Abstract:
Plaintiff, a United States citizen employed in Saudi Arabia, brought an employment discrimination suit against defendant, a U.S. corporation, alleging violations of title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. §2000e (1982)). The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed (per Davis, J.) the district court’s dismissal of the suit for lack of subject matter jurisdiction and held (two to one): (1) that neither the language nor the legislative history of title VII evinces a clearly expressed congressional intent to apply title VII outside U.S. borders; (2) that in the absence of clearly expressed congressional intent to the contrary, the presumption against extraterritoriality controls; and (3) that no “negative inference” extending the reach of title VII should be drawn from its “alien exemption” provision. Judge King’s dissent discussed international law principles not addressed by the majority. The Fifth Circuit subsequently granted on December 23, 1988, the petition for rehearing en banc submitted by plaintiff and various amici, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Abstract:
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia is home to the largest transnational oil corporation and gated suburban residential compound in the world. In exploring Saudi ARAMCO, I will undoubtedly be opening to the centerfold of all socio-cultural, religious, political, economic and pedagogical forces affecting today's geo-political affairs. The theoretical focus of my thesis comes from both a global and critical pedagogy framework that investigates the nature of asymmetrical power relations on micro, meso and macro levels. Additionally, the multiple perspectives I have gained while living in Dhahran and mediating between identities including girl, woman, South-Asian, Canadian, expatriate, student and artist have provided me with particular insights of a hermeneutical, epistemological, narrative, qualitative, phenomenological and visual nature. This has enabled me to perform rich multi-methodological research and informed written analysis. In this way, my thesis hopes to contribute to the examination of this largely un-explored phenomenon.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study investigates the feasibility of implementing the English for Industrial Security (EIS) model for wider employees’ English teaching purposes in Saudi Aramco, a world oil company based in Saudi Arabia. A sample of 160 subjects (learners, teachers and administrators) participated in this study. A triangulation technique including documentation, questionnaire and interview was implemented for data collection. A 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was applied to survey the subjects’ satisfaction with the EIS model’s characteristics while a semi-structured interview was conducted to explore the participants’ views and perceptions of the EIS model. Organizational documentation was examined to explore the relation between the learners’ English background, their job language needs and their EIS course performance and interconnect these variables with the EIS impact on learners. Questionnaire analysis indicated a high rate of participants’ agreement with most of the EIS model’s features. However, a considerable range of subjects’ unfavorable attitude, less agreement and criticism of most of the EIS model’s features were highlighted by the interviews. Nevertheless, EIS course graduates’ performance has been generally satisfactory on tests and in classrooms as highlighted by analysis despite the fact that most graduates disagreed with a number of the EIS features and practices. Findings ensured that the subjects’ dissatisfaction with the EIS model underlined that EIS was designed with organizational drives rather than with inclusive ESP pedagogical conceptions. Concerns regarding generalizing the EIS model in its current configuration to the organization’s employees were highlighted and evaluated within that perspective. Conclusions identified that although EIS was basically a skill-centered course intended as ESP, its delivery highlighted features that may not ultimately constitute an ESP model in accordance with reviewed ESP literature characteristics and best practices. Implementing the current EIS model might bear unintended pedagogical outcomes on learners, instructors and on the workplace, as well. EIS seems to have partially addressed some of the learners’ ESP needs, but its other features have brought it to camp close to previous and current General English teaching programs that have not been able to satisfy the Industrial Security personnel’s English language needs at Saudi Aramco. Recommendations propose comprehensive revision to the current EIS model for more practical usage to Industrial Security purposes and to larger organizational and regional population ESP applications and to future training strategies. This case study will remain available to those interested in ESP improvement locally and regionally in order to contribute to enlightening future ELT related research.

Shahin, Nafez Hamdan Salim. "Native-speakers tend to stress communicative fluency while non-native speakers tend to stress linguistic accuracy in error treatment : a classroom study conducted within the jurisdiction of the English language program in the Academic Division of Saudi Aramco Training Department." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/4727.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the context of communicative language Teaching, teachers have a tendency to stress communicative fluency rather than linguistic accuracy in error treatment. This study uses Aramco ESL teachers, students, and classes where teachers from different-educational backgrounds teach English to adult Saudi employees within its English language program, as an example to explore this tendency. The study hypothesis that native-speakers, given their different educational background tend to stress communicative fluency while the non-native speakers tend to stress linguistic accuracy. Hence, the study attempts to present an account of how these teachers look at errors and how they treat them in class, to reach some findings about this hypothesis. The study applies multiple methods in data collection including a teacher's questionnaire designed by the researcher, followed by classroom observations along with audio-recordings of those classes. The classroom observation scheme used is adapted from Spada and Frohlich's COLT observation Scheme-Part A- (Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching). The students' preferences to error treatment were also explored by using a students' questionnaire designed by the researcher, to add dimensions to the findings. To analyse elements in the research context, Likert Scale for coding responses to the questionnaires was used to provide numbers and percentages for analysis. Then, samples of classroom discourse collected from the audio-recorded observations were transcribed to analyse teachers behavior toward errors in class. To add further dimensions to the findings, the findings were discussed in view of Chaudron's illustration in his model: Features and Types of Corrective Reaction in the Model of Discourse. The findings were also discussed in view of Chaudron's Table: Rate of Error Production and Teacher Treatment, for the same reason. By using Chaudron's model and table in the discussion, the study aims to provide a sound interpretation of the strategies that Aramco teachers use to treat errors and whether these strategies reflect principles of Communicative Language Teaching. The study identifies several distinctive issues from the research context including opinions and beliefs of Aramco teachers and students about errors treatment. It also identifies types of strategies these teachers use in treating their students' errors in class, and provides conclusions that demonstrate that both NSs and NNSs have beliefs and strategies that promote both communicative fluency and linguistic accuracy although NNSs showed noticeable tendency for linguistic accuracy more than their native-speaking counterparts did.

Al, Ankari Abdulrahman. "Technology transfer : a case study analysis of the Saudi oil and petrochemical sectors." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/3465.

Full text
Abstract:
In the recent past a number of technologies have been imported into The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This experience has affirmed the conviction that technology can make an invaluable contribution to the growth of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. However, in doing so, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, like other nations, faces some questions of possible obstacles, trials and errors during the course of industrial development and technology transfer, that can be addressed by utilising science and technology efficiently to develop many sectors, improve output of industry, develop standards and -status of national manpower and its utilisation. This study analyses issues related to successful technology transfer in Saudi industry As such, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between industrial development and technology transfer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the important role that modem technology can play in development of the oil and petrochemicals sectors. The aims are to provide a better understanding of the linkage between technology transfer and industrial development strategies in general, with special emphasis on the performance of the Saudi oil and petrochemical industry in particular. As such, to avoid failures on technology transfer, it becomes an imperative to analyse technology transfer by considering various approaches, as follows: Technology and industry is a key to future growth in Saudi Arabia - The main objective here is to locate, attract and keep industry. The concept of technology and industry deals with role of technology and the dynamics of Saudi's industry environment to excel in markets. Strategy at the functional level - this relates to the various activities assigned to different departments in the organisational structure. The concept means that all functions must be conducted in accordance with industry, technology and strategy. Strategy and technology - this means how to transfer an already existing technology to Saudi industry. Strategy for research and development - The concept deals mainly with how to plan, finance and implement R&D for products, security, environmental protection etc. Where to draw the line between general and specific objectives in R&D. The chosen method to study these issues is case study analysis of SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation) and Saudi Aramco (Saudi Arabian Oil Company). SABIC has been established for two main strategic objectives that go together in two parallel lines. The first objective aims to develop human resources and to turn them into a trained category that has the capability to transfer, assimilate and develop the most sophisticated technologies. The second objective aims to develop the natural resources and convert them to industrial products, helping to diversify the domestic income sources and open iii the doors for building up processing industries to satisfy the local and external market requirements. The first case study (SABIC) provides an overview of the phenomenon of technology transfer to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For comparative purposes the second case study involves a case study of Saudi Arabia's largest oil firm (Saudi Aramco). These two case studies have been selected for their: i role in technology transfer in Saudi oil and petrochemical sectors, ii approach and access to greater resources in technology transfer, iii exposure of firm behaviour in the Saudi industrial sector, iv contribution to Saudi economic development and realisation of additional income through improved operations. The two case studies, typical of large companies not only in Saudi Arabia but also in the world, will address the obstacles in learning, committing and increasing performance through technology transfer. These cases highlight a range of choices available in technology transfer, which provide a wide range of means for technological learning through transfer. They offer different opportunities for further innovation and technology development. Although Saudi Aramco and SABIC claim 80 percent and 73 percent " Saudisation", respectively, the survey indicates that native Saudis need more participation and involvement in technology process in order to raise their technological know-how. As a result of this study, a common approach to technology transfer into Saudi Aramco and SABIC may be developed and applied by industry, per its requirements to address existing and prospective problems. At present Saudi Arabia has the capacity to absorb new technologies in its growing industrial sector. This is required to meet its desired objectives of becoming industrialised and self-sufficient in required technologies. The real test of effective technology transfer in this study is the need to build Saudi local technological capability supported by an effective learning strategy. The ultimate aim is to expand the scope of this study beyond the academic level towards the practical challenges of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of inward technology transfer for future Saudi industrial development.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Owned by the Saudi Arabian Government, Saudi Aramco is a fully-integrated, global petroleum enterprise and a world leader in exploration and producing, refining, distribution, shipping and marketing. The company manages the largest proven reserves of conventional crude and the fourth-largest gas reserves in the world. The company runs a vast network of pipelines transporting oil, gas and refined products to processing plants, refineries, export terminals and other customers all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco maintains its commitment to supply gas to the continuously growing local markets by implementing latest technologies and state of the art engineering solutions. Since 2009, and as a result of launching an Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) In-Line Inspection (ILI) Program, Saudi Aramco has discovered Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) defects in a number of its pipelines. Saudi Aramco built on ASME B31.8S criteria for identifying SCC susceptible segments to prioritize its network to manage the utilization of the EMAT technology. The criteria were based on pipeline operating parameters, environment, age and condition. An Extensive Field Verification program was put in action that illustrated the capabilities of the EMAT ILI tools. (Saudi Aramco’s ILI program included a few additional runs of Ultrasound Crack Detection Tool, UTCD, as well). This paper discusses in more detail how the Study Team enhanced the ASME B31.8S prioritization criteria and the major findings and highlights realized from this activity. A statistical evaluation of the data compiled in the 1st phase of the comprehensive study was conducted along with the literature review. The Study Team used logistic regressions[1,2] to identify factors that increase or decrease the likelihood that cracking is present. The trends that were identified relate to coating type, pipe grade, pipeline age, diameter, thickness, metal loss, cathodic protection (CP) level, slope, and pipe type. The Study Team used the findings to profile crack susceptibility in the pipelines found with SCC and for the Saudi Aramco pipeline network as a whole to identify pipelines susceptible to cracking to include in the future ILI runs.
