Abstract:
Size variability within a cohort can have profound effects on community ecology and evolution. Although competition for resources generally increases size variability, the effect of (non-consumptive) predation on this demographic trait remains relatively poorly understood. Existing models suggest a positive correlation between growth rate (mediated by resource level) and expression of size variability (as measured by the coefficient of variation) in prey cohorts. We tested this prediction by exposing the tadpoles of the Japanese Forest Green Treefrog (Rhacophorus arboreus (Okada and Kawano, 19

Pests and diseases have been reported by Myanmar foresters and plantation owners as significant challenges to the quality and quantity of wood supply from natural and planted forests. As part of a FAO project on strengthening local capacity in forest health, questionnaire surveys on pests and diseases and a needs assessment were conducted among companies/organizations involved in growing forests. Thirteen and 12 participants responded to the two surveys, respectively. Respondents grew 10 different tree species, namely Tectona grandis, Acacia mangium, Acacia hybrid, Eucalyptus spp., Gmelina arb

SummaryFrom mid-September 1993 to February 1994 avian species were inventoried at eight sites selected to sample the major biogeographic areas and threatened habitats of Masoala Peninsula of north-eastern Madagascar. The sites ranged from 10 to 1100 m elevation. Three forest types were inventoried: six sites included primary lowland rainforest (0–700 m), one site was characterized as moist montane forest (above 700 m), and one site was classified as littoral forest. Bird species and distribution were sampled using point counts and line transects, tree observations and opportunistic sightings;

ABSTRACT Tree community is the structural and functional basis of forest ecosystems. Forest ecosystem on hills is influenced by elevation due to variation in temperature, aspect and topographic features. Can the understanding of tree species occurrence guided by altitude help in finding the distributional pattern in different elevational bands? Three Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile and reddish-pigmented bacterial strains, designated GW2-5T, WM1T and Tmos10T, were isolated from distinct environments in the Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the three strains belonged to the genus Fibrella. The type strain GW2-5ᵀ grew at temperatures of 10–35 °C (optimum: 25 °C), pH levels of 6.0–12.0 (optimum: pH 7.0) and NaCl concentrations of 0–0.5% (optimum: 0%). Adenomyoepithelioma (AME) is a rare variant of breast neoplasm. It is a biphasic tumour characterized by small epithelial-lined spaces with inner luminal cells and outer of abluminal (myoepithelial) cells. Either – or both – of these two cells may rarely undergo malignant transformation. We present a case of a 61-year-old lady who arbored a mass in her right breast. She presented with few left sided pulmonary nodules as well and was initially diagnosed with extensive DCIS on core biopsy. Lung biopsy of nodule was diagnosed as epithelial myoepithelial neoplasm. AbstractWe describe a new species of Ampelopsideae (Vitaceae), Nekemias mucronata sp. nov., from the Rupelian of Cervera (Spain) and revise another fossil species, Ampelopsis hibschii, originally described from Germany. Comparison with extant Ampelopsideae suggests that the North American species Nekemias arborea is most similar to Nekemias mucronata while the East Mediterranean Ampelopsis orientalis is the closest living relative of A. hibschii. Our review of fossil data indicates that, during the Eocene, four species of Ampelopsideae occurred in Eurasia, that is, N. mucronata in the Czech Re
