Abstract:
Export of aquarium-fish from the Maldives began in 1980 and in 1989 almost 54,000 marine fishes, worth approximately US$ 130,000, were exported. The collection of aquarium species is confined to a relatively small area around the capital island, Malé. Estimates of annual exports of 95 species were obtained by examining packing-lists held by Maldivian Customs. In parallel, the population densities of about 70 aquarium-fish species were estimated by visual assessment. Using a number of assumptions, potential (maximum sustainable) yields for 65 of these species — those for which export data were

Reports regarding introduced fish species traded in Medan have never been reported, even though the invasive impact of several species has occurred, especially in Lake Toba, North Sumatra. This research aims to collect data on the introduced fish species traded in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This research used a survey method by collecting data on introduced fish in 30 aquarium shops. The research was conducted from March to May 2024. The identified fish were then assessed for their frequency to determine their distribution percentage in aquarium shops in Medan. The results of the analysi

Aquatic ecosystems are currently facing a multitude of stressors from anthropogenic impacts, including climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Public aquariums positively contribute to ecosystems through conservation, education, and scientific advancement; but may also negatively detract from these systems through collection of animals from the wild and sourcing from commercial suppliers. Changes within the industry have occurred, although evidence-based assessments of 1) how aquariums collect and maintain their populations to determine sustainability of the environment they have harvested

The occurrence of the invasive apple snail Pomacea canaliculata in Indonesia was first reported in 1984. The species was introduced as an ornamental aquarium pet. Since then, people have begun to culture the snail in ponds usually adjacent to rice fields. When it was realized that the species multiplied rapidly and was a serious pest, this invasive apple snail had already spread widely. There are many cultural methods of controlling and preventing its distribution, but none are effective in keeping them at non-damaging levels. Awareness of ecosystem integrity increases the relevance of collecting information on the biodiversity of water bodies of various types. The episodic nature of studies of small water bodies, along with the high variability of their hydrological, hydrochemical, and morphometric parameters, is the reason for the lack of a full assessment of the state of biota. There is evidence to suggest that visitors to zoological collections prefer to see large, active mammals. To attract visitors, zoos and aquariums might be tempted to select for mammal species in their collection plans to maintain visitor interest. However, collections also play a role in endangered species breeding, many of which are not mammals. Using International Zoo Yearbook data, we explored the number of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates housed in collections across the globe. Abstract Over the past decade, the zebrafish has become an important model organism for biological research. In recent years, more than 1800 zebrafish mutants have been identified, providing a rich resource for the study of embryonic development in vertebrates. An increasing number of laboratories are now starting to use this unique collection of zebrafish mutants for their research. Raising and maintaining zebrafish is more demanding than keeping stocks of invertebrates, but less so than keeping stocks of mammals. This chapter is aimed at giving a background on how to raise mutant and laborat
