which constitutes, in turn, the base for the contrastive cognitive study. Regarding the contrastive study, the Spanish equivalents exploit, in general, the eventive reading of the English gerund.El gerundio inglés y sus equivalentes españoles muestran diferentes niveles de conceptualización al llevar a cabo un estudio contrastivo. En particular, nos centramos en la conceptualización de los equivalentes españoles que corresponden a la construcción inglesa [verbos de percepción física + frase nominal+ forma en -ing]. Hay ciertas dificultades relacionadas con nuestro estudio. En primer lugar, la caracterización tradicional del gerundio inglés, basada en criterios temporales y aspectuales, no resulta adecuada para establecer su significado. En segundo lugar, la forma en -ing con verbos de percepción física se ha interpretado como participio. En este artículo, proponemos que la forma en -ing con verbos de percepción física puede tener también una lectura gerundiva. Además, sostenemos que el enfoque cognitivo proporciona una caracterización válida del gerundio inglés que constituye, a su vez, la base para el estudio contrastivo cognitivo. En cuanto al estudio contrastivo, los equivalentes españoles explotan, en general, la lectura eventiva del gerundio inglés.

Contrastive analysis is aimed to identify aspects of the differences or dissimilarities between two or more languages being contrasted. There are two kinds of approach in contrastive analysis, applied contrastive analysis and pure contrastive analysis. Both approaches contrast the first and second language, but different in the objective. Applied contrastive analysis is aimed to solve pedagogical problems, while the pure one is aimed to study language typology. Through contrastive approach there will be characteristic of every language and it is known that cultural diversity (the culture between first and second language) implicates on language forms. There are four steps to get through to contrast the components of the two languages being compared, namely (1) collecting the desired data (2) displaying a comparison in the same units of language through language transfer, (3) identifying the different elements that exist in the language, and (4) formulating the contrasts in the rule.

This study evaluated effectiveness of two different approaches to accent modification for non-native English speakers. Eight native Korean speakers of English participated. English labio-dental fricatives, liquids, and front vowels were targeted. Half of the participants received accent modification services with a focus on individual sound drills (segmental approach) while the other half received services using minimal pairs (contrastive approach). The percentage of correct pronunciation was measured for each consonant and vowel category during each session. The results of this study revealed that both groups of Korean speakers showed a similar percentage of correct pronunciation for consonant production. However, those who received the contrastive approach demonstrated higher accuracy in vowel production than those who received the segmental approach. The results of this study suggest that contrastive approaches may be useful for non-native English speakers of Korean background, especially for vowel production.

Se ofrece una actividad en la que se trabaja el conflicto aparente y el conflicto subyacente, donde los roles de género pueden ofrecer respuestas diferentes y redefinir las estructuras narratológicas. El alumnado trabaja sobre su propia creación literaria para definir sus expectativas literarias y los conflictos hegemónicos que se presentan en las historias de fantasía y ficción de su contexto social e ideológico. El contraste de los textos de creación propia con el análisis de textos y ejemplos audiovisuales de fantasía y ciencia ficción de creadoras literarias y de personajes femeninos, presenta una oportunidad para generar un espacio contrastivo y constructivo, a la vez que enlaza con competencias educativas y facilita un acercamiento comparativo a la critica literaria. This didactic proposal exemplifies the use of creative writing as a way to approach gender studies, through the creation of a fantasy hero. The activity offers the possibility of working both the apparent and underlaying conflicts, where gender roles can offer different answers and redefine narratological structures. The students work on their own literary creation to define their literary expectations and the predominant conflicts that appear in fantasy and fiction stories in their social and ideological context. The contrast of their own textual creations with the analyses of textual and audiovisual examples from fantasy and science fiction by female authors and including female characters offers the possibility of generating a contrastive and constructivespace, which also links to educational competences and facilitates a comparatist approach to literary criticism.

Abstract In the Netherlands, the similar origin Dutch shares with German lends itself to a contrastive approach to teaching and learning German and, for this reason, is promoted on all levels. This leads to Dutch textbooks and grammars being almost exclusively contrastive in nature, irrespective of the targeted language level, which is also reflected in the unanimous scientific debate. This paper discusses to which degree construction grammar approaches and/or contrastive approaches can assist the Dutch learner of German in their language acquisition. Advanced Dutch learners of German’s use - or lack thereof - of sollen ‘are supposed to’ vs. sollten ‘should’ in written texts is analyzed and compared to the presentation of this topic in Dutch teaching materials for German as a foreign language. Furthermore, the questions are raised whether a contrastive approach mainly promotes the strategy of avoiding errors stemming from L1 inferences as well as whether a construction grammar approach leads to a more adequate acquisition of the target language. Based on these discussions, possible implementations for teaching soll(t)en to Dutch learners of German are proposed.

Abstract:
The drug approval process is the vehicle through which drug sponsors formally approve a new pharmaceutical for sale and marketing. The goals of the approval process are to provide enough information about the drug safety and efficacy in human beings. Every country has its own regulatory authority, which is responsible to enforce the rules and regulations and issue the guidelines to regulate the marketing of the drugs. The approval process starts with preclinical testing. For drugs that appear safe, an investigational new drug application (IND) is filed. If approved, clinical trials begin with phase 1 study that focus on safety and pharmacology. Phase 2 studies examine the effectiveness of the compound. Phase 3 is the final step before submitting a new drug application to the authority. A New Drug Application (NDA) contains all the information obtained during all phases of testing. Phase 4 studies, or post-marketing studies, are conducted after a product is approved.

Este trabalho discute a presença de elementos trágicos nas obras Édipo Rei e Lavoura Arcaica, bem como o sentido do trágico. Para tanto, pesquisou-se o texto de Raduan Nassar, nas situações em que se podem verificar os aspectos configuradores do trágico, tais como foram apresentados no teatro grego: desmedida (hybris), erro trágico (hamartia), efeito catártico ou de purgação (katharsis), inversão da situação da personagem (peripeteia), reconhecimento (anagnorisis) e catástrofe (sparagmos). Para o resultado prático dos objetivos desejados, desenvolvemos uma leitura contrastiva entre Édipo Rei, de Sófocles e Lavoura Arcaica, de Raduan Nassar, pesquisando os elementos em que o sentido do trágico aproximam ou distanciam o discurso de Raduan do texto trágico de Sófocles. *** The tragic in Oedipus the King and To the Left of the Father: contrastive reading ***This work discusses of the presence of tragic elements in the literary work of Oedipus the King and To the Left of the Father, as well as the sense of the tragic. In order to do this, it was studied the text of Raduan Nassar, searching for examples in which it is possible to verify characterized aspects of the tragic, such as the ones presented in the Greek theater: excesses (hybris), tragic error (hamartia), cathartics or purgation effect (katharsis), inversion of the situation of the personage (peripeteia), recognition (anagnorisis) and catastrophe (sparagmos). For a more practical result of the aimed objectives, we developed a contrasting reading between Oedipus the King, of Sófocles and To the Left of the Father, of Raduan Nassar, searching for elements where the sense of the tragic approaches or make Raduan’s speech distant from the tragic text of Sófocles.Keywords: Sófocles; Raduan Nassar; classic; modern; tragic elements.

Phraseology is seen as one of the key elements and arguably the most productive part of any language. %e paper is focused on collocations and separates them from other phraseological units, such as idioms or compounds. Highlighting the difference between a monolingual and a bilingual (i.e. contrastive) approach to collocation, the article presents two distinct classes of collocations: grammatical and lexical. %e latter, treated contrastively, represent the focal point of the paper, since they are an unending source of translation errors to both students of translation and professional translators. %e author introduces a methodology of systematic classification of lexical collocations applied on the Slovene-English language pair and based on structural (lexical congruence) and semantic (translational predictability) criteria.

This study focuses on analyzing and contrasting sentence pattern differences in both English and Sigulai languages. The study intends to find out the differences in sentence pattern between English and Sigulai language and how the sentence pattern of two languages are different. This current study was conducted by employing the qualitative method by using the contrastive analysis approach. Purposive sampling was used to select samples comprising two native-Simeulue students studying in Banda who speaks Sigulai. The findings show that there were contrast differences in verbal and nominal sentence patterns between English and Sigulai. Moreover, it can be concluded that Sigulai language has a non-configurational sentence pattern as many other Austronesian languages in Aceh and Indonesia in general.

Au cours des dernières décennies où l’on assiste à une refondation de la morphologie, la discipline s’intéresse de plus en plus à des phénomènes « périphériques », « marginaux », « irréguliers » ou « extragrammaticaux », à des phénomènes n’appartenant pas aux « régions nodales » de la morphologie. Le présent numéro de Linguistica, premier numéro thématique de notre revue, réunit des études qui s’intéres- sent aux frontières internes et externes de la morphologie. La diversité et la richesse des thèmes abordés et des approches proposées témoignent d’un intérêt croissant que les linguistes, non pas uniquement les morphologues, portent à cette thématique.Les articles proposés s’articulent autour de cinq axes majeurs.Un premier axe rassemble les articles qui étudient les frontières entre différentes composantes de la morphologie. L’étude de Michel Roché examine les contraintes lexicales et morphophonologiques sur le paradigme des dérivés en –aie. Les résultats de son analyse remettent en question la notion de « règle de construction des lexèmes ». Irena Stramljič Breznik et Ines Voršič se penchent sur les néologismes de sport en slovène et essaient d’évaluer la productivité ou la créativité des procédés morphologiques en jeu. Dans une étude d’inspiration cognitiviste, Alexandra Bagasheva aborde l’hétérogénéité des verbes composés en anglais. En s’appuyant sur les données fournies par les para- digmes verbaux du maltais, Maris Camilleri examine la complexité du phénomène de classes flexionnelles basées sur les radicaux. Deux articles adoptent une perspective contrastive: celui d’Eva Sicherl et Andreja Žele étudie la productivité des diminutifs nominaux en slovène et en anglais ; celui de Marie-Anne Berron et Marie Mouton propose une analyse détaillée de l’importance quantificative et qualificative des procédés de la morphologie marginale dans le slam en France et en Allemagne. Géraldine Walther présente un nouveau modèle général, inscrit dans une approche réalisationnelle, qui permet d’évaluer et de formaliser la (non-)canonicité de phénomènes flexionnels.Un deuxième axe se situe sur la frontière séparant la morphologie dérivationnelle de la morphologie flexionnelle. Tatjana Marvin se penche sur le problème de la préservation de l’accent dans les dérivés anglais, mettant en comparaison les approches de Chomsky et de Marantz avec celle de la théorie de l’Optimalité. L’article de Patrizia Cordin explore la façon dont les constructions locatives verbales dans les langues et les dialectes romans, notamment dans le dialecte trentin, ont perdu en partie leur sens spatial au profit d’un sens grammatical plus abstrait (aspect, résultat, intensité etc.). Se focalisant sur la langue indigène d’Australie kayerdild, Erich Round insiste sur l’utilité de la notion de « morphome » qui permet d’instaurer un niveau de représentation linguistique intermédiaire entre les niveaux lexical, morphosyntaxique et morphophonologique. La contribution de Varja Cvetko Orešnik, qui adopte le cadre théorique de l’école ljubljanaise de la syntaxe naturelle, apporte quelques données nouvelles sur la morphophonologie et la morphosyntaxe du verbe en ancien indien.Les deux articles suivants examinent des questions d’ordre morphologique aux- quelles se heurtent les langues entrant en contact : Georgia Zellou traite du cas du cir- confixe /ta...-t/ que l’arabe marocain a emprunté au berbère, tandis que Chikako Shigemori Bučar analyse le sort réservé aux emprunts japonais en slovène.L’axe diachronique est exploré principalement par les articles de Douglas Lightfoot, de Javier E. Marc Plénat étudie en détail les contraintes morphologiques, syntaxiques et phonologiques pesant sur la liaison de l’adjectif au masculin singulier sur le nom en français. Abstract:
This paper examines the behavior of contrastive –wa in Japanese written discourse. While supporting its local nature (Clancy and Downing 1987), the paper argues, based on a survey of newspapers, that localness alone is not sufficient to understand the nature of contrast. It proposes that the use of contrastive –wa is motivated by how the writer perceives the world, or what Chafe (1994) calls ‘conscious experience’. We propose literal opposition, evaluation, association, and conflict as its main components. In the final part, the paper relates the results to the recent study on Contrastive Topic (Lee 1999, 2000, 2003), stating that the CT-approach is still unable to account for the entire range of phenomena discovered. The paper suggests that the discrepancies arise because of the fact that natural data integrates the writer’s context-specific intentions, to which priority is not given in formalistic approaches.

This article proposes a novel analysis of contrastive left-dislocation (CLD), according to which the left-dislocated XP is a remnant of clausal ellipsis. This analysis makes sense of the otherwise paradoxical fact that the dislocated XP shows connectivity into the clause it precedes, while other properties betray its clause-external status. The paradox is resolved by analyzing CLD as a juxtaposition of two parallel clauses, the first of which is reduced by deletion at PF. Akin to recent treatments of sluicing, fragment answers, split questions, and other phenomena, the analysis reduces CLD to an interplay of Ā-movement and ellipsis, thereby removing constructional residue from the theory of Universal Grammar.

Franconian has a contrast between two tone accents, commonly referred to as Accent 1 and Accent 2. Traditional autosegmental analyses of the phenomenon suggest that this opposition derives from the presence of lexical tone. In contrast to this ‘tonal approach’, I argue that the Franconian accent contrast is based on contrastive foot structure – there is no tone in the lexicon. This ‘metrical approach’ not only accounts for the tonal differences between the accents, but also captures a variety of facts that are hard to incorporate into a synchronic tonal analysis, involving morphological alternations between Accent 1 and Accent 2, as well as the effects of vowel duration, vowel quality and consonant quality on accent-class membership. The metrical analysis of these patterns is in line with similar approaches to tone-accent contrasts in North Germanic and Scottish Gaelic.
