Abstract:

In the present paper, one chapter of the Jangar epic, chanted by the famous storyteller, khuurch Rinchin of Inner-Mongolian Baarin origin, is discussed from two main points of view: (1) the spread of Jangar among Mongols not belonging to Oirats and Kalmyks, and (2) how contemporary social circumstances transform the traditional heroic epic into another folkloric genre, i.e. the so-called khuuriin ülger. The chapter ‘Minggan, the Beauty of the World’ told by khuurch Rinchin—discussed here—is well known from other Jangar publications like the ‘Mingyan the Beauty of the World’ (published in the Thirteen Chapters Jangar/Jinggar: Takil ǰula qaγan-u üledel Tangsuγ bumba qaγan-u ači Üǰüng aldar qaγan-u köbegün üye-in önöčin Jingγar-un tuγuǰi arban γurban bölög). The life story of Rinchin and his creative innovation in traditional folklore genres are typical phenomena of the contemporary transitional period in preserving and sustaining folklore genres and performance.

Abstract:

The Geologists& Association has done a valuable service for British geology and for English-speaking geologists outside the British Isles by organizing field excursions and, for or from them, publishing guides. The first GA contribution was a report of a field meeting led by Gregory & Tyrrell (1924). In the 1960s there was a GA series of at least 41 guides covering most field areas in Britain and of these the one by S. I. Tomkeieff (1961) treated Arran. Tomkeieff's guide was brief and was not up to the standard expected of a work concerning this much frequented island. That work may be out of print and this guide appears to be a replacement. McKerrow & Atkins is good value and gives much to think about. Without hesitation, then, the reviewer's advice is that anyone going to Arran should buy it.

Abstract:

La première étape de cette thèse est consacrée à l'image scénique et l'image filmique (ce que voit spectateur sur la scène et sur l'écran). Elle fait apparaître six détails matériels : l'escalier, la liasse d'argent, la montre, la bougie, la lettre, le pilon. Leurs significations iconiques et axiologiques chez Dostoievski sont transformées à l'écran et sur la scène en un décor aidant l'acteur à jouer son rôle. L'analyse approfondie des mêmes scènes utilisées par les adaptateurs révèle des images pareilles dans des films relevant de différents mouvements cinématographiques et de différentes cultures de leurs réalisateurs. Adaptation souligne alors d'avantage l'acte de répétition et avec lui donne lieu a une deuxième partie qui porte sur les caractéristiques de l'écriture romanesque dostoievskienne telles que : la destruction de la logique du monde causal ; les espaces parallèles – des lieux d'événements d'importance égale ; la répétition des paroles et des gestes – la présence de la société dans le roman. La traduction de ces caractéristiques sur la scène et à l'écran se manifeste par les actions et les éléments physiques, imperceptible pendant la lecture, que sont : la course, la marche, la lumière et l'ombre, la montée et la descente. Ce même écart qui fait jaillir la personne de l'adaptateur constitue la troisième partie, qui, omettant la trahison du traducteur, s'est focalisé sur la rencontre entre les lecteurs (qui sont premièrement les adaptateurs) et leurs visions individuellement stéréotypées par leurs occupations, leurs convictions, leurs professions. Une telle approche nous a conduite à penser que l'adaptateur cherche chez le romancier une image pour son idée, longuement mûrie. Ou encore qu'il y cherche une idée pour l'habiller de la même manière par une image qu'il a déjà préparée depuis longtemps
The first stage of the dissertation work is devoted to the scenic and film image (seen by a spectator on the stage and on the screen). It reveals six material details: staircase, bundle of money, watch, candle, letter, icon. Their iconic and axiological meanings in Dostoyevsky’s novel are transformed on the screen and on the stage into a scenery helping an actor to render his role. The analysis of the same scene made by adaptators belonging to different movie movement reveals identical images. It appears that everything is repeated in these adaptations. The findings of analysis lead to a second party which focuses on characteristics of the Dostoevsky’s style writing such as: destruction of the direction of causality; parallel venues - places of events of equal importance; the repetition of words and gestures - the society’s presence in the novel. On the other hand, imperceptible actions and physical movements such as : race, walking, light and shadow, that are imperceptible while reading find their significance on the screen. This same gap that brings out the personality of the adaptor builds the third party, which, omitting the betrayal of the translator, focuses on the meeting between the reader and his vision, individually stereotyped by his occupation, his beliefs, his profession. Such an approach makes us believe that the adaptor seeks in novelist’s work a ready-made image to juxtapose it with his own, long matured one. Or he is looking for an idea to embody it in the same way by an image that he has already been prepared long ago

Abstract:

“The Art of Phrasing” is a chapter from Arban’s Complete Celebrated Method for the Cornet (published in 1864) that contains a selection of 150 melodies from Classical and early Romantic works. This section of Arban’s method was necessary for a new generation of cornet and trumpet players to learn melodic phrasing and style. A larger part of the trumpet solo repertoire was written for the clarino register or composed in fanfares due to the limitation of the valveless trumpet. The newly chromatic cornet grew to be a prominent solo instrument in symphonies and wind bands by the mid 19th century, and Arban's “Art of Phrasing” instructed players in musical style. Due to today’s vast number of musical genres, it is unlikely that present day students will be exposed to the melodies of “The Art of Phrasing.” With advancements in music streaming technology and with increased accessibility to countless recordings via the internet, trumpet players are able to access recordings of the melodies. However, there are errors and omissions in the chapter that prevents students from finding recordings with ease. This dissertation presents a new compilation of melodies organized by musical period from medieval to modern day, complete with proper title, composer name, chronological information, genre, and location within the selected work. In order to help students distinguish between musical styles, a brief description of characteristics from each musical period is provided, including information on the function of music in society, performance practice, and compositional trends in rhythm, melody, harmony, and expression.

Abstract:

Rares sont les musiciens de la famille des cuivres qui ignorent de nos jours le nom de Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889). Son attachement au cornet à pistons et au Conservatoire de Paris a cependant relégué dans l’ombre ses autres activités : composition, enseignement, direction d’orchestre et entrepreneuriat. Afin de les faire mieux connaître, nous avons pu réunir une importante documentation issue d’archives, publiques et privées, ainsi que de la presse de son temps. Ces documents nous ont permis de mettre en évidence l’ensemble des faits relatifs à sa vie et à son œuvre, concernant tout un pan de la vie parisienne, de la monarchie de Juillet à la IIIe République. Comptant quelque 700 entrées, le catalogue d’œuvres que nous avons établi illustre aussi la richesse de sa production musicale, principalement liée à la danse et au divertissement. En retraçant le parcours atypique de cette célèbre figure musicale du XIXe siècle, de sa jeunesse passée à Lyon dans une famille d’artificiers à la direction des bals de l’Opéra, l’auteur de cette thèse espère apporter une contribution efficace à l’histoire de la société française de cette époque
Few brass musicians today are not familiar with the name of Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889). However, his commitment to the cornet as well as to the Conservatoire may have overshadowed his other activities: composition, musical education, conducting and entrepreneurial actions. In order to make them known, we have managed to collect substantial information from private and public archives and extracts of contemporary press. Such documents have allowed us to bring to the fore all the events connected with his life in Paris from the July Monarchy to the Third Republic. With about 700 entries, this catalogue illustrates how rich his musical production was (mainly linked to dance and entertainment). Thanks to such a review of the atypical career of this famous figure of music in the 19th century, going from his youth in a family of firework makers in Lyon to conducting dance at the Opera House, the writer of this thesis expects to make a significant contribution to the history of French society in those days

Afin de limiter les impacts environnementaux, les industries du transport (automobile, aéronautique, etc.) cherchent à alléger leurs produits. Cette recherche de gain de masse peut conduire à l'utilisation des adhésifs dans la réalisation des structures assemblées. Dans les situations de crash, les joints de colle introduits peuvent jouer un rôle critique sur la tenue globale de l'assemblage. Par conséquent, la maîtrise de leur comportement mécanique devient un point clef de développement. Notamment en vue du « virtual testing », il est essentiel de disposer de lois de comportement fiables dans le but de fournir des outils de calcul prédictifs à l'ingénieur. Les travaux de thèse portent sur le développement d'une démarche expérimentale permettant de caractériser le comportement mécanique d'adhésifs sous sollicitations dynamiques combinées. Le développement d'une éprouvette Arcan et d'un dispositif de sollicitation dédiés à la caractérisation des adhésifs en dynamique constituent le coeur du travail de thèse. Après une phase de validation, le moyen d'essais développé a été utilisé afin de caractériser le comportement dynamique de trois adhésifs structuraux. Les résultats obtenus ont été comparés à des essais « structures » de type TAST. En parallèle de ces travaux expérimentaux, une ouverture sur la modélisation numérique des adhésifs est proposée. La stratégie de modélisation se base sur l'utilisation d'éléments cohésifs et d'une loi de comportement développée suivant la méthode de l'état local. L'identification des paramètres matériaux est réalisée par méthode directe et inverse à partir des résultats issus d'essais Arcan. La stratégie de modélisation développée a été transposée à des essais TAST et simple recouvrement. Les prédictions faites par les modèles sont proches des résultats expérimentaux validant ainsi l'approche numérique mise en oeuvre
In order to limit environmental impacts, the transport industries (automotive, aeronautics, etc.) are seeking to reduce the weight of their products. This search for mass gain can lead to the use of adhesives in the manufacturing of assembled structures. In crash situations, introduced bonded joints can play a critical role in the overall strength of the assembly. Consequently, their mechanical behaviour becomes a key development point. Especially for virtual testing, it is essential to have reliable behaviour laws in order to provide predictive computing tools to the engineer. The thesis work focuses on the development of an experimental approach to characterize the mechanical behaviour of adhesives under combined dynamic loadings. The development of an Arcan specimen and a test rig dedicated to the dynamic characterization of adhesives is the core of the thesis work. After a validation step, the developed test mean was used to characterize the dynamic behaviour of three structural adhesives. The results obtained were compared with "structural" TAST tests. In parallel of this experimental work, a first study on the numerical modelling of adhesives is proposed. The modelling strategy relies on the use of cohesive elements and a behaviour law developed according to the local state method. The identification of material parameters is carried out by direct and inverse methods from the results of Arcan tests. The modelling strategy developed has been transposed to TAST and single lap joint tests. The predictions made by the models are close to the experimental results and therefore validate the implemented numerical approach

Abstract:

The thesis focusses on the right angle where facades and sidewalks intersect, a thick folded hinge with a primarily collective use mostly occupied by retail, characterized by an invasive and transforming nature. The activities have as main stage the arrival of the architecture on streets - the ground-floors-, where boundaries between public, private and collective change their thickness, degree of transparency or perforation, become discontinuous, disappear at times, or grow and get separated from the ground level. It is in this level where the urban public component is mainly developed, because it is where the interaction between residents and visitors with the built environment helps to magnify the conditions of urbanity (1) of the city. Certain tracks on the urban landscape are the result of the collective action of retail: interventions that drill or sculpt the architecture, that superpose new structures or that overflow and extend themselves over the nearest piece of city. These actions are sauteed in time and produce overlapping scenarios that can be explained in detail to highlighting the importance of the contribution of these retail parasitacions -spontaneous and beyond the norms in many occasions- to the complexity and intensity of the public use of the sidewalks. The thesis approaches to urban retail from tour perspectives that established the theoretical basis for understanding the ground floor cityscape. The text is accompanied by a set of maps and images that explore both appropriate ways to understand and represent the threshold between the public space of streets and squares and the collective space of commerce. The first chapter reviews the scientific literature on which the research is supported, while unfolding the sensitive imagery around the topic. These texts and images accompany the formulation of the first hypothesis: what happens on the lower floors largely determines the character of the city. The second chapter describes types of buildings dedicated to commerce from the point of their morphology and their urban setting rules. It looks at how they have evolved and how they have been transformed into structures that have reversed the logic of the original model, or how hybridized to respond to the needs that commerce requested the city. The assumption on which it rests is the fact that retail and its implicit forms have an invasive and transformative character, and experiencing these changes inflicted in their environment they characterize the use of the urban grounscape. The third part focuses on three fragments in the center of Barcelona and explains them from the presence of some forms of retail described in the previous chapter: explaining their morphology or origin, reviewing municipal regulations that regulate them, mapping their use. Much to the way in which it manifests itself, retail always involves as mall-scale urban dimension, an oscillating roughness on the street level, a few ripples in the encounter of facades and sidewalks that are always in constant motion. The fourth chapter exposes the thesis establishing relations with the three previous with a thought on the contemporary commercial landscapes -those that characterize urban centers, those that are decentralized and tied to the transport infrastructure, those that remain without a physical support- and determines that to each of these scenarios correspond different rhythms and times, which are those of the retail forms that characterize their geography. La tesi es fixa en la ciutat a partir de l'angle a la trobada entre façanes i voreres, una frontissa gruixuda i plegada, d’ús fonamentalment col·lectiu i ocupada en gran mesura pel comerç, de naturalesa invasiva i transformadora. Les activitats tenen com a escenari principal l’arribada de l’arquitectura al carrer -les plantes baixes-, on els límits entre públic, privat i col·lectiu canvien de gruix, de grau de transparència o de perforació, es converteixen en discontinus, desapareixen a estones, o prenen cos i se separen del pla del terra, que és on es desenvolupa principalment el component públic urbà, perquè és on la interacció entre habitants i visitants amb el construït contribueix a magnificar les condicions d’urbanitat (1) de la ciutat. Determinades petjades al paisatge urbà són conseqüència de l'acció col·lectiva del comerç: intervencions que foraden o esculpeixen l’arquitectura, que s'hi superposen amb noves estructures o que en desborden els límits i s'estenen sobre el fragment de ciutat propera. Accions saltejades en el temps i escenaris superposats que explicats de manera detallada posen en valor aquestes parasitacions urbanes, emfatitzen la transcendència del comerç en la contribució -de manera espontània i més enllà de les normes, en moltes ocasions- a la complexitat i a la intensitat de l'ús públic de les voreres. La tesi s'aproxima al comerç urbà des de quatre perspectives que creuades estableixen les bases teòriques per una comprensió del paisatge de la ciutat arran de terra. El text s'acompanya d’un conjunt d'imatges i cartografies tant pròpies com apropiades que exploren les maneres d’entendre i de representar el llindar entre l'espai públic de carrers i places i l'espai col·lectiu del comerç. El primer capítol repassa la literatura científica sobre la qual es recolza la recerca, al mateix temps que desplega l'imaginari sensible entorn a la qüestió. L'estesa de textos i imatges que el configuren acompanyen la formulació de la primera hipòtesi: el que passa a les plantes baixes de la ciutat determina en gran mesura el seu caràcter. El segon descriu els edificis dedicats al comerç des del punt de la seva morfologia i les regles d'implantació urbana. Es fixa en com han evolucionat i s'han transformat en estructures que han capgirat les lògiques del model original, o en com s’han hibridat per poder respondre a les necessitats que el comerç demanava a la ciutat. La hipòtesi sobre la qual es recolza és la del fet que el comerç i les seves formes duen implícites al seu caràcter la invasió i la transformació, i que aquests canvis que experimenten i que infligeixen al seu entorn caracteritzen l'ús del pla del terra. El tercer se centra en tres fragments del centre de Barcelona i els explica des de la presència d'alguna de les formes de comerç descrites al capítol anterior: descrivint-ne la morfologia o l'origen, repassant la normativa municipal que les regula, cartografiant-ne l'ús. Per gran que sigui la forma amb què es manifesta, el comerç comporta sempre una dimensió urbana d'escala menuda, una rugositat oscil·lant a peu de carrer, unes ondulacions en la trobada entre façanes i voreres sempre en moviment constant. El quart capítol tanca la tesi establint relacions entre els tres anteriors amb una reflexió sobre els paisatges comercials contemporanis -els que caracteritzen els centres urbans, els que es descentralitzen i es lliguen a les infraestructures de transport, els que subsisteixen sense suport físic-, i determina que a cadascun d’aquests diferents escenaris li corresponen uns ritmes i uns temps, que són els que marquen les formes de comerç que en caracteritzen la seva geografia. Abstract:

Hindukush Indo-Aryan (HKIA) is a disputed subgroup of Indo-Aryan languages spoken within a linguistically diverse area stretching from northeastern Afghanistan, across northern Pakistan to northwestern India, principally covering the mountainous region of Hindukush–Karakoram–Western Himalaya. A noteworthy feature of some of these languages is a three-way demonstrative system, or three deictic terms used by speakers to direct one another’s attention to referents at different distances in their environment. It has been suggested that the distinguishing feature of one such demonstrative in HKIA is its referents’ remote distance from the interlocutors, or their absence from the environment altogether. The purpose of this study is two-fold: first, it is to more closely examine the demonstrative systems of a sample of HKIA languages on the basis of fieldwork data; secondly, it is to compare the data to previous accounts of the systems, as well as to the demonstrative systems of other languages spoken in the region. The results provide evidence that two demonstratives in HKIA are distance-contrastive, and one is invisibility-contrastive vis-à-vis the other two. Such a three-term system is moreover shown to be present in languages of the area that span across three other genealogical families, which suggests that the feature may be areally influenced.
Hindukush-indoariska (HKIA) är en omtvistad grupp av indoariska språk som talas i ett språkrikt område från nordöstra Afghanistan, genom norra Pakistan till nordvästra Indien, vilket främst täcker Hindukush-, Karakoram- och västra Himalaya-bergen. Ett anmärkningsvärt drag i ett antal sådana språk är demonstrativsystem med tre nivåer, eller tre deiktiska termer som talare använder för att rikta varandras uppmärksamhet åt referenter vid olika avstånd i deras omgivning. Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate the presence of a fourth-century controversy surrounding the second-century Christian martyr Ignatius of Antioch. Scholars are well acquainted with the Ignatian controversy of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. This thesis will show that many years before there existed another controversy over Ignatius of Antioch. During the fourth century, representatives of both Nicene and non-Nicene Christologies sought to conscript Ignatius in order to defend their understanding of orthodox Christianity. I will expose this nasty fight via the narrative found in the next five chapters. In the opening chapter, I will marshal textual evidence that leads to the conclusion that the Ignatian middle recension is riddled with textual alterations introduced by proponents of Nicene Christology. In chapters two and three, I will argue that the Ignatian long recension represents a response to these Nicene alterations by a Non- Nicene individual or party that possessed a Christology compatible with the Ekthesis Macrostichos creed of Antioch 344. I will demonstrate that both the Ignatian long reension and the Macrostichos understand Jesus to be equal with God as well as subordinate to God. Chapter four will catalogue the embrace of Ignatius of Antioch by a variety of fourth-century Christian leaders, with a focus on the Nicene Athanasius of Alexandria and the non-Nicene Eusebius of Caesarea. The concluding chapter will direct attention to John Chrysostom‟s sermon In sanctum Ignatium martyrem. The evidence leads me to conclude that by the end of the fourth century Ignatius of Antioch had become such a controversial figure that Chrysostom felt the need to defend Ignatius‟ character before he could put forth Ignaitus as a model for Antiochene Chrisitans to emulate. There has been much scholarly work devoted to Ignatius of Antioch and there has been much scholarly work devoted to the Arian controversy. Until now, this personality and this controversy have not been brought together for close inspection.
