Full textThis Ph.D. dissertation examines the changes in the Tunisian rural areas from the perspective of land appropriation in the region of Regueb as a case study. Through an in situ investigation combining observations, questionnaires and interviews, the study focuses on the evolution of the land uses and the bundles of powers (access, management, sales) endowed by the farmers. This approach makes it possible to understand how this evolution both impacts the organisation of the rural space and how it is a consequence of it. Our data underlines the growing diversity of the farmers’ logic (peasant, entrepreneurial, speculative) and the social and economic inequalities between the farmers. This process is a result of the public policies that were enforced at the start of the colonial capitalist economy (end of the 19th century). The individualization of ownership and the land commodification have weakened the social security that used to exist at the time of the old common tribal territory, exposing the owners to the instability of the market and land precariousness. On the one hand, peasants are tempted to sell their land in an entrepreneurial way; on the other hand, they are willing to keep it for its symbolic value and as a securing capital. This precariousness is also fed by the multifaceted pressure of the land market and by the inequalities of access to the principal resources (money, water, market). In spite of the strategies they use, peasants face huge constraints. This study brings new light on the social contests that have been affecting the region since 2010 and contributed to the departure of President Ben Ali leave in 2011

Full textThis dissertation aims at grasping the links between water appropriation and production of space through the spatial dimension of water law. It is based on a case study of the Elqui Valley, located in a semi-arid region of northern Chile. The relationship between law and space has been analyzed examining the geolegal strategies deployed by the actors and their effects on the development of mining, agricultural and real estate activities. For this purpose, this dissertation proposes the concept of fluvial geolegal system to study the power relations that are tied around the elaboration of the rules of sharing, distribution and administration of water, in a multi-scale and diachronic perspective. The thesis identifies a number of water appropriation modalities that have participated in the expansion of extractive sectors since the second half of the twentieth century. The geolegal devices used in this process produce the artificialisation of the watershed. However, the latter is not overarching since some water margins show irrigation practices and other water concepts associated with the existence of a plural economy. The fate of these margins remains unclear, because they are subjected of to water appropriation practices which are the cause of water shortages. Organizations of water users and especially Supervisory Boards play a key role in the artificialization of these margins or in their protection. The access to new knowledge and the reconfiguration of the relation with local water knowledge explain the different positions of the two Supervisory Boards under scrutiny, whose decisions contribute to the space production

Full textThis research seeks to analyse processes of space appropriation pertaining to the insertion of ethnic trade in the areas of Château Rouge, Paris and Brixton, London. It is focused on the ways in which this trade involving populations of African or Caribbean descent affects the visibility of these groups within the urban space. The existing literature on ethnic entrepreneurship and ethnic trade is focused on the entrepreneurial side of migrant-owned businesses and has discussed the economic success of minorities as well as the role of ethnic resources in the advent and management of these businesses. While these contributions have greatly enhanced our understanding of the migrants’ economic activities, they rarely have questioned how ethnic trade participates in the marking of urban space. This research contributes to the literature by focusing on entrepreneurs and customers rather than entrepreneurs alone, and especially on the sets of symbolic markers that are attached to space by the practices of ethnic trade. This research shows that the insertion of ethnic trade in Château Rouge and Brixton leads to different outcomes in terms space appropriation by African and Caribbean populations, representations of otherness in the urban space, and public discourses and narratives on the visibility of ethnic trade and migrant populations
Scordel, Maggie. "Le seuil du lieu marchand : liminarité et rites de passage de l’expérience de magasinage." Thesis, Paris 9, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA090064.
Full textThis thesis studies the store entrance in a spatial and experiential way. Using both the conceptual framework of environmental psychological sociology and experiential marketing, we study the entrance into the market place and consumption through space appropriation strategies and a process of liminality which results in rites of passage. Combining qualitative methodologies we answer to our research issue: How retail space fences are involved in creating a shopping experience? After an exploratory study, our second study made with Guerlain allows us to analyze the shopping experience in the context of many stores designs located in various commercial environments. Our results show that the creation of the shopping experience is a co-production resulting from the interaction between the types of intermediate spaces delimiting the store, the ritualization of experience and the appropriation process of consumers

Full textThis comparative research - in France and Poland - was conducted in Lyon and Cracow. The purpose of the work is social tourism for children, more specifically the “discovery classes” in France and the “green schools” in Poland, the school trips constituting both a life experience and a time of collective education. The object of the research is primary schools. The work is part of a broader problem of the acquisition of geographical knowledge. The subject of the research mobilizes the field of tourism since the practices that stem from it are ways and means of appropriation of space that individuals implement in the construction of representations of space. Through experience, the individual constructs an interior model of his or her environment. This research project studies the modalities of spatial learning. The objective is to understand if the experience of school trips modifies children’s spatial representations. To ensure that all children have an equal opportunity to build their own spatial capital, research also examines the influence on their representations of previous spatial mobility. In order to examine the children’s spatial representations, both discursive (questionnaires) and graphics data (mental maps) are mobilized. The research, carried out with 192 pupils in Lyon and Cracow, is related to two disciplines, geography and psychology. It is supported by the postulate of spatial representations within the framework of the paradigm of spatial production. The work is part of an approach to geography, in which the “espace vécu” is the central preoccupation

Full textWith 80 million people uprooted around the world, refuge spaces are coming to be the most visible urban transformations of modern times. These spaces, whose primary function is to shelter, often accommodate refugees for decades. Yet, host states, mostly developing countries, continue to host refugees without adopting comprehensive, long-term strategies for their integration, causing acute political, socio-economic, and humanitarian problems. The lack of a long-term solution is explicitly revealed by the conceptions of refugee spaces, often designed as temporary solutions. From a theoretical perspective, while social scientists and geographers have widely documented the geopolitical and anthropological aspects of forced migrations, they have neglected the concept of space appropriation and the production of place identity in refugee spaces. Indeed, their classification of space/place is often based on dichotomous conceptualizations and differs from refugees’ real-life experience. This research examines refugee spaces through the lenses of power, culture, and space. It provides new evidence on the appropriation of these spaces through refugees’ social, economic, and political practices, their interventions on space, and their perceptions of their new living environment. It also examines the impact of the strategies adopted by the international community, host governments, humanitarian organizations, and local communities. The research method is qualitative and exploratory; it is based on a multiple case study design. This methodological approach provides an in-depth understanding of refugees' perceptions on the socio-political environment undergirding displacement and on their representations of space. Three space typologies — urban dwellings, informal settlements, and organized camps — are studied with the purpose of assessing the relevance of the space-type in relation to its appropriation. The study uses ethnography as a complementary methodological approach, shedding light on the evolution of refugees’ living conditions over time and the transformation of their spaces from a cultural standpoint. It specifically focuses on Syrian refugees in Lebanon, a country which hosts the largest number of refugees per capita in the world. Overwhelmed by the number of refugees hosted, Lebanon excludes Syrian refugees from formal legal, economic, and urban systems, limiting their access to the territory, reducing the duration of their stay, and preventing the tangible and intangible consolidation of their living spaces. Yet, eight years later, the strategies adopted by the Lebanese government have proven unsuccessful: the number of Syrian refugees is roughly the same as at the beginning of the conflict and most of their spaces have been ghettoized. Results show that: 1) complex geometries of political, economic, and social powers determine the appropriation of refugee spaces; 2) weak state authority fragments traditional governance systems which leads to the emergence of informal power structures that control refugees and their spaces; 3) refugees’ exclusion exacerbates their vulnerability, while benefitting local stakeholders, subsequently reducing their chances of emigration and leading to the ghettoization of their living spaces; 4) the typology of spaces is not a major variable in relation to their appropriation; 5) the rooting of identity in the place of origin is an idea based on anti-migration political viewpoints; refugee spaces can evolve along a continuum between temporary non-places and socio-cultural places of life depending on the opportunities and challenges in the host context. Transcending the stigmatization, marginalization, and homogenization of refugee spaces, this research reveals the intimate reality of these spaces. It shows that they often become places of everyday life for refugees who form culturally dissimilar and economically hierarchical social groups. From a theoretical point of view, this research shows that hosting policies are often based on hostipitality, or a hostile form of hospitality which exacerbate refugees’ vulnerability and facilitates their exploitation. It shows that refugees’ appropriation and control of their living spaces increase proportionally with their legal inclusion and their socio-economic empowerment by the host state, inciting the rhizomic reproducibility of their individual and collective identity in their new habitat. From a practical point of view, the research shows that hosting policies adopted on the pretext of shortening the duration of refugees’ settlement are in fact in the interest of state and private actors. With the purpose of achieving spatial justice, the study recommends a change of paradigm in refugee policies with approaches that are more inclusive towards refugees leading to their self-management and their development, and adapted to the use and duration of their living spaces.

Full textThis thesis examines the recent mobilization of citizens against urban densification in St-Petersburg, Russia. Urban spaces have undergone major transformations following the collapse of the communist regime. The commercialization of public spaces has caused a huge increase in the number of constructions in St-Petersburg. The redefinition of urban space has led to an erosion of what had been considered public spaces and has greatly affected the city’s green space. In the past few years a great number of voices have been raised to condemn this privatization of public space. In the opinion of many, in-fill construction can lead to a catastrophe: the disappearance of St-Petersburg. I have examined three aspects of this mobilization: 1) the opposition of residents against projects threatening their immediate living space; 2) the efforts displayed by local organizations to save public spaces and; 3) the mobilization against the destruction of historical monuments. My aim was to understand why the battle against urban densification has become the number one cause around which inhabitants of St-Petersburg mobilize today. I have tried to understand the meaning of this mobilization, and looked into the reasons why residents become activists. I have investigated the history of the city and its past tradition of resistance to see if I could find insights into current anti-densification movements. Since its very foundation St-Petersburg has developed its own identity, which has been transmitted from generation to generation and has survived wars, revolutions and political changes. The stories and actions of residents involved in the battle against in-fill construction reveal many issues pertaining to contemporary Russian society, including the growing gap between the wealthy and the rest of the population, and the loss of trust in the political class. From the standpoint of its opponents, urban densification is harmful to the quality of life of residents. But the residents of St-Petersburg who unite to protect their city also fear that urban densification will lead to the vanishing of a memory and a culture held by all these threatened places. By expressing their disagreement concerning construction projects, these residents wish to have their voices heard. They also wish to participate actively in the elaboration of a vision of their city that would take into account the interests of all citizens, not only a select few. In this sense, citizen mobilization against urban densification represents an attempt at (re)appropriating the city, both on a material and symbolic level.
