Abstract:
This study aims to describe the significance of the meaning of nationalism in the poem Mudhakkirät Andalusiyya by Nizar Qabbani and the factors that influence nationalism in the poem. In this study, the model used was library research. The material object in this research is a poem by Nizar Qabbani entitled Mudhakkirät Andalusiyya, written in Cordoba in 1955. This qualitative research is described descriptively using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory with a theory of significance order consisting of connotation and denotation. Sources of data in this study are in the form of words, phrases, and clauses derived from the poem Mudhakkirät Andalusiyya. Data collection techniques are reading techniques, translation techniques, and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique uses data reduction techniques with close reading methods, data presentation, and conclusions. This research indicates that the poem Mudhakkirät Andalusiyya provides a perspective on the historical awareness of the Arabs as a ruling Spain and an overview of the contribution of the Arab nation and the Arabic language to Spain. The factors that influence Nizar Qabbani in the poem Mudhakkirät Andalusiyya are political factors, the unity of the Arabs, and the identity and history of the Arabs.

Abstract:
The culture of the eighteenth century played a crucial role in proposing a positive image of Islam. The Valencian Jesuit Juan Andrés was particularly engaged in this re-evaluation of Arab culture in order to stress how much Iberian Arabs had contributed to the renaissance of Western culture and civilisation. In his treaty Dell’origine, progressi e stato attuale d’ogni letteratura (1782-1799) Andrés committed himself to outlining specific elements of the Medieval renaissance nurtured by Spanish Arabs between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. His interpretation on Al-Andalus concealed a «patriotic» intent, namely that of glorifying the historical role of Spain (rather than Italy or France) in the development of the European literary canon.

Abstract:
The concept of tolerance initially advanced by the Arabs in both the East and the Iberian peninsula, an ideal later continued at the time of the Reconquest by Spanish Christians, was the key to the transmission of Greek science to the West. This paper examines the far-reaching and peculiar ways in which both Christians and Muslims fostered on Spanish soil a thriving intellectual life in the low Middle Ages. Particular attention is given to the rich personality and precociously modern achievements of King Alfonso X, with his vast project of cultural empowerment on behalf of his subjects.

Abstract:
Abstract Yahya Kemal and Nizar Qabbani were two poets who served as diplomats in Spain in the past century on behalf of the governments of Turkey and Syria. Yahya Kemal wrote two poems about Spain, “Dance in Andalusia “ and “Coffee Shop in Madrid”. “Dance in Andalusia,” a poem written about the Flamenco dance, has become very famous. In this poem, he described the traditional dance of the Spanish people and emphasized the place of this dance in their lives and the fun-loving lives of the people of Spain. In almost all of the poems which Nizar Qabbani wrote about Spain, on the other hand, a feeling of sadness rather than joy prevails. He gives a deep sigh in his poems as he regards Andalusia as the one-time land of his ancestors. His most important poem with respect to Spain is the poem entitled “Granada”. This poem is considered to be one of the most significant odes in the Arab literature describing Granada, the pearl of Andalusia, Arab influences there, the Alhambra palace and the sadness felt due to the loss of the city by Arabs. This study analyzes the two most important poems written by Yahya Kemal and Nizar Qabbani concerning Spain, namely “Dance in Andalusia” and “Granada”. Whenever it is deemed appropriate, other poems of the two poets regarding Spain will be dwelt upon and what kind of an influence Andalusia left in their emotional world will be revealed.

It traces the question of “influences” back to 16th century Italy, casts the modern controversy about Dante and the Arabs in the broader context of borders, and questions the definition of European and Romance literatures in relation to Arabic literature. It then focuses on the 20th century debate about the Arabic roots of theCommediain Italy, Spain and the Arab world in order to account for the reception and translation of theCommediainto Arabic.

Abstract:
Textbooks are basic elements that shape the school curriculum. Despite the democratization and decentralization of the Spanish educational system, a certain ideological inertia and bias with respect to their contents and focus persists. The study presented here is based on an empirical analysis of the contents of 264 books used at the primary (6-11 years), secondary (12-14 years) and baccalaureate (15-16 years) levels. The results point to the existence of an "unstated" curriculum, where only brief mention of Islam, Arabs and Muslims, and their presence in Spain predominate. These are usually accompanied by images - for cognitive support - that serve to maintain an exotic, anti-modern, anti-Western and, in other words, an "Orientalist" image of this group.

Abstract By the Late Middle Ages, mounted troops - cavalry in the form of knights - are established as the dominant battlefield arm in North-Western Europe. This paper considers the development of cavalry after the Germanic Barbarian Successor Kingdoms such as the Visigoths in Spain or the Carolingian Franks emerged from Roman Late Antiquity and their encounters with Islam, as with the Moors in Iberia or the Saracens (Arabs and Turks) during the Crusades, since an important part of literature ascribes advances in European horse breeding and horsemanship to Arab influence. Special attention is paid to information about horse types or breeds, conformation, tactics - fighting with lance and bow - and training. Genetic studies and the archaeological record are incorporated to test the literary tradition.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the development of national literature in the process of historical evolution of society and its language, historical relations with other cultures which have some influence on the general literary activity in Medieval Iberian Romania. It was singled out the dominating role of epics as the main genre in the majority of occidental and oriental literatures, which confirms the importance of moral and political meaning of military honor which grew to the scale of the ideal of the epoch. It was stated the significant role of borrowed genres, plots, topics, motives from the polyphonic multinational literary repertoire in the formation of the national contents of poetical and prose works of the epoch of foundation of the national language and literature of Iberian Romania. The cultural phenomenon of the use of Galician Portuguese in poetry was highlighted. The tradition confirmed the lyrical function of Galician Portuguese in poetry and the King of Leon and Castile supported this tradition on the condition of the absence of general national language of Medieval Spain. The high prestige of Galician lyrics was transformed into the language itself which had special poetical internal feature. Bright and complicated phenomenon in Medieval culture of Spain is Arabian-Spanish (Andalusia) poetry of the VIIIXV centuries. It appeared as a result of transference of mighty oriental Arabian (Syrian) tradition onto the Iberian Peninsula. The bearers of the tradition wereMuslim Arabs who settled down in Spain after its conquest. The unique historical situation made Iberian Peninsula the arena of interaction of occidental and oriental civilizations. The external impulses made influence on literary life of Medieval Spain, constantly developing the people’s literary imagination, although not destroying but reinforcing the unique character of the national culture.

The main subject of the article covers the transmission of cultural values in travellers’ accounts, in particular it features the role of language as a communication tool. Illustrations come from Wincenty Lutosławski’s ‘Wędrówki Iberyjskie’ (1909, new edition 2021) and depict the extracts from literary and academic life in Spain and Portugal, as well as the matter of ethnical minorities (such as Arabs, Jews or Romani), whom he had met during his travel. The separate aspect of this article presents polish philosopher’s life companion – Sofía Casanova, whom he had met in Madrid and who had a huge impact on progress of Polish and Spanish relations. In the end, the article indicates similarities between Polish and Spanish nations, which form, in author’s opinion, additional motivation to get to know the country, which civilization achievements could become a part of a very important component of Polish youth’s education.

Abstract:
By treating the political presence of the Muslims as a simple historical parenthesis which lasted for eight centuries, the Romancero excludes Spanish Muslims not only from the peninsula but also from Hispanic identity itself and heralds the final expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. A different attitude was developed during the hundred years following 1492, as witnessed by the Hispano-Arabic and Aljamiada, but also sometimes the Castilian literature. The French Spanish-Moorish novel, a century later, redefines the character of the Spanish Muslim, which then becomes the basis for a fantasized Hispanic identity characterised by its contact with the Arab-Muslim world via the Mediterranean. The Moor of Granada becomes a literary model that provides Europe with a positive image of the Arab-Muslim world. Idealized, tolerant and generous, the Moro is no longer simply a Spaniard, but a pretext for reflecting on religious diversity and the link between a people and a place

Swenson, Benjamin J. "Rewriting the "Detestable" Rules of War: The "Guerrilla System" and Counterinsurgency in Napoleonic Spain and the Mexican-American War, 1808-1848." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/673475.

Abstract:
During the Peninsular War (1808-1814) the Spanish launched an unprecedented guerrilla insurgency that undermined Napoleon’s grip on that state. The advent of this novel and illegal “system” of warfare ushered in an era of military studies on the use of unconventional strategies in military campaigns – and changed the modern rules of war. A generation later during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Henry Halleck and Winfield Scott used the knowledge from the Peninsular War to implement an innovative “conciliatory” counterinsurgency program directed at the Mexican people – which set the U.S. doctrinal standard informing an international consensus on the proper conduct for occupation. The Spanish war against the French influenced both belligerents in Mexico: the Mexicans tried to mount a guerrilla war modeled along Spanish lines, and the Americans adapted their tactics, rules, and laws of war between 1808 to 1848 to avoid the disastrous imperial overreach exemplified by the French in Spain.<br>Durante la Guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814), los españoles lanzaron una insurgencia guerrillera sin precedentes que socavó el control de Napoleón sobre ese estado.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper to look for the reasons for the Andalusian military setbacks against the Iberian Christian Kingdoms, a problem which arose in the XI century and continued throughout most of the XII century. The method chosen to achieve this objective consisted of a quantitative study of 500 armed expeditions that occurred between 711 and 1172. The analysis compares the war potential, the military action and the Muslim armies over the different phases of Andalusian history. The results of the comparison show that in spite of al-Andalus’s greater territorial reach, and despite the introduction of new military objectives and changes in the composition of the Muslim forces, the Christian war potential progressively increased over this period. This fact indicates that the Andalusian military setbacks were mainly due to socio-economic reasons. This interpretation is confirmed by the existence of other texts and data, which note that the Muslim rulers of al-Andalus devoted a smaller percentage of the goods income available to them for military spending than the Christian leaders. This study concludes that the expenditures made as part of the effort to achieve istibdād –absolute power– forced the Muslim rulers to provide their army with a lower percentage of the available resources than the Christians. The emir or caliph was able to compensate for this reality with greater absolute numbers in terms of military investment. However, this advantage in absolute numbers was also wiped out when al-Andalus lost its political unity in the XI century and the Christian powers increased their territorial base.

Abstract:
This research looks at the use of historical analogies concerning the Mediterranean in the political speeches of top foreign-policy decision-makers in France, Spain and Italy since the Barcelona Declaration of 1995. In spite of the consistent and formulaic appearance of such references to the past, their meaning shifted as political interests changed. This evolution took place in the midst of an unsolvable contradiction. While political leaders have largely presented the Mediterranean as the birthplace of civilization, and as such, as a region capable of regenerating the world by example, at the same time, conflict between cultural blocs has been perceived as the defining feature of Mediterranean history. The very basis of discourse, then, made it difficult for leaders to provide a historical ground for the stated political goals of cultural inclusiveness and regional cohesion. Analysis reveals, on the contrary, that historical narrative contributed to a progressive withdrawal of political dialogue, which ultimately entailed the waning of the multilateral framework itself as the Arab Spring unfolded.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to compare the Spanish Civil War and the Syrian Civil War, through four levels of analysis, namely the internal, regional, ideological and international dimension. Thus, an essentially historical, descriptive and explanatory approach will be used, since it will be necessary to analyze the behavior of the Syrian and Spanish governments, their relationship with the opposition, the politics of international powers and international organizations that influenced the conflicts under study. The Syrian Civil War is one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the 21st century, just as the Spanish Civil War was a tragedy for the European community in the 20th century. The two civil wars have very similar dynamics, which ultimately illustrate why some civil wars end and others endure in time. The Spanish conflict and the Syrian conflict were part of broader conflicts, where local, regional and global interests overlap. What happened in Spain and Syria had repercussions on the international system and showed the limitations of the liberal order, when international organizations were paralyzed by their own members.

Abstract:
Digital technicals for the study of the Defensive Heritage: “Puerta de Almenara” and south walls of “Palacio del Gobernador” and “Plaza de Armas” of the Castle of Sagunto (Valencia)The use of digital documentation and registration techniques in Cultural Heritage is becoming more common every day, thanks to its ability to capture a large amount of data in a fast and efficient process. Its high geometric precision, thoroughness, performance retrieved and especially the generation of high fidelity and precision of architectural good assets make these tools optimal for the planimetric surveys. The work of intervention or conservation of cultural heritage requires a previous graphic registration using different techniques available. This article presents a combined method of implementation of various digital techniques that allow to achieve the most accurate graphic documentation possible. The different results obtained from the use of photogrammetry by drone or by manual camera are discussed. It is intended to seek the standardization and optimization of the process of documentation and value of the Cultural Heritage by combining these techniques. These techniques have been used in a real case: the three-dimensional modeling of various parts of the defensive set of the Castle of Sagunto (Valencia), called the “Puerta de Almenara”, which gives access to the square of the same name, on the eastern side and some walls of the fortification. The Castle of Sagunto is a mosaic of the different cultures who occupied it (Iberians, Romans, Goths, Arabs...). The fortification is located on top of a hill of the Sierra Calderona, controlling even the Mediterranean coastal road and the communication route with Aragon. During the last years, the castle has been immersed, for almost 20 years, in various works of consolidation and restoration to initiatives of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain.

Abstract:
Political polarization in Turkey has not only been visible during electoral processes but it has also been evident in non-electoral processes in online and offline protests. Gezi Park protests in 2013 denote to such processes. This study analyzes the use of Twitter during Gezi Park protests that had sparked mass protests and a big polarization. The role of Twitter had been influential in mobilizing the masses in the protests. During Gezi protests as seen in the Arab Spring, Twitter was used by the protesters in a dense way in the polarized political environment. Using the “mediated populism” as the theoretical framework, this study argues that social media has paved the way for the emergence of a citizen-centered public space in times of crisis and polarization during Gezi protests. The data that will be under analysis consist of the tweets posted on Twitter during the peak of Gezi protests. The date between May 25 and June 16, 2013 is taken as the time span that refers to the peak time of protests. By detecting top-mentioned tweets, this study aims to analyze how political activism had been expressed by the protesters. To achieve this aim, the randomly selected tweets posted in this time span were examined by conducting content analysis methodology.

Abstract:
New contributions on the chronology of the preserved remains of the medieval city walls of Almeria (Spain)The medieval city walls of Almeria have abundant references in Arabic sources and numerous preserved remains, either in all its elevation, or as small archaeological remains on the current slope and even under the ground. This circumstance has given rise to a lot of scientific literature on the chronology of each of the different existing precincts: Alcazaba, Medina, suburbs and outer enclosure. The problem lies in the fact that, since its foundation in the tenth century until the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489 and its reuse until the mid-nineteenth century, the medieval walls have undergone various repairs, extensions and reconstructions. In order to provide greater chronological precision, from the School of Arab Studies (CSIC), a Project of the State Research Plan was requested, which was granted with reference HAR2015-71609-P. It has allowed to make radiocarbon dating of wood and other building materials of the walls, in combination with studies of construction, metrological, historical techniques and restorations carried out since the mid-twentieth century. All this has allowed us to contribute new hypotheses about the chronology of the preserved remains, many of which are much more recent than the foundational walls that they have replaced.

Abstract:
A small personal use wind turbine (PWT) is studied and tested for power evaluation under different wind speed conditions. The wind turbine has small blades with FX 63137 airfoil. The blades are non-tapered and non-twisted to be economical and easy to manufacture. The blade span is 1.52 m which makes it small enough for personal domestic use yet big enough to produce sufficient power. The PWT size satisfies the requirements for rooftop small wind turbine for domestic power generation. The study is conducted in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the PWT is installed in an open area to test under the natural conditions. Readings are recorded for wind speeds, generator RPMs, current and voltage for different timings and conditions. The PWT is tested at a variety of wind speeds to establish the operating range of the wind turbine. Using the calculated electrical power and wind power values, corresponding electrical efficiency is determined. Results are evaluated for electrical power and electrical efficiency against wind speed. The result suggests better performance and efficiency for continuous wind speed conditions. It also shows the PWT can effectively generate power under the conditions found in UAE.

Abstract:
The Remote sensing and Interference detector with radiomeTry and vegetation Analysis (RITA) is one of the Remote Sensing payloads selected as winners of the 2nd GRSS Student Grand Challenge in 2019, to fly on board of the 3U AlainSat-1. This CubeSat is being developed by the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC), United Arab Emirates University. RITA has been designed as an academic mission, which brings together students from different backgrounds in a joint effort to apply very distinct sensors in an Earth Observation mission, fusing their results to obtain higher-accuracy measurements. The main payload used in RITA is a Total Power Radiometer such as the one on board the FSSCat mission. With these radiometric measurements, soil moisture and ice thickness will be obtained. To better characterize the extensive Radio-Frequency Interferences received by EO satellites in protected bands, several RFI Detection and Classification algorithms will be included to generate a worldwide map of RFI. As a novel addition to the 3Cat family of satellites and payloads, a hyper-spectral camera with 25 bands ranging from 600 to 975 nm will be used to obtain several indexes related to vegetation. By linking these measurements with the soil moisture obtained from the MWR, pixel downscaling can be attempted. Finally, a custom- developed LoRa transceiver will be included to provide a multi-level approach to in-situ sensors: On-demand executions of the other payloads will be able to be triggered from ground sensors if necessary, as well as simple reception of other measurements that will complement the ones obtained on the satellite. The antennas for both the MWR and the LoRa experiments have been developed in-house, and will span the entirety of one of the 3U sides of the satellite. In this work, the latest development advances will be presented, together with an updated system overview and information about the operations that will be conducted. Results obtained from the test campaign are also presented in the conference.
