This chapter focuses on children’s folklore as ephemeral art. Children’s schoolyard lore teaches African American children and their friends, rhyme, rhythm, a form of public speaking, formalized game rules, cultural expectations, kinesic aptitude, and self-assurance. Schoolyard folkloric play lasts a short time, from around four to twelve years of age, but its influence can be profound. By age twelve schoolyard verbal play gets pushed off into some quiet corner of the mind, but the effects linger, as children move on to adolescent and mature pursuits equipped with facility in language, poise, a knowledge of game rules, and an awareness of cultural expectations. This book began with integration in 1967 in New Orleans, a process stressful for all, but particularly for African American children. It ends revealing that African American children managed to cling to their own mode of speech and their own play for over forty years. Play and verbal interactions still have the function of enabling children to be schoolyard artists.

Abstract:
Psychometric testing is widely used outside medicine as part of an employee selection process, although its use has attracted a great deal of criticism too. In the NHS, psychometric tests are often used for selection of mangers and a growing number of Trusts are now using psychometric testing as part of the consultant interview process. This chapter looks at the implications of this and at some of the more commonly known tools. Psychometric tests include personality tests, e.g. Myers—Briggs and Insights, as well as aptitude tests designed to assess an individual’s general logical ability, and verbal, numerical and technical reasoning. Aptitude tests are thought to be more accurate in predicting job performance than personality tests but have not been widely used in medicine. The tools used within medicine tend to look at a person’s personality, how they behave within teams and how they respond to conflict. Some of the more commonly used tools are: • Myers—Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) • 16 Personality Factor (16PF®) • Insights Discovery® Personality Profile (Insights) • Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO-B®) • Thomas—Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) • Strength Deployment Inventory® (SDI®) Two of these tools, MBTI and SDI, explicitly state that they should not be used as part of a selection process. However, they are increasingly being used, driven by the advice of unqualified or unscrupulous behavioural consultants! . . . What should I do if asked to sit a test? . . . You are who you are. Do not panic and do not try to work out what the panel want when answering questions about your personality. In general you will only get it wrong! The outcome of your assessment will not be you and the person you appear to be may be less suited for the job than the real you. Equally, this is not something you can practise—you can’t really ‘get good’ at something that is designed to simply show the real you! It’s also worth remembering that if the panel members are determined to employ someone you are not, ask yourself whether you would be happy in the role.

Others aimed for different careers, such as becoming doctors, psychologists, teachers, sports lawyers, public relations specialists, and even ambassadors. Whatever their careers, their experience with music will probably help them. Chances are they’ll find ways to keep making music no matter what their day jobs. Read on for ways to keep the beat going. “Playing an instrument helps academically with other subjects,” claims Muh-Huey. This is something many of our teen advisors have noticed. She feels the time she put into mastering piano and violin has been time well spent. Don’t just take her word for it. Check out recent scores on the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), the test students take when applying to college. In 2001, students who had experience performing music tended to score higher than average on both the verbal and math sections of the SAT. So did those who took courses in other arts areas, such as drama, art, or dance. Maybe music helps students do better, or perhaps teens who study music tend to be disciplined and serious about learning, which rubs off in other subjects as well. Education researchers have also noticed connections between music and learning. For example, a study in California found that preschoolers who took music lessons improved in their spatial reasoning skills, which play a part in learning math. In another study, older students improved in spatial reasoning after listening to Mozart.

Esta es una disertación acerca de las metáforas entre la tecnología, la enseñanza, las artes y el diseño. El hombre, homo faber, en su aptitud para transformar la naturaleza, ha evolucionado gracias a su capacidad de aplicar la experiencia y el conocimiento sobre los sistemas vivientes a sistemas plásticos o diseñados. El único testimonio de muchas de estas transferencias cognoscitivas queda en los múltiples objetos legados a través de los siglos. El ejemplo más conocido que se haya registrado por escrito es el de Leonardo da Vinci, quien en sus notas expresó gran interés por los murciélagos como modelos para las máquinas voladoras, en especial por la forma en que su piel membranosa refuerza y recubre el esqueleto, que es esencial para las alas y el vuelo. Yo comenzaré, ante todo, por hacer ciertas experiencias, porque quiero sobre todo comenzar por la experiencia […] demostraré por qué los cuerpos están obligados a comportarse de tal o cual manera. Es el método que debemos observar en la investigación de los fenómenos naturales […] verdad que la Naturaleza comienza por el razonamiento y acaba por la experiencia, pero a nosotros nos es necesario proceder de otra manera y comenzar por la experiencia para descubrir la ley. (Da Vinci, 2004, p. 23) La sistematización del funcionamiento de los objetos tomado de los sistemas vivientes o de tecnologías que presenten las características de dichos sistemas está contemplado en la ciencia denominada Biónica. En las diversas ramas de esta disciplina, como la Genesa, identificamos infinidad de reproducciones gráficas de la naturaleza. Sin embargo, las más controvertidas y revolucionarias son las que ha suscitado la analogía con el hombre mismo y de ellas la que indudablemente ha devenido trascendental en las últimas décadas del presente siglo es la que ha dado lugar a la invención y desarrollo de las computadoras. El eje de tal controversia se centra en que la analogía de las computadoras se da en primera instancia con el cerebro humano, en segunda con el sistema nervioso y por último con nuestras principales capacidades sensoriales, a saber, la vista, el oído y el tacto y sus consecuentes extensiones en las artes visuales y la comunicación. Cuando a ellas se añaden las posibilidades motrices, se entra en el ámbito de la robótica y cuando se evocan percepciones y datos de tiempo y espacio, la referencia es hacia la realidad virtual.
