Abstract:
AbstractLouise Arbour presents a pleasant picture of international society in her article on ‘Responsibility to protect’ (R2P) as a ‘duty of care’ – one where states not only have a moral responsibility but also a legal responsibility to intervene in some of the worst situations on the planet. However, this argument is misleading and based on faulty legal assumptions which pose significant problems for Arbour's case. This response will argue that upon examination, Arbour's legal case is not very strong or persuasive. Even more importantly, even if we accepted Arbour's legal arguments, it would not make much of a difference to how states respond to international crises. Arbour seems to misunderstand that the problems facing R2P have always been those of ‘will’ and not law – and this must be understood as a political rather than legal problem.

Abstract:
Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml. Keywords: arbour-tristis; antioxidant activity; anthelminthic activity; Perithima posthuma; Piperazine citrate.

The main purpose of this essay is to study how a business and a city government can cooperate. The study uses the town of Arboga and the company Arboga Mechanism Engineering (Arboga Mekaniska verkstad) to study this on a local basis. The study takes place between 1910 and 1940. The study shows that their willingness to cooperate is based on their ability to gain some kind of advantage out of the cooperation. The study also shows that the changes that took place in the society at that time reflect on Arboga Mechanism Engineering and the city government cooperation.

Abstract:
The role of synapses as junctions of information transfer is well understood, however the exact role they play in the early development of neuronal arborisations is unclear. Studies in the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS) by Vaughn led him to posit the ‘synaptotropic hypothesis’ whereby the stabilisation of exploratory filopodia/branches is strongly correlated with nascent synapse formation. By pioneering a novel in vivo system, I have been able to show for the first time in Drosophila that the growth of complex arborisations occurs by synaptotropic-like mechanisms. Using live imaging during the pupal stages I see that the elaborate axonal arborisations of pleural motoneurons are built by dynamic interactions with their postsynaptic partners. Fluorescently labelled proteins show that this process involves the early assembly of synaptic components at sites of growth and branching. Using two independent binary expression systems to live image the pre- and postsynaptic elements I see a complementary pairing of hemi-synapses during growth. Arbor growth requires the trans-synaptic signalling of the synaptic cell adhesion molecules Nlg/Nrx which selectively stabilise exploratory axonal branches. Whole null mutants and local manipulations show that signalling through these molecules directs growth in a tropic manner. Published data on arbor growth in the Xenopus visual system forwards that Nlg/Nrx signalling is required for synapse formation, which in turn allows synaptic activity to stabilise branches. Using calcium imaging, in combination with pharmacological approaches, I have mapped the development of activity in my system. By silencing neurotransmission using TTX and single cell genetic mosaic approaches I find that the growth of these arborisations occurs without activity. Taken together these data point toward an important activity-independent role for proto-synapses during the development of arbor shape. These findings point to a mechanism of complex arbor construction from a simple iterated program of development, the principles of which may be evolutionarily conserved across taxa. Since arbor growth defects are associated with a number of neurodevelopmental disorders, such a model for this mode of growth in a genetically tractable system like the fly could have important implications for therapeutic research.

Abstract:
Municipalities in Sweden are responsible for physical planning by developing a general plan. This plan contains intended land and water use for the area. This study aims to investigate the level of integration of environmental issues in the general plan of Arboga municipality and also how well adapted the municipality is for climate change. Further on, the study intends to examine the focus of the general plan and at what rate the national environmental strategies are implemented in the local physical planning of Arboga municipality. Methods used for this study are interviews and reviewing of the general plan itself and other key documents. Politicians and officials from the municipal office in Arboga as well as officials from the county administration in both Örebro and Västerås were interviewed. This study reaches the conclusion that the most pressing climate threat for Arboga municipality is flooding of the Arboga River. Some measures have been taken to curb the consequences of any flooding; however it is uncertain whether they are adequate.  The study supports additional measures such as restoration of wetlands (tentatively upstream) for example. They would not only aid in keeping back water but also function as recreation and serve educational purposes. The general plan does not contain any actual focus on climate change, though the topical review of the plan (which probably will take place fall 2012) will make room for discussions on climate adaption. This work has just started up on a regional level and is intended to support the municipalities in their aim for climate adaption. The good will of Arboga municipality and its fine ambitions will certainly facilitate that work. National goals for the environment provide important guide lines for environmental work. The conclusion of this study is that the general plan of Arboga municipality would benefit from including these national objectives. This would help to establish an early and much important relationship between environmental matters and physical planning.

Abstract:

AKSAKALLI, VURAL. Heuristic Methods for Gang-Rip Saw Arbor Design and Scheduling. (Under the direction of Dr. Yahya Fathi). This research considers the problem of designing and scheduling arbors for gang-rip saw systems. Such systems are typically used within the furniture manufacturing industry for processing lumber, where lumber boards are first ripped lengthwise into strips of different widths, and then, cut to the required lengths to be used in manufacturing.A saw with multiple cutting channels is used to perform this operation. This saw has fixed blades at specific positions on a rotating shaft which rips incoming lumber boards into required finished widths. The pattern of cutting channels (i.e., the setting of the blades) along the saw shaft is referred to as an ''arbor''.A typical instance of the problem consists of (1) a set of required finished widths and their corresponding demands, (2) a frequency distribution of lumber boards in the uncut stock, (3) a shaft length, and (4) a blade width. The objective is to design a set of (one or more) arbors and the corresponding quantity of lumber to run through each arbor, such that the total amount of waste generated is minimized while the demand is satisfied. In the research, we focus on solving the problem using only one arbor. First, we discuss the computational complexity of the problem and propose a total enumeration procedure which can be used to solve relatively small instances. Then, we develop algorithms based on heuristic approaches such as local improvement procedures, simulated annealing, and genetic algorithms. Our computational experiments indicate that a local improvement procedure with two nested loops, performing local search with a different neighborhood structure within each loop, gives very high quality solutions to the problem within very short execution times.

Abstract:
As a genre, the huaben話本 short story reassured readers of a Heaven who punished and rewarded human actions with perfect accuracy. Yet in the years before the Ming明 (1368-1644) collapse, the genre grew increasingly dark. Aina Jushi wrote Doupeng xianhua豆棚閒話, or Idle Talk under the Bean Arbor (c. 1668), only a few years after the Manchus solidified their rule. The only full-frame story in pre-modern Chinese literature, the text is also notable for the directness with which it confronts societal and cosmological questions arising from the fall of the Ming dynasty. It was also the last significant huaben before the genre faded into obsolescence. My dissertation asks three questions. Why was this the last major collection of the genre? How do the form and the content work together? And what does Aina contribute to the Qing cosmological questioning through a genre obsessed with an ordered cosmos? I argue that the text deserves further study because of the beautiful complexity of its narrative structure and voices and its direct confrontation of the fall of the Ming. I also argue that Aina questions if there really is a moral Heaven that rewards and punishes human action and if there is any greater significance to virtuous action. His doubts about the presence of a moral Heaven increase as the text progresses but he is unwilling to completely discard Confucian relational ethics. This is shown by his loosening of the requirements of the huaben structure. The narratives become more incoherent and the content generally grows darker. By the final narrative, Aina drops the huaben form and presents an apathetic cosmos directly to the primary diegetic audience. The resulting cognitive dissonance causes the bean arbor to collapse and the audience to disperse. Aina offers us no moral certitude or clear didacticism.

Abstract:
Rip-sawing following the curvature of a crooked log means advantages for yield. However, the possibility to saw in a narrow curve with a circular saw blade is limited because of the inherently flat geometry of circular saw blades. For a double arbour circular saw the situation is even more problematic because the two blades have a certain overlap and thus, the two arbours are not positioned in the same horizontal position. In this study, a theoretical geometrical study of the creation of a kerf with a single circular saw blade and with a double arbour circular saw with two saw blades was examined. Results for stiff saw blades show that the kerfs become in general curved and inclined (tilted) in the vertical direction and also that the width of the kerfs for double arbour saws becomes wider at the top and bottom of the cant than in the middle. Additionally, the sawn boards obtain varying thickness along their width because of the varying kerf width. A comparison with experimental thickness data from four test sawings at a sawmill indicates that the theoretical results are valid and that curve sawn boards become thinner than straight sawn boards.

Abstract:
Abstract The rotating accuracy of a machine tool spindle directly affects the roundness of machined parts. Commonly, a precision arbor and one or two probes are used to inspect the spindle axis error motion. When a reference precision arbor is not available or when the spindle error motion is in the same order of magnitude as the accuracy of the reference arbor, it is imperative to separate the roundness error of the reference arbor from the spindle error. One of the most widely used method is the three-probe method. This paper presents an exact model and in-depth error analysis for the conventional three-probe method. The results show that contrary to conventional wisdom that a precise arbor is not needed with the three-probe method, the arbor accuracy should be at least ten times better than that of the axis motion. To reduce inaccuracy in the converted axis motion and arbor contour, it is also suggested that the mounting error of the probes should be less than one-fiftieth of the size of the axis motion and the arbor size. The exact geometric model developed in this paper can also be extended to analyze the precision aspect of other methods.
