Abstract:
This dissertation conceptualizes a Palestinian archipelago based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope, and uses the archipelago model to illustrate the situation and development of Palestinian consciousness in diaspora. To gain insight into the personal lives of Palestinians in diaspora, This project highlights several islands of Palestinian identities as represented in the novels: Dancing Arabs, A Compass for the Sunflower, and The Inheritance. The identities of the characters in these works are organized according to the archipelago model, which illustrates how the characters rediscover, repress, or change their identities in order to accommodate life in diaspora. Analysis reveals that a major goal of Palestinian existence in diaspora is the maintenance of an authentic Palestinian identity. Therefore, my description of the characters’ identities and locations in the archipelago model are informed by various scholars and theories of nationalism. Moreover, this dissertation illustrates how different Palestinian identities coalesce into a single national consciousness that has been created and sustained by a collective experience of suffering and thirst for sense of belonging and community among Palestinians. Foremost in the memories of all Palestinians is the memory of the land of Palestine and the dream of national restoration; these are the main uniting factors between Palestinians revealed in my analysis. Furthermore, this project presents an argument that developing a Palestinian exceptionalism as both a response and a solution to the problems Palestine faced in the 20th century has already occurred among diasporic Palestinians as well as those settled in the West Bank. In addition, a significant finding of this dissertation is the generation clash in regarding to the methods of modernization of the West Bank society between the settled Palestinian and those returning from diaspora. Nevertheless, a Palestinian homecoming will require a renegotiation of Palestinian identities in which generation gaps and other disagreements will be resolved and transcended in favor of nation-state building.

La thèse présente un corpus de sources gréco-latines relatif à l’Arabie et aux Arabes suivi d’un commentaire. Plus précisément, le corpus s’ouvre à l’époque archaïque avec quelques vers homériques et se termine au IVe siècle apr. J.-C. avec des extraits de l’Histoire romaine d’Ammien Marcellin. Les termes « Arabie » et « Arabe » de la tradition textuelle ancienne n’assument pas les mêmes acceptions qu’aujourd’hui. Au contraire, lorsque nous interrogeons le corpus sur ce qu’est l’Arabie en tant qu’espace géographique et sur l’identité des Arabes, nous aboutissons au constat que nous ne pouvons proposer une définition unique tant les auteurs anciens varient dans leur perception. La question de l’ethnicité est tout aussi complexe. Les sources anciennes désignent comme arabes des tribus qui ne se présentent pas elles-mêmes comme arabes dans leurs inscriptions : les Nabatéens sont désignés comme Arabes Nabatéens dans les textes tandis que cette auto-désignation est inconnue dans les inscriptions nabatéennes<br>The dissertation provides a corpus of Graeco-Latin literary sources concerning Arabia and Arabs followed by a commentary. More precisely, the corpus opens in the Archaic period with some Homeric verses and ends in the 4th century C.E. with excerpts from the Roman History of Ammianus Marcellinus. The words “Arabia” and “Arab” in the ancient textual tradition do not have the same meaning as they do today. On the contrary, after questioning the corpus on what is Arabia as space and on the identity of Arabs, we come to the conclusion that we cannot propose a unique definition because ancient authors vary in their perception. Likewise, the issue of ethnicity is equally complex. Abstract:
Notre étude consiste à retracer l'histoire du genre narratif arabe et plus précisément la nouvelle arabe de la fin du XIXème siècle jusqu'à 1969. Dans un premier temps, nous faisons un rappel historique et littéraire incluant la floraison du genre narratif en Egypte. Dans un second temps, nous analysons, à travers les préfaces de Mahmoud Taymour, l'évolution et les changements que le genre narratif arabe a subis dans la première moitié du XXème siècle. Enfin, la troisième partie illustre le gain en maturité du genre romanesque et plus précisément la nouvelle, à travers les oeuvres de Naguib Mahfouz, dans lesquelles nous trouvons un tableau complet de la société égyptienne et arabe de l'époque<br>Our study consists on tracking the history of the arab narrative type, more precisely the arab novel since end of nineteenth century till 1969. First, we start in the first chapter by a litterature and historical reminder of the birth of the narrative type in Egypt. Then, we analyze in the second chapter, through the Mahmoud Taymour introductions, the changes and evolutions that occur on this arab narrative type in the first half of the twentieth century. Finaly, the third chapter is the occasion to illustrate the gain in maturity of the narrative litterature and more specificaly the novel. This illustration is done through Naguib Mahfouz novels where we find a complete drawing of the egyptian and arab society at that time
