Abstract:
Abstract A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) recommendations for 11–150 kg PIC pigs housed under commercial conditions. Data from 29 trials dating from 2013 to 2020 utilizing 48,338 pigs were recorded in a database. Number of pens/treatment and pigs/trial ranged from 9 to 16 and 12 to 25, respectively. Sire lines were PIC 337 in 25 trials, PIC 327 in 3 trials, and PIC TR4 and 327 in 1 trial. Dam lines were PIC Camborough in 18 trials and PIC Camborough 29 in 9 trials. The SID Lys to calorie ratio curves were built for both metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy (NE) systems using the feed ingredient composition in NRC (2012) for energy levels. The response variables average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (G:F) were analyzed using generalized linear and non-linear mixed models with heterogeneous variance (Gonçalves et al., 2016). Each treatment mean within a trial (n = 288) was considered the experimental unit and each trial was used as a random effect. The models were developed for mixed gender pigs and the PIC 337 growth curves were used to estimate the recommendations for barrows and gilts. There was no evidence for an interaction between sire lines or dam lines and treatment (P > 0.10). The SID Lys to calorie recommendations are based on the average for ADG and G:F (Table 1). At these levels, approximately 100% of maximum ADG and 99.4% of maximum G:F are achieved. The NE to ME ratio that results in a similar SID Lys recommendation as a percentage of the diet ranged from approximately 0.72 to 0.74. The updated biological requirements for PIC pigs remained similar compared to previous PIC recommendations (Gonçalves et al., 2017). However, the requirement estimates have been adjusted for late nursery and late finishing phases.

Abstract:
Telomerase synthesizes tandem repeats of the sequence d(TTGGGG) onto input d(TTGGGG)n primer oligonucleotides (C. W. Greider and E. H. Blackburn, Cell 43:405-413). An intrinsic RNA component of the enzyme provides the template for d(TTGGGG)n repeat synthesis [C. W. Greider and E. H. Blackburn, Nature (London) 337:331-337, 1989; G.-L. Lu, J. D. Bradley, L. D. Attardi, and E. H. Blackburn, Nature (London) 344:126-132, 1990]. In a typical reaction, products greater than 2,000 nucleotides were synthesized in 60 min. Dilution and primer challenge experiments showed that these long products were synthesized processively. The apparent processivity was not due to a higher affinity of the enzyme for long d(TTGGGG) products over the shorter competitors. The degree of processivity was quantitated; telomerase synthesized approximately 520 nucleotides before half of the enzyme had dissociated. After dissociating, telomerase reinitiated d(TTGGGG)n synthesis on new primer oligonucleotides. The products from a telomerase reaction have a characteristic 6-nucleotide banding pattern (C. W. Greider and E. H. Blackburn, Cell 51:887-898, 1987). A strong pause in the reaction occurs after the addition of the first G in the sequence d(TTGGGG). Both the processivity and the banding pattern analysis imply that in the elongation mechanism there must be a translocation step after the 9 nucleotides of internal template RNA have been copied to the extreme 5' end.

Abstract:
The paper presents the assessment of the resources of methane considered as the main mineral in the most prospective selected areas of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland in the region of undeveloped deposits. The methane resources were estimated by means of a volumetric method at three depth levels, 1000, 1250, and 1500 m. A part of the Studzienice deposit comprising three coal seams, 333, 336, and 337, located in a methane zone was chosen for the numerical modeling of simulated methane production. The presented static 3D model has been developed using Petrel Schlumberger software. The total resources of methane in the area amount to approximately 446.5 million of Nm3. Numerical simulations of methane production from the selected coal seams with hydraulic fracturing were conducted by means of Schlumberger ECLIPSE reservoir simulator. Based on the simulations, it was concluded that, in the first six months of the simulations, water is produced from the seams, which is connected with the decrease in the rock mass pressure. The process prompts methane desorption from the coal matrix, which in turn results in a total methane production of 76.2 million of Nm3 within the five-year period of the simulations, which constitutes about 17% of total methane resources (GIP). The paper also presents a detailed analysis of Polish legislation concerning the activities aimed at prospecting, exploring, and extracting the deposits of hydrocarbons.

Abstract:
The writing is an essential skill to share with the scientific community the findings obtained by the researchers; however, it requires the implementation of a series of strategies whose domain has not yet been acquired by researchers with less experience. This research has a double objective; on the one hand, it tries to know the opinion of the PhD students about their own process of scientific writing and, on the other, it analyzes the scientific texts produced by the novice researchers. For this, two instruments have been created: a brief questionnaire and a system of categories to analyze the 397 errors that have been detected in the scientific texts written by 11 PhD students from different areas chosen for convenience. The results show that approximately 40% of researchers with little experience previously plan the texts they write and, for the most part, use a scheme for this. In addition, more than 90% believe that the most complicated thing is to provide coherence and cohesion to the scientific text. In relation to errors, the most common occur in the introduction (43.6%) and the method (18.4%) of the text and are grammatical (39%) and APA regulations (24.9 %). Finally, some limitations of the study are discussed.

Impedance spectroscopic investigations of Ag5Te2Cl0.8Br0.2, a selected representative of the solid solutions Ag5Te2Cl1−xBrx with x = 0 - 1, proved the mixed-conducting property of this class of materials. Two polymorphs are realized in the temperature range of 309 to 410 K, the monoclinic β - phase (space group P21/n) and the tetragonal α-phase (space group I4/mcm) with an order-disorder phase transition temperature of 336 K (DSC). A sharp increase of the total and ionic conductivity can be observed at 337 K, in good accordance with the phase transition temperature. The electronic conductivity exceeds the ionic conductivity by approximately one order of magnitude over a wide range of temperature. Conductivities are σion = 6.9×10−5 (309 K) and σtot = 4.80×10−4 Ω−1 cm−1 (310 K) for β -Ag5Te2Cl0.8Br0.2 and σion = 1.6×10−2 (395 K) and σtot = 1.73×10−1 Ω−1 cm−1 (394 K) for α-Ag5Te2Cl0.8Br0.2.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 2200 ADAMTS13 specifically cleaves multimeric von Willebrand factor (VWF) into smaller molecules to reduce its high reactivity with platelets. The disintegrin-like (D) domain, adjacent to the catalytic domain of ADAMTS13, plays an important role in the process of VWF cleavage. In this study, we aimed to elucidate critical peptide sequences in D-domain involved in the interaction with VWF. A series of partially overlapping peptide sequences, approximately 20 amino acids in length, covering the D-domain, were synthesized and the inhibitory effects on the catalytic activity of plasma ADAMTS13 was examined using FRETS-VWF73 assay. Consequently, some synthetic peptides were selected and the minimal length necessary for the inhibitory effect was determined as TFAREHLDMCQALSC (peptide323-337). Removal of the amino-terminal threonine diminished the inhibitory effect moderately, although deletion of the carboxyl-terminal cysteine abolished it completely. According to the amino acids alignment of ADAMTS family, this peptide sequence is not conserved, highlighting the specific role in the interaction with its substrate. From the recent analysis of crystal structure, amino-terminal half of the peptide323-337, TFAREHL (323-329), was disordered and designated as the variable (V) loop, which creates one of VWF-binding exosites (Akiyama, et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 2009; 106:19274-9). We hypothesized that the amino-terminal amino acids of the peptide323-337 contribute to VWF binding, whereas the carboxyl-terminal amino acids allow the structural stability of the peptide conformation. To evaluate the effect of carboxyl-terminal cysteine at 337, other synthetic peptides with alanine, serine, glycine or phenylalanine instead of the cysteine (C337A, C337S, C337G, or C337F) were tested about their inhibitory effects on the catalytic activity. Interestingly, C337A, C337S, C337G peptides exhibited slightly weaker inhibitory effects on VWF73 catalysis, although C337F peptide showed stronger inhibition than wild-type sequence, suggesting that the residue 337 regulates the characteristics of the peptide323-337. From the results of peptide screening, the amino- and carboxyl-terminal amino acids of the peptide323-337, TFAREHLDMCQALSC, likely play key roles in the inhibitory effects; therefore, the middle part of the sequence, HLDMC, was replaced by 5 alanines (AAAAA) or reversed sequence CMDLH. Surprisingly, the converted peptides still retained the equivalent level of inhibitory effects, indicating both sides of the amino- and carboxyl-terminal amino acids were especially significant in the interaction with VWF. In conclusion, we characterized the peptide sequence, TFAREHLDMCQALSC (323-337), in D-domain. The peptide clearly inhibited the cleavage of VWF73 and the both sides of amino- and carboxyl-terminal amino acids seemed especially important. The peptide sequence is supposed to bind to VWF for the precise cleavage in the process of proteolysis. By modifying this peptide sequence, such variant ADAMTS13 as gain-of-function recombinants might be developed, leading to an alternative anti-thrombotic drug. Abstract:
ABSTRACT The hormonal regulation of GH binding and the effects of GH on glucose metabolism were studied in hypophysectomized rats. Male rats (130–140 g) were hypophysectomized and on the day after the operation treatment with one or a combination of two hormones was started and continued for 7 days. The different hormonal treatments were (1) cortisone acetate, (2) insulin, (3) insulin plus cortisone acetate, (4) thyroxine, (5) thyroxine plus cortisone acetate and (6) GH. Glucose metabolism was studied by determining the production of CO2 from [14C]glucose in epididymal fat pads and adipocytes and the incorporation of [14C]glucose into lipids in adipocytes. Binding of GH was measured in cell aliquots using 125I-labelled human GH. In hypophysectomized control animals, GH binding was decreased to approximately 25% of the binding observed in adipocytes of normal rats. Insulin treatment increased GH binding by approximately 100% and the response to GH was markedly increased. Similar effects were achieved by thyroxine treatment. Basal levels of glucose oxidation were markedly decreased after hypophysectomy but were increased towards normal by insulin or thyroxine treatment. Neither cortisone nor GH treatment had any effect on GH binding or glucose metabolism. The results show that insulin and thyroxine may be important for the GH receptor and the insulin-like effect of GH in adipocytes. J. Endocr. (1985) 105, 331–337

Abstract:
Marantaceae is a family with approximately 550 species distributed throughout the tropics, with the exception of Australia (Andersson 2003). Calathea Meyer (1818: 6) used to be the largest genus in the family, previously including ca. 300 species. After the molecular study on the genus by Borchsenius et al. (2012), which confirmed the genus as polyphyletic, Goeppertia Nees (1831: 337) was resurrected to include all the species (approximately 245) that were not in the former subgenus Calathea Körnicke (1862: 112), the Calathea lanicaulis group (Kennedy et al. 1988) and the synonymized genus Sanblasia Andersson (1984: 21). Goeppertia thus became the most representative genus of Marantaceae, in Brazil represented by ca. 100 species (Braga 2013). It is found chiefly in rainforest habitats at elevations, below 1500m (Kennedy et al. 1988). However, the number of species may yet be underestimated due to unknown diversity of Brazilian species occurring in drier areas.

Abstract:
In this thesis I evaluate the departures of three common assumptions in macroeconomic modeling and estimation, namely the Rational Expectations (RE) hypothesis, the representative agent assumption and the use of first-order approximations in the estimation of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models. In the first chapter I determine how the use of survey data on inflation expectations in the estimation of a model alters the evaluation of the RE assumption in comparison to an alternative assumption, namely learning. In chapter two, I use heterogeneous agent models to determine the relationship between income volatility and the demand for durable goods. In the third chapter I evaluate if the use of first-order approximations in the estimation of a model could affect the evaluation of the determinants of the Great Moderation.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an empirical investigation into the Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT). At the onset of the thesis it is recognised that tests of the APT are conditional on a number of preconditions and assumptions. The first line of investigation examines the effect of the assumed nature of the form of the return generating process of stocks. It is found that stocks follow an approximate factor structure and tests of the APT are sensitive to the specified form of the return generating process. We provide an efficient estimation methodology for the case when stocks follow an approximate factor structure. The second issue we raise is that of the appropriate factors, the role of the market portfolio and the performance of the APT against the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). The conclusions that we draw are that the APT is robust to a number of specified alternatives and furthermore, the APT outperforms the CAPM in comparative tests. In addition, within the APT specification there is a role for the market portfolio. Through a comparison of the results in chapters 2 and 3 it is evident that the APT is not robust to the specification of unexpected components. We evaluate the validity of extant techniques in this respect and find that they are unlikely to be representative of agents actual unexpected components. Consequently we put forth an alternative methodology based upon estimating expectations from a learning scheme. This technique is valid in respect to our prior assumptions. Having addressed these preconditions and assumptions that arise in tests of the APT a thorough investigation into the empirical content of the APT is then undertaken. Concentrating on the issues that the return generating process must be unique and that the estimated risk premia should be stable overtime the results indicate that the APT does have empirical content. Finally, armed with the empirically valid APT we proceed to analyse the issue of seasonalities in stock returns. The results confirm previous findings that there are seasonal patterns in the UK stock market, however, unlike previous findings we show that these seasonal patterns are part of the risk return structure and can be explained by the yearly business cycle. Furthermore, the APT retains empirical content when these seasonal patterns are removed from the data. The overall finding of this thesis is that the APT does have empirical content and provides a good description of the return generating process of UK stocks.

This study is focused on the different ways the character of the Emperor Nero is depicted by the biographer Suetonlus and the historiographer Tacitus. The study is Introduced with an historical survey of the life of Nero. Thereupon a discussion follows on the life experiences of the authors, Suetonius and Tacitus, as well as the different style and genre used by each, and suggestions on how their writings could have been influenced by these factors. Two aspects of Nero's life are discussed at length, namely his relationship with his mother (and issues relating to that). as well as his interest in and practising of the arts (focusing on Nero as a poet, singer and charioteer). The discussion of these topics is done in the following manner: firstiy Suetonius' account of the events are given, followed by the account by Tacitus. These versions are then compared and where different, the candidate suggests possible reasons for the difference of opinion or presentation between the authors. Various characteristics of the Emperor Nero are referred to. The main conclusions can be categorised into three sections: - First and foremost the authors had different life experiences. Suetonius held various secretarial positions at the court of Caesar Hadrian which SUbsequently influenced his writings. He Was not however a senator or interested In politics and military affairs, which explains the fact that he does not write about political upheavals and does not contribute political motivations for certain actions of characters under discussion. Tacitus on the contrary, was a senator during the reign of Domitian. The atrocities committed by the Emperor and the slowly diminishing power of the Senate influenced the mind and writings of Tacitus to a great extent.

Abstract:
By combining literary criticism, philology, and contemporary psychoanalysis, this dissertation offers an innovative interpretation of Neronian court literature (Seneca, Lucan, and Petronius). I argue that the works of these three authors thematize and embody a problematic relation between the human subject and language. Language is not conceived or represented as an inert tool that can be easily appropriated by the speaking subject, but rather as a powerful entity that may, and often does, take control of the human subject, directing it from without. Besides analyzing how Seneca, Lucan, and Petronius portray the relation between the human subject and language in the internal plots and characters of their works, I also explore the relation between these three authors themselves and language. My conclusion is that this relation is defined by unresolved ambiguities and neurotic tensions, and I suggest that this might be a consequence of the traumatizing circumstances that the three examined authors endured at Nero’s court.

Abstract:
AbstractWe developed an imaging method utilizing the available RIs. We developed two types of real-time RI imaging systems (RRIS), one for macroscopic imaging and the other for microscopic imaging. The principle of visualization was the same, converting the radiation to light by a Cs(Tl)I scintillator deposited on a fiber optic plate (FOS). Many nuclides were employed, including 14C, 18F, 22Na, 28Mg, 32P 33P, 35S, 42K, 45Ca, 48V, 54Mn, 55Fe, 59Fe, 65Zn, 86Rb, 109Cd, and 137Cs.Since radiation can penetrate the soil as well as water, the difference between soil culture and water culture was visualized. 137Cs was hardly absorbed by rice roots growing in soil, whereas water culture showed high absorption, which could provide some reassurance after the Fukushima Nuclear Accident and could indicate an important role of soil in firmly adsorbing the radioactive cesium.28Mg and 42K, whose production methods were presented, were applied for RRIS to visualize the absorption image from the roots. In addition to 28Mg and 42K, many nuclides were applied to image absorption in the roots. Each element showed a specific absorption speed and accumulation pattern. The image analysis of the absorption of Mg is presented as an example. Through successive images of the element absorption, phloem flow in the aboveground part of the plant was analyzed. The element absorption was visualized not only in the roots but also in the leaves, a basic study of foliar fertilization. In the case of the microscopic imaging system, a fluorescence microscope was modified to acquire three images at the same time: a light image, fluorescent image, and radiation image. Although the resolution of the image was estimated to be approximately 50 μm, superposition showed the expression site of the transporter gene and the actual 32P-phosphate absorption site to be the same in Arabidopsis roots.

Abstract:
AbstractAgricultural lands make up approximately 37% of the global land surface, and agriculture is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Those GHGs are responsible for the majority of the anthropogenic global warming effect. Agricultural GHG emissions are associated with agricultural soil management (e.g. tillage), use of both synthetic and organic fertilisers, livestock management, burning of fossil fuel for agricultural operations, and burning of agricultural residues and land use change. When natural ecosystems such as grasslands are converted to agricultural production, 20–40% of the soil organic carbon (SOC) is lost over time, following cultivation. We thus need to develop management practices that can maintain or even increase SOCstorage in and reduce GHG emissions from agricultural ecosystems. We need to design systematic approaches and agricultural strategies that can ensure sustainable food production under predicted climate change scenarios, approaches that are being called climate‐smart agriculture (CSA). Climate‐smart agricultural management practices, including conservation tillage, use of cover crops and biochar application to agricultural fields, and strategic application of synthetic and organic fertilisers have been considered a way to reduce GHG emission from agriculture. Agricultural management practices can be improved to decreasing disturbance to the soil by decreasing the frequency and extent of cultivation as a way to minimise soil C loss and/or to increase soil C storage. Fertiliser nitrogen (N) use efficiency can be improved to reduce fertilizer N application and N loss. Management measures can also be taken to minimise agricultural biomass burning. This chapter reviews the current literature on CSA practices that are available to reduce GHG emissions and increase soil Csequestration and develops a guideline on best management practices to reduce GHG emissions, increase C sequestration, and enhance crop productivity in agricultural production systems.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses proteins, which make up approximately 50% of organic matter and contain about 85% of the organic nitrogen in marine organisms. Peptides and proteins comprise an important fraction of the particulate organic carbon (13–37%) and particulate organic nitrogen (30–81%), as well as dissolved organic nitrogen (5–20%) and dissolved organic carbon (3–4%) in oceanic and coastal waters. In sediments, proteins account for approximately 7 to 25% of organic carbon and an estimated 30 to 90% of total nitrogen. Amino acids are the basic building blocks of proteins. This class of compounds is essential to all organisms and represents one of the most important components in the organic nitrogen cycle. Amino acids represent one of the most labile pools of organic carbon and nitrogen.

Abstract:
Approximately 90% of companies are Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Their importance in the economy lies in the fact that they account for almost 60% of the jobs in the world, number which could be greater in developing countries. All these companies have an environmental impact that is almost imperceptible when observed individually, but if observed and analyzed as a whole, this impact is actually relevant. It is therefore important for these companies to include the concept of sustainability within their processes, which is difficult given the informal way they have managed their activities and processes. On the other hand, there are two paradigms that rule the concept of sustainability, weak sustainability and strong sustainability. As it will be presented in this chapter, both concepts are opposed and companies are normally oriented towards weak sustainability, because they are more interested in economic growth than in caring for the environment.

This chapter considers the relationship of Early Buddhism to Chinese thought during the Warring States period (ca. 450 BC–221 BC). Chinese thought was in a nearly constant state of flux, if not turmoil, during the Warring States period, which began shortly after the death of Confucius. Ideas related to the Early Buddhism attested in the fragments of Pyrrho and Megasthenes are clearly present in Warring States writings, especially Early Taoist texts, including the Laotzu, the Chuangtzu, as well as the anonymous Jade Yoga Inscription. Some of the Early Taoist material is approximately contemporaneous with Pyrrho and Megasthenes. It seems that this material's appearance in China is connected to the fact that Central Asia, including Bactria and Gandhāra, was part of the Achaemenid Persian Empire down to Alexander's invasion and conquest of the region in 330–325 BC.

Abstract:
This paper points out that the turbine performance computation method used widely at present in solving the performance of gas turbine engines is a numerically instable algorithm. So a new method, namely inverse algorithm, is proposed. This paper then further proposes a new mathematical model of solving the stable performance of gas turbine engines. It has the features of not only being suitable for inverse algorithm for turbine performance, but also having less dimensions than existing models. So it has the advantages of high accuracy, rapid convergence, good stability, less computations, and so forth. It has been fully proven that the accuracy of the new model is much greater than that of the common model for gas turbine engines. Additionally, the time consumed for solving the new model is approximately 1 / 4 ∼ 1 / 10 of that for the common model. Therefore, it is valuable in practice.

Abstract:
The success of any new build project is reliant upon all stakeholders — applicants, vendors, contractors and regulatory agencies — being ready to do their part. Over the past several years, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has been working to ensure that it has the appropriate regulatory framework and internal processes in place for the timely and efficient licensing of all types of reactor, regardless of size. This effort has resulted in several new regulatory documents and internal processes including pre-project vendor design reviews. The CNSC’s general nuclear safety objective requires that nuclear facilities be designed and operated in a manner that will protect the health, safety and security of persons and the environment from unreasonable risk, and to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. To achieve this objective, the regulatory approach strikes a balance between pure performance-based regulation and prescriptive-based regulation. By utilizing this approach, CNSC seeks to ensure a regulatory environment exists that encourages innovation within the nuclear industry without compromising the high standards necessary for safety. The CNSC is applying a technology neutral approach as part of its continuing work to update its regulatory framework and achieve clarity of its requirements. A reactor power threshold of approximately 200 MW(th) has been chosen to distinguish between large and small reactors. It is recognized that some Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) will be larger than 200 MW(th), so a graded approach to achieving safety is still possible even though Nuclear Power Plant design and safety requirements will apply. Design requirements for large reactors are established through two main regulatory documents. These are RD-337 Design for New Nuclear Power Plants, and RD-310 Safety Analysis for Nuclear Power Plants. For reactors below 200 MW(th), the CNSC allows additional flexibility in the use of a graded approach to achieving safety in two new regulatory documents: RD-367 Design of Small Reactors and RD-308 Deterministic Safety Analysis for Small Reactors. The CNSC offers a pre-licensing vendor design review as an optional service for reactor facility designs. This review process is intended to provide early identification and resolution of potential regulatory or technical issues in the design process, particularly those that could result in significant changes to the design or analysis. The process aims to increase regulatory certainty and ultimately contribute to public safety. This paper outlines the CNSC’s expectations for applicant and vendor readiness and discusses the process for pre-licensing reviews which allows vendors and applicants to understand their readiness for licensing.

Abstract:
Factorization models have been extensively used for recovering the missing entries of a matrix or tensor. However, directly computing all of the entries using the learned factorization models is prohibitive when the size of the matrix/tensor is large. On the other hand, in many applications, such as collaborative filtering, we are only interested in a few entries that are the largest among them. In this work, we propose a sampling-based approach for finding the top entries of a tensor which is decomposed by the CANDECOMP/PARAFAC model. We develop an algorithm to sample the entries with probabilities proportional to their values. We further extend it to make the sampling proportional to the $k$-th power of the values, amplifying the focus on the top ones. We provide theoretical analysis of the sampling algorithm and evaluate its performance on several real-world data sets. Experimental results indicate that the proposed approach is orders of magnitude faster than exhaustive computing. When applied to the special case of searching in a matrix, it also requires fewer samples than the other state-of-the-art method.

Abstract:
The Department of Energy handbook for airborne releases from nonreactor nuclear facilities bases its bounding airborne release fraction (ARF) for pressurized powders on tests conducted at Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). An analysis is presented that correlates the ARF from these tests. The amount of powder that becomes airborne is correlated in terms of an adjusted airborne release fraction (AARF) equal to the product of the powder entrainment from the powder bed and the ratio of the total vessel volume to the volume occupied by the powder bed. Powder entrainments and release fractions at low pressures are correlated using a fluidized bed analogy. The analysis shows that the entrainment is enhanced by a sonic shock if the pressure prior to the rupture exceeds approximately 33 psig. A secondary, three-dimensional shock is predicted to occur at an initial pressure of approximately 332 psig. A correlation based on this analysis is used to predict the ARF for ruptures of vessels containing plutonium oxide. It is assumed that the oxide is pressurized by hydrogen that is radiolytically generated from adsorbed moisture.

Abstract:
The effect of foreign particle ingestion on hot-section components has been investigated with a series of experiments performed using a one-quarter sector F100-PW-100 annular combustor. The combustor was operated so that the engine corrected conditions were duplicated. The experiments were designed to determine the influence of cooling hole size, hole roughness (laser-drilled vs. EDM), combustor exit temperature and dust concentration on the cooling capability of the component in the presence of dust particles. Cylindrical Lamilloy® specimens, film cooled Inconel cylinders, and F100-PW-220 first stage turbine vanes were investigated. The size distribution of the foreign particles injected into the air stream just upstream of the combustor was consistent with distributions measured at the exit of high compressors for large turbofan engines. The foreign material was a soil composition representative of materials found around the world. Pre- and post-test bench flow measurements suggested that none of the test specimen’s cooling passages or holes were clogged by the foreign particles. Foreign particle deposition on the specimens was experienced with approximate values for the minimum combustor exit temperature and minimum specimen wall temperature for deposition measured.

Abstract:
Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is a recently emerging research topic which aims to build classification models for unseen classes with knowledge from auxiliary seen classes. Though many ZSL works have shown promising results on small-scale datasets by utilizing a bilinear compatibility function, the ZSL performance on large-scale datasets with many classes (say, ImageNet) is still unsatisfactory. We argue that the bilinear compatibility function is a low-rank approximation of the true compatibility function such that it is not expressive enough especially when there are a large number of classes because of the rank limitation. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach, termed as High-rank Deep Embedding Networks (GREEN), for ZSL with many classes. In particular, we propose a feature-dependent mixture of softmaxes as the image-class compatibility function, which is a simple extension of the bilinear compatibility function, but yields much better results. It utilizes a mixture of non-linear transformations with feature-dependent latent variables to approximate the true function in a high-rank way, which makes GREEN more expressive. Experiments on several datasets including ImageNet demonstrate GREEN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:
This paper describes the first phase of an intended project to develop a reheat combustor-power turbine (RCPT) package which when added to an aircraft derivative gas generator would produce a commercially attractive reheat gas turbine for combined cycle and cogeneration applications. This first phase includes the identification of gas generators and establishes the relative merits of the RCPT package at various inlet temperatures based upon evaluated benefits. Our calculations show that in combined cycle application with the RCPT at an easily feasible power turbine inlet temperature of 1700°F, the steam flow increases by approximately 2.5 times, the combined cycle power by about 30%, and the combined cycle efficiency by about 5% compared to an unfired aeroderivative combined cycle. Compared to the duct fired combined cycle with the same power output, the efficiency increases by approximately 7.5%, leading to a lower cost of electricity of about 10 per cent for the economic assumptions of the study.
