Abstract:
AbstractBones from level G in the Arago cave (Tautavel, Southern France, 450 ky) were analysed using a combination of particle induced X-ray and gamma-ray emission (PIXE and PIGME) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Human occupation and guano production by bats introduced a large amount of phosphate into the cave and as a result a decarbonated pocket was formed in the sediment, characterized by the dissolution of clay minerals, calcite and bones, and by the precipitation of phosphate secondary minerals. The Al released by clay minerals was reprecipitated as crandallite in the few remaining bones, and as montgomeryite with traces of crandallite in the surrounding sediments. Bones within the pocket have very high levels of Al, Fe, F and Zn and often have ‘diffusive’ type U-shaped concentration profiles. These profiles show that post-mortem uptake of trace elements occurred, and thus that trace element composition has to be used with care in palaeonutritional studies but is indicative of local palaeoenvironment. This uptake is complicated by a large increase in hydroxylapatite crystallinity in Palaeolithic bones compared to modern or more recent ones, as a result of the large P influx which occurred in the Arago cave after the sediment deposition.

Abstract:
In archaeological studies, it is often important to be able assess sexual dimorphism and sex ratios in populations. Obtaining sex ratio is easy if each individual in the population can be accurately sexed through the use of one more objective variables. But this is often impossible, due to incompleteness of the osteological record. A modern statistical approach to handle this problem is Mixture Analysis using the method of maximum likelihood. It consists of determining how many groups are present in the sample, two in this case, in which proportions they occur, and to estimate the parameters accordingly. This paper shows the use of this method on vertebrate fossil populations in a prehistoric context with implications on prey acquisition by early humans. For instance, the analysis of mouflon bones from Arago cave (Tautavel, France) indicates that there are more females than males in the F layer. According to the ethology of the animal, this indicates that the hunting strategy could be the result of selective choice of the prey. Moreover, we may deduce the presence of Anteneandertalians on the site during spring and summer periods.

Abstract:
The Caune de l'Arago Cave (southern France) has yielded one of the best preserved and best documented sedimentary successions of the European Middle Pleistocene (Oxygen Isotopic Stages 14 to 12). Herbivorous ungulates (horse, reindeer, red deer, fallow deer, bison, musk ox, argali, and tahr) are well represented in the three major stratigraphic units CM1, CM2, and CM3. CM1 and CM3 correspond to cold and dry climate and CM2 represents temperate and humid environmental conditions. Dental microwear and mesowear analyses were performed for the ungulates from CM1–3 to test whether these methods of dental wear evaluation were suitable for detecting climate-driven changes in the dietary resources of the Arago ungulate community. We found that both dental mesowear and microwear indicate dietary traits and their relationship to climatic conditions as reflected by vegetation cover and community structure. In all units, even if some species seem to share habitats or resources, it appears that the overlap in their feeding ecology is very low. The CM1 and CM3 units, where pollen analysis indicates that the climate was cold and dry, show the lowest diversity in dietary traits. The CM2, where climate is known to be more temperate and humid, the spectrum of dietary traits is large—grazers, browsers, and mixed feeders are present.

Abstract:
AbstractFlights of tectonically uplifted, late Quaternary marine terraces are preserved at several localities along the Oregon coast. Intervening coastal areas without marine terraces reflect net subsidence. These gaps in the coastal terrace record make it difficult to correlate terraces along the Pacific coast. To test the utility of soils in relative dating and correlation, two flights of marine terraces near Cape Blanco and Cape Arago were investigated. The terraces could be distinguished in each area from soil morphological properties and a quantitative index of soil development derived from field descriptions. The soils in the two areas show a progression in development from spodosols to spodosols underlain by clayey material to ultisols. The lowest two terraces at Cape Blanco, which have reported age estimates of 80,000 and 105,000 yr, are correlative with the lowest two terraces at Cape Arago. The fifth and oldest terrace at Cape Blanco has no equivalent at Cape Arago. Soil development indices for the third and fourth terraces at each area allow two alternative sets of correlations.

Abstract:
Based on the review of micromammals associations (Soricomorphs, Erinaceomorphs, Chiropters and Rodents) from several sites in southern France (Arago Cave, Lazaret Cave, Moula-Guercy cave) and from the study of an original deposit in south-west of the Iberian Peninsula (Maltravieso cave), the main aim of this work is to reconstruct the evolution of palaeoenvironments and palaeoclimates in southern Europe, during Middle Pleistocene between 600 and 130 ka BP. In order to assess the reliability of palaeoecological reconstructions, taphonomic analysis have been performed on micromammals bones, and have allowed to highlight the involvement of opportunistic and specialized owls in the originof accumulations. Palaeoecological analysis, based on the use of different types of methods, showed that the alternating glacial cycles, characterized by cold or cool climates and open spaces, and interglacial, more temperate with closed environments, had an essential impact on the distribution of micromammals species in southern Europe, in relation to geography and topography of each site. “Non-analogue” communities are identified, combining temperate and cold zones taxa, reflecting the role of refugia area of these regions. They also show that dispersal events have affected palaeobiodiversity during the Middle Pleistocene, particularly in the areas of maximum expansion of species during the glacial phases

Abstract:
Though Jews were almost entirely physically absent from England between the end of the thirteenth and the end of the seventeenth centuries, they were nevertheless the source of considerable interest. They served as a focal point for the volatile English–Spanish relations of the period. Their writings were extensively consulted in the controversy surrounding the annulment of Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon. In addition, with the fitful advance of the English Reformation, Jewish sources become increasingly important to confessional disputes and competing efforts at Bible translations. Throughout the period, the figure of the converted Jew came to embody anxieties about religious transformation and the political and economic treachery that came along with spiritual infidelity, even as providentialist and millenarian enthusiasts looked forward to Jewish conversion as a sure sign of the end of time.

Abstract:
Rather than spend his life in the train of one particular king, Simon’s career saw him in the lordship of three different Crowns: France, England, and Aragon. Though his relations with the first of these were almost entirely amicable—if not always harmonious—he was more often in open conflict with the latter two. As a crusader, Simon was also subject to a fourth lord, the pope, for the major events of his career. But even while executing papal mandates, Simon at times came into conflict with the distant will of Rome. However, none of these lords successfully prevented Simon’s ascendancy. By exploiting the margins of monarchical authority, retreating from his obligations of fidelity to one lord in favour of another, he presented himself as a legitimate actor while interfering with the designs of a nominal superior.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on George Parnassus who, by the late 1950s, had become one of the most powerful figures in boxing. He came to be known as a specialist in developing Latino talent. In 1957 the Olympic Auditorium's matchmaker, Babe McCoy, lost his license (for fixing fights), and Parnassus, whose reputation by then had garnered him great local respect, was recruited as his replacement. Parnassus was looking for the next Latino sensation. He had managed Los Angeles native Art “The Golden Boy” Aragon in the 1950s, had set him up for a losing title fight against Carmen Basilio in 1958, and then watched him get handed down in the ranks. In Gaspar, Parnassus saw a big, popular score. He saw the first Mexican welterweight champion of the world. Working deals was Parnassus' forte, and he would need to work one with Kid Paret to make this happen.

Abstract:
A triage system aims to make a correct characterization of the condition of patients. Because conventional triage systems like Manchester Triage System (MTS) are not suitable for maternity care, a decision model for pre-triaging patients in emergency (URG) and consultation (ARGO) classes was built and incorporated into a Decision Support System (DSS) implemented in Centro Materno Infantil do Norte (CMIN). Complementarily, DSS produces several indicators to support clinical and management decisions. A recent data analysis revealed a bias in the classification of URG cases. Frequently, cases classified as URG correspond to ARGO. This misclassification has been studied by means of Data Mining (DM) techniques in order to improve the pre-triage model and to discover knowledge for developing a new triage system based on waiting times and on a 5-scale of classes. This chapter presents a kind of sensitivity analysis combining input variables in six scenarios and considering four different DM techniques. CRISP-DM methodology was used to conduct the project.

Abstract:
This chapter presents prophecy as a broader political discourse deployed outside the Morisco community for strategic purposes. In this sense, prophecy reveals itself as a language of negotiation and diplomacy. This chapter also centers on the career of a man by the name of Gil Perez, a Morisco double agent who acted as informant of the inquisitors of Zaragoza and spy for the Morisco communities of Aragon and Valencia. His story reveals a great deal about the socioreligious functions of prophecy among the Moriscos who identified as Muslims, and the ways in which prophecies were deployed as political discourses. The Gil Perez affair often has been discussed as a curious case of a Morisco rogue.

This chapter turns to the changing means of cultural reproduction: the constitution of books as physical objects through the medium of print. The print revolution, inaugurated by Johannes Gutenberg (d. 1468), was central to the cultural formation of modern Europe. Within decades of Gutenberg's death, the technology of the printing press had also arrived in Istanbul, carried by Jewish refugees from Spain. Arabic books were not, however, printed in the Middle East in significant numbers until the eighteenth century, and it was only in the nineteenth century that print came to dominate the production of Arabo-Islamic literature. After discussing early printing in the Arab world, this chapter focuses on the evolution of the publishing industry.

Abstract:
Aontia: an ancient toponym from the Aragon mapsThe Aragon geographical maps represent the territory of the ancient Kingdom of Naples. they date back to the second half of the fifteenth century, probably some of them or some copies were subsequently modified or updated. These ancient maps were rediscovered about thirty years ago in the State Archives of Naples and in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, and they have been under study for some years. They are unfortunately still little used in the scientific field, although several contributions have demonstrated their validity as an investigation tool thanks to their undoubted information potential. In fact, thanks to the very high degree of characterization of these maps it is possible to advance hypotheses and considerations of a historical-archaeological nature of the territories they represent. It is often toponymic analysis that offers insights and guides the early stages of research: toponyms relating to natural and anthropic elements inform about landscapes rich of medieval and classical references. The case study proposed here relates to the toponym Aontia, located on the Aragon maps near the centers of the Basilicata of Cirigliano and Gorgoglione. It is a place currently unidentified and not attested in any medieval or modern source; its toponym may refer to some references relating to an epithet of the well-known Greek divinity Artemis and to the presence of a sanctuary dedicated to it or to an ancient settlement. Starting from the analysis of the toponym Aontia, a localization proposal will be carried out based on the etymological and historical study, on the topographic survey and on the remote sensing analysis.

Abstract:
ARAO is the Slovenian public agency responsible for the disposal of radioactive waste. Presently its most important mission is the siting of a repository for low and intermediate level waste (LILW) in Slovenia. Although a location for a repository has no yet been selected, important preliminary activities are ongoing. One of the most important is the preparation of performance and safety assessment (PA/SA) for the planned LILW repository. The work is performed by the joint PA/SA team, which is managed and coordinated by ARAO. The work started already in 1997 with the clarification of the objectives of the PA/SA procedure. In 1999 the first preliminary performance assessment of two safety cases — surface and underground LILW repository on a generic site — was realized. In 2001 ARAO successfully applied for the IAEA technical co-operation (TC) program, which gave fresh impetus to the Slovenian PA/SA activities. Simultaneously with the on-going IAEA programme on PA/SA, our national case is also being developed. In 2002 the deterministic performance assessment for a LILW repository on a generic site was completed. The review of the PA/SA report performed by the IAEA expert mission in May 2003 was very positive about the results and the achieved level of expertise of the joint PA/SA team. It is hoped that the team will be ready to carry out a full performance and safety assessment of the site as soon as it is confirmed. In this paper the work and the results of the joint PA/SA team performed so far, and future plans with the emphasis on the IAEA technical co-operation are presented.
