Abstract The interview with Amos Eiran offers a first-hand account of clandestine talks between then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and King Hussein, between 1974 and 1977. The re-introduction paradigm is that Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) herds adjust the size of their home ranges depending on the availability of vegetation, which is directly related to rainfall. The Arava Valley section of the Dead Sea Transform (DST) in southern Israel is characterized by the absence of seismic activity in recent times. Abstract:

Luminescence ages help provide a time scale for recurrent surface ruptures on a normal fault in the southern Arava, Israel. The dated samples come from alluvium and colluvium along a fault scarp north of Elat. The ages, obtained mainly by infrared stimulation of sand-size potassium feldspar grains, accord with geomorphic age estimates from soils and degraded scarps. Four large earthquakes occurred between 37,000 and 14,000 yr ago. Five smaller earthquakes occurred thereafter continuing until recent times. The extinction of a single species from a local community may carry little cost in terms of species diversity, yet its loss eliminates its biotic and abiotic interactions. We describe such a scenario in the Arava desert, where different cultural and law enforcement practices exclude Dorcas gazelles (Gazella dorcas (Linnaeus, 1758)) from the Jordanian side of the border while protecting their populations on the Israeli side.
