This study aimed to evaluate the aquarium practice of contributions to the occurrence of meaningful learning in school. Also seeks to assess initial knowledge and end the teachers and students about aquatic ecosystems, training teachers of basic education network for the development of an interdisciplinary approach through the use of an aquarium as a teaching strategy, check the capability of aquarium, as a teaching model for understanding the operation of a natural aquatic ecosystem and the organization of a pedagogical support guide for the study of an artificial aquatic ecosystem to contribute to the occurrence of meaningful learning in school. The research developed in this work is of applied nature; Qualitative on the approach; descriptive of the aims, and participating on the procedures. The analysis and data collection have been through initial diagnostic evaluations and final applied to teachers and students of the 9th year of the partner school, in 2014, through the actions in school to maintain the aquarium and the exhibition of works submitted for the community where the knowledge built were shared. The main results of this work indicated that the aquarium activity can be considered as an educational strategy for the occurrence of meaningful learning in school, because from the previous knowledge of students, new information were added to the cognitive structure of the same and thus new ideas and knowledge are built. It was found through diagnostic assessments that there was a better understanding of the importance of caring for aquatic ecosystems and the environment, fostering reflection on the responsibility of each front natural resources, preserving them for future generations. As the final product of this research was organized a “Guide to Educational Support for the Study of Aquatic Ecosystem Artificial", which will serve as subsidy for basic education teachers, guiding for the assembly and maintenance of an aquarium at school as well as for use this as a strategy for the occurrence of significant learning on the theme water.

Full textInitiated with the author’s own artistic work, the first purpose of this thesis is to point out the plastic and aesthetic properties of the aquarium, in its household and unique form as much as in the scale of the scenographies used by the public aquariums. The second objective is to determine its connections with the natural state of the subaquatic world, and its influence over our way of perceiving this unique environment. Directly inherited from the XIXth century, and essentially ignored by the academic world, this exhibition device is characterized by its ambiguity. It constantly fluctuates between science, decoration and entertainment, while taking an infinite variety of forms, each one involving the spectator in a different way. Using examples in the fields of art, art history, literature, and natural sciences, but constantly linked to the author’s artistic work, this thesis is organized in three parts. After a brief historical approach of the aquarium, it is first defined as a display, a screen generating pictures, based on the model of the painting and the theater stage, and it appears then, considering its components, to be a miniature garden. Far from an accurate reproduction of a natural site, the aquarium falls under the field of art and creation, perpetuating the Mannerism of the Cinquecento, the theory of the picturesque developed in the XVIIIth century, or Chinese and Japanese traditional gardens. Without any major change since its invention, the land- or aquascape inside the aquarium finally projects a nostalgic piece of scenery - the ruins, grottoes and other follies referring to both legendary apocalypses and the current ecological peril

Full textThe present work analyses the museographic transposition of the biodiversity concept in an exhibit of Aquario de Ubatuba, Ubatuba, SP. Biodiversity is a complex concept. Originally developed in ecology and the natural sciences, it was quickly integrated in a variety of fields and, often, with different and new meanings and interests. The importance of biodiversity for our society grows, and thus the need to better understand the educational processes that involve it. This research\"s objective is to understand the transformations that biodiversity goes through while being transposed from graduation textbooks to the marine ecosystems aquarium exhibit. The decision to use textbooks to represent reference knowledge is based on the notion that textbooks represent established theories and concepts of the academic community in question, the biology, ecology one. To allow comparison of knowledges in such different states as textbooks, exhibit texts and aquarium tanks, concept maps were used as an analysis tool. In order to study the academic knowledge, 3 graduation textbooks were used, selected by questioning major universities which were the most used ecology textbooks by their teachers. To study the aquarium, an interview with the Director and founder, as well as fully transcribing exhibit texts that belonged to the ecosystem exhibit. A method for describing the aquarium tanks, by using three depth levels, was developed and used in the tanks present in the marine ecosystems exhibit. The concept maps produced by these two units of analysis (books and exhibits) pointed to a much more species diversity focused biodiversity in the textbooks. This emphasis was not found in the exhibit that was preeminently focused around behavioral diversity. Man\"s role and relation with biodiversity while well present and explained in textbooks, connected with environmental threats but also with conservation, had little to show in the exhibit. Careful analysis of the maps allows differentiating the museographic characteristics of each exhibit object. While tanks were clearly adapted to communicating behavioral diversity, they were not good at showing genetic diversity, absent at the exhibit, but present in the academic knowledge as part of the definition of biodiversity. Determining knowledges present in the exhibit through the usage of concept maps is a useful tool in exhibit planning, as well as understanding the different roles that each object can play in communicating the concepts present in the exhibit. This research not only shows how each object in the studied exhibit is suited for teaching an aspect of biodiversity not really explained in depth by textbooks, the behavioral diversity, but also presents a method to produce concept maps of complex exhibit objects, contributing for future research.

Full textGnathia maxillaris is a haematophagous isopoda ectoparasite that feed on the blood and tissue fluids of marine fish. Several outbreaks of infestations have been described in wild animals and more recently aquaculture production systems or in tanks of aquaria. The control of these outbreaks or measures for eradication are very complex due to its biological cycle has been only partially described, to a limited knowledge about the ecology of this species and to the lack of solid information on specific preventive or therapeutic treatment. This study monitored the development of an infestation Gnathia maxillaris in a large volume aquarium. In order to assess the degree of infestation, a method for monitoring the development of the outbreaks was defined. It allowed to know the population dynamics of the parasite and to assess the efficiency of the applied actions to control the infestation in the system. The monitoring was based on practical daily sampling of the affected tank to quantify the number of larvi and to determine the proportions of the parasite at the different larval stages of its life cycle.. Additionally, it was evaluated the efficiency of the trichlorfon as treatment to control this type of crustacean infestation. The kinetics of decay of this compound after application in the water tank were also determined.. The availability of larvi from the affected tank allowed to define a methodology for maintenance in vivo at the laboratory and facilitate to follow the life cycle. The obtained observations are complementary new contributions to the first description of the life cycle by Mouchet (1928). Moreover, it provided practical and useful information to understand the dynamics of G.maxillaris in the infested tank. The scanning electronic microscopy studies of males obtained in this outbreak aided to supplement the morphological and biometric description of this species made by Monod (1926). The maintenance of larvi in the laboratory and the possibility of developing its life cycle at the laboratory in vivo allowed assessing the efficiency of some potential chemotherapeutic compounds that have been already applied in aquaculture against sea lice in cultured salmon (Salmo salar). The practical application of the results of this study was to eradicate G.maxillaris from the infested Mediterranean aquaria. Every performed study contribute with new knowledge on G.maxillaris biology and ecology, and provided practical information to control and eradicate this parasite from a large volume and complex biological system in terms of diversity and concentration of aquatic organism.

The Laboratory for Innovation and Sustainability of Marine Biological Resources, Ecomare, has multiple aquariums with several species under study. One of those aquariums is the scenario to this dissertation's development, which main goal is the disclosure, monitoring and control of that aquarium. The solution has two components, a web's platform and a mobile application. Both platforms allow access to the read values, related to the aquarium, collected by the available sensors. When values are not within a pre-de ned threshold, alarms are triggered in order to enable a quick response over the aquarium. The solution's aim is to allow the handlers a permanent monitoring over the aquarium, without the need of a physical presence in the facilities.

Full textThe Monterey Bay Aquarium was founded in 1984 and hosts nearly two million visitors each year. In addition to the paid staff, there are over 1,000 volunteers who are critical to Aquarium operations. One set of volunteers comprises the guides who rotate to different stations throughout the Aquarium during their shift to interpret the various exhibits. No formal analysis has been previously completed to optimize guide scheduling based on existing constraints. Currently, the guide schedule is manually generated; however, last minute no-shows or drop-ins often prevent an optimal schedule from being generated. This thesis established target staffing levels for each shift based on requirements developed by the guide program managers. Additionally, this thesis seeks to optimize the guides’ scheduled rotation during their shift. While the guide program managers have done an excellent job using heuristic methods to develop nearly optimal schedules, they have not been able to incorporate methods that minimize the time that is lost by guides transiting from station to station. This thesis analyzed and developed guide schedules that minimize the time spent transiting between stations. The guide schedule was modeled as a multicommodity flow network and solved with linear programing.

Full textThis research project examined the effects of a training program that focused on helping youth volunteers create a learner-centered interaction at an Aquarium. This study explored whether this learner centered training resulted in an increased ability to identify learner-centered engagement as well as reported changes in practice.
Most research on training programs and professional development, that introduces learner-centered strategies examines adult teachers working in formal environments. This study examined youth volunteer staff in an informal science institution that participated in a weekly one-hour training for four weeks during their eight week long summer volunteer program.
The data showed that some of topics introduced in the learner centered training, such as the importance of visitors' prior knowledge and the use of objects, were identified more often as good practice after the training. In addition, participants seemed to hold on to some of their original perceptions of good practices, such as providing positive reinforcement and modifying their physical posture to make the visitors feel comfortable. The investigation also revealed that conversation patterns changed in some participants' practice as a result of the training.

This thesis focuses on the design of an aquarium on the waterfront of Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong . The aquarium serves as a public 'event' which aims to educate and inform the visitor about regional environmental conditions and their effects on global ecological systems. The design incorporates the notion of 'information flows: addressing the relationship between the movement of the visitor through the architectural space and the movement of information sustained by the architecture. Acrylic technologies which function as the threshold between water and air, provide the opportunity to investigate the way in which information is layered and disseminated in this specific program. The aquarium aims at reconciliation between the harbor front development and the water's edge, becoming the physical filter between the aquatic ecosystem and the civic community. If we consider the aquarium building type as a 'living machine' (i.e., one that needs to sustain life), it can then be described as having a symbiotic relationship with the organisms it sustains . The aquarium can then be considered as a 'container' or sampling of the greater global aquatic ecosystem, encapsulated by a flowing membrane of circulation reciprocating with Hong Kong's urban fabric. The thesis proposes that architectural space can be redefined at the interface between nature, technology and the body.

Full textIchthyophonus hoferi has been diagnosed in multiple species at the Two Oceans Aquarium, this study focuses on Rhabdosargus globiceps (White stumpnose). I. hoferi is a mesomycetozoan parasite that multiplies in blood rich organs in the fish hosts causing a wide range of clinical signs resulting in organ dysfunction. I. hoferi can be diagnosed from microscopic examination of tissue squash preparations, culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and histopathology. In the literature only lethal methods of diagnosis are described. The development of a non-lethal diagnostic tool for disease monitoring is vital for collections where euthanasia of specimens is not possible.

Full textTiivistelmä Seksuaalivalinta on pohjimmiltaan seurausta yksilöiden välisestä, lisääntymiseen liittyvästä kilpailusta toisen sukupuolen sukusoluista.
