Abstract:
Meara (2005) developed the LLAMA tests as a free, language-neutral, user-friendly suite of aptitude tests incorporating four separate elements: vocabulary learning (LLAMA_B), phonetic (implicit) memory (LLAMA_D), sound-symbol correspondence (LLAMA_E) and grammatical inferencing (LLAMA_F) based on the standardised MLAT tests (Carroll & Sapon 1959). Recently, they have become increasingly popular in L2 acquisition research (Grañena & Long 2013b). However, Meara has expressed concern about the wide use of these tests without validity testing (cf. Grañena 2013a). To this end, we investigated several areas relating to the LLAMA tests, i.e. (1) the role of gender in LLAMA test performance; (2) language neutrality; (3) the role of age; (4) the role of formal education qualifications; (5) the effect of playing logic puzzles on LLAMA scores and (6) the effect of changing the test timings to scores. 229 participants from a range of language backgrounds, aged 10–75 with various education levels, typologically distinct L1s, and varying levels of multilingualism were tested. A subset of participants was also tested with varying timings for the tests. The results showed that the LLAMA tests are gender and language neutral. The younger learners (10–11s) performed significantly worse than the adults in the sound/symbol correspondence task (LLAMA_E). Formal education qualifications show a significant advantage in 3 of the LLAMA subcomponents (B, E, F) but not the implicit measure (LLAMA_D). Playing logic puzzles did not improve LLAMA test scores. The timings appear to be optimal apart from LLAMA_F, which could be shortened. We suggest that the LLAMA aptitude tests are not significantly affected by these factors although researchers using these tests should be aware of the possible impact of education level on some components of the tests.

Abstract:
Abstract. This study explores how reasoning facets relate to tests of scholastic aptitude and to academic performance. Intelligence test scores and academic aptitude test scores from freshman students in science (n = 284) and economics (n = 359) as well as subsequent grades from their first year in college were used to analyze structural equation models. The direct influence of reasoning facets on academic performance is fully mediated by academic aptitude test scores. Numeric abilities dominate the aptitude tests’ predictive power. Verbal reasoning explains a significant amount of aptitude test score variance in science but not in economics. The mediation analysis suggests that verbal, numeric, and figural reasoning are covered sufficiently by the aptitude tests.

Abstract:
The beginning of the aptitude concept, as well as aptitude testing, or, in other words, measuring one’s predispositions to foreign languages dates back to the 1920’s when the first aptitude tests, like the Iowa Foreign Language Aptitude Examination, or the Luria-Orleans Language Prognosis Test came into existence Carroll 1962. Since that time, aptitude tests have gone through a multitude of different transformations — from simple testing tools that resembled intelligence tests to an advanced computer-based version of the most influential Modern Language Aptitude Test developed by Carroll and Sapon in 1959 Dörnyei and Skehan 2003. Apart from them, researchers from different countries have attempted to create their own unique versions of the MLAT, like the Hungarian HUNLAT battery Safar and Kormos 2008, the Polish version named TUNJO Rysiewicz 2011, or even the CANAL-F battery based on an artificial language Kocic 2010. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to provide a thorough theoretical analysis and review of the available aptitude testing batteries and find the differences and similarities between them. What is more, the paper aims to describe the components of all the possible aptitude tests and discover the potential behind the testing tools that examine one’s natural predispositions effectively. Apart from the general knowledge about aptitude testing available anywhere nowadays, it is necessary to understand how the tests work, and what they expect from a participant taking part in such an initiative. As they are often compared with intelligence tests, the purpose of this paper is to show that aptitude tests constitute a different tool, and measure different abilities and skills than a set of intelligence related instruments. To reach this goal, I examine the tools available, describe their properties and potential success rate, analyze their components and compare them with the other batteries.

Abstract:
Whether the success depends on language aptitude or the language aptitude tests can predict the language learning achievement is one of the contradictive issues in SLA. Scholars have questioned the effect of aptitude on success, and they developed many language aptitude tests in time; because the success in aptitude measurement and the achievement prediction would mean to gain time in language learning. In addition, with the changing understanding of aptitude in recent years, language learning aptitude began to be compared to other individual differences (ID). These studies aim to increase the success of learners by designing instructions according to their aptitude and other ID. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the relationship between language aptitude, self-reported strategy use and language achievement of the Turkish EFL learners to see the decisiveness of language aptitude on strategy use and achievement. Results showed that the language aptitude influences foreign language learning achievement. Keywords: Language aptitude, language learning strategies, achievement, individual differences, EFL.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigates the validity of syntactic priming as a measure of implicit language aptitude. Syntactic priming refers to the tendency to reproduce a linguistic structure due to a previous exposure to the structure. The validity of the construct was verified by collating evidence for divergent validity—whether it is dissociable from explicit aptitude; convergent validity—whether it is correlated with other measures of implicit aptitude; and predictive validity—whether it is predictive of learning attainment. One hundred sixty-six university EFL learners completed three tests of implicit aptitude: syntactic priming, sequence learning, and LLAMA_D; three tests of explicit aptitude: LLAMA_B, _E, and _F; and three tests of L2 proficiency: untimed grammaticality judgment, metalinguistic knowledge, and elicited imitation. The results showed that syntactic priming was dissociable from explicit aptitude, but it failed to converge with the other measures of implicit aptitude, and it also failed to predict L2 proficiency. The results also showed that priming was negatively correlated with sequence learning and that sequence learning was a negative predictor of learners’ metalinguistic knowledge. On the other hand, the construct validity of explicit aptitude was strong. The results suggest the multidimensionality of implicit aptitude and the need for more research into the construct validity of syntactic priming as a cognitive ability for implicit learning.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study addresses the role of domain-general mechanisms in second-language learning and knowledge using an individual differences approach. We examine the predictive validity of implicit-statistical learning aptitude for implicit second-language knowledge. Participants (n = 131) completed a battery of four aptitude measures and nine grammar tests. Structural equation modeling revealed that only the alternating serial reaction time task (a measure of implicit-statistical learning aptitude) significantly predicted learners’ performance on timed, accuracy-based language tests, but not their performance on reaction-time measures. These results inform ongoing debates about the nature of implicit knowledge in SLA: they lend support to the validity of timed, accuracy-based language tests as measures of implicit knowledge. Auditory and visual statistical learning were correlated with medium strength, while the remaining implicit-statistical learning aptitude measures were not correlated, highlighting the multicomponential nature of implicit-statistical learning aptitude and the corresponding need for a multitest approach to assess its different facets.

Abstract:
Foreign language (FL) aptitude generally refers to a specific talent for learning a foreign or second language (L2). After experiencing a long period of marginalized interest, FL aptitude research in recent years has witnessed renewed enthusiasm across the disciplines of educational psychology, second language acquisition (SLA) and cognitive neuroscience. This paper sets out to offer a historical and an updated account of this recent progress in FL aptitude theory development and research. As its subtitle indicates, the paper centres on three major issues: following the introduction and clarification of basic concepts, Section 1 traces the early conceptions of FL aptitude dominated by John Carroll's pioneering work. Section 2 summarizes and examines more recent theoretical perspectives and FL aptitude models proposed by researchers from multiple disciplines that have significantly broadened the conventional research traditions associated with Carroll's original conception. Based on the research synthesis of current FL aptitude models, Section 3 suggests the directions FL aptitude theory and research might take in coming years. We conclude that a working memory perspective on FL aptitude presents one promising avenue for advance, as does the development of new aptitude tests to predict speed of automatization, implicit learning and greater control over an emerging language system. In addition, it is argued that issues of domain-specificity versus domain-generality for aptitude tests may lead to aptitude theory and research becoming more central in applied linguistics.

Abstract:
Recent second language acquisition (SLA) research into the cognitive abilities implicated in implicit, incidental, and explicit learning, and in learning and performance on tasks differing in their information processing demands has prompted new theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing L2 aptitude. This research is reviewed and related to measures of abilities operationalized in existing aptitude tests, as well as to measures of abilities that are the focus of more recent research in cognitive psychology. Finally, prospects for developing aptitude tests to serve the purposes of predicting both early and advanced level language learning success are discussed in the light of the SLA findings and aptitude frameworks reviewed.

Park, Hyunmi. "Flying aptitude tests for surgeons." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/47575/.

Full text
Abstract:
Aims: To test whether the Flying Aptitude Test, the Royal Air Force’s selection aptitude test, can be used for surgical skills testing by correlating it to both open and minimally invasive surgical simulated tests. The introduction of such test at the onset of post graduate training could offer guidance and encouragement on a career in surgery. Methods: The Flying Aptitude Test used for the selection of British Military Pilots was undertaken by 243 medical participants. The aptitude domains tested included: Psychomotor, Verbal, Attentional, Spatial aptitudes & Short-Term Memory. Results were correlated with performance of open Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) and Laparoscopic Simulator (Lap Sim) skills in simulated environments. Medical students (n=211) encompassed 86.6% of those recruited and the remainder were doctors in training. Correlation analyses were carried out on the undergraduate participants only to maintain a completely uniform group of novices from both surgical and military aptitude experience. Data on demographics, use of computer games, self-rating scores and feedback form were also analysed. Results: n= 243 (52.3% female). Mean age 24 years (range18-39). 230 participants undertook the computer based Flying Aptitude Test of which 199 were medical students with a mean score of 51.64% (16-96% SD=14.27). Total mean Lap Sim time was 737 seconds (259-2290sec SD=313). Twenty-six participated in the BSS with a mean score of 74% (16-97%, SD=23). There was statistically significant correlation between the Flying Aptitude Test and the Lap Sim data (undergraduates n=153 Pearson r=-0.275; p < 0.001) with the highest correlation in the Psychomotor domain (r=-0.300; p < 0.001). There was even greater correlation between the Flying Aptitude Test and BSS tests (undergraduates n=20 Spearman’s r=0.464, p=0.04) with the Spatial Reasoning aptitude having the highest correlation (r=0.540, p=0.014). Lap Sim & Flying Aptitude Test data correlation was greater in females but for the BSS data, the correlation was greater in male, but this difference between the genders was not statistically significant. Positive correlation was seen in the use of computer games and the Flying Aptitude Test, which was higher in males. There was a marked difference in the self-rating results between the genders, with female participants reporting an unfounded lower expectation of their own performance. Conclusions: This study shows a statistically significant correlation between the validated Flying Aptitude Test scores in both open and laparoscopic simulation tests. This study has shown an equally good performance from female medical students compared to their male peers in the Flying Aptitude Test as well as the Laparoscopic and Basic Surgical Skills Tests in this study. A surgical aptitude test such as the Flying Aptitude Test could be potentially incorporated into early post graduate training to inspire graduates into a career in surgery. Such aptitude test may encourage self-actualisation and empowerment of female trainees into believing in their own potential technical ability and challenge the gender gap in the speciality.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of the thesis is on a comparison of management job descriptions with accounts of knowledge and skill requirements in clerical work, using a set of eleven dimensions. Three jobs occupied by women are investigated. The organizations vary from a small, private-interest office to a large public bureaucracy. Case one is an administrative clerk from a trade association. The second case is a clerk-stenographer from a planning department of a municipality. The final case is an accounts payable clerk from a linen supply company. Data for analysis come from interview and observation records. The emphasis of the investigation is on the ingenuity with which these employees carry out their work. It was found that the clerks require more skills than are officially recognized. In all cases management underestimated the skills required, and the contribution the women make to the organization. Official job descriptions are a product of rationalistic practices, and yet it is argued that they are also expressions of patriarchal ideology.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the innovative use of interference tests in the assessment of reservoir connectivity and the field oil production rate during the development phase and prior to the first oil of the EGINA field, which is located in a water depth of 1600 m, deep offshore Niger Delta. The interference test campaign involved 26 pre-first oil wells (13 oil producers and 13 water injectors) to assess and subsequently mitigate reservoir connectivity uncertainties arising from the numerous faults and between the different channels within the complexes. The results proved valuable in confirming or otherwise reservoir connectivity, field oil production rate and the number of wells required at first oil to achieve the production plateau. The tests were designed using the analytical method (PIE software) and the reservoir simulation models enabling to establish the cumulative water injection required, the injection duration and the time a response is expected at the observers. These all had impacts on the planning, OIMR vessel requirements and selection of permanent downhole gauges for the wells. In addition, the tests were performed with the water injectors as pulsers and the oil producers as observers allowing to avoid and the associated environmental impact. Ten interference tests were realized compared to four planned in the FDP partly due to the use of the more cost effective OIMR vessel in addition to the rig.

Abstract:
Abstract Production-screening test (PST) is performed on a reservoir drill-in fluid (RDIF) prior to running any component of the lower completion assembly that is vulnerable to plugging. This is applicable in open-hole completions in which wire-wrapped production screens are deployed. The key objective of a PST is to reduce the risk of plugging key completion components, such as production screens, during subsequent flow back. Hence, a PST increases the chance of preserving well productivity (or injectivity), ultimate recovery and project economics. However, conducting and achieving PST-quality RDIF in offshore fields can be cumbersome, time-consuming, and expensive, yet the quality is not guaranteed. This paper presents the formulation, implementation, and results of a simple strategy to reduce the turnaround time and costs of achieving PST-quality RDIF for applications in offshore fields. Employing a combination of on-the-job assessment, empirical data and expert opinions, the strengths and weaknesses of onsite versus offsite (onshore) options of preparing PST-quality RDIF for offshore operations are evaluated. As a case-study, empirical data from the execution of both onsite and offsite options for an example field are employed for the evaluation. Results of simple cost-time-benefit analysis underscore the robustness and competitiveness of preparing the PST-quality RDIF offsite and transporting same for subsequent test validation and application on the rig. The results of these empirical examples show that the offsite option yields about 75% cost-saving relative to its onsite counterpart. In addition to cost saving, other incremental benefits of the former include (i) significant reduction in rig time and personnel; (ii) improved RDIF quality; and (iii) higher chances of preserving well performance and economics. To increase the success rate, residual risks of the preferred offsite option are outlined, and relevant mitigations provided.

Abstract:
Abstract The results of computer simulations and laboratory tests have been applied at Porth field in Nigeria to achieve a successful perforation through a blast joint to access hydrocarbon behind pipe. Accessing hydrocarbons behind pipe in multizone completions can be difficult. The options are; an expensive rig-based workover or a cost-effective, rigless, through-tubing perforation. For a rigless through-tubing option, the detonated perforation charges must pass through a blast joint, the casing and the cement and then into the target reservoir. The major concern is usually whether there will be enough penetration {Burky 2018} into the target reservoir interval, given the layers of material resistance that the charges will have to overcome, starting at the blast joint. The Blast joint has a higher wall thickness and a larger outer diameter than that of the conventional tubing string to mitigate against erosion from producing the target interval behind pipe. The goal in perforation operations is achieving the maximum production while reducing perforation damage. {Jackson 2016}. Computer simulations and laboratory tests for a well at Porth field in Nigeria were carried out to determine the potential for successful perforation through a blast joint to access hydrocarbon behind pipe. Coupon tests using different gun sizes and charges where simulated and tested to ascertain the most effective option to achieve the desired reservoir penetration. Both computer simulations and laboratory test results showed that a reasonable depth of penetration into the target reservoir interval was possible to achieve. The perforation job using a 1.56-in., six-shots-per-foot (6 spf), 60° phasing gun was successfully carried out and the well has been tested to a potential of 780bbl/d at a tubing head pressure of 943psi and choke size 20/64th. This success lays the foundation for going after other similar opportunities locked in behind-pipe previously thought inaccessible owing to the presence of a blast joint across the target interval. Associated rig costs for a workover of up to $10 million can be saved on each opportunity using this approach.

Abstract:
Abstract A hydrocarbon exploration begins with the geological recognition of probable hydrocarbon accumulation areas, which are confirmed by seismic survey and, to ensure certainty, it is necessary to drill a well. On those exploration wells measurements are made down the hole for the formation evaluation. The evaluation of water, oil and gas saturations are attained by geological and petrophysical characteristics. To obtain such information it is necessary to use a combination of several sources, namely mud logging, coring, well logging and occasionally down the hole tests. Due to the high risks associated with drilling activities, such as safety problems and environmental impacts, it is extremely important to have a very well designed and established drilling program. Therefore, the activities monitoring and control and a good knowledge of what types of formations will be affected, and its principal characteristics, are priorities to take into consideration. Bearing in mind the sources for the formation evaluation, the present work aims to focus on wireline logs and the major challenge that is faced here which is data acquisition and petrophysical evaluation. The case study is a Niger Delta basin (Nigeria).
