Due to the demands of booming Chinese cities and the increase in urban residents, the safety of aqueduct water transportation structures is noteworthy. A lot of old aqueducts were built in the 1990s and even earlier in the last century and may become vulnerable to potential earthquakes. This paper deals with an evaluation of an aqueduct’s seismic vulnerability accounting for leakage risk. Based on the Hua Shigou aqueduct in Ningxia, a probabilistic investigation was carried out to obtain the seismic fragility using Latin hypercube sampling. Abstract:
The probability density evolution method (PDEM) has been used to research the stochastic earthquake response and reliability analysis of large-scale aqueducts structures, with the changeable water level in tub and under the condition of the interaction between water and boundary of the tub. The results show that, the probability distribution of stochastic seismic responses about aqueduct structure is rules distribution, the response and failure probability of large-scale aqueduct structures under the stochastic earthquake are increased as the rising of water level, however, with the water level

Based on the shaking table model test of a bent-type aqueduct on the rigidity foundation, the dynamic characteristics and seismic performance of the aqueduct structure subjected to vertical seismic waves are discussed. The test indicates that (1) Water in the aqueduct makes the mass of the structure larger and the frequency of the model structure lower. The water in aqueduct makes fundamental frequency of the model reduce 32% and the modal damping increase 38.5% averagely. (2)The hydrodynamic pressure response at the bottom of the aqueduct is the highest. (3)The dynamic effect of El waves on t

Romans are considered as the greatest aqueduct builders of the ancient world, though qanat systems were in use in ancient Persia, India, Egypt, and other Middle Eastern countries thousand of years earlier. Based on history documents and civil engineering studies, this paper summarizes hydrology and hydraulics engineering techniques developed by Roman Engineers. The study case is the Nîmes Aqueduct and its Pont du Gard bridge, the most intact aqueduct bridge remaining today. Despite the existence of superb ruins and conducts' frames, little is known of the hydraulic engineering of these Roman a

A ten-year-old boy with bilateral moderate sensorineural hearing loss underwent computerized tomographic (CT) imaging (GE Brightspeed, Wisconsin, USA) of the temporal bone as part of the work-up to determine the etiology of his condition. The formal radiologic interpretation of the scan stated that the vestibular aqueducts were not enlarged. However, independent review of the axial CT images appeared to indicate the presence of enlarged vestibular aqueducts. (Figure 1) This can be contrasted with a scan from another patient with no evidence of sensorineural hearing loss. (Figure 2)

Object The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare CSF flow after endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and endoscopic aqueductoplasty (EAP) in patients presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus caused by aqueductal stenosis. Methods In patients harboring aqueductal stenosis who underwent EAP (n = 8), ETV (n = 8), and both ETV and EAP (n = 6), CSF flow through the restored aqueduct and through the ventriculostomy was investigated using cine cardiac-gated phase-contrast MRI. For qualitative evaluation of CSF flow, an in-plane phase-contrast sequence in the midsagittal plane was used. The
