Today a growing number of applications in design engineering, production and environmental testing, and system service require specific analog waveforms and digital patterns. Such requirements are neither satisfactorily nor easily met by the use of standard function or single purpose, custom generators. Traditional methods of waveform generation suffer from undesirable complexity or mediocre performance and are otherwise limited. Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the generation and applications of stable optical frequency combs. Optical frequency combs are defined as equally spaced optical frequencies with a fixed phase relation among themselves. The conventional source of optical frequency combs is the optical spectrum of the modelocked lasers. In this work, we investigated alternative methods for optical comb generation, such as dual sine wave phase modulation, which is more practical and cost effective compared to modelocked lasers stabilized to a reference. Incorporating these comblines, we have generated tunable RF tones usi

Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) is a source of non-equilibrium plasma that has seen widespread industrial application in recent years. A high-voltage arbitrary-waveform generator has been designed, built and characterised for the purpose of investigating the influence that the applied voltage waveform has on the operation of a DBD. The developed arbitrary-waveform generator is based on the principle of Fourier synthesis. Up to twenty Fourier components are generated by means of a digital circuit board, and then s

Abstract:
Digital predistortion is a signal processing technique used to remove undesired distortions caused by nonlinear system effects. This method is predominately used to linearize power amplifiers in communication systems in order to achieve efficient transmitter circuits. However, the technique can readily be applied to cancel undesired nonlinear behavior in other types of systems. This thesis investigates the effectiveness of digital predistortion in the context of a wideband arbitrary waveform generator.
